  1. Just be careful about what you eat. I do not understand why the Drs feel the need to take out so much even.1 of a cc makes a huge difference. Maybe you can get in earlier to get a fill. Hang in there! The times time I had to have a small unfill one was 0.1 cc and it was like night and day in the difference. I also had to have another .2 cc taken out after I went in for ½ cc and I tell them when I go in there I am too tight but I only want .10 taken out and if that is not enough I will come back again. I even hold my hand over my port till they agree lol. Cheri

    ANTHEM BCBS OF OHIO

For the record I went to my first WLS seminar end of July. My first surgical consult was 8/6. Everything else was done and paperwork submitted by first of October and I was sleeved 10/21.

    Stall or Not ?!

Stalls happen, it could just be your body adjusting to the rapid weight loss you had directly out of surgery. It's hard to know for sure without knowing what exactly you are eating and how much. It also could be partially due to being dehydrated. When I had the stomach bug a month ago I lost 10 pounds in 1 day and it took a good month for me to fully rebound. I gained back and then relost the weight I lost from the lack of fluids while sick.
  4. Remember, today you are not only fight head hungry, you are fighting real hunger, in a stretched out stomach. I had my surgery 10 days ago and I can't believe how NOT hungry I am. I do have some head cravings, but I recognize them for that and move along to something else. I think once you are sleeved and healed you will think this is the best decision you every made. Good luck on your surgery in a few days......it will work out fine and you can start your new healthier life!

    7 days post op

No stall if you diet right. I've lost 7-10 lbs every month since surgery because of my diet. I'm down 100lbs in 7 months! No stalls here.
  6. OK I'm gonna vent a little. I'm a person that never gets sick. And I can set up an alarm w my TOM it's always on time. As I am preparing for my surgery April 10 my TOM disappeared, (no chances of me being pregnant at all) I only spotted. Then I feel like I'm getting a cold. And now that I'm doing my preop diet I'm waking up w bad headaches and I can't take meds. Maybe I'm stressing too much. I've never had a missed TOM.

    Please help , REDLANDS CA

Yes ma'am. After you talk with your primary, they'll referral you through IEHP. I think I received a call from Dr. Krahns office, 2 or 3 weeks after my appt with my PCP, telling me about the seminar. They hold it I believe twice a month, at like 6 or 6:30 pm at St B's (in a conference room by the cafeteria)... Once you confirm the seminar, you'll get a packet and info to fill out (basically asking what have you tried to lose weight and medical history). I filled mine out before the seminar since I arrived early. During the seminar there'll be some people who work in his office there telling you about the four different types of bypass' and go over any questions you'll have. I think by the time everything was said and done and questions were asked and answers, I think i was there for 2 ish hours. About two weeks I received a call from Dr. Krahns office to schedule my first appt. My first appt was Dec 28th, and there they double checked my medical history and talked about with surgery would be best for me. I was given a giant packet to study and keep for after surgery and was given a "quiz" packet to answer to return back in at my next appt. I was also asked to follow a low carb, high protein diet and to lose 5-10% of weight. My next appt is Feb 2nd, with my PCP for my medical clearance, and also Dr.Krahn's office. Hopefully I'll get my surgery date and do the other necessary requirements done for surgery.
  8. Amazing - congrats!! I'm almost 3months out from surgery and very close to my goal well. VSG 10/11/17 HW = 360 SW = 292 CW = 240.4 GW = 220 (6'5")
  9. As the title suggests, I am having to do a liquid pre-op diet for 3 weeks, I’m getting sleeved 6/9. My diet started on Tuesday, 5/19 and it’s now Friday, 5/22 and I am HUNGRY! I haven’t been hungry like this any other day. My stomach is rumbling and even though I can have broth and sugar free jello / popsicles, it’s not helping the hunger. My diet is as follows: 3 protein shakes, 2 protein bars as snacks + unlimited low sodium broth, SF hello, SF popsicles. Any tips or words of encouragement would be greatly appreciated. My tummy would appreciate it i’m sure!
  10. Hi Ladies...I have a question for you... I have been banded for almost 10 months now and have only lost about 40lbs. That comes out to about 1 lb a week. A WHOPPING ONE POUND A WEEK! No matter how hard I try. I was wondering if it had anything to do with my birth control. I have the Mirena IUD. Have any of you ladies experienced trouble losing weight because of your birth control? I'm considering getting it removed to see if I lose more weight.

