What was the biggest surprise for you at or after surgery? What do you wish you had known?
Missy161 replied to sunmeadow's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am surprised how different every protocol is. I had my sleeve on 6/22 a Thursday. My dr had me in protein shakes the day after surgery and yogurt and applesauce by Tuesday. My recovery has been seamless. He had me in ground meat and fish 2 weeks after surgery. I haven't had any nausea at all and very little pain. By far the easiest surgical recover I have ever had. I have had 4 c sections and a gall bladder removed and this was the easiest. -
2 week pre op liquid diet- 3 Days in
GotProlactinoma replied to Kyle Lukas's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm on two shakes (i choose unflavored, unsweetened because I hate drinking sweet things) and a meal of meat and veggies. I save one shake for night time before bed because it is just such a wonderful way to end the day not starving. I hold off on the first shake til noon, but after eating it 1.5 hours later I start "starving" until say 6 pm dinner. The whole afternoon I can't function, just weak and hungry and growling stomach. It's awful. I would never do this except that it shrinks the liver, making surgery easier for the surgeon. That is the only reason I am sticking to it. I can't have anything else, no yogurt or broth, or all those sugar free treats you guys have, apparently. This sucks. -
Weight loss doing great, but darn, I'm always hungry!!!
Joann454 replied to gwbicster's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have to agree that it's head hunger or too many carbs or acid. Little changes can make a big difference. For instance, switch the nuggets for a grilled chicken sandwich and take it off the bun. You won't finish it but you're missing the breading that's on the nuggets. Stay away from the mashed potatoes and go for mashed cauliflower or Greek yogurt. The thing is, if we don't change our relationship with food, down the road you'll be able to eat all the nuggets plus fries. So practice making good choices now. Even though it's just a little bit of food it won't be eventually. It won't always be so draconian and you want to take advantage of this short window where it's easier to drop the lbs Ok, but that's not really what you asked specifically. Yes, I've gone through this. I'm only seven weeks out but it's already much easier. It's become more normal to eat tiny amounts and not miss big meals. I've made myself physically ill once. I don't doubt that I'll do it again down the road. My advice is to find a therapist who specifically deals with Bariatric patients. Congrats on your phenomenal weight loss though. That's amazing! -
Best advice is to not buy too much of one thing in the beginning I am 17 days out after gastric sleeve. I have a pantry full of boxes of bone broth ,cream soups, and a frig full of different protein shakes I hate. I found a protein milk at publix called Rockin refuel it's awesome. Chocolate taste just like chocolate milk and the vanilla taste like icecream. Has 30 grams protein. And I love oikos triple zero Greek yogurt has 15 grams protein the strawberry and salted caramel are my favorites. I got some unflavored protein powder to add to my soups. I've made a smoothie using fat free skim milk protein powder and fresh strawberries added splenda. Also crushed ice is my friend. I go to sonic and get bags of pellet ice and keep in my fridge. When I need to chomp on something it's there. Hope this helps. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N900A using BariatricPal mobile app

I was sleeved June 22. I'm still in the pureed stage. I've had problems finding foods that agree with me. I hate broth and cream soups I've mostly lived on oikos triple zero Greek yogurt it has 15 grams protein and I found some awesome protein milks at publix called Rockin refuel it has 30 grams protein. But started getting burned out. Now my favorite go to that agrees with me is cheerios. I put about 1/2 cup in fat free (skim) milk and add 1 packet of splenda.you can add some unflavored protein powder. Just let the cereal sit in milk it soft and chew it up good. It has really helped me. It's low fat and only has 1 gram sugar. I've lost 35 lbs since surgery so it's working for me. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N900A using BariatricPal mobile app -

Protein Shake problem
Jerseygirl21 replied to Jerseygirl21's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thank you for your responses. The Orgain required two caps of the powder and it ended up like slush with our 4oz serving of water. It was not tasty!!! So even though the syntrax is a little too sweet for my liking I tried it again with water. Thankfully I was able to keep it in my system. Yay! Cheri have you tried almond milk? I am ok with the yogurt and cheese in this stage 2 diet. Trial and error and money lol! Let's hope this goes well because I need to keep the protein. -

LOL!!!!! I understand completely! I can't have food at all other than yogurt but the sf popsicles and the ff broth is a liquid which should be on your list. Double check with your pa on mon... I bet he/she will approve. Matter of fact, buy some broth and try that. Bet it takes your mind off of the meat... momentarily lol. I really like the Premier! The caramel is my fav! I also like the banana and strawberry. Don't like the vanilla and didn't try the choc. How many shakes are you on a day? 3 like me? -
Trip during purée - need food tips
A.Better.Me posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I will start purées July 20. On the 27, I will be taking a quick 3 day family trip about 5.5 hours from home. I will be able to pack a cooler but no freezer and no way to warm cold/frozen pre-prepped things. I'm going to be sick of shakes and yogurts (probably). Any suggestions for these days? I've read people getting soup at Panera. Any other "to-go" options? Thanks in advance!! -

