    Starting my ESG journey!

    Hi! I had an ESG September 8th, 2022. I am about 5 weeks out and just started regular food yesterday. I was already sleeved 11 years ago and had gained back about 45 pounds. I had lost 110 originally. I have lost about 20 pounds now, 15 since surgery day. I am just starting my second journey but so far so good. I had it at IBI in Atlanta. The first day was a little uncomfortable and I rested a lot. I never took any pain meds though. I was afraid they would make me sick since we cant eat solid food yet. It cost about 6k dollars. They were having a special and I think they always do. lol. I have been happy with them and my care so far. I do all my visits telemedicine. I drove to Atlanta, had surgery the next morning, followed up the next day and then drove home. I live about 6 hours away. Two hotel nights . Hope that helps! Welcome!

    My surgery is tomorrow, too! (If that's what you mean by Tuesday). The things you're worried about, are temporary issues. Once our tummies settle down - by about a year out - we can pretty much eat anything we want. That's why some people regain all their lost weight - because they're able to go back to their old eating habits. Yes, things will be hard at first. But it will get better.

    Meats Post Surgery

    Yes, this happened to me. I had to keep going back to well-cooked minced meats and trying whole meats every two weeks or so. Lamb is a little rich for me and I have found that I can eat it one day but the day after my stomach says a definite no. I have struggled so much that it's only the last few months that I can incorporate vegetables into my diet. With me the vomiting is not immediate, it happens later. I feel a pressure in the middle of my chest that I know will not go away until I vomit. Its only saliva and foam that comes up. On here it's called the foamies. I cannot drink until its gone. Things are much better now almost 11 months out, but I still have days when my petulant tummy will not accept chicken, eggs or cooked salmon. The biggest bonus to this is I do not have any hunger pangs. I have to drink milk to help with my energy levels and push my calorie count up to an average of 1000 a day. My team are not bothered, they know everything is getting better with time. I am overjoyed with my weight loss, I only ever dreamed of such a big loss. Go back to your team and ask them for help, just in case you have a stricture. If you do it's easy to remedy

    Am I weird?

    I noticed quite a few people don't want to admit to having WLS, and I totally get it. But when hubby and I go to a restaurant, I always tell the server that I had gastric sleeve surgery and I will definitely need to make a couple of substitutions on my meal and I will need a to-go box (any time we go out to eat, my meal is good for that night and at least 1, sometimes 2, more). I've had a few ask questions about it, and they all have always congratulated me and were more than happy to accommodate my needs for the substitution (typically I swap out potatoes and/or rice for a side salad or extra veggies). I'm always proud to tell them I had the surgery, and I usually include how far out I am from surgery and how much weight I've lost so far. Is that weird? I don't feel the slightest bit awkward or uncomfortable about it. Not at all. My family and friends all know and cheer me on. I was never shy or worried about telling people, and I don't particularly care if anyone has a problem with the fact that I had the surgery. Again, is that weird?
  6. I'm really ready for my hair to stop shedding!!! I'm doing all the things I'm supposed to, and I know it's normal and will eventually stop. But I really wish it would hurry up and get to it. I'm 5 1/2 months post op, and I started shedding around 3 months out, so I know I still have a ways to go. But OMG my hair just gets EVERYWHERE!!! Couch, bed, pillows, shower, floor, my clothes, EVERYWHERE. So, so annoying. My NP at the surgeon's office said I've lost so much weight in such a short amount of time that she's not surprised that I'm shedding like crazy. I know that, and I know it'll stop. But honestly, I'm shocked I'm not bald!!! Ugh....

