Just curious. I am to get my first fill on Monday. I have an 11cc band and the suggested amount is 5cc's isn't that a lot? I mean that's half the band? I may suggest 3 but I don't know? Why was the average of everyone's first band fill and here's the big question how much weight did everyone loose before there second one ? Thanks!

Finally......Results!
NewLife'sGr8 replied to chayamom's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Congrats on your results! So many times, changing a doc or getting a 2nd opinion is the way to go. It's pro-active. Too many times I see people thinking docs a demo-gods and infallible.. Lets face it. Not all docs/surgeons were A Students and some are way better than others! Great choice! I'm glad you found a doc who you feel comfy with. I wish you ALL the best in your new (old) WLS journey. I was banded in '09 too. I've had good results but it took a loooong time to come off- for various reasons. Still, before I knew it, bam! I was down about 100# all of a sudden. I think it happens like that with the band. For some, big weight drops in the beginning, for me & others, slow & gradual. I am back to basics of what to eat, how much, how much supplementation, inflammation control, etc too. We are band-sistahs - '09-time. -
I had my consult yesterday and was deflated by my surgeon's goal. I weight 242 and am hoping to get down to a normal BMI of 130-135. So I want to lose about 110 lbs. At my consult yesterday my surgeon's goal for me is 160-170. I am dissappointed. Is he saying I won't be successful? I'm 5' 3 1/2" (yes we shorties count the 1/2) at 160-170 I would still be overweight/obese. I worry now that if I get to 160, I won't be able to go any lower. Granted I haven't been 160 since I was a teen but still- I want to be skinny!

Hard Time Deciding
James Marusek replied to gubygubb's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I am 3 years post-op RNY gastric bypass surgery. I lost a lot of weight and my health improved significantly. I went from 3X in shirts down to a size Small. Think of it, a size Small. One of the best decisions I ever made. RNY is almost a gold standard in weight loss surgery. It has been around a long time and most of the bugs have been worked out. One of the reasons why I choose this procedure was because the weight falls off the quickest, the weight loss at bottom is phenomenal. I now have a normal BMI. And more importantly it has a very low rate for revision. If I went under the knife once, I sure did not want to go through it again. Also I had severe acid reflux (GERD). For GERD, having a sleeve will only make the condition worse. -
What about the skin? ?
Cupcake replied to jazzNjoeywebb's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I agree with the above statement it depends on how fast you loose the weight, where you hold the most weight s well s how your weight was distributed and of course your elastic in your skin. I work out 5 days a week and so far I'm looking great and I have lost 98 pounds so far and I am 8 months post opt. My skin Is handling the lost great so just try to exercise as much as you can and then you will know for sure . I am 44 years old so I think I look great so far lol. -

I decided to do the lapband because it has less complications. I also love the idea of not having my major organs cut. I need to lose about 110lbs and Ive read lots of stories on here of people who have lost that and more, so I am confident that if I put in the effort I can do it too. You will do very well, just follow the rules and the weight will come off. If you ever need to chat or support, Im here! -
Chattanooga MD recommendations?
~No~More~Waddy~ replied to TDRinCHATT's topic in Weight Loss Surgeons & Hospitals
I tried to respond to you yesterday, but I guess it did not go through. I used Dr. Walter Rose. I had thought he and your surgeon both used Memorial Hospital through the Weight Management Center there. I was banded on June 2 and have so far had no problem. Hope this helps. -
I'm still confused about it. The manual in 2002 stated that the 200% was based on both the lower and higher end of the met life chart weight for your height and frame. This didn't make sense to me because if you have to double the high end you more than double the low end. From this I understood that for a 5' 3" and a small frame my weight should be 248. This provision disappeared in the 2008 manual. So what does it mean for me. Can someone tell me.... what exactly are they looking for? Do I have to double 111 (low), 124 (low) or somewhere in between. I don't want to take a chance of getting a denial since it takes longer to appeal. Can anyone who got approved via the 200% tell me how much they weighed and what frame when they got approved. There is a proposed federal change coming up where tricare will catch up to other insurance companies and go by your bmi and also to cover the vertical sleeve, but I don't really see that happening this year.

