  2. Hello, question to anyone who has had recent surgery. I am 11 days post op and have not had my post op appointment due to the craziness of the Covid-19 virus it was postponed. Since surgery I have had intermittent itching to my stomach, not the laparoscopic incisions, but to my stomach. When I scratch i have little welts that come and go. Has anyone else experienced this?
  3. @ansirak I have been worried about my breathing as well. I try to get up and move when I can. I find myself fearing coughing from my dry throat. My husband keeps the little container by my side of the bed full with poweraid zero, water and a protein shake. I dont have much of an appetite. I try to get in liquids as I can I may je up to 8 or 10 ounces day. I'm just not hungry. They had pizza and pasta today, the pasta smell was intoxicating. I licked a little of the sauce off his fork...after that some broth did the trick and I was okay. Does broth work for you? I have found ham broth and chicken bouillon to be amazing!!!!

    Ok. COVID-19 should be a serious concern for everyone. And anxiety disorders are real so please stop telling her to distract herself. Practicing social distancing isn’t in our nature as Americans and some find it very difficult to alter routines. Do the best you can. It’s all any of us can do. Just because you’re homebound right now doesn’t mean you can’t go for a walk outside. Just keep a fair distance from others. 6 feet isn’t enough. A sneeze Or strong cough can send aerosolized particles up to 30 feet. Practice good hand hygiene. Eat small meals. Stay hydrated. And if you have a therapist offering text or FaceTime appointments DO IT. Let’s all be here for each other. — your friendly Microbiologist, Epidemiologist

I dont know about other places but where I am the hospital/clinic is closing many entrances so they can screen everyone coming into the hospital for any reason and send them to the ER if they are febrile or sick. This will translate to everyone standing in line for likely hours and possible getting exposed to COVID-19 even though the county I live in only has 3 confirmed cases. It might be a blessing in disguise to have your surgery postponed because the last thing you want is to be sick while trying to recover from surgery. I called and cancelled my colonoscopy scheduled for next Monday because I do not want to go anywhere near the hospital. Can be done in a few months...
  6. I requested late April as a surgery date and was just given a confirmed date this morning of 4/20/2020. However even with a confirmed date over 4 weeks from now I was still told that date may change pending any negative info on COVID-19 for my immediate area, keeping fingers crossed...

    I was given my surgery date this morning, Thursday, April 23rd 2020 @ 9:00am There is a slight chance that all non-essential surgical procedures may by postponed and reschedule later this year due possible larger outbreak estimates for Covid-19, I am hoping I get this over with as scheduled.

    I don’t know what to say exactly. Whatever your fears regarding Covid-19 it shouldn’t alter your healthy way of eating post gastric bypass. There are plenty of options that do not need to be “fresh foods” to keep on hand that are bariatric friendly, low carb and low sugar for meals. I managed to get eggs, yogurt, I have protein powder, protein bars, a few protein soups, I also have frozen foods I tend to buy vegetarian frozen foods. But depending on your stage there are options. Unopened cottage cheese and yogurt stays fresh longer check dates. You can buy canned proteins like tuna, chicken, etc. frozen vegetables. No reason to just stock up on carbs. Also try to find things to distract from worries besides food. If you are safe at home just try not to worry. @AJ Tylo is right there is nothing we can do to change the course of this. I’ve immunodeficiency and lifelong chronic illness and I can’t stress over this. I’m just doing my best to stay on track with what I can. even though I’m dealing with my own personal issues despite everything going on out there. Even though it’s hard as life gets thrown into a strange situation that’s new to you just try to take it one moment at a time and be grateful you are healthy and alive. I can’t play psychic as people seem to like to and say it’s gonna get better, just take it in the moment. And find things to occupy your mind. Get on track with getting hydration, and protein and don’t fall for carbs or comfort foods just because you think it will make you feel better. There are many other things you can do to find comfort and solace and distract your mind to feel better even if it’s just binge watching a really good tv show or taking a long walk alone in nature ... you don’t need a gym for that or to be around other humans either. side note if you can’t exercise compensate in other ways. I can’t exercise due to my chronic illness and disability. I follow a low carb way of eating, and calorie counting. But honestly even now you can find ways to get in some exercise, at home, alone in nature, etc. get creative ...
  10. Well......my surgery date on Friday was cancelled. I have been on this pre op diet for 10 days and not looking forward to doing it again at a later date.
  11. I have 10 pounds to go but now instead of losing I'm watching my weight stall and slowly creep up even. I don't feel that it's safe to go to the gym as my gym is crowded. I'm staying home, working from home and not doing my usual running around. I am much more sedentary now. There is much less access to fresh foods, store shelves are empty and we had to stock up on pasta, rice and canned food as a backup. Not to mention I seem to be eating my feelings more and more. Im really scared that my weight will continue to creep up! I know what everyone will say, do yoga on YouTube and stop stress eating. OK, easier said than done! This is a really scary time and I'm already so prone to anxiety but it's just been out of control. Being isolated is depressing and when you get depressed it's really hard to be disciplined and make a lot of effort. Is anyone in the same boat?

