  1. Ok, so I am on day 10 of the liquid pre-op diet. I had lost 15 lbs. as of yesterday. Today, when I weighed, I had gained a pound!! How in the world could this happen?!?!?! I have been eating (drinking) the same things through this entire pre-op diet. If anything, I have started eating less as the days go on. I have gotten tired of my limited choices. Does anyone have any suggestions on what could be going on? I am being banded on Monday!!

    Aetna POS II

Yep!!! I had/have Aetna POS and they require three months if you follow the multi-phase plan (monthly weigh ins, nutritionist, counseling, etc.). My surgeon kept telling me six until they called and Aetna verified it was only three. One thing I will tell you is they sat on my application for two weeks and no one touched it until I called the headquarters (only number I could find) and got to speak to a person in preauth. Once that happened they approved in less than 24 hours. I started the process in July and had surgery on 11/19.

    Loosing weight before the Operation?:(

I am scheduled for my surgery through the Healthier Weight Centre in the UK for August 25. I went to one consultation and was approved for the surgery with a BMI of 41. They sent me my pre-op diet food that I have to be on for 10 days before the surgery but they certainly didnt require that I lose weight before a consulation. The weight loss thing is only to shrink the stomach and liver to prepare them for surgery. They told me since my BMI isn't that high that I could follow the pre-op diet quiet loosely, yours is lower than mine. I can't see what the fuss is.

    Day after Surgery

I had my surgery yesterday. I stayed overnight since we live 3 hours away from the sugery center. Now I'm on a liquid diet for 3 days, then thick liquids for two weeks, then two weeks of mushies. My follow up visit is local and is next week. First fill I believe isn't until week 4. I'm doing great....so far my pain is really just a little discomfort and soarness....about a 1 or 2 out of 10. I was worried it would be way worse then this, but it really isn't bad at all. It is a great relief. I'm taking pain medicine only at night to help with sleeping, but I'm just fine in the day. I had chicken broth with unjury chicken soup added in for protein today. I'm not hungry at all....but I know I need to get liquid and protein in for healing. I found out my original surgeon had cornea transplants.....good god, how bad were his eyes? The replacement surgeon was awesome, he had about 20 years of doing these types of surgeries.
  6. How did I know that I would end up a stuffy mess right before surgery? I've been working on this process for 7 months, I finally have surgery in 10 days and I'm sick! I'm almost afraid to go to the Dr. For fear that they'll tell me I can't get surgery because I'm sick. Stuffy, sore throat, ear ache. If they put my on antibiotics, do you think that would delay my surgery for any reason?

Doctors Discussing Weight Loss With Patients

They're not saying that doctors shouldn't tell you you're overweight and they need to lose weight. They're saying that telling you you need to lose weight without giving you the proper tools on how to do anything about it is a negative. If I tell you to go cook a fancy dinner but don't tell you where to buy the ingredients for what recipe do you use you're just going to get frustrated and upset. The request and advice to lose weight it should be accompanied by solid information, or a specific treatment plan so that the patient doesn't feel discouraged. Weight loss is hard if you don't have the tools or the knowledge to do it. HW 385 SW 359 Sleeved 10/5/16