Hello tkee99156 - can you explain the 200% route? I am curious if I could do the same although i don't know the criteria. You see, I don't have any co-morbities. My weight started at 250 lbs and I am 5' 4"...and according to a frame calculator i do have a small frame (some where under all this weight) and i do sometimes wear petite pants. According to the Met Life table a small frame should be 116-130 lbs (although I will be thrilled with 160).

honk replied to Lacylace2001's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I would try and look at the big picture. How have your meetings gone with your doctor? In my first meeting with the Nurse Practioner she said I needed to loose 30 pounds before my surgery. When I had my first meeting with the surgeon 2 months later I had lost about 20 pounds. After the examination he said the more weight I lost the better but that he believed he could do my surgery at my current weight. How have you done in general on your preo Op diet. You mentioned this was your first issue this week. How many weeks have you been on the diet and what other poor food choices have you made. My surgery had to be postponed for other reasons. At the pre op class the NP said to follow the doctor's preop instructions. She specifically said if we were allowed solid food to just be judicious the night before sugery. She mentioned someone who had a mexican food binge the night before the sugery but they still went ahead. -
Struggling with my weight: I've struggled for so many years with the classic yo-yo dieting. I remember dieting when I was 7 years old. I remember my extremes -- so afraid to eat anything bad that I would barely eat anything, but as soon as I slipped, would go to the extreme in the other way. Totally lost control of my weight at around 30 years old. Started researching lap band surgery at 33 years old.

Total weight loss question?
joatsaint replied to Beach Lover's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My friend tells me that I'd probably be below 200 lbs if I had plastics. I weighed in at 203 today, so if I had the excess skin removed I probably would be below 200. But since I don't really know what the excess skin weighs, I don't try to handicap my weight. To determine if I want to lose more weight, I look in the mirror and try to evaluate how I look. I ask my best friend (who I completely trust to be honest) how he thinks I look. Then I decide if I want to lose more weight. I hope this helps. -
My Thoughts Are Giving Me A Headache
LipstickLady replied to jmr190's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Shut the hell up and woman up. You are doing this for YOU -- for your heart, your back, your knees, your kidneys. You deserve to live a long healthy, happy life, experiencing everything to its fullest. Don't worry about what other people think, they aren't walking in your shoes. Losing the weight is the easy part, keeping it off is where the work comes in. You're young. I wish I'd done this before I spent half my life being fat. Take control now before you lose any more years being overweight. -
Hello.....pregnant And Scared Please Help!!!!!!!!
musicalmomma replied to Ryanband07's topic in Pregnancy with Weight Loss Surgery
Hi Ryan! First, congratulations! I can see why you'd be very concerned right now. Both are very legitimate reasons for feeling uneasy. I can tell you that MANY women have the band and have had babies and dropped their pregnancy weight after, with the help of the band. I'm sure they'll give you a complete unfill. Even so, without a fill, the band can help to keep you from over indulging...well at least WAY over indulging. Remember, gaining weight is part of pregnancy. 20-30 pounds is perfectly acceptable for a woman of healthy weight (15-20 for an over weight woman). I know "the baby only weighs '7' pounds"...but you have to add the amniotic Fluid, placenta, extra Water retention, etc...I'm sure the thought of gaining weight back is VERY scary...we've all probably yo-yo'd most of our lives and can't seem to wrap our minds around the band being a permanent aide. Try to relax about the weight. make healthy choices, continue to exercise as the doctor recommends...get plenty of rest and ENJOY! Now, I don't know what complications you had with your first child. I do know that if you were obese when pregnant, that in and of itself can pose issues. You're healthier now. Hopefully this will contribute to a healthier pregnancy. Hang in there...tomorrow is Monday and you can talk to your doctors and come up with a good care plan Best wishes! -
The time goes so fast, I didn't tell anyone until I was about four months in, people have said the same to me, I can train you or my favorite is, you don't look like you need to lose that much weight, you could just work out harder. I've done EVERY diet out there, I do well then I quit and gain back double, this is a tool I need to help me make the lifestyle changes I need.

