  1. Well its exactly one year since I got my sleeve. I am so glad that I was able to do this. I cannot believe the difference in myself. As the pounds fell off, I gained my independence and gained myself-esteem back. That alone was worth every penny it cost me. I was beginning to become a hermit, happy to stay home and never face anyone again. Yes, the preop diet was hard. I was sick and nauseated for weeks after and my recovery was slow. Would I do this again? in a heartbeat, I wish I could have done it years ago. If you are thinking about the surgery and are still on the fence. If I could do this, you can too

    The surgeon gave me three choices that my insurance takes and I called one. That was Wednesday and I had an appointment for two weeks later that day. I need to know what they will charge me before I show up. I have Medicare and I will start calling Monday.

    Drinking Water

    I'm going on 7 weeks post op and have struggled. I haven't hit 60 oz in quite a while. I did go to the doctor to check in, but they didn't feel like I was dehydrated enough. I wish I could get an IV to see if it made a difference, honestly. I can go all day without peeing. Yesterday I was able to hit goal, so I hope that I can continue that.

    25lb more to go...

    25lb more to go to reach my goal weight. Decided to weigh myself a week or so early from my usual 4th of the month. getting there. 6 more pounds and i will be under 200 So that is my goal for the next week and a half is to loose as much of that 5lb as possible lol.
  6. Oh am I glad to know this pain will go away but I’m so uncomfortable when I’m trying to sleep I’m literally sitting up on the couch right now… been taking the Tylenol and just was icing. But whoa man…I go back to work next week and I’m praying it’s gone by then… I may hit my doc up if it don’t go because I hate being uncomfortable when I sleep… I’m 24 days post op and definitely taking it slow…but man oh man…
  7. Lifestyle changes are a major part of any long term weight loss & maintenance plan regardless of whether you have surgery or not. To return to eating the same way as you did before is a guarantee of weight regain. How & what you eat in the long term is up to you & how to manage it so it works with your lifestyle. Many are more flexible in their food choices & eat foods which may be considered unhealthy at times. But they don’t do it everyday, watch portion sizes & they accept it will result in a some regain & maintenance at a higher weight. It’s all about balance & sustainability. It’s important to keep to the no fluids 30 mins before & after eating while you’re losing to avoid filling up on them & flushing the food through your tummy more quickly. Plus you’ll be sipping & drinking all through the day so you won’t really feel thirsty at meal times. As time passes you’ll discover the amount of time you need to leave before & after eating. It may just be 5 minutes. And you eventually won’t miss drinking while eating. Just another of the new habits you’ll adopt. Taking vitamins long term isn’t always needed with a sleeve. The only reason you may need to continue to take additional vitamins is because you are lacking in something. I haven’t taken vitamins since 8 months post surgery. My blood work showed & continues to show I’m not lacking in anything & have no need to take supplements. Except, this year we realised my vitamin D levels drop in winter so I take D only then. Nothing to do with the surgery - just me & my sun avoidance ( am very fair). I weigh 2kgs more now than I did at my lowest weight. I put on the weight at the end of last year after a necessary dietary change (don’t absorb protein well since my gall was removed) & a medication change. Don’t like it but accept it for what it is. Sometimes things are beyond your control. I’ve never been able to maintain like this after weight loss. I’d be regaining in a couple of weeks after a diet. I work at it every day. I watch what & how much I eat. Don’t exercise as such but have a series of stretches, sit ups & resistance bands exercises I do almost every day. A lot of this is discovering what you need & what works for you.

    I have a Dec. 8th appointment. They said three hours. Two of testing and one hour with the shrink. Does anyone know what that covers? It seems like a lot to get approved.

    August surgery buddies!

    You've still lost 40 pounds, which is a lot. I did feel a bit bad, reading all the posts here from people who have lost 40+ and 50+ pounds, when I've only lost 36. Still, I've never lost more than 10-15 pounds in the last ten years or more, and always ended up gaining them back. Normally, I'd lose the 10 pounds or so in a few weeks, then stall no matter what I did, and then regain. Sometimes slowly, sometimes more quickly. Sometimes I'd manage to keep 10 pounds off for a while, but it always ended the same way. So, in that context, 36 is not too shabby. I hope I too will get to the 40+ pounds lost soon, maybe even this year.

    Thank you, i am trying to stay positive. These protein shakes are almost unbearable at this point though. I am so glad i found the unflavored isopure still its hard I have two weeks liquids so everyday seems endless to just get to surgery date.
  11. believe it or not, my two-week pre-surgery diet was more restrictive than yours. I was only allowed no-calorie fluids, 4-5 protein shakes, sugar free Jello, sugar free popsicles, and one cup of broth or tomato juice a day.

