Standard bougie sizes in the United States range from 32-50F. The bougie size is not the same as stomach size, although it does influence the size of the sleeve. Generally, the smaller the bougie, the smaller the new stomach size, but the same size bougie does not always create the same size stomach. The finished sleeve size is determined by how close the stapler gets to the guide and whether the surgeon oversews the staple line and if so, by how much. While the gastric sleeve is now widely accepted as a primary bariatric procedure, there is not yet unanimous agreement on an ideal bougie size. The decision is trying to find the size that will provide the safest results with the most amount of weight loss. With a smaller bougie size, the smaller the sleeve and greater the restriction, but greater the risk of leak and stricture rate.

I would ❤to ever get that much in at a time, but you know ME, I'm the Case of Arrested Development over in Bypass-ville, and some Days I envy everyone else. August 14th I have my next Bariatric Clinic , haven't been seen there for 4 months, their Choice, not Mine and A Tantrum may be Thrown, Benign Neglect does not set well with Madame Frustr8 and. I am willing. to Tell Them So!

New here. Sleep apnea results negative.

Hi Fluffy S.F.It, just checking in again to tell you both Tomkitten and I will be having in- hospital testing on July 25th. I have lost now about 170 pounds from my HW, that's when I got my C-Pap originally. Now when I try to wear it I may fall asleep with it on, but seem to remove it while sleeping. So I am being re-evaluated to see 1. To see if it still is needed or 2, my OSA has relented enough after surgery that I no longer need it or 3. that it needs to be readjusted so it does fit again. When I got it in late Autumn 2017 I had big puffy chipmunk cheeks, now my face is angular, looking hollow in my cheeks, cheekbones very obvious. Do I look prettier now? Well that is up for discussion, but at the very least I sure don't look like the preconceived notion of what I once did. There are a lot of people telling me " If I hadn't recognized your voice, I would not have believed it could be YOU ! I now look like an older more weary version of what I looked like at High School 🎓 graduation. And yes, before I went through surgery and the ensuing weight loss, I never would have suspected I would or could appear like this. Now that I weigh at least 50 pounds less than Tomkitten , I no longer get hasseled by PCP, his new one is TK, told him " I would like you evaluated for Sleep Apnea, you do know it runs in your family! Your mom and her Dad were both diagnosed with OSA" Fine , said TK , but if I do I want you to consider recommending me for Bariatric Surgery to Mom's Surgeon Dr Needleman in Columbus. TK' s BMI is nearly 40 now, he already has GERD, another co- morbid would be putting him in contention even if he is Sub-40. So since I was scheduled on July 25th they scheduled him the same night, that way we both should get answers on this subject. Neither of our insurances will pay for home testing, so in- hospital it is! Please think positive thoughts for us both!!! 😝&😝 -
Anyone try bulletproof collagen protein
Frustr8 replied to Sosewsue61's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
OMG Thank you for the Info! I had just been looking over them at Wally World, think I'll save my time, save my 💰 money. Really hate crying POOR but I am on Social Security, Late Lamented had no retirement, plans, no retirement pension. It only stretches so far, lucky the gross amount of food has diminished since I have a hummingbird - sized pouch instead of the "Stuff it all In" original model, sure it still takes me a long time to eat but I am not any longer commited to eating All The Food in the Western World. Matter of Fact , nothing sounds exceptionally good, have to fight away the new compulsion. Now I have to force ME to take in enough food to keep my jalopy motor running. Do I need a Bariatric Psychological Mentor? Maybe, but I would have to commit to a 100 mile round trip. And I fail to see the feasibility unless They Were Awfully Awfully GOOD at what they do! -
I have had 2 different bariatric surgeons tell me that the pouch and indeed be stretched. This is one of the important reasons that you should stick to plan and be sure not to eat more than what your dr tells you to eat at each meal. I too am able to eat more than I should. I feared that my pouch was stretched. I had an egd recently and found out that mine is not stretched.

How supportive was your GP?
KatieMc replied to TattooedSeaStar's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Can you switch doctors?? If not, your mom's got it right, you do you! I'll preface my experience with: I got my gastric sleeve in Mexico, no insurance/approval hoops to jump through. My doctor was cautiously on board with me having bariatric surgery, but was wary about the Mexico part. He gave me all kinds of horror stories, personal "aftermath" ones that had shown up at his office after assorted procedures abroad. Then he thought about it...said at least Tijuana was super-close to the US, and all of the horror stories (abcesses, drain infections, etc) were from getting plastics overseas. He wished me luck, and today he took out my stitches. He was impressed with how neat, clean, and minimally invasive the work was and said he looked forward to seeing me for my post-op blood workup. -
This week (week 6) has been an eventful one in my little weight loss world.
I had my first "have you lost weight? You look good" comment from a friend in my book club on Tuesday. Of course she also asked "What have you been doing?" so I was honest and told her I had bariatric surgery - it still feels like a cop-out. "Well, I had bariatric surgery...so I've been eating fewer than 800 Calories a day and exercising more."
I also took my first Zumba class! It was lots of fun. I checked my watch after the first 15 minutes or so and I thought there was no way I was going to make it through the entire 50 minutes, but I did it and then proceeded to walk the 1.5 miles or so home. I think I might try Zumba again on Friday through another organization to see if I like that one better and then pick whether I want to do the Wed 5:30pm class or Fri 7:30pm class. Maybe I'll continue to do both? That would make my current "workout" schedule Zumba 1-2 nights a week, and a brisk 1.5mi walk 4-5 times a week.
I still have a looooong way to go, but I think I've started out right.

