  1. Hey everyone I was sleeved 6 January 2015 here are some pictures of my progress im having a problem with constipation bad I've taken all the recommended stuff for it does anyone else have this problem i think its slowing down my weight loss surgery date weight 221 weight as of today 179 march 21 2015
  2. For my six month weight loss trial it had to have my weight documented, as well as what exercises I have been doing and discussion about what I will to different to work on my weight loss the next month. I had gained weight one month after a taking a stretch of steroids for an injury, so there had to be additional discussion on why I gained weight and what I will do to not only lose the weight I put on but additional weight as well. The weight loss physician wrote the letter of medical necessity for my insurance company.
  3. My program gave me this formula, to help ME determine what my loss needs to be in the different phases to get me where I want to be. In the first 3 months, you lose x amount of weight. In the following 3 months, you'll generally lose 1/2 of whatever number x is, which is then number y. And then in the following months, you can lose 1/2 of y, for as long as you chose to eat/exercise in a way that puts you in weight loss mode, for number z. I want to lose about 110 lbs. My goal is 50 lbs in the first 3 months, so x = 50. I'll lose half of x in the 2nd 3 months, so y is 25. Then in the subsequent months, I can continue to lose 1/2 of y monthly, so z is 12. x + y + (as many months of z as I chose) will get me to my desired loss...50 +25 + (12 x3) = 111. I could be at my goal in 9 months if I work hard and stick to my plan. I've lost 45 lbs in 9 weeks, so I'm on track for that first goal. It really helped me to have interim goals and to have some sort of expectation of weight loss. Of course, this could all go out the window if I don't continue to lose as I have, but I have no reason to think that I'll be anything but successful as long as I continue doing what I've been doing. Good luck!

    Made the bmi but now.....

First off, I'm so sorry for your losses. I work in cancer research and I know the trials that families go through, especially if it is a long, drawn-out process. I lost my mom in 2015 from a heart attack, and in a strange way I'm thankful she passed quickly and that's something I don't think I'd say unless I worked in the field I do... I have had depression from a very young age, and I had to explain to the psychologist how my last major depressive episode was 2015 after my mom died (complicated relationship), and I was also planning my wedding, which was also super stressful. She asked me if I thought my feelings about my mom were regular grief or true depression, and I think it's important to know where the grief ends and the depression takes over. My own med history says I was on prozac, zoloft, paxil, celexa, and wellbutrin for my depression, not all at the same time of course (age ~15 - 22ish). I have depression and bipolar and alcoholism on every branch of my family tree, so I was careful to explain the situations I was under while taking these meds, and how I handle it now. If you show your resilience and that your coping mechanisms are healthy ones, they should clear you. The fact you are seeking help and are on a stable dose of antidepressants shows you take initiative to properly help yourself, instead of self-medicating with food of alcohol, for example. Best of luck!

    Cookies!

I definitely wouldn't handle it by eating cookies. That is going to sabotage your weight loss efforts. Try the SF popcycles or pudding and see if that will help curb your cravings. How about greek yogurt? This is where you are going to have to buckle down and really use your willpower. That's the things about WLS, a chocolate chip cookie still smells and tastes like a chocolate chip cookie. We have to find ways to resist the urge. Good luck
  6. This is a big decision. It's great that you are asking these questions. I'm a long-term lap band patient. Here are 2 articles that may help you. They are part of my 5 year lap band journey. The first is about eating with friends and family -it's an article and video. The second deals with hunger and all my failed attempts at weight loss - I call it Hungry No More. My biggest question was would I be HUNGRY, which is something I struggled with all my life. I hope some of this helps. Let me know if you have any questions.
  7. I agree with a lot of people here, I remember someone had mentioned this to a stranger, and turns out that "stranger" who was morbidly obese HAD ALREADY HAD THE BYPASS, years ago and had regained weight so you never know what is going on with someone, and you never know what your future will hold with your lap band. Also every obese person DO NOT WANT WLS, some people are not candidates for medical reasons, some people can't afford it, don't have insurance, etc. Also, OBESE PEOPLE KNOW THEY ARE FAT, no one has to tell them that, food can be a horrible addiction like drugs, and when people tell them to lose weight, sometimes the opposite can happen and they turn to food, from being hurt. Also there are MANY obese people that lose weight successfully without weight loss surgery and keep it off, and yes it can be done. I've known many that have successfully lost weight the good ole fashion way and have kept it off for many years, they changed their lifestyle joined weight watchers and exercise daily. So you can't get cocky just because you have a tool that is making it difficult for you to eat and judge others or look down on other obese people because they have not decided to do what you are doing. I agree with most here, never mention it UNLESS they ask, "hey how are you losing your weight? Then perhaps they will get inspired by your weight loss with your band, and then they can decide if the lap band is a viable option for them. Edited to Add: Also most people have a "breaking point" when they've had enough and want to do something drastic...perhaps these friends just not have reached that breaking point. A lot of people get weight loss surgery for the wrong reasons, for vanity, spouse leaves them, etc....perhaps their health is not at a critical point yet.

