  1. I've been making Soups from the Bariatric Cookbook and freezing them for when I go back to work and come home too tired to think about preparing meals. I've learned that advance preparation helps enormously. I've also learned that TV food commercials are not good for me.
  2. I only have thrown out one canister: of Syntrax nectar Roadside lemonade. I use the Inspire line from Bariatric Eating. I'm not wild about the two flavors mentioned above, but their dutch chocolate is very good, and I like the Pom Razz Sangria if mixed with Crystal Light lemonade. Their flavorless PURE powder is the best I've tried--I rely on it a lot. The flavored ones are intended to be mixed with just 4 ounces of liquid--if you find them bland, and mixed with more, that could be the reason. That said, my post op tastes have changed enough that I use far more--I mix the dutch chocolate with about 8 ounces of almond milk, and the Pom Razz with about a liter of Crystal Light lemonade.
  3. I know I probably should have posted this in another topic area but I figured I get more input here. Thanks y'all! To Whom It May Concern, I am hereby requesting a reversal of the initial denial for the bariatric surgery(WLS) known as the Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy/Gastric Sleeve (VSG) by BlueCross BlueShield of Illinois. This request is made due to BCBS's assessment that my BMI is below 40. At my initial consult with Dr. Rantis, my BMI was 40.5. At that time, I met your requirement of a BMI greater than 40 without comorbitities. BCBS required that I follow a 3 month, medically supervised diet. In doing so, I lost weight and therefore, my BMI lowered slightly. To deny me for WLS because I followed BCBS requirements is profoundly confusing to me, not to mention unfair and devastating. I HAVE met the medical requirements to establish medical necessity for VSG. I am a 35 year old, morbidly obese female. I have been overweight or obese for my entire life, childhood through adulthood (my medical records prove this). While, I currently do not suffer from any comorbitties, it is just a matter of time until I develop the many disease that run in my family. Type II diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, arthritis and Cancer are diseases that are in my bloodline. It is not "if" I develop these horrific diseases but "when" will I develop these diseases. At my current state, I am a ticking time bomb. I have tried countless times throughout my life to lose the weight and keep it off. I can manage to lose a little bit of the weight but always gain it back and then some. Again, my medical records prove this. I have 3 young daughters and I need to be healthy and live a long time for them. I am confident that the VSG is the tool I need that will save me from the misery that obesity always causes. This surgery will open a new door in my life. I will no longer feel ashamed of my body and my health. I will no longer have to worry about the impending diseases I will most certainly face. I will not have to worry about about my children having to watch their mother suffer because of obesity. The surgery will allow me to live the life I have always wanted and deserved. I am asking for you to reconsider your denial and approve coverage of the VSG. Please take a closer look at my request and approve for the VSG. You will see that I have met the requirement of a BMI greater than 40 and successfully completed the 3 month medically supervised diet. Thank you.
  4. There are several online sites that sell them but the cheapest way is to call Syntrax and order it directly from them. Just tell them you are a bariatric patient. You get 11 different flavors for $9.99 with shipping included. The # is (866) 333-SI03 (7403)

    Muscle Milk

Just remember the body can process no more than 30 grams of protein at one time and anything over that will be stored as fat (from everything I have read). The Bariatric surgeons in our program recommend low fat low sugar low carb less than 15 carb gms per shake.300 calories is a lot unless it is a food replacement.

    Too tight and miserable...

I had to have a slight unfill in October, and I had to wait 10 days to do that. I did lose 6 lbs in that 10 days, but not something I want to experience again. The only reason for the wait is I am 100 miles from my doc, and the hospital in town has no clue about bariatrics. I was not able to eat, but did well with drinking, so I was doing protein shakes for the 10 days. Now all is well and I have lost another 14 lbs since then.

    Torani syrups

I have the sugar free almond roca. Yum! Smart and Final here has them as well as the pump tops. I think BJ's Bariatrics carries them online as well.

    Tummy Tuck

I am having mine on 12/18. My bariatric Dr said he could install a low profile port. My plastic surgeon said he didnt think it was necessary that he could work around it.... so I am going to leave it alone and hope for the best. My port isnt very visable all the time... just occasionally.

    Tummy Tuck

thanksLuckily my plastic surgeon does a lot of work with my bariatric dr so both know each others work.... I am hoping the port doesn't stick out too badly. I have a frowning belly button and a few folds I am so excited to get rid of The excess skin and a taught tummy will be the crowing jewel
  10. I found a new app (for me) on the App Store called Bariatric trimer. It reminds you when to eat and drink and help you set timers so you don't drink and eat too close to each other. So far I find it helpful because I've always had issues wanting to drink with my meals. I also don't feel hungry at times. Just a FYI if anyone is interested.