Can you have souls too? Or change protein powders? I'm on Day 10 with 4 to go. The first week was the hardest. Now that I'm in the home stretch, I feel better about it. Helps to see the scale go down as the days pass too. For soups, we can have anything relatively low in sodium & either creamy or broth. Trader Joe's black bean soup & roasted red pepper soup are my favorites. Something warm makes me feel like I'm actually eating. Oh, & we can have SF jello, yogurt (with no fruity chunks, and SF pudding. Hope it gets easier for you! -
2 weeks post op and stalled!

Thank you for the encouragement. I too am surprised at how easy this is to get in my calories and if it weren't for MFP I'd probably be drinking more calories like from milk. I have been having some purees this week since liquid shakes go through my stomach so fast and I've been so hungry. I can eat 4 oz plain yogurt or cottage cheese easily and make myself eat slowly (10 minutes) I made very lean homemade chili and spaghetti sauce this week that I blended up smooth. My post op appointment is Tuesday so I'll ask him to look at my X-ray from when I was in the hospital to see if my stomach is normal sleeve sized. I just wanted this win today on the scale and I didn't get it. I know everybody experiences this, my fear is I won't be as successful as others. -
Chia & Hemp Seeds - Are they worth the hype?
Bariatric Surgery Nutrition posted a magazine article in Food & Nutrition
‘It’ foods are typically foods that many parts of the world have been eating for centuries but are only now being marketed in North America and other first-world countries. They are advertised as ‘good-for-you’ products with the promise of making you healthier and happier than you have ever been! Their marketing claims make you feel like you’ve been missing out and that you NEED to include this ‘perfect’ food in your diet every single day! As dietitians, we are ALWAYS skeptical of these types of promises. Many of our patients this year have been loading up on hemp and chia seeds to supplement their protein intake. Patients brag about sprinkling them on their oats, yogurts, scrambled eggs and even ice cream! While these seeds do boast some great qualities, they have been misrepresented as being high in protein. Yes you heard us right… hemp and chia seeds are NOT considered to be a good protein supplement. Let us explain… If you are struggling to meet your protein needs, a good protein supplement should add at least 6-15 grams of protein to your meal or snack. Additionally, you ideally want this protein source to have the least amount of calories possible. A good way to compare how much protein you are getting for the calories is to calculate the food’sprotein to calorie ratio (protein : calorie). Let's look at the protein to calorie ratios of some common protein supplements: What is this chart telling us? * For every 1 gram of protein from chia seeds there are 29 calories. ** For every 1 gram of whey isolate protein powder there are 5 calories. This means that whey isolate protein powder can give you the same amount of protein for much less calories. More precisely, it can provide the same 6 grams of protein for 1/6th of the calories compared to chia seeds! So does this mean I should stop using hemp and chia seeds? The short answer is no! Hemp and chia seeds do have many positive benefits (see below), however they should not be used to supplement the missing 20 grams of protein in your diet. WHY? Adding 20 grams of protein using chia seeds would mean adding a whopping 585 calories! With hemp seeds this would mean adding 320 calories, which is still quite a bit! Comparatively, adding 20 grams of protein using whey isolate protein powder would only mean adding 100 calories. See the difference? How should I be using hemp and chia seeds then? For those of you looking to boost your protein intake, hemp and chia seeds should not be your only source of added protein. We recommend using them in combination with other lower calorie protein supplements such as protein powders. Adding ½ or 1 serving of seeds per day (see serving sizes in chart above) for example is very appropriate, as hemp and chia seeds contain many important nutrients that are often not talked about. Hemp and chia seeds are… Good vegan/vegetarian source of protein. High in fiber. Make sure you choose whole hemp seeds (i.e. not shelled ones like hemp hearts) if you are looking for the fiber boost. In the early stages postop, adding 1-2 tbsps of these seeds into your smoothies is a great way to help fight constipation. High in several important micronutrients. Hemp seeds are excellent sources of iron, zinc, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus and vitamin E, while chia seeds are high in calcium, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, omega-3s and omega-6s. The bottom line: Healthy eating is not determined by one ‘superfood’ or seed. As always, the key is variety and moderation! - Lisa & Monica P.S. For those of you who are vegetarian or vegan, we recommend that you speak with your dietitian if you have questions about sources of protein. -
This is a bit difficult, since I followed my plan (so the plan told me what to add and when). Basically, try and keep to one type of consistency for a week at a time, and by time you are 8-9 weeks out, you'll add in everything. So, starting today, make sure everything is a runny puree consistency. Smooth, thin, will run off a spoon. Add liquid if things are too thick. (You can do tuna or beef in the blender if you want.. puree is about the texture, rather than what you are eating.) At 4 weeks, you move to thick and smooth. Like greek yogurt. Will stand up on a spoon, but still no chunks. At 5 weeks, you move to soft chunks (like unblended split pea soup). You'll need to chew a bit, but everything should turn to mush in your mouth. At 6-8 weeks, you move gradually into firmer and firmer foods. Raw veggies are one of the last things you add.. especially raw carrots, cucumbers with peels, etc. It might take longer than 8 weeks to bring some of that back in. I knew it was ok to advance to the next stage when I could eat the current stage relatively quickly and without discomfort. Anytime you try out a new food, just take a small bite, chew it well, swallow, and wait to see if everything is ok, before taking the next bite. Your tummy will tell you when it doesn't like things. If you overdo, and end up vomiting, go back to liquids for a day to rest your tummy. Wait at least a week before reintroducing something that didn't agree with you.