WLS Cookbook - Low Fat High Protein

I'm a recipe junkie also. I have this book. It's great !!! It breaks it down by WLS patients nutrition and tells how much to have during the different stages that we go through. My surgeons office also recommended it. The 'Before and After : Living and Eating Well After Weight Loss Surgery' also has wonderful recipes in it. I made the chicken caccitore last night, and even my pickiest eater ate it. I made rice for him to go with it.

    Newbie from MA

I too am from Western Ma. I had my surgery done at Baystate. I've been doing very well with my weight loss. My biggest problem was I could not keep it off once I lost weight and then I would gain even more than I lost! But with the band I don't have to worry about that. It just won't let me eat the way I used too. Alot of it now is in my head. I have to remember that I can't eat a plate full of anything. I still crave foods I know I can't have, ie: bread, burgers, some meats. But I just remind myself how luck I am to be banded. Best of luck on your journey!

    Newbie from MA

Thanks Sue and might I say 114! How awesome is that. In a year? I mean even now WITH exercise I couldnt hope to get near that! Trust me Ive tried! Im a big fan of Turbo Jam but I recently gained 15 MORE pounds (Im planning my wedding can you say stress!) and Im finding moving to be so difficult, never mind those forward push kick combos. As for gall stones. I went into the doctor at one point with side pain...and he thought they were gall stones, which is the only reason he was considering the surgery for me in the first place, but he made me want to try a trillion other things first. Weve since discovered or I should say he decided that the pain isnt gall stones and Ive decided to look for weight loss help without him haha. I hear that waiting for surgery thing till you can totally chill and take it easy. Please keep me posted on it. Maybe Ill even mail you a card Im in the Western MA area. the weight clinic Im going through is at Mercy medical.

    Carlas journey

So I was banded Nov 3, 08. The first four weeks after surgery were not so bad I guess I had a lot of inflammtion due to also having a huge hiatal hernia repaired with mesh. After that though I thought I would starve to death. I had a four cc fill six weeks after surgery and I still feel like I'm eating more than I should be able to. I have only been sick once and that was new yrs eve after eating a shrimp and scallops both pretty dry. To date my weight loss is 31 pounds,an average day for me is breakfast- egg beater 1/4 cup, sometimes on the weekend I'll also have 1/4 to 1/2 cup fried potatoes, lunch-2-3oz chicken with 1/2 cup cottage cheese or a small salad, dinner- 2-4 oz meat, chicken or fish. veggies 1/2 cup 2 tbs to 1/2 cup potates or pasta. If I have a snack it is usually low cal popcorn occas. one hershys kiss, or 1/2 cup oatmeal or a protein drink. Anyone who has more experience with this Please tell me am I overeating not losing as much as I should be I'm terrified I will fail at this like every other time I"ve dieted.

    Best fiber to take????

Hi! Protein is what will keep you feeling full the longest. How close are you to getting 60 grams a day? This web site was recommended as a good way to track what you are eating so you can be sure to get it all in. Click here: FitDay - Free Weight Loss and Diet Journal Also, it is not uncommon for the first fill to not last very long. I was told it is often absorbed in part and to view it as "priming the pump" for future fills. As far as fiber goes, (your original question! ) I have joined the ranks of those who follow the ways of Tired Old Man and worship at the holy altar of Shredded Wheat. Best Wishes, Jo Ann
  13. Thanks, I meet with 2 dr and on office staff, The Dr. I decided to go with was one that later my Band Dr. said was the one he would recommend and did a lot of work with Weight Loss People. He also did one of the biggest looser winners. I have another meeting with him and will bring my wife this time to make sure she is on board. I have a date in November which works best for our scheduled in fact on my birthday. Would like to loose another 10 or 15 lbs by than. I am down 60 lbs from my band and about 100 from my highest. He plans to do some lypo also and also reduce the pubic area which has lot of fat. Cost is $11,000 which includes the garments and all follow up etc. Was not as bad as I thought. He gave me prices for tummy tuck also but really did not think I would be happy as one of the areas that bothers me is my flanks which are not really addressed in a tummy tuck. I due question if this is just vanity as I am 50and have been fat most of my life. Glad to hear you are doing welll. And the price in Mexico certainly seems attractive. Please keep me advised of your progress

Do you tell your PCP ?

I was afraid to tell my PCP I was planing on having VSG surgery in Mexico, but I though it was important for him to know. I made an appointment with him afraid of what reaction he might have, and if maybe I would have to start looking for a new PCP. I was very nervous ( I don't know why), but when I told him he was very supportive. He asked me if I was using a local surgeon. I explained to him my insurance does not cover any kind of weight loss surgery and I was going to Mexico. I gave him the name of the DR, and informed him that I have researched the physician and procedure. He said he would follow up with me after surgery, and I will have a complete physical before surgery, which I just scheduled for Jan 7 2014. I also informed him that my surgeon will give me a report of my procedure and copy of all my test to take to him. Don't be afraid to talk to your PCP, he or she should be on your side if not maybe you should find another one,

    Tears of Frustration....