Told today No Bypass must be sleeve
Darktowerdream replied to Draven298's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
@Draven298 don’t feel bad about your reaction. I was utterly speechless when the first doctor I saw said the things he did. He started off saying something like people seeing a buffet of food and eating everything in sight. My brain shut down. I barely remember anything that he said. I tried to maintain composure but was having a meltdown. I barely made it out of the office and not without being an embarrassment. I tried to email the office about it and they told me I wasn’t a good fit for the doctor and turned me away. Maybe it was for the best, he would only do sleeve, and the insurance process was way too complicated with his office. Thankfully the endocrinologist recommendation that Cleveland clinic was an easier process turned out to be true. I’m on the Autism spectrum and doctors treat me differently and don’t take my physical conditions seriously. I’m not trying to scare you, just expect the possibility that the surgeon won’t listen. I didn’t even know if I’d have to give up on the idea of bariatric surgery. But I kept pushing my primary care and pushing to try to figure out why nothing I was doing was helping me lose weight and made sure my doctor had record of this for months. Write down what you need to say to the doctor and bring it with you. I hope that the doctor listens to you and your needs. But if you feel uncomfortable than Finding another doctor might be necessary. There are risks with any surgery. So that should not be what makes your choice. It’s not easy, dealing with difficult doctors, and I have for much of my life and it’s hard trying to fight for the right thing. especially when a doctor won’t listen to what you need. I just know for me personally I knew the sleeve would not be enough. I had to listen to my gut instinct. Which can be hard to do. I wish I had better advice. -
My surgery is July 30th. It has be rescheduled twice. My first date was September 17th. The office called and asked if I would like an August date instead so they scheduled me for August 22nd. Today they called and said they had a July date available and would like to bump me up again. I had a 12 month wait time because my insurance required me to do bariatric counseling for a year before they would approve the surgery. I can't believe my date is almost here!

I had my Gastric Bypass reversed 😞
Frustr8 replied to Alex Brecher's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
OMG Alex- STAY Strong- we need you and we need your baby "Bariatric Pal", I know it has made such a difference in my life, helped an geriatric aged lady (ME) to stay brave and search until I found my answer, many times I got apprehensive, 72 was not a premium age to seek RNY surgery, but I now know I can make it through to my finish. I would never made it down to Onderland without the support I got here. Less than 25 pounds to goal, and I NEVER BELIEVED IT COULD HAPPEN. Yeah I hoped, but feared I never would. Thank You. and YOU GET BETTER NOW, You Hear? -
Guys I had an English muffin with cream cheese. And god DAMN it was good but now I feel like I’ve messed everything up!!!!!!
catwoman7 replied to HopefulonLI's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I think part of the issue is that most people's exposure to WLS is "My 600 lb Life". I'm not knocking the show at all, but the people on there are NOT typical WLS patients. I've been talking to pre-op groups for the last three years, and I don't think I've ever seen anyone in there who was more than 400 or so pounds. Most look like they're probably 200-250. Most surgeons won't operate on someone who's the size of "My 600 lb Life" people - which is why they go to Dr. Now. Anyway, those people are starting out at super high BMI's, which is why they drop so much weight so fast. For us more "normal" patients, that amount of weight loss, although possible, is uncommon. I've been hanging out on bariatric boards for the last five years or so, and just based on what I've heard and read, I'd say most of us lose somewhere in the 15-25 lb range that first month. You'll find some who lose more or less, but I'd say a huge majority fit somewhere in that range. So you are totally fine!! -

Well, i, as well as many others are as a rule on here, so anytime you feel like talking, here we are. No matter how prepared you feel you are, Bariatrics still hold surprises and You Do Learn As You Go. But when I feel bewildered there are always veterans who have helped me get through whatever was bothering ME! And I do believe you'll end up just fine!😝👍 -
Wow this thread is a real gem! I’ve laughed for the last 10 minutes. 🤣🤣🤣 I really don’t have much drama, unless you want to call throwing all of your loving family members out of the hospital room about 5 minutes after I got there post-op drama. You see, the surgery schedule got delayed 4 hours due to computer issues and an emergency surgery and then the bariatric floor was full and I didn’t get to my room til 6pm (my surgery had been originally scheduled for 10am that day). I was so freaking pissed when I discovered that they had held all 3 of us in the recovery room, keeping us drugged up for several extra hours and still expected us to have our 64 ounces Water drank by morning rounds at 7am. When I realized what the time on the clock in my room said, I kicked EVERYONE out and was so angry I actually got dressed by myself and started walking and drinking water ASAP Lol, I vaguely remember telling hubs and mom that “they would only be a distraction” and that because of the hospital disorganization I was behind schedule and needed to catch up! I set the timer on my phone to go off every 45 minutes and I would drink, pee, walk, walk, walk some more, drink, and lie back down. Didn’t sleep a wink the entire night and at one time one of the nurses aides had to follow me around (not difficult as I was moving slow.... but moving) to get me in one place so they could check my blood sugar. Every time my nurse came in to measure my intake and output, I would ask if I was ahead of or behind the other 2 surgery people from that day and would crack him up when I fist-pumped upon learning I was progressing the fastest. Oh and because I’m a pharmacist I had down pat the timing of all nausea meds. I was making the poor man rotate through meds every 2 hours so I could walk walk walk and drink drink drink. I managed to get released by 11am, and yes....... I was first out !

