    Dating after the sleeve

After being single for more than 30 years, I've finally found a lady that likes hanging out with me. I haven't told her anything beyond the fact that I've lost a lot of weight and I have to limit how much of certain foods I eat. I've told her that I can't eat a whole bunch of anything if I want to keep the weight off. That seems to be enough info to share with her for now. When we go out, I told her right from the start that I would not be eating much and I was going out, not to eat, but to hang out with her and enjoy her conversation and company. But if you are going to be dating later in the year, that means you'll be further along in the healing process and will probably be able to eat much more than you can now. At 6 months, I was up to eating 1 cup of food per meal. I know that's isn't much, but it's more than 4 bites. As far as scars go, I'm going to try to make a joke of it by telling her that the big scar is where the alien popped out. If she laughs at that, then I'll feel comfortable telling her the rest of the story. But seriously, 4 out of 5 scars I have are faded and look like big freckles. The 5th one is very faded and in low light, very difficult to notice.

    Gall Bladder Gone Bad

Thanks for all of the great replies! @Serendipity: Wow! That sounds like it was a horrible experience! I hope you haven't had any troubles since! I hope that if this continues, they won't make me wait to address it! I would rather have it out and move on with my weight loss! Thanks again!
  3. I just started my pre-op diet this past Monday, and my surgery is scheduled for 8/9. I'm really looking forward to it, let me tell ya! My pre-op diet is still pretty rough. My doc has me on a 1000 calorie per day milkshake diet, with only sugerfree juices and jello outside of that. First 3 days were hell, and now it's merely excruciating =P. Can't complain, I guess -- I've lost 20 pounds already, though it's certainly just water weight. Anyhow, nice to meet you all -- I look forward to sharing this adventure with you.

125 Loss Since Surgury June 5Th

Congrats on your weight loss!! I hope I can see some results like that! Still pre-op here, but I've read a lot about how your hormones fluctuate while you are losing weight. Some people experience issues with their short term memory, some have a hard time concentrating, and other get depressed. It's totally normal and should hopefully balance itself out when you lose the weight. It's worth discussing with your doctor. A therapist could help with all the stress in your life and the changes going on because of surgery/weight loss, and your MD might put you on a mild anti-depressant. I'd take advantage of both, if you can. But if you can't do counseling or aren't interested, I think a mild anti-depressant for a short term use is your best bet. Meds don't make the problem go away, but it does help with the emotions. In the meantime, try to spend time with people who make you happy. And the boards are here to lend an ear, and you're welcome to PM me if you need someone to talk to. It will get better. It's up to you if you want to wait it out or get help. Good luck, focus on taking care of you right now.
  5. Thanx guys, and wow momma of 4, you are doing great, did you think you would lose so much weight so fast??? You must be so excited!!! Good luck Dansha, everything will go great!!!!

    Medical History

wow... that's actually what i am waiting on now.. They told me they were looking for records at least 1 from each year showing what my weight was. now I have the records from 2001,2002,2003,2004,2005,2006 they really dont care what you went in for just to show what your weight was.. Can you think about any where you might have gone that would have charted your weight at all?
  7. So I have been denied by Aetna and exhausted my appeals. My weight wasn't high enough for the last 2 years and I have no comorbidities. So at the very least I figure I can be miserable for 18 more months (I hit 40 BMI 6 months ago) and then reapply. But quite interestingly, my BP has shot way up. Like really bad high. If my Dr. says I now have high BP can I go ahead and reapply?

Not loosing like I thought I would

Our starting stats are similar. I also CrossFit, and swim. I lose about 5 pounds per month at this point, punctuated by longish stalls. In February I increased my calories to 1200 per day and I eat up to that when I have a big workout. It knocked me out of a longer stall at that point. Even though my weight loss is not what some would consider impressive (which, incidentally, doesn't bother me overmuch because comparisons are kind of pointless) I have also been keeping track of my measurements. I was a tight 16W or 18 when this started, and I am wearing a 12 or a loose 14 now. The difference is becoming quite noticeable. I'd keep at it. I think we all have little catchphrases like "I didn't get this surgery to…" but the fact is, you got the surgery to turn your life and health around. It's a long term game, not a short term one. You're doing the right things and the weight will follow. Maybe not at the rate you want it to, but it will.

Not loosing like I thought I would

I am 8 weeks out, surgery was 1/22/14. I haven't lost a lot of weight. I was 235 before pre-op diet and 220 on surgery date. I weighed in two days ago at my surgeons office at 209. He was surprised. Asked me if I eat sugar. Which I don't. But I did struggle in the first few weeks with food. I ate soups that were higher in calories just to get through the puréed and soft food stage. I add syntrax to my water and drink a protein shake in the morning. I take my vitamins every day. So at 7 weeks I am able to eat more dense protein and vegetables. I just started being able to eat what I need to and ignoring the other foods. I was happy it was all coming together. I weighed 214 at my primary doctor's on March 18 and 209 at the surgeons march 27th. But after meeting with my surgeon I was discouraged. I have lost inches. My neck is smaller and my old clothes are fitting. But looking at everyone's numbers after surgery and 8 weeks out I definitely feel like a slow Loser. It has been hard work so far. I'm not going to give up. There is some science to all this right? I'm working on adding more water and fiber.:/