I have the same IUD and I haven't had any trouble losing weight. Surgery date: 1/25/10
  12. My insurance co requires 6 month diet with pcp, my question is though.. Do they count full months or just 6 visits within the 6 months? The reason I'm asking is I started 6 month thin 4/1 so 10/1 would be my 6 visits, but 10/30 would be a full 6 months. Any idea of which the insurance would require???? I'm trying to squeeze this in by the end of the year....So any shortcuts I can muster would be good.
  13. I was banded May 13. I went in for the Pre-Op on the day before, and asked to report to the Hospital at 7:30 am. I was not called in untill almost 10:00am. I started my Protein diet 2 weeks before at 240 and on Surgery day I was 223. Nurse started the IV, gave me a shot of anticlog med., put on leg massagers and was taken in for surgery at about 11:00 am. Next thing I remember I was in recovery being to move from bed to a recliner. I was taken for the x-ray and asked to go to the restroom and given a sip of juice. I was given instructions to go home and was discharged at 2 pm. The first 3 days were the hardest in the sence that it was so hard to get in and out of bed and out of chairs. I did not have problems with the shoulder pain, Thank God. But gas was some what uncomfortable. I am still on liquids. I've been having cream soups. I put them in the blinder and use water instead of milk and it does the job. I do get full very quick. I am not able to eat nearly as much as before. I went back to work yesterday and by noon I was tired and very sore. I got home at 3pm took med and slept until this morning. So all seems to be going good. My coworkers say that they are able to see a big difference already. I have not actually weighed myself yet, but I did notice some shirts fitting a little lose. Did anyone have surgery on the same day or close enough that can share their experience with me?? Good luck to all.
  14. Hi! I had a lapband on 5/4/07 by Dr. Korus. I did well in the beginning and had lost 60 lbs. For the last six months, I do not get filled up and have been eating much more. I have gained 10 pounds. I have had 5 adjustments with no success-the last one being on 5/13. I had an endoscopy and he thought the band might have been up a little high; however, I was the first patient he ever did with an band. I had another adjustment with barium swallow and Dr. Korus felt that the band looked fine. Does anyone have this problem and any suggestions on what I should do? I am becoming very depressed about this and really want to succeed. I have about another 50 pounds to lose. Thanks. Judy

    Got My Pre-Op Diet...oh Boy!

I won't actually start the diet until 10 days before surgery. My nutritionist just went over everything and gave me my meal plan because I won't see her again until after surgery.

    fluids question

I always have water nearby (even while eating for emergency) but I try and wait 30-45 mninutes after eating. Then I drink some water/decaf coffee. I usually drink at least 16-20 ounces just prior to eating (or within 10 minutes of eating) to give me a fuller sensation so 1 cup is plenty of food for my meal. My doctor wants me around 64 ounces a day at minimum.

    Countdown to band day!

Hi Sharon, I am supposed to go in to surgery at 10 am but of course like they told you, that can change. I am so anxious for this to get moving. I know we will be on a strictly liquid diet. I was so ticked on this one...first few days had nothing but liquids, then found out that I could have vegetables and salads (of course nothing except vegetables on the salads). I just use lettuce and tomatoes and a spritzer salad dressing on it which satisfies me just fine. I have a protein shake in the morning and a salad at night with a lot of crystal light and green tea during the day and evening as well as a few sugar free popcicles in the evening. Now that diet after the surgery....hmmm! Of course I may not feel like eating anything. My main problem is drinking enough fluids and exercising enough. I have a problem with one of my feet and it sure makes it difficult to exercise and I cannot go swimming until it heals. Hopefully if I get enough of this weight off, it will heal enough to allow me to be able to swim in a public pool. I haven't had the privilege to speak to anyone who has had the surgery except those on these message boards and for the most part, they don't seem to think the pain is too bad. I am not thinking about that too much, I am concerned about how I will be about eating and keeping the food down or getting it down. I detest throwing up. That is my biggest fear. We must keep in contact as much as possible ok? I have only been to one support group meeting...hospital is a few towns away and with this foot (my right foot, wouldn't you just know) it makes driving a problem. I can call you if you want. Jodi