  13. Hi MChaney, every program is different and should follow your programs guidelines. Mine was different in which I could have some real protein but that was my program You can ask your team about including some turkey breast and veggies and get their approval. I would also invite you to reflect on your decision, is one day being traded for a better life.   14. I am currently 5 weeks post op and have found that I am way more happy about the non-scale victories than I am with losing pounds. So, I thought that I'd make a forum where we can all celebrate our non-scale victories! Whether it be wrapping a bath towel fully around you, getting in your car when someone else has parked too close, or maybe even that you did 20 minutes on the treadmill for the first time ever! Let's celebrate these wins!
  15. Hey folks I need advise please! They put me on the two week pre-op diet today and I'll post their guidelines below. Tomorrow is Thanksgiving, can I get by with cheating just tmro if I stuck to just about meat and veggies? Will that impact me if I have Thanksgiving dinner? This is also odd, they told me I am to have NOTHING but what's on the list.. that includes meat and eggs... That's protein so I dont understand why I can't have that? Even if it's tuna or something. Can I get some advise please, I'm really frustrated. If need be I'll stay home and not go to Thanksgiving but I don't want to have to do that if I don't have to.   16. While any reason or concern we have is completely valid, the pro's outway the con's. Yes, you have to change the way you eat forever but with the strict diet phases over the first 4-8 weeks, you learn everything you need to know. The first month is the hardest. I was worried I wouldn't be disciplined enough to follow it but after 80% of your stomach is removed you really don't have a choice but to follow it. By the time your body allows you to tolerate more, you're already set up with those healthy habits. You can do this!

    Accidently been drinking coffee

    there is absolutely no consensus at all among surgeons re: the caffeine issue. Some say you can never have it again for the rest of your life. Some patients are allowed to drink it before they even leave the hospital. Still others say you have to wait one month, or three months, or six months. And then others say it's OK as long as you limit it to 1-2 cups a day. My take on this is that it's not the worst thing you can do. Follow your plan from here on out just so, if asked, you can say you followed the plan - but don't worry about the slip up.

    3.5 weeks PO Gastric Sleeve DUMPING?!

    I was told to start on eggs at week 3, but i just get painful cramps and liquid poop and that's just from eating a teaspoon or 2. They also said avocados and bananas might be too tough, but with my ninja blender, it's perfectly puree and those 2 things i can eat all of within about 90 mins and feel great after. Puree beef with gravy is also fine for me, but i can only eat a few teaspoons over an hour. Might be your body saying "This isnt a food i'm ready for yet" if that's the case, maybe skip it and try another food.
  19. Hi Bariatric Pals So I found out today from a friend who had the gastric sleeve 1 week before me, that you can't have coffee/Caffeine for 1-3 months post op. I had no idea. I tried to call my surgeons office but they're away overseas until mid December. I will stop drinking my morning coffees from now on, but I'm only a few weeks post PO and I've had coffee with almond milk for the past 5 days. So I'm freaking out. I haven't had any Nausea or acid reflux, 😰 I'm just worried that I may have done something really bad. Any advice on this?

    November 2022 Surgery Buddies

    11/3 surgery… 20 days post op… infection nearly cleared.. incisions are healing up, a couple already done… feeling good overall!! Still not on par with liquids and food (purée) is a chore but I am ok with that…had zero excitement for purée or any of the food things I was looking forward to pre surgery but I guess that comes with the new normal… getting waves of emotional… that’s expected but always exhausting… no regrets so far even with the setback! it’s also weird I have both more energy and a lot less stamina… when I am going, I can go faster and with more pep in my step.. but I am still crashing by early evening … getting better since I can stay up past nine now which I didn’t for the first two weeks …. hope everyone is doing well!

  22. I am in the middle of the two week liquid pre-op so there will be no thanksgiving eating for me but I am going focus on what I am thankful for and enjoy my liquid diet. Its only one day, I keep telling myself that over and over LOL
  23. Will you be home for Thanksgiving or at a family event? I will be at home on the holidays so I will eat as usual. Like you breaking your stall (congrats), the weight loss and fear of gaining it back, are great motivators not to go overboard during the holidays. I count calories, weigh my food no matter what. If on vacation, or a special event, I eat a bite of different things, log them right after the meal. If I can't log at the time, I take snapshots of the dish before I eat (and after) so I can remember what I ate and how much I ate, then log later. 24/7, 365 days/year.
  24. We don't do thanksgiving here but last holiday season I was 6 weeks post op and eating at a relative's house. I hadn't told anyone I had had the surgery so I actually cheated on purpose that day so I could eat more than usual and not draw attention to myself. So I ate the carbs first, veg second, protein little and last, and I kept drinking liquid to get it all through my pouch. I've cheated on purpose a few times since too. It's useful to know the rules (and break them) in certain situations if you don't dump (the risk I took!!!) Also brought home to me how very easy it is to eat around the pouch - even that close to surgery I managed about half a proper dinner. I'll be doing the same this year. However - that isn't what you asked OP! When I'm eating celebration meals at home I do it on a side plate and just have a tiny bit of everything. And I have never felt like I'm missing out. I hope you can too.

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

    I hope this was a pep talk and not a lecture! If it helps you refocus then brilliant. You've already done so well, he's probably just willing you to go further. I came here to wish all my November 2021 friends a happy anniversary. I'm just past mine, pretty much done losing at this point I think - I've lost 1lb in the last 5 weeks, but I am maintaining without too much thought. I still do track every single bite I eat, just out of habit, and I think I need to! It would be so easy to slip. I hope you are all happy with where you are, and that those of us who still have a bit to go can keep it up! Would you have believed a year ago you would lose what you have? I certainly wouldn't. 🤩 Just for the record I weigh 154lbs, that's a total loss of 122lbs since 2 months pre-op and 97lbs since the day of surgery. I'm maintaining on about 1400 calories a day on weekdays and probably 1700-1800 at the weekend because I drink alcohol then.