    6 weeks post op ZERO WEIGHT LOSS AND DEPRESSED

    Hi there! Just sending you a bunch of support because I can imagine how frustrated you are. I've been stalled for 2.5 weeks - since week 2. Have lost 13lbs since surgery day and I'm about 4.5 weeks out and losing my mind. I knew to expect the stalls, but they are major mind f*cks when you feel like you are doing everything right. I hope you and your team of docs and dietician can find out what's going on and that weight loss starts back up soon. In the meantime, forget the scale and keep focus on your daily behaviors- sounds like you're doing well at that. My scale is in the back of my closet because I can't take the idea of this drastic effort not working. Here's to hoping for a big whoosh soon!
  8. Hello all, Lurked here for a while over the years. Figured I’d pop in and tell my story. Former professional American football player (Arena league, not NFL), played one year got injured, used my degree and got a desk job. My playing weight was 330 lb, so I was a big guy most of my life… then I got the desk job… kept eating like a professional football player but sitting on my butt all day. That went on for 10 years. Had to do a physical for work and life insurance. Weighed 390… the nurse asked me if I wanted to lay down after taking my BP 210/150. Oh and I had my first child a few months earlier… In that ten years, I had tried every diet in the book. Same old story. Would lose a decent amount of weight if only to add it back, plus some. The BP meds I was put on killed my libido. I was in a dead end job. Something had to give… I had casually looked into WLS a few times throughout the years, but dismissed it. I thought I was weak minded and just needed more will power. There may be some truth to that, I don’t know. I know in the moment I felt like I could die any moment and it wouldn’t surprise me. I decided to do the surgery. I was lucky to have insurance that covered the surgery and I could move through the process quickly. This is probably not the best approach for everyone, but it worked for me. I feel like I would’ve sabotaged myself if given longer. Anyways, had VSG surgery in May 2019. I have a high pain tolerance and recovered quickly. I followed the Dr’s orders to a T. Lost weight quickly. Within 6 months, I went from 390 to 230. I am now about 225. My weight stays in a range of 225-235. I have come to love the gym, got into CrossFit and love that scene. I stayed in the same career but pivoted to a different path and have almost tripled my salary. Had another kid, and I’m not on any meds. This surgery really was a life saver for me. Everything has gone spectacularly smoothly and I’ve gotten a new outlook on life and a much healthier relationship with food!
  9. Wow! Your weight loss has been incredible! I am 1/2 an inch shorter than you and started at about the same place (328 lbs) but have stayed at 215 lbs for years now. I haven't been happy with that weight but am only now REALLY motivated to do something about it since I really want to have kids. I think I need to adjust my thinking about all of this though. I've been eating way more calories (2000 or so!) and maintaining where I am at. I never adjusted down further. I also started at about 1500 or so after the initial liquids stages. I now realize that I really need to be more restrictive if I want to drop more weight -- the malabsorption can only do so much!
  10. Thanks! I definitely took the weight loss coming so easily in the first year for granted and did not do anything further when I stalled. I now see that others constantly worked at it and adjusted to succeed and that I need to show that same level of persistence/tenacity to get to where I want to be!
  11. How many calories each person needs is going to be different. There is no amount that fits everyone. If only it were that easy! It's going to depend on how much exercise you're getting, what medications you're on and what illnesses you may have. It also depends on your height and weight. For instance, a heavier person will burn more calories just sitting still than a lighter person. And someone with more muscle mass will burn more calories just sitting still than someone with less. Also, certain foods make me gain weight. If I eat two low-carb tortillas, I will gain two pounds that day. It never fails. I reckon certain foods cause me to retain water and LC tortillas are one of them. LOL! But everyone else I know can eat them and still lose weight. You need to experiment and see where your specific body is successful. Write down everything you eat or drink. Weigh yourself regularly. If you see that the scale is going up, review what you've been eating since you last weighed in and make the appropriate changes.

I have been researching (nurse brain here, lol) bariatric procedures for over 4yrs before finally being brave enough to seek out help. I’m almost 40 and have struggled with my weight my entire life. Have lost and gained back over 60lbs three times, but never in a truly healthy way. When all my scrubs were skin tight, and I was over the weekend gut limit for a bicycle, I realized I had enough - time wanted my entire life to change! I used to love bicycling, hiking, and strength training, but have gotten so out of breath all the time which made me depressed, and then I had to have a hysterectomy and everything really changed after that! so fast forward to now, I’ve lost about 10-15lbs since March/April and am scheduled for my sleeve provider in just three days!! good luck to everyone

    Yea, typical stupid BMI based guides. Fun (or not so fun), fact: BMI was never meant to tell anyone what they should weigh. It was developed almost 200 years ago by a Belgian mathematician (not a doctor), that was looking to define the normal curve for weight distribution across the human population. The formula is basically your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared. It's an excellent tool for scientific analysis on large groups of people where "averages" matter. Using it as a guideline for what any single individual should weigh is nuts though! BMI doesn't take into account frame size, bone density, race (yes, BMI is racist), muscle mass, medical history, or anything else on an individual level that might account for a variation in weight. As an example, did you know that competitive male bodybuilders (with bodyfat percentages around 4-8%), are almost all considered "obese" or even "morbidly obese" based on BMI alone? Anyone trying to use a BMI chart to determine what they "should" weigh is well advised to proceed with caution.

    looks like the standard BMI range. The PA at my clinic said bariatric patients often look 10 lbs lighter than they are because even though we lose bone and muscle along with fat, you're always going to have more bone and muscle than someone who's never been obese. You needed that "infrastructure" to hold up all that weight - and even though you lose a lot of it while you're losing fat, you're still going to have more/heavier bones and muscles than someone who's always been normal weight. So long way of saying, my clinic is fine with people who end up "overweight" or "class I obese" (which is actually not very obese - we're talking like 20 or 30 lbs). They'd consider that pretty normal.