  9. I'm another one with Lupus...So glad to hear that some of you are feeling better since the surgery. For those who aren't, I'm sending you best wishes for glowing good health and soon! I'm set to have my surgery on July 2. I'm lucky because I have no major organ involvement with my Lupus. My only symptoms are sore joints and muscles (not even usually bad enough to take pain killers), a malar rash, lots of hair loss, and pretty hard-core fatigue. The fatigue is the worst. I sleep about 10 hours a day, plus naps, and can't keep up with a full-time job. I'm an elementary teacher, but I only work half time. Holding up my coffee cup is tiring! My parents are worried that the surgery will complicate the Lupus stuff. But I keep thinking that if nothing else, walking around 100 pounds lighter has got to help with the tiredness....I mean, if I was carrying around 100 pounds of potatoes and someone lifted them off me, I would be a whole new woman, right? By then I would be a bald woman, of course... But if that's the deal, I'll take it!
  10. 10-15lbs in 3 wks???? yeah that's a LOT to ask from someone who probably doesn't have over 100lbs to lose. that said; my dr suggested 6-8lbs per month was adequate for someone like me, who he suggested a 60lb loss. that really doesn't sound attainable - but if you can do it ... more power to ya!!! seriously. my port hurt well into month 2. all i was doing was cardio - walking & elliptical at that time; wasn't doing ab or core exercises. took me a bit of time, i didn't have much belly fat to mask it's presence - the port (maybe???). take it easy. there is no race in lbs dropped or how soon you can do crunches. congrats to date on your progress!!!!
  11. I am three weeks post-op and saw my surgeon today. He advanced me to soft food (from pureed or mushies). I weighed 188. I was 196 on the day of surgery. He wants me to lose 10-15 pounds in 3 weeks. Doesn't that seem like a lot? Aren't we supposed to (as with any diet) lose about 1-2 pounds a week? I have been exercising. I have not had a fill yet. My other question. My port area still hurts. Is that normal? My surgeon said it's probably because I am doing more. Then I remember that my abdominal incision from my hysterectomy was sore to the touch for 3 years and my lumpectomy (for breast cancer) still is sore to the touch after 6 years. Thanks.

    wierd reaction

I was given a hand out with my pre op diet and here is what they mention to be aware of in the pre op phase (also the post op 2 weeks I am sure too) 1 - Intolerance to cold 2 - Light-headedness on rising, due to Water loss 3 - Fatigue 4 - Dry skin, dry hair, and brittle nails 5 - Temporary loss of some hair 6 - Change in bowel habits 7 - Headache, especially in the first few weeks 8 - Improvement in fertility 9 - Bad Breath 10 - Gallstones & Gall Bladder On the form for the Bad Breath is where it says to massage the gums because you won't be eating anything. I know my lips have been really dry, same with my forehead and my hands feel really tight like they are drying up. I hope that helps a little but I believe the dryness will continue until we start to eat again.
  13. I am 8 days out of surgery. I have lost about 10 pounds. However I did not lose any weight from yesterday to today。

    Food Funeral

For me, it was right after I got my approval. I guess knowing that the surgery had been approved made it "real" and caused me to go into food funeral mode. In my case, I gained 10 lbs and got a right good talking to by the surgeon. By my surgery date, I'd gotten those 10lbs. back off, but I can't help but think how much further along I'd be if I hadn't indulged. Also, now that I'm almost 4 months out and can eat pretty much anything, I feel a bit foolish about it because I haven't really had to say "goodbye" to anything I really like.
  15. Trust me it will get so much better! I was the same way! 65lbs and only down 2 sizes! I was so mad and frustrated for so long but then seriously in the blink of an eye I am in a 12... And a 10 is not far behind (I just bought the 12s last week!!) That chart someone posted with the inches of hips and size seems to be right on target for me. Congrats on all the weight you have lost!
  16. I'm wondering how I'm going to do this too, especially the whole "small sips of water all day" thing. I work graveyard in the lab, 10 hour shifts. We get 2-15 min breaks and a 30 min lunch. In reality I'm lucky to get 2 breaks. It's going to be a PITA to unglove/ungown/wash everytime I need to get a drink of water. I guess I will cross that bridge when I come to it. I'm thinking of telling my supervisor that I just need more, smaller breaks.
  17. Ah, I miss the 4 am Denny's runs after those "19-year-old male with profuse vomiting, alcohol ingestion" 911 calls! These days, when I'm away at school all day, I pack hardboiled eggs, small yogurt containers, Protein shakes, and a couple of wheels of Babybel cheese - Gouda is my favorite, it's quite soft. I don't know if you are doing a low-carb thing, but I also like fruit. Right now, I've got plums and persimmons in the fridge.

    Not losing consistently

I've averaged about 10 pounds a month in the 6 months since I've had my surgery (down 64 since surgery, 94 total). My loss is much slower than I expected it to be and even got discouraged early on because my surgeon asked me why I wasn't losing more weight at my first 2 post op appointments. I've noticed that I tend to lose on a pattern and I stall every month for 1-2 weeks around my period. It's frustrating but it's my bodies way to dealing with this process so I've come to accept it. I started this process a year ago July 19th and I'm down just under 100 pounds so the frustration and stress has been worth it in the long run. I would like to lose another 37 pounds to reach my ultimate goal.