    Approval for couples, anyone????

My husband and I both had surgery this year. Mine was on 10/22/08 and his on 12/23/08. We had cinga insurance. they gave us a little scare with my hubby, denied him but we appealed and they came through. Made no sense to me since his bmi was 55 and mine was 38. I was diabetic though. He has a cpap machine for sleep apnea.
  23. It is so true that comparing yourself to others is not a good approach. It will only result in feelings of failure. That said, I am also one month out and have lost a total of 17 lbs. since surgery. However, I will be honest that like you, I have been exercising minimally. So, I made a resolution today to make the most of this very valuable tool (the sleeve) and really do my best for optimal results. So today was my first day back in the gym (I had only been walking before) and I hit the elliptical for 30 mins., did some lights weight for my arms, and about 10 mins in the steam room. I am going to do this at least 3x/week and see what kind of difference it makes. It is easy and convenient to just label yourself a "slow loser" and do the bare minimum. However, I think we owe it to ourselves to really push and make the most of the advantage we have with the sleeve to get optimal results. I want to succeed, and I know you do to. Now, after all this I still may not be the fastest or biggest loser. But what I will be is confident that I tried my best and put my best foot forward. So, do you wanna take this next step with me and take the "minimal" out of your exercise regimen? I have a feeling we will not be sorry. Here's to a fresh start!

    xray advice please

The fluoroscope (barium swallow) with fills is a normal procedure and many doctors (not all) utilize it to ensure proper restriction. The amount of radiation you receive is low. You would get more radiation from a 3 hour flight on an airplane than from this simple and quick procedure. I was a nuclear medicine technologist and am well versed in radiation safety. I have no concerns what so ever in the amount of radiaiton I will receive from this procedure, even if I have to have 10 fills in one year. Besides I'd rather have my fills by fluoro than not; how would the doctor know if the barium can pass through the newly adjusted opening? But please talk to your doctor for reassurance. (If you are pregnant you MUST inform your doctor.)
  25. @M Ashley - I have definitely seen an improvement in my PCOS symptoms since surgery. I have always had horrible hair growth (I'm talking 5 o'clock shadow here...), a severe skin condition called acanthosis nigricans (the darkened skin you may have around your neck, under arms, chest, etc), all around bad skin no matter what I did, hormone surges, inability to lose weight, irregular periods even on birth control, etc. The list goes on and on. My disorder made everyday life hellish for me from the moment my body started going through puberty, and the women in my family start young. I was 8 when the symptoms started and had just turned 10 when I got my first period. Before surgery, I was on a lot of metformin, birthcontrol, and a medication called spironolactone that is normally used for high blood pressure but for me was helping to control hormone fluctuations and in turn reduce my symptoms. I stopped metformin a few days before surgery in preparation for the surgery, and was told I never had to start it again. I still take birth control and spironolactone, but these medications are actually helping me now, whereas before they barely touched my symptoms. I guess my disorder is just that severe. I can happily say that my skin condition has disappeared without a trace, my periods are now pretty regular, and I'm actually losing weight (albeit a bit slower than anticipated, probably because PCOS still has me in its grasp. But I'm not complaining!). My skin has even cleared up and looks and feels healthy now. All in all, this surgery has improved or fixed pretty much every single health issue I've been suffering from my entire life. I'm so, so grateful.