I had my Gastric Bypass reversed 😞
Alex Brecher replied to Alex Brecher's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
There's a risk associated with all bariatric surgery. What happened to me happens to under 1% of gastric bypass patients. It was just bad luck. -

Oh wow! Is this a risk for people who have bariatric surgery, or is this something you would have got anyway? I hope you recover swiftly! -
OH my dear the HEADACHES!!!! Yes, this was me. I think she me it took a week for them to go away. Sending you prayers for daily renewed strength. You have so got this! Each day for me got easier.

Im European based as well and even though my surgery has been covered by the public health care system, the information hasnt been quite as detailed as that from the States. But like many have already pointed out..this forum is great for support and filling in the blanks when we all have questions (or just want to rant about our bariatric life).

How many calories do you eat a day?
Krestel replied to april042019's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I happened to find this study (2018) that was looking at exactly this question (but was comparing RNY and lapband 3 months out from surgery): https://www.oatext.com/pattern-of-calorie-and-macronutrient-intake-after-bariatric-surgery-in-patient-with-obesity-a-clinical-trial.php "After one month, patients educated to have 800-1000 low fat, protein-rich regular diet and allowed to increase their intake to 1000-1200 kilocalorie per day 3 months after surgery." They also mentioned that patients from other studies were not reaching the recommended protein intake. A really academic read but if you are into that kind of stuff, it's interesting. -
I'm a medical professional and totally agree with you...my postop patients do fantastic with Toradol and I've given it for years with great results. But....I couldn't get my bariatric surgeon to agree to let me have it...so disappointed! I tried to convince him that since it was given IV it wouldn't affect my stomach, but he still wouldn't do it. Luckily I had very little postop pain. Unfortunately ibuprofen is the only med that helps me with pain...Tylenol does nothing. I used to get many headaches but since surgery I've only had a couple that didn't need meds.

Yes, this is something to pass by your surgical team. The BPD/DS and VSG are a lot more tolerant of NSAIDs than the RNY (which started the whole NSAID thing in the bariatric world) but they are still something to be careful with, and surgeons' experiences and opinions vary widely. Our program allowed them as soon as when narcotic pain relievers were no longer appropriate; others wait longer into the healing phase and others may not permit them at all. In any case, if you are permitted to use them they are something to use under medical supervision (even if they are OTC) and have your surgeon in the loop.

So I called thank goodness! I couldn't get ahold of anyone at first so I decided to call the dietitian. She said yes I am suppose to start it today. She asked if I had my packets from her classes and I told her yes. She said it outlines what I can have and just to go off that list. So today is officially day one of my liquid diet. I had protein drink this morning and a lot of water inbetween. Now I'm enjoying a cream of chicken broth from Bariatric Pal. I'm impressed with how flavorful it is. I have the variety pack so we'll see if the rest are as tasty. I'm not really hungry either... I normally don't eat the first few meals of the day. So i expect my hunger to hit me later tonight. 😔 Sent from my SM-G965U using BariatricPal mobile app

I think maintenance is going to be tricky for me since I tend to lose slower. I have been a consistent 134.8-135.2 for 12 days even though I’m still eating 700-800 calories and exercising in loss mode. I’ll probably drop a pound in a few days, but I never really know. I’ve never measured myself, I just gauge how clothes fit. I’m very close to my final goal of 132 and have no clear plan what to do when I get there other than gradual trial and error. My 1 year follow up is in August, so hopefully I can talk to the dietician. The bariatric RD just had a baby so I will be seeing the imposter lol

Started on The Carnivore Diet
ms.sss replied to GradyCat's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
@GradyCat My cousin (not a bariatric patient) has been on the carnivore diet for 3 months. He lost 40 lbs with not a stick of extra exercise. He says he feels great and noticed his energy levels have been way up since starting. He also swears by bone broth as a big part of his diet...I sampled some of his stash and it was DELICIOUS, lol. I know you've been stalling for a while, hope with works out for you -
I crochet, sew, walk my dog, and have been cooking different recipes that I find on various bariatric blogs to find new things to try. I am allergic to fish and seafood so I hope to find other alternatives that are high in protein. I never knew there were so many ways to cook chicken lol :-)
