  1. My lunch. Black bean taco with fat free sour cream, lettuce, cabbage, hot sauce, red onions on a flour tortilla. 151 calories, total weight 158 grams. Ate it all. It was yummy.
  2. Hi, Everyone - I've seen a few posts about how many calories people have been eating to maintain their goal weight but none about how much they have to eat to lose weight and was curious, as my surgeon never gave me a target caloric intake (I had my procedure in 2014). He just told me to eat 80-100 grams of protein a day and to focus on avoiding refined carbs. I was also wondering if the target caloric intake people are talking about is total consumption or absorbed amount. (For example, they eat/consume 2000 calories a day but only absorb 1200 of those consumed calories so their target is 1200 absorbed calories?) Thanks in advance for the insight!!!

    No weight loss

Keep doing what your doing. Are your clothes feeling different? Take pictures this will help see the change. I was at a 9 week stall. Then I dropped a significant amount of weight. Which will happen a time and again.

    PCOS

all of these posts are giving me some hope! i'm 40 and was diagnosed with pcos when i was 15. i've only gotten to a bmi of 39 and am told i have very few follicles (i'm currently in the process of freezing my eggs). i am trying my best to lose more weight rapidly to improve my chances of having at least one baby! any advice would be much appreciated! i'd also love to hear more success stories!

    Babies over 40?

Hi, friends! I am freezing my eggs now at age 40 and came across this post. I was hoping to resurrect the conversation. I have been deemed virtually infertile -- only 4 follicles in total (1 on my left ovary and 3 on m right). i'm on a high dose of FSH meds to try to stimulate follicle growth and the one ovary with only 1 follicle is doing nothing. the other 3 are growing along but slowly. my team said that having children over 40 + pcos since I was a teenager (in spite of completely normal periods now) + having a high bmi still (super happy to have a bmi of 39 instead of 59 but still not healthy!) is all working against me. they recommended losing weight as safely and as rapidly as possible while also doing subsequent cycles (since my insurance covers a few and i'm also up against my biological clock -- i'll be 41 in feb). any advice/tips/recommendations? anyone else been through this?

1 year out DS and going crazy

I am in a similar boat with very little family support as my siblings live in another state, I'm not married, and my parents have passed away. I'm also trying to navigate dating apps, pcos, and infertility at the same time and living in a new town! (I'm about an hour south of you!) I lost 50% of my excess weight and did nothing about losing the rest for years (til now) so I have essentially been plateaued for 7 years but didn't watch what I ate or restrict myself further to lose more weight. I just tried to stick with healthy eating for the most part and was able to maintain. We have got this though! We know what we need to do and just need to keep chipping away at this bit by bit, day by day!
  7. Ok, so here is a different kind of Before and After. Been having Body Fat Percentage on the brain after a short discussion of it on the Food B&A thread. I’m 5’2”, 118.8 lbs this morning, down from 235 lbs 4 years ago. Picture on the left is me 2 years ago (Summer, 2020), when i was working out regularly and eating pretty low-carb. I was probably 115 (or less) at the time, body fat percentage 13-18%. Picture in the right is me today (118.8 lbs), wearing the same shirt and bra, but not the weight belt that i was wearing in the 2020 pic (which is why my waist looks tiny in that pic). Body fat estimated at 29%. I def do like better how my bod looked a couple years ago, but not soooo much that im willing to put in the effort to get back there, ha! So lesson(s) for the day are: 1. number on the scale is NOT the only factor that determines “health” or fitness level. 2. Sometimes u need to weigh a particular goal with the effort required to achieve/maintain it and decide if its for you. 3. Getting to and staying at a particular fitness level takes effort. Regular, and consistent, effort. I am in awe and admiration of those who can get and STAY fit. It’s hard, man!

  10. Hi I have some questions I'm two months out surgery from what my home scale is saying I'm down to 219 my original weight was 290 but before surgery was 274 however I wanted to know if I should be concerned I haven't taken my vitamins in about a month and I don't eat I would eat a sugar free fruit cup on a good day and drink liquid I want to know if this is normal and last time I went to the hospital they said mypotassium was low. I have so many questions so I wondered if anyone experienced this before

    Gastric Sleevr Vs. Bypass

Way to go!!!! I just checked (literally never know lol 😂) and I’m 21.5 bmi. My doc actually would be ok with me gaining a few pounds because my caloric intake tends to be low. I have ZERO regrets from the sleeve!!

    Food log?

I use Baritastic and agree with another poster that since it is designed for toward bariatric patients it works very well for my needs, tracking important markers like protein, calcium, water, carbs, fat. It is very easy to scan the barcodes of different foods like protein shakes, applesauce, tomato soup, yogurt, etc. and keeps track of your weight lost before and since surgery, as well as inches lost. There's a section for daily notes, reminders, a timer for eating (20 minutes to chew, chew, chew!), drinking (there are two warnings for drinking: don't eat yet! and don't drink yet!). So, the way it is tailored for bariatric patients is what makes this app so great. Good luck with whatever you choose to use, I am sure they are all great!