This is what happened to me. Had surgery on Nov 19th. 6 days later, went to a walk in clinic because of shoulder pain. They sent me for a CT scan and did blood work. Blood work came back positive for clots, CT scan came back positive for Fluid on lungs. Told me to get to ER. While at ER, had an abnormal EKG and elevated tryponen levels. They told me I had a heart attack. No clot, but they ended up doing an angio and found a 70% blockage( btw, I passed the stress test). They were so close to putting in a stent, but my surgeon said NO way. I cant be on Plavix yet, it would be torture on my stomach. So, now its a waiting game. I wait 6-8 weeks to see if I can have the stent. Had another EKG today, still abnormal. This has been an ordeal. I don't mean to be a Debbie downer..but cardiac caths do save lives...my boyfriend had one and it detected major blockage..they did a stent and hee is with me because of it..Now from the perspective of your weight loss journey..finding out about heart disease beforehand is a good thing. You would not want to undergo this major surgery, lose all of the weight you want to lose.....just to wake up one day and have a full blown heart attack. ( heart disease is not synonymous to being heavy) NOW , Im not saying don't get a second opinion..just don't let your desire to have this surgery ( which is just one part of your desire to regain your health) over take the need to make sure your health is at it's optimal best leading into it. I wish you the best of success with ALL things related to your goal to lose weight & become your healthy best self... Do a whoo-sahhh and take a deep breath and tackle this and then you will be on your way to getting sleeved.

    Realistic Expectations

Health Improvements The best news is that you don’t have to get back to a “normal weight” to achieve incredible health benefits after bariatric surgery. The average bariatric surgery patient sees a dramatic reduction in the number of medications they need to take to control their obesity-related medical problems and a significant improvement in their quality of life even if their final body mass index is still in the “overweight” or “obese” range. In fact, I find in my own practice that if a patient tries to force their weight down to what would be considered “normal,” many times they don’t feel very good and often times don’t look very healthy (that Skeletor look!). I always encourage patients to focus on getting back to a “better” weight for them, not necessarily what society considers a “normal” weight. In summary, some bariatric surgery patients will achieve a “normal” weight but most will not. If you don’t reach a “normal” weight, well, that just makes you normal! Answer provided by: Lloyd Stegemann, MD, FASMBS, is a private practice bariatric surgeon in Corpus Christi, TX. He is the driving force behind the Texas Weight-loss Surgery Summit and the formation of the Texas Association of Bariatric Surgeons. Dr. Stegemann is a member of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, OAC National Board of Directors, Co-chair of the Convention Program Agenda Subcommittee and is Chair of the OAC Sponsored Membership Program.

    Goal weight

When I first started, my goal was about 185, which was a reasonable expectation based on surgeon's averages. Then, as I started losing, and the weight was just falling off and I saw others achieve a normal BMI, I changed it to 145. Then, as time went on and the weight stopped coming off, no matter what I did, I changed it to 155. I have never actually hit that number, and at three years out it's a lofty goal in the back of my mind. Now my real goal is to maintain my loss. The number on the scale still matters to me, but less than it used to. I am a smallish, normal sized woman, and thanks to plastics, I don't look like I've ever been overweight. That's success beyond my wildest dreams. That's a long answer to say you may have to be flexible.

    plateau/Stall

Embrace the stall. I had one at about 3 weeks. At 2 months tomorrow my weight loss seems to be speeding up even though I am eating more. My body surprised me by dropping a few more pounds this week. My surgery was only 3/9, and I am down about 40 pounds including the 7 day pre op diet. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Psychological Issues.......

You know I feel the same way you do. I didn't realize it until just lately, that people are more helpful, smiling, hold the door open also. I must have been in my own world, never the notice how people were towards me. I didn't care before what people thought of me. I always dressed nice, did my hair and wore make-up. But noe I have started to notice a difference in people. I still need to loose 100 pounds to reach my goal. I'm now after one year haveing some problems with my band, Thursday I had to have my band unfilled, my band has slipped a little and need to wait four weeks, then recheck my band before going foward again. I don't have any great advice, just look foward and keep up the good work. :hand::biggrin::wink2:
  21. This happens to a lot of us. I'm going through it too. I'm just trying to focus on healing and feeling better. The weight loss will come! Hang in there!!

    Who Have You Told?

I didn't tell anyone before either except family members.... Now I tell anyone who listens... I'm proud of my success!!! I used to be one of those judgemental people that thought weight loss surgery was for lazy people... It is a tool and way harder then I thought it would be.... Tell them To suck it and be proud of your decision and how good you are going to look and feel

    Who Have You Told?

So far, only my family, fiance, and his family know. I will most likely tell my classmates/co-workers as the surgery draws near though. In my opinion, I think it's important to be open about it in order to lessen the stigma associated with weight loss surgery and being overweight in general. The more people are educated, usually the more accepting they become. I don't feel a point in being secretive about it...I feel proud that I'm making my health a priority.