    Still hoping that mine goes off on time, but I have "volunteered" to fill any empty spot that may occur between now and then due to fear of COVID-19 or travel or whatever. I think my medical center is deciding as we speak about elective surgeries. Their concern is the shortage of PPEs (surgical gowns, masks, booties, hats and gloves) to keep a sterile environment in the ORs. *Shrug* We'll just have to wait and see.
  13. I suggest you do a little homework first. Call your insurance company and ask what are the requirements for WLS. Back in 2009 (lapband) the insurance i had the requirements were..... 35 bmi with 2 co morbids OR over 40 bmi with no co's. I quilified for the 40 bmi. I am also 5'2".... (this is one time where being short pays off). I was 232lbs so my bmi was around 42 i think. WLS was a life saver for me in so many ways. Because i had the LB my weight loss was so, but i stuck with it and followed the rules. Got to 143lbs and stayed there for nearly 8 years. Then in March of 2017, after years of zero problems, i got sick and for a week i threw up violently, slipped my band and had to have her removed. Over the next 2.5+ years (and starting menopause) i put back 30lbs of the 89 i lost. Which was still great.... but i hated how i felt. I also hated that no matter what i did.... diet, diet pills, not eating, tracking food, crossfit,.... nothing stopped it. After about a year without her i realized i wouldn't be able to keep all the weigh off with out some intervention. So i started looking for a Dr. to do a revision. My plan was to get the MGB, but no one would do it..... all i kept hearing was... You don't weigh enough.... ughhhh. I started plans to go down to Mex and have it done there.... then on a last ditch effort i called a local Dr. and had a meeting with him. He agreed that had i NOT been a previous WLS patient he would never do anything.... BUT because i was he could get me in as a "revision". So on Aug. 28, 2019 i went in for the Sleeve. No, it's not what i wanted, but i grabbed the chance and ran with it... that and 14K. Mex was about 9-10k i think. Yes i would have saved a few thousand, but it was worth the extra to have my dr. 10 min from me and not in Mex. Today, i happy at my current weight of 131lbs. The day i was sleeved i was 173.5lbs. Worth every cent of that 14k.
  14. Had revision, hernia repair and bowel resection on Thursday. Initially, I felt great but 5 hours after discharge I thought my insides were gonna fall out. Tylenol-Cod elixir doest not help much. 18 yrs ago, when I was very young I had a gastric bypass. It went well! Lost 180 Ibs ( lowest wt 126 Ibs, 4’11). Three years later I developed a vertical hernia that was repair. About 10 years in I developed strictures and could not hold any food down. A GI doc at my university dilated by esophagus and gastric pouch. I was furious with him but in hindsight he probably saved my life. The hernia repair was done with mesh which became painful. Due to Change insurances several time I was unable to find a bariatric doctor I felt comfortable with until now. I’m petty sure if your thyroid levels are controlled, gastric bypass will assist in weight loss. Probably remaining on a low carb, lean meat, low dairy diet and exercise 4-5 days a week may also help. That’s my plan!