  11. You might be pleasently surprised after your surgery to find that there were hormonal factors driving your food addiction and they are largely corrected by the removal of the portion of your stomach that secrets gherlin. Many of us have very little interest in food post surgery and find our appetite and food cravings have dropped way back. The more behavorial changes you can make prior to surgery, the easier the time you will have dealing with your new eating habits. My new addiction is for physical activity.I keep exploring new forms of exercise. When I am angry or upset, good vigorous exercise seems to be a better "cure" than food. I am like a kid in a candy store when it comes to exploring what I can now do phyisically that I couldn't before. How often are you exercising? See if your team will help you develop an exercise routine pre-surgery. Mine had me exercise 4 times a week. I already did the eliptical and strength training but they had me add swimming 2X a week. It was a huge challenge, but now I am skiing, snowshoeing, training for a 5k and just signed up for an unlimited 2 weeks of yoga. Focus on your non-weight loss goals for post surgery. Shop in regular size departments, travel on a bus or plane and be able to fit in a seat. Focus on what you are giving yourself and others by the gift of a second chance on your health, rather than on what you are giving up.
  12. Hello all! I am still going through the pre-op processing. Had my first NUT appt. last weekend and have a psych eval in 2 weeks. Yesterday in my research I dared to venture on the long term results of WLS. Read much about how after 2 years it becomes really hard for food addicts like myself. I was very discouraged. Started thinking why would anyone put their body through such a major surgery to just go back to the same old weight and problems? Then I remembered that I am a Project Manager by profession, and pretty darn good at my job! I go into each project with all my research and all the risk awareness and then I create a risk mitigation plan. lol. So, here are things I cannot change: I am a food addict. Sleeve is just a tool and will not help me if I am not willing to let it help me. I will still love food and will probably feel miserable to be separated from my first love. I may have emotional issues and challenges along the way But here are the things I can change: Take control! After all it's my life! Start making changes now instead of waiting for after surgery - Eat slower, Exercise Continue reaching out to all my fellow sleevers for support Start getting psychological help to deal with my food addiction. So, today, I ate a half a sandwich and 6 cubes of tofu in 45 minutes. Magic happened! I was full! I did not gorge the food down. I also plan to exercise this evening. I can do this! We all can! We just have to know the devil and have a plan to defeat it!

    I don't get it. :(

  14. Hi everyone. My name is Margaret. I am a mother, wife, friend, employee advocate, and a lover of dogs. I live with my husband and Chug (Chihuahua/pug) in Colorado. I just had my revision surgery on June 30th from lap band to sleeve. I am at Bariatric Stage IV - eating pureed foods and drinking Protein drinks. I am limited to five foods: egg whites, plain yogurt, refried Beans, cottage cheese and pudding. I am also taking liquid Vitamins and getting B-12 monthly injections. My daily goals are to continue to drink 64 oz of Fluid each day; eat/drink 65 grams of protein, walk 30 minutes (if not more), and continue to protect my surgery incisions and stomach by not lifting, pulling, pushing anything over 15 lbs.I am glad that the doctor limits his patients to five foods because I think it's really easy at this point to overdue it on other soft foods that may not be so healthy for you. The weight is coming off slowly which I think is good. I feel pretty good except last night, I had a side ache next to the incision where my port use to be. Other than that, I feel really good. I think this surgery was much easier than the lap band. I still get hungry and the food that my husband is eating looks tempting. However, I try to remind myself that this is just head hunger. I don't think I am really hungry. I am no longer a coffee drinker since we were told to stop drinking it. I was totally addicted to coffee mostly because of the liquid creamers. I feel so much better and I no longer have to have coffee first thing in the morning I am just beginning this journey and I am still learning to listen to my body. I am not in a support group at this time but I would love to connect with others who are on a similar journey.
  15. People have choices. There are stories of both gastric bypass and lap banded people failing to lose substantial weight. On the other hand there are many stories of great weight loss by people going with either procedure.
  16. I know a few people that got gastric bypass and tried desperatly to get me to do that...even my doctor. I said hell no...they arnt rearranging my body!! I want to eat what I want and if it comes off slow...so be it. They would spout off about the quick weight loss...I know this person...I know that person...blah blah blah. Now the two people I know who had gastric bypass surgery this summer close to me are struggling to not eat so much. Now they see me and another freind and keep saying they wish they got the band. I feel bad for them but I tried to tell them I have seen too many people stretch it back out and that were fat again. I LOVE the option of getting a fill when I need it. And I really love the fact that my body works the same as it did before surgery:wink2:

    Sad !