    Have you talked to your pcp about your weight and what is healthy for you? increasing your calories with nutritional food will l help get a few more pounds on. Keep sometimes foods sometimes but feel a little freer with them until you reach a better weight.
  17. So happy to hear from you Letty! Tomorrow starts my second trimester. Everything is going good so far. My weight has stabilized but I’m not gaining. My nutritionist had advised me that I need to increase my calories by like 700/day. Even with the increase in calories and Protein (averaging 80g/day) I’m keeping level. Did you have sleeve or bypass? I had bypass and I’m really really hoping that heartburn doesn’t return - ever! Hopefully the next 8 weeks go by fast for you! Sounds like you’re going to have a Christmas baby!! Yay!!
  18. Regarding consumed vs absorbed, i would hazard a guess that consumed calories is the measurement. Wouldn’t absorbed calories de difficult to determine? Everyone will have different absorption rates. Maybe better to over estimate than under. Your scale and labs will tell u if u need to eat more or less. Regarding weight loss calories, again it depends on the person and their current weight as well as their current activity level. For me, i could lose weight eating 1800 calories when i was very active, but today that same amount is my maintenance level. My NUT was more concerned about the macro makeup of my meals vs a caloric goal. But she did say, if I remember correctly that i should aim to be at 1200 cals by 3 months and more or less the same forever. Well. I was like at 400 cals at 3 months, and sub-800 by the time i got to goal. And now at 1800. So yeah, her caloric goal did not/does not fit my experience. Best to do some trial and error to find what combination of calories/food types/activity works for YOU. And keep adjusting as necessary. Good Luck! ❤️ P.S.   19. I often cringe when writing on this forum. Their for some will criticize me for my weight loss journey when some people ask why I got the surgery. Do to my size. I'm 5 foot small fram. Lower b.m.i. I have had great results. I lost really slow have reached my goals plus some. Healthier life style

    Scared to go through with surgery

    Sometimes doctors are so used to hearing the same old stories day in and day out that they just assume that they have heard them all and quit actually listening. The ONLY remotely logical reason I can think of them wanting you to have surgery while you are actively losing on your own would be if they expect you to lose some and then stop losing. If you lose and get below the BMI threshold you would no longer qualify unless you gained again. My question would be how close to a normal BMI you can get on your own. If it were me I would wait and see how much you can lose on your own. Only you know how you are really eating and if it’s all related to this illness that is now being treated it should reverse itself. You can always have the surgery down the road if you don’t lose like you think you will. Sounds like your gut is already telling you to wait. I say trust it.

    Your comment ‘in my head I’m not satisfied’ set off alarm bells for me & I’m worried you may have developed an eating disorder of some sort even though you say you want to put on weight. Have a chat with your surgeon/doctor & ask for a referral/recommendation to a therapist who specialises in disordered eating. It’s hard to judge your weight without knowing your height but I would worry you are underweight at 100lbs. What does your surgeon or doctor say? I would also think you are eating very low calorie to be at that weight too so if you want to gain weight the first step would be to increase your caloric intake. You can do this easily without introducing cakes, cookies, etc. into your diet. Simply increase the nutritious foods you already consume. This can be through snacks & portion size if your portions are smaller than recommended. Not knowing your diet, consider adding multi/whole grains. Snack on cheese, fruit, vegetable crudities, nuts, some good fats like avocado. Your dietician would be best placed to advise you on this of course.

    I am new here and I had my sleeve done 10.7.22 and have lost 39 pounds since my surgery day.. wondering what people do exercise wise to keep the weight off and to continue to loose?
  25. I'm 2 years out I've had my ups and downs of weight loss. I've have worried daily in my success of weight loss. On how many calories, rite vitamins, exercise, list goes on. I may have been the lucky one or am I? I went thru the phase of regret not able to enjoy the food I once loved. But I loved loosing the weight. Slowly. Sex drive went down hill. Hair falling out skin crepping. " Blood levels are normal" . Started out with small weight loss goals. Reached my goals. Over and over again my goal weight was 125. I told my self I have to stick to a healthy weight for me . Not what the experts say I should weigh. Then it was a goal of 115. in my head I'm not satisfied I'll do another goal of 110. So I decided it's time to maintain my weight or gain 10 pounds back. Since I'm now 100 lbs. I'm trying to gain weight. And I'm struggling!! I want to gain. should I eat the three C's cake,cookies, ice cream? Of course not what are healthy fattening foods? The positives. Looking good feeling good.