You're doing great! I've heard to stay off the scale for at least 5 weeks. Your body is freaking out right now and trying to find stability. Your weight is going to be going crazy. I've heard that hunger often continues until you're on solid foods. Once you start solids, you'll start feeling restriction. This video might help with the portion sizes.
  14. Edited to add: sorry, am realizing this post should probably be put in a more appropriate thread. But im too lazy to move it, ha! ———————— Yep. so the first time i got my body fat measures via scan, it was 38%. But this was already 3+ months in, and 70 lbs lost. So i would guess I was probably 50-55% body fat pre-wls given my body measurements at the time. Yikes. After weight loss, at around 1.5 years post, dexa clocked me at 15% (at 115 lbs) My most recent one was Jan of this year and i was at 23% (at 118 lbs that day) My home body scale, while varying wildly day to day, generally reflected these numbers when taken as an average over the time period. Sooooo, if i can count on the averages of my home scale, as of this morning, I’ve averaged 29% body fat reading for the past 30 days. I am 118.8 this morning. Now i still think calling me skinny fat is a stretch since technically im still in the healthy body fat percentage for my stats, i am definitely much less fit than i was before (I’ve basically doubled my body fat percentage over past 2+ years.) With all that said (which was alot, sorry!), i am content enough with my appearance and lifestyle that i have little interest in doing anything drastic to change it. I’m just not very keen on other people unsolicitedly pointing out their precieved deficiencies of my body. But i mean, who does??? P.S. btw, there ARE physical benefits of a higher body fat percentage: my face is less gaunt and my boobs are bigger. Win!

    Food log?

I use https://www.baritastic.com/ I used MFP for years and I didn't like how it was tailored for lower calorie intakes/wls patients. https://www.baritastic.com/ is geared solely towards weight loss surgery patients, so I feel like it's more user friendly for me.

Don't feel discouraged. You're doing just fine. Fluctuating 2-even 5 lbs a day is normal at any weight. This has to do with water weight, food etc. It's best to weigh yourself first thing in the morning, before food or drink and most importantly only ONCE per week. You're still healing. This was a big surgery. But most of all, Youre on track! Have you ever lost 8 to 10 lbs in one week before this? be proud! If you obsess over the scale it will mess with your head. Do not compare any if your progress to other people, our journeys are different right down to our surgeon guidelines and food phases. For portion sizes, your body will tell you if youre pushing yourself too much. Start small and work your way up. Less is more right now, protein shakes are incredibly important to not lose muscle mass.

    Food Before and After Photos

It doesn't have to do with what the person eats. "Skinny fat" means that a person carries too much body fat in relation to lean mass despite being a normal weight.

    Gastric bypass surgery

Some do more than 4 weeks some less. I needed to do it for two weeks. The time needed also depends on an number of factors. The surgeon may have requirement to do a certain amount of time due to a starting weight and or getting the patient to show commitment to the process. Their primary reason for anybody to do the diet is to shrink the liver so that makes the surgical field easier to access. Asking the surgeon their reasoning. Hope it all goes well for you.

    Gastric bypass surgery

Typically we only see 4 weeks for people with a lot more weight to lose. Don't know what your specs are since you have not added them, but people with a BMI in the 50's or 60's will sometimes have a 3 or 4 week pre-op diet. If that's you, it's to make the surgery as safe as they can.

    Did I eat too much?

You won't permanently stretch out your pouch over one meal. It takes overeating repeatedly over time. Also keep in mind that ounces of protein is a measurement of their weight, not volume. While 4 ounces of most meats will be about the same size, the 4 ounce rule doesn't apply to other things. The only thing where we generally use ounces as a volume measurement is liquid ounces.

    what surprised you?

I just had surgery last week, and just found this app… I was surprised how little pain I felt, but I was also surprised how tired I was post surgery. I actually slept from surgery until late afternoon the following day. But once I woke up I felt great, but I wear out quickly. My doctor said the weight loss will help me feel more energized.

    Gastric Sleevr Vs. Bypass

Hey this popped up in my feed too, I remember this thread! At the time I was only a few months post op. I’m coming up on two years here, I lost 181 lbs. I weighed in at 153 this morning, so for my height of 5’10 I’m now at a 22 BMI. So at the end of the day I did in fact lose more than 100% of my excess weight, I did not start magically regaining weight at 18 months post op, and all this with a sleeve surgery. Who would have imagined.
  23. I felt trapped in my body. We went to Lake Placid NY this summer, and my family wanted to do hiking/kayaking/etc but I struggled to make the 5 steps up to the condo. I was worried and embarrassed that the seat belts on the plane barely fit. The seat belt fastener on my car kept digging into my hips. Just maneuvering around was more difficult. I knew I was obese, but I would never allow pictures of me, because in pictures I could see how big I really was. I had thought about wls previously but always considered it "the easy way out". Figured if I had the willpower and determination then I could do it on my own. I had gotten down from 235ish to 194 about 3 years ago, but I got off track and gained it back all the way up to 259 lbs. After the NY trip, I started on my wls journey. I just had the gastric sleeve on Oct 11 (so just a few days post op). I'm still in the "what did I do phase" somewhat courtesy of these blasted stomach cramps, but I am excited for the journey to come.
  24. I have had two knee replacements and one of them was a horrible mess from the start. I'd like to not have to have revisions as long as possible. I am so close to diabetic, but I have fought to not take any medications for 12 years after my messed up knee replacement. I am on medication for high blood pressure, my cholesterol is high, my hips are hurting and I just want to be able to move better without as much pain and live a very long happy life with my husband and our fur-kids. I have tried everything out there and loose weight, but it comes right back on when I try to eat real foods.
  25. Well I am currently on the last trimester of my pregnancy. We are to be having a scheduled c-section due to previous c-sections I have had with my previous babies. Everything has looked good with baby's health as well as mine. Baby is about 3lbs as of now. We have about 8 more weeks left. Weight gain has been a total of 4 lbs. Nothing else new, just keep getting my protein in daily, drinking lots of water, and taking my vitamins. One pregnancy symptom that is horrible is heartburn. I have it soooo bad every day as well as leg cramps. LilaNicole congrats again and I'm so excited for your bundle of joy.