    Warning to new sleeves

I am going through this too ... just started mushies two days ago. I chew as much as I can and swallow, then wait to take a bite, etc. Yesterday I needed to go meet my mom and ate my lunch without taking a long enough break between bites, and within a few minutes I was feeling like I was going to vomit -- thankfully I didn't throw up, but I needed to sit down and keep my eyes closed for a good 10-15 minutes until the nausea passed. At dinner last night I ate with my husband (something I had stopped doing while on full liquids, because I couldn't stand to watch him eat food while I was stuck on liquids). I had pureed takeout chicken curry for me and DH had lamb vindaloo. It was hilarious. I could only eat I think 3 or 4 small bites, chewed to oblivion -- and then my tummy had that feeling like, "don't put anything else in here, girlie, or I am going to punish you!" So in the time it took my husband to eat a big serving of vindaloo, a big piece of naan, and about 10 pieces of chicken pakora (kind of like Indian style chicken nuggets), I had eaten this TINY amount of chicken (less than 1/8 cup) and still had more than half the portion I had measured out for myself (which I never did finish, btw). Of course I remember that before surgery I could put away nearly the same amount of food as DH while eating, and it such a strange and crazy and almost sad experience to eat dinner with him now. I have to eat so slowly and cautiously, and my head/mouth wants to keep eating but my tummy says "don't you dare!" Don't get me wrong, I am so happy to have this tool. But it truly is a new way of eating -- literally I am learning how to eat all over again, like I'm a baby. I intellectually knew this would be happening prior to surgery, but like most other life lessons it's one thing to understand it intellectually and a whole other thing to experience it. And it is challenging and plain old weird!

    Always on the go......

This procedure is pretty serious business. It will be changing your life. Pre-op diets not only prepare your liver for surgery but also prepares you for post-op eating. Planning meals is super important to success. It's time to slow down and make time for your meal plans. As much as we believe we are "on the go" we really can carve those times we need. Think about what your willing to drop everything for now and transfer that same desire to planning. Instead of going out to eat, drive to the grocery store and shop for the week. If you go to bed at 10 stop what your doing at 9 and prep three meals for the next day. It really is all about making these healthy changes a priority. Take care

    Urinating Pain (males)

Hi OKC, no catheter was not used thanks god. They were threatening me with it all day after I woke up on surgery day Monday. I tried 3 times to go to no avail. Finally they gave me a deadline if I didn't go by 10pm they would insert catheter. I muscled out of bed right around 10 and waited and waited.. Finally like a faucet lol. Filled the jug; gave it to nurse and attempted to go back to sleep. I'm wondering if it's because lack of of Fluid intake post op. Like above poster says, although I'm drinking 3 16 oz Poland spring Water bottles plus crystal light. Can't believe how long it takes me to consume 1 16" bottle of water! Damn! Stuck Already?!

Please don't take this the wrong way. It only been 5 days. The first 10 pounds (maybe more) was water weight. You now need to either burn 3500 cals or cut 3500 cals from your food intake in order to loose 1 pound.! Also some people gain a few pounds from the surgery itself ( from the IVs's).
  24. I started to get leg cramps last night in the calf muscle. My understanding is that deficiencies in nutrients like magnesium and zinc may cause cramping. Two questions: 1. My Multivitamin says it has 10% magnesium and 200% zinc. Not sure, but I also may be getting these from my Protein intense diet. 2. I have really increased my exercise this week where I have averaged an hour of intense cardio a day. I do still drink 100+ oz Water a day and 125 grams protein a day. Your thoughts?

    Alcohol...

I was 5 weeks out and went slow the first time. I am now approx 10 weeks out and have gone out for drinks about 4x total. I have decided to stick with vodka/water with an occasional shot of tequila in there. I have had no issues and my tolerance has been somewhat impacted. Take it slow and see how your body handles it. I always have a Powerade Zero waiting at home or in my purse because it can take up to 2 days for me to feel fully hydrated if I do not stay on top of during my drinks and the day after.