Most insurance companies and Bariatric centers of excellence require a 3,6 or 12 month program. They want to make sure you are truly ready for all the changes required to be successful. This time requires that you go to monthly appts with a nutritionist that monitors and coaches your progress, a physcologist to ensure you really are ready, a fitness specialist who helps you build a plan to get moving, a Bariatric surgeon who examines you and works with you to determine the best WLS surgery given your health issues. Some programs even require you to go to classes and support group meetings. It is because this is not easy, and they want to ensure if you have the surgery you will put the time in. I will tell you, it is so worth it and today I am thankful for the 9 months my program took because it really did help me get ready in my head and take the right actions ahead of time. If you smoke, you will have to quit. If you drink caffeine or soda, you will have to quit, you will also learn mindful eating habits and the rules of WLS. There are a few that will ensure you are successful. In terms of the checklist it is mostly checking off if you qualify under the program. Some checklists require you have met with your PCP, they look for information if you have sleep apnea, if you have not been tested they will likely request that you have a sleep study which by the way helps get insurance to approve you. You will likely need to have a BMI over 40 or have a BMI over 35 with comorbitities like sleep apnea, diabetes, high blood pressure, reflux to get approved through insurance. All this stuff is on the checklist. Also on mine I had to write a diary of my weight gain and loss and all the diets I ever tried. I also had to write a paragraph on why I thought WLS was the solution for me..... I know it sounds like a lot but again it is worth it.

Barbara - If you have the surgeon's office in their request for authorization for Lap band state that you are a small frame (documented by them along with your height & weight) you would meet Tricare's 200% requirement (see below) for 5'4" at 250lbs. You take 116 lbs X 2 (for 200%) = 232 or more pounds..... This is the route I took & it worked & got approved via appeal letter. The surgeon initially told Tricare I was a medium frame. After going back to my primary care MD & finding out I was a small frame, I then wrote the appeal letter with supporting note from primary care MD.... Here's Tricare's Policy (found in the TPM section entitled Surgery for Morbid Obesity, CH 4 Section 13.2): Description: Morbid Obesity means the body weight is 100 pounds over ideal weight for heith & bone structure, according to the mose current metropolitan Life Table, and such weight is in association with severe medical conditions known to have higher mortality rates in association with morbid obesity; or, the body weight is 200 percent or more of ideal weight and bone structure. POLICY: A. Gastric bypass, gastric stapling or gastroplasty, to include vertical banded gastroplasty is covered when one or the following conditions is met: 1. The patient is 100 pounds over the ideal weight for height & bone structure & has one of these associated medical conditions: diabetes mellitus, hypertension, cholecystitis, narcolepsy, Pickwickian syndrome (and other severe respiratory diseases), hypothalamic disorders and severe arthritis of the weight-bearing joints. (NOTICE NO HIGH CHOLESTEROL IS NOT IN THIS LIST) 2. The patient is 200 percent or more of the ideal weight for height & bone structure. An associated medical condition is NOT required for this category.

Ahhh Tricare.
Princess losealot replied to kaitlynmarie93's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hey, hang in there. One thing that I learned getting the approval through tricare was this. The people in the benifits section are SO nice to talk to and helpful! Any time I called they gave me things I needed to know. The problems associated with your weight are key to getting it moving along. I also got an aproval letter from my pcm stating he thought it was something I needed. I am RIGHT on the line of required weight for my hight, so I was worried. I just made sure I got my list of everything I needed and turned it ALL in. It seemed to do the trick. So get the other stuff added onto your request and see how it goes. But CALL THEM. They are realy nice people there. -
Just Stop! Really think about why you had the surgery. How much it costs and all that you put yourself through. Are you never going to have control over your weight? Do you always want it to control you? Go see someone and talk if you need to. Right now you 've the best weight loss tool to help and for some reason you want to sabatoge it. Be careful you may end up hurting yourself and your stomach. 396 power, find the power!

I had mine on Jan 31st. Scale hasn't moved the past two weeks. It is frustrating as I barely can eat. Eating is a chore. But no weight loss :/ I am not getting 60-80g of protein. Is this an issue?

I am roughly 4 mo. 2 weeks Post Op and just found out I am 5 weeks pregnant. This will be our second child. I'm in shock I think. Selfishly I'm wondering will I loose weight during pregnancy (not that I want to), but for restrictive reasons?? Im scared that bc i cant eat much, will that harm the baby? Will I loose weight after the baby? Can I still drink my Protein drinks? Did I ruin my chances of ever getting rid of this weight? I still have 45 more to loose. Help!!! Sent from my iPhone using VST