    Day 12 feeling really crappy

    Cammy C, I just took a 2.5 hour nap. I've been lightheaded and weak. We are in the same boat, I'm on my cycle, already anemic. I only walked for my errands and was back in my car, I feel spent. I couldn't leave the house today and I have to pick you stuff for the house. Not to mention shopping is a real annoying task due to the panicky ppl. I don't want to whine, but really ppl get a grip!!! Yes, we need to be prepared, but I've seen hysteria! I have lost 10- 13 pounds because the scale is fluctuating. We will be fine, this takes time to get everything under control and for our bodies to be our friends again. Hydration is hard for me and I was a fish who drank plenty of water before surgery. Now it's a daunting task every single day, I never make my goal. I'm trying to increase my intake daily and learn my new stomach. I don't want to vomit or push my limits. All of you who have chimed in are great contributors to BP, experience is the best teacher. I'm going to get a little food in me and turn from the news.

  17. I was released from the hospital day 3 post-op and since then I've been walking between 10-20,000 steps a day (I did the same when I had the sleeve). I do get a little tired sometimes, but then I'll go home and have a big rest. FWIW, I was doing 20,000 steps because I was in Paris and did a lot of walking there - I'm sticking closer to the 10,000 mark now that I'm back home. I don't make it to 10,000 everyday, but I feel better getting out in the fresh air moving around that just sitting at home. To be fair, this is in line with what I was doing before surgery, so it's not like I'm pushing myself more than usual. This is usual for me. However, as other people have said, everyone is different. It's important to listen to your body. If you feel tired or are in pain, then maybe dial it back a bit. If not, keep going!
  18. My daughter's school had an exposure to COVID-19/Coronavirus in MA this week, so we were asked to self-quarantine/distance. I work from home and Boston's schools are out probably until April 27, so I'm guessing we're pretty much locked down in this little city apartment for the duration. My estimate is within the next week the whole country will be in this boat. While we're still able to get out for walks (maintaining social distancing) I did cancel my rowing classes in order not to be patient zero. (And, frankly, to avoid exposure.) I was able to lay in supplies of most of the things I currently eat on my plan, but I am definitely finding myself at the top end of my available calories every day. I'm not sure if it's stress eating, or being less busy, or what. And of course, I'll have to be leaning in more on non-perishables as this continues, so that may be worse. I know diabetes and obesity are both complicating factors for outcomes if infected, as well as some other pre-existing conditions that often accompany high weight. I don't suffer from those, but I'm wondering if those who do are concerned. How are you all coping with staying on plan, keeping active, and keeping stress low during this challenge?
  19. @Ostflicka I’m on day 11 of my cycle. I had my period 3/4-3/10–of course I started the day after my surgery I was just referring to the day of the cycle as in not pms. I started eating less prior to surgery because I feared the 14day liquid diet, which I only made it about 9 days all liquids. I cut my meals to once a day and had protein shakes for breaks lunch about 3 months before surgery. I lost 26 pounds prior to surgery and 10 since surgery. My friend just sent me some videos but Dr. V and she said the same things, I just have to give it time. @AJ Tylo Yes, sensay of vitamins 🙂 I’ve been taking Bariatric fusion multivitamin with the iron. I’m also taking In addition Sublingual B12, vitamin C, vit d3 2000 iu and omega-3. I bought citracal for the calcium citrate and that made me so sick! So I’ve ordered some calcium citrate chews from celebrate and awaiting for those to arrive. I have been drinking Gatorade zero in addition to the water. my friend who sent me the videos and has also had the sleeve and lost successfully told me I’m walking too much at this point. I walked 4 miles on Friday and 3.3 yesterday—is it too much? Is 10k steps to much to shoot for right now?? I appreciate your feedback.