It is funny but I never use the word stall...I use the word rest!..body at rest.... I never experienced one stall so far or gain either...2 reasons. I don't weigh myself that much only every 1 or 2 months...As I hit goal I will have to switch it up to once a week to keep track better. But for now...nope! I believe that the body is a magnificent machine and will protect itself from invaders and extreme circumstances.. like illness. it goes into shut down when something drastic happens to it out of the ordinary...Reserves its strength and restarts the regular flow of life when it feels safe... Our body's are like a huge city. Everything works because it is in unison. One thing is connected to the other..When something changes that, it takes defensive action and grinds to a halt.... Once it realizes that things are okay and it is being fed and all is well it starts up again...And lets that change happen until next time it is threatened.... Isn't the body amazing!!!!!!!!!!! I think so... First it made do with the extra weight that we constantly put on it and adjusted so we could carry it and live with it and keep moving..Mind you not at full capacity but it held its own... Not until it could not take it anymore did it do the same thing... Shut down our metabolism and went into protecting itself.... Don't worry about these rest periods..once your body feels safe it will start the engines again and travel forward with weight loss until it feels threatened again... Incredible isn't it that we are made this way!!!!
  18. I am on a pre-op whey Protein diet. I don't have a surgery date yet, but my surgeon wants me to lose a lot of weight before we even set a date. I have been doing very well on it so far. But, today I can't get food off of my mind. I want Wendys', Sonic, or anything "bad" for me. I was strong at lunch time (it was very hard). But, now all I am thinking about is cheating tonight for dinner. Why can't every day just be easy? I just need some motivation....

    Eating/Question

Ok. It's bad but if you get back on track it will be ok. However if you continue to graze you will probably not lose weight the way you want. Being hungry will always make you think about food but once you are past purée you may find that the solid proteins will satisfy you more. Come on Ronna! You can do this. When you are hungry in between meals try drinking some Crystal Light. You can't eat for at least a half hour after that... I use that rule to help police myself very often.

4 weeks Post-op- does it get better

Thanks Denisemic - good to know it's normal to have slow weight loss... I am the same expected rapid weight loss but that was based on things I heard ...

    psych questions?

My psych eval was pretty stress-free. Basically he wanted to make sure I knew what I was doing. He was impressed that I had studied up on it so much. He also wanted me to be aware that my life would change in many subtle but not so subtle ways after losing weight. He wanted to make sure my relationship with my husband was strong enough to weather it...he told me that other people would look at me differently, and being faced with so much attention might make me go a little crazy, lol. Overall it was a very interesting conversation we had! Just be strong in your conviction that this is the right decision for you, that you are aware that you will have to work hard to accomplish your goals and that lap band is just a tool to help you get there. Also, make sure to let him or her know that you have a strong support network at least in your immediate family and/or close friends. You'll be fine.

    Progress & Proud

Sleeved on 9/5 Starting weight 250 Current weight 193 It's been a challenge but I am thankful. Advice: Find your daily protein staples. Identify at least 2 people to be a support. Use a lunch box/bag. Find fun in physical activities again. Learn your body again ( cravings, triggers) . Enter into this journey with a mindset to never look back. Pics coming soon!
  23. I got my band in 2006. And I did really well and lost 100lbs. I still had about 75lbs to go. Then in November of 2007 I got pregnant! I actually lost weight during my pregnancy and 6 weeks after my son was born I was down 10lbs. Then I started gaining weight so I went to get a fill. My Dr. told me I had a slip but gave me a fill anyways. I had terrible heartburn for about 2 weeks but then I was back to eating normal. It did not fill like I had any resistance at all. My son is now 22 months old and I have gained 40lbs in the last 2 years. I went back to the Dr to have another fill and was told I had to have the slip fixed first. My insurance did not pay for my band and it does not pay for my fills. I contacted them about my slip and they will not pay for that either. I can't afford to pay for surgery again but I also can't afford to continue to gain weight. I am getting really depressed about the whole situation. I worked really hard to lose the weight and now I am gaining it all again! Does anyone have any suggestions?
  24. Playing tennis with a salmon! I love that!!! How true!! All of your comments were exactly right! I know I had unrealistic expectations as to how the band would work for me. I was hoping to be one of those people where the weight just falls off!! Not!! I guess if I was, I would not have needed banding! I wish they did put a band around my lips when they put the band in my stomach!! I know I have to take responsibility for what I eat and I need to get my butt out there and exercise - the band won't do that for me! Terri  Good luck to us all!

    EatIng disorder

I am not experiencing this but wanted to say I’m sorry you are struggling and glad to hear that you are getting treatment. May I ask, are you post weight loss surgery? Was this a new development after the surgery?? If not, do you feel like they just missed it during the psych evaluation or did you hide it well. I am post surgery and suffer from emotional eating and they missed it on the psyc evaluation so I am currently seeing a specialist (racing the clock getting help before my tool stops working). i just wonder how often these things are missed during the screening? It doesn’t seem to be at all standardized because the first place I called said that I needed to be there an hour early to take written tests and I found another that could get me in sooner and I didn’t do any written tests. Maybe the tests would have caught it? Anyways, i hope you find someone who is in your same situation and wish you the best of luck in your treatment.