How much are you able to eat?
Guest replied to Carol94303's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm starting my 8th week and I can eat 3-4 oz protein. Or I can eat 6 oz Okios yogurt or about 5 oz of cottage cheese. -
Yogurt question
Diana_in_Philly replied to char3672's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Try Oikos Triple Zero Yogurt. 15 g protein and 0 carbs and sugar. I, personally, like the coconut creme and orange creme. The Peach is tasty, too. -
In my opinion, 6 days is too soon. Docs all have their own plans, but mine did things slowly and it worked great for me. 3rd week everything was purees; like yogurt, split pea soup, mashed potatoes and the like (for consistency). Week one was clear liquids. Week 2 was full liquids.. So the purees opened up a new world One thing that you shouldn't overlook is the idea of taking things slowly, and don't hesitate to revert back to the easier foods. If yogurt is working, great! I found my tastes had changed so much that I could tolerate plain yogurt, no sweetener needed. YMMV

Yogurt question
Navigating the Wilderness replied to char3672's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Protein is the most important thing right now next to water. If the yogurt you listed is truly the only thing you can tolerate right now, then do it just to get some protein in. Just know you should transition to healthier option as soon as possible. -
My rule of thumb with yogurt was a 1 to 1 ratio, protein to carbs. So it sounds like yours is pretty good. The first month (to me) is about healing, not weight loss, so do what you need to. When you are on solid foods, it will be much easier to transition to higher protein/lower carb choices.
-
I'd say if that's all you can tolerate its better than nothing. Try a few different kinds. The ones that I liked before surgery don't taste the same to me now. I did find I like the desert flavors like strawberry cheesecake but with teenage girls in the hose its hard to keep in the house. I bought vanilla Greek yogurt and its good and not too sweet and Greek yogurt is supposed to be higher in protein. But I just went to the store and bought several different ones and tried them.

Hi. I am 3.5 weeks out, and I have been having alot of problems eating and drinking. I was put on meats, cheese, soft veggies...pretty much anything since day 6. I think it was too early. I have been nauseaus and not wanting food (or drinks) I was taken off shakes (which I can't get down anyway) and yogurt. My question is, i know that we are supposed to eat yogurt with more protein than sugar, but since I'm having so much trouble, would it hurt to eat one that has 13g sugar and 11g protein? Even if just until I can eat better? Sent from my SM-G930T using BariatricPal mobile app

2 weeks post op- eating little, hard to get protein
hmills653 replied to AZBlackhawk's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I'm 5 wks out and still not able to meet fluid or protein goals yet. I'm getting around 32 oz fluid. The problem is I get full when I eat and stay full so its hard to eat every couple hrs. I try to focus on goods with protein such as eggs, yogurt, cheese, protein shakes as tolerated. -
2 weeks post op- eating little, hard to get protein
Meryline replied to AZBlackhawk's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
@James Marusek I have been getting my protein in with food for a while now, and I track everything. My protein goal is only 60g a day, but I'm often over 80g or more. But, my meals are basically only protein. It is possible. There has been a lot of yogurt eaten, that's for sure. And the one I have has 11g pr 100g. My program has had me on solids since day 4 though. I used protein shakes in the beginning, but not after week 3-4. 6 small meals a day it was. Down to 4-5 now. I eat max 5 oz a meal, which has been allowed since I first started. You don't have to drink protein shakes if you meet your protein goal for the day with food, but reaching it, is your second priority, first is water.