    12 days is still so short of time to be feeling great. I mean I know everyone says that but the new normal sucks and wow you've been having your cycle for the past 11 days. Have you been menstruating that whole time? I got my period myself way early and it was longer than normal and I think my iron was low during that time which made me tired. Also it's a mind game too. I know you're tired and tired of being fat but it wasn't over night that we got this way. I know our expectations are so great and we compare ourselves to others, which makes it even harder to feel better. Also I don't know how your diet was before and if you were as low carb before your surgery, you could be kind of experiencing your body go through sugar withdrawals, I went on the Keto diet prior to surgery. The nutritionist was fine with it (I saw my nutritionist like at month 1 and had 5 to go) she wanted me to transition to low carb less fat closer to my surgery date but I remember getting off sugar and it was pretty awful. Did you have to do 10 days of full liquid diet prior to surgery? So many surgeons are so different, that's why I ask. I'm sorry there isn't just one little thing to fix and a variety of reasons why you might not feel so great. I'm wishing you the best of luck 🍀 in figuring it out. ❤️ Lean on the message boards if you don't have a great support system at home. Everyone seems to be pretty great on here.

    Ok, so I’m 10 days post opp and today I ran 4 days earlier than my doctors told me to (14th). And idk if I’m just stressing or overthinking but my port isn’t exactly where the incision is and I think it might be lower than it was before. Is this a known issue, is this a big issue and should I call my doctor or am I just being paranoid.
  22. Hi everyone! I’m almost 1 month post-op RNY (2/19/20). The pain in my belly near 2 of my incisions is finally gone! During my last visit to the NP, she told me that my pain was due to stitches in my muscle that had not dissolved yet. I’m on purée food now and beginning Tuesday I will be advanced to soft foods. I am so ready! I’ve been doing well on purées but I will be happy to eat more of a variety.

    Ah yes, smaller feet! That was unexpected but so true. Depending on the type of shoe I'm down a 1/2 size to 1 1/2 sizes. At my highest weight I was wearing a 10 1/2 (women's) for pumps, but now I'm a size 9. For ankle boots I need a 9 1/2, though. Most of the time I'm in athletic shoes and dressed casually - it was funny the day I was going out dressed up a bit and my dress shoes wouldn't stay on! Had no idea they'd become way too big. Had to stuff some paper in the toes to make the event since there was no time to get new shoes. Part of this may be because I'm much healthier now and am no longer retaining water in my legs and feet. Most of my shoes got donated if they were in good shape. Luckily I was never an Imelda Marcos-type person with hundreds of shoes.
  24. I’m 12 days post-op sleeve surgery today and feel terrible. I have not been out and about to get covid-19. I’ve been meeting my water and protein levels daily. I’ve incorporated some soft foods into my diet. I’ve tried Refried beans, eggs, creamy butternut squash soup with protein powder and prunes—all of these chewed very well. I’ve been walking a lot. I got my 10k steps in on Friday. Yesterday I started feeling tired around 4-5 pm and laid down so I only got around 7500 steps in. This morning I’m lightheaded and sipping my water again. I’ve been taking my vitamins like clockwork. I’m also down bc I haven’t lost any weight in two days and I’ve been more active and hydrated in the past two weeks than I’ve been in years and I’m not kidding. I know I’m going to be told to stay off the scale, but I just want the number to go down so bad! I’m so F*%#ing tired of being fat!!! I’m weepy. When I stretched out a few mins ago I almost passed out. I’m so tired and have been sleeping very well. I’m on day 11 of my cycle so that’s not it either. Why do I feel so bad when I’ve been doing all I can to feel better!?!?
  25. I'm almost 3 weeks out and was cleared to start trying all solids. Had some corned beef and carrots. No Ill effects. It was slow cooked for 10 hours so I think that helped.