St. Francis, Dr Oh and Dr. Hirai Group

Hi, i am also a pt. of dr srikanth. i just had lapband surgery on 12-2-08. he is so nice, huh. i really do like him and his staff. the nurses were really sweet to me when i was in the hospital...i had no complaints. i am a month behind you...and i am so hungry. i don't think other bariatric surgeons are as strict as dr. srikanth. i have done some readin and some pt's eat right after surgery and have potatoes and other stuff that i was told not to have. i have been doing great...i think. i have lost 30 lbs so far. 23 lbs w/i 13 days of my surgery and 7 lbs the week prior to surgery. this is really hard though. i am dying here...i want food so badly and the Protein shakes are not helping like they use to last week. i feel even more hungry each day. i don't want to gain weight and want to stick to the diet cause i don't wanna mess up anything nor do i wanna stop losing. help...what did you do????????????????

    New Spokane Lap Band Dr.

I have been looking for a MD to take over my maintence somewhere in Spokane too. Trotters office does charge a crazy fee but it includes a full years worth of fills, unfills, and any complications due to the band. There is another alternative I just discovered. I go Monday to see a new Spokane MD. Dr. Jonathan Spitz at the Rockwood Bariatric Clinic at Sacred Heart. 509-838-2531.

    Self pay-

WASaBubble Butt.....yes I know about the policy having to be writtien to include it. Unfortunately they refuse to allow it. Four years ago when I started at the hospital we had BCBS and it was covered. Now we are forced to only have UHC and it is no longer covered. We thought that since they opened a bariatric unit that they would cover it. The hospital I work for is my no way in a position that they can not afford it. They are in the top of profits in this entire area. We have three hospitals and they just acquired another one. Not to include all the urgent cares and the surgery centers and the other satelite buildings they have and are building as we speak.

    Anyone from Memphis or Collierville,TN?

I live in Desoto County. My insurance prefers St. Francis, covers more if I use them. I just switched PCP a few weeks ago. She is willing to refer me to a bariatric surgeon. I asked her to help me with the 6 month documentation....she told me to go see a dietician to do that. I will be her 1st ever WLS patient. What do you think? Should I be more agressive with her or go see a dietician? Thanks
  15. Renew - I did low carb most of the time that I was losing but that is because that is how I had been eating for about the last 3 years so it was natural for me. Since I really picked up the running I had to start including whole grains and good carbs or I just couldn't make it. I thinnk now is a great time to start looking at how you want to eat for the rest of your life. Do you like eating low carb or do you find yourself craving carbs? Believe me I am still an Atkins fan. I know that I could go back on Atkins in conjunction with the band at any time and drop weight quickly...but when I started getting close to maintenance I really wanted to make sure that I was thinking about how I wanted to live the rest of my life. I also think that their little scale thing was probably off due to everythign that you mentioned. It sounds like you have a great plan going forward and certainly are in much better health.

    Help please!

Posts like this will always get a polarized response. The best I can suggest is to follow your plan and don't get so independant. The stages are established through observations on tens of thousands of bariatric patients and what actions cause horrid complications that could have been avoided. Eating food too soon is one of them. Your tummy has been brutalized. Your brain did not get the memo. That is common. Head hunger is a crazy-maker. Please take care of yourself.

Not to suggest that bariatric surgery doesn't have flaws, but from a statistical data standpoint the benefits drastically drastically outweigh the existing (and in this case not even proven) cons Is your sister a gastrointestinal or ENT physician?

    Someone slap me please!

I live *damned* well. I mean, I live so well that it's embarrassing. But my living well doesn't have to include having this or that particular food. Y'know, during my pre-surgery period, I went to an awesome wedding. I had two shakes over the course of the day -- at one point, I even stepped out of the reception to have one -- and then at the dinner, I had some of the meat entree, and a little piece of the vegan-gluten-free carrot cake they had as the wedding cake. But there's the thing. If you ask me about that wedding, I'm not going to tell you what I ate, or how much I enjoyed having the food. I'm going to tell you that we danced to awesome ridiculous 80's hair band music because the bride's family is from new Jersey, and *I* was dancing too because I had already lost 20 pounds from my pre-surgical diet. I will tell you that I found the citrus theme colors and citrus tables hilarious. I will talk about the amazing pictures or just how beautiful a wedding ceremony it was because it was focused on the bride and groom's roles in local activism for marriage equality. I will say the bridal FEZ was amazing. But what I'm going to remember, 20 years from now, is not the food. Honestly. So, do I love great food? I do. But the central part of my well-lived amazing awesome life (and it's pretty fricking awesome right now, seriously) is not food. It's not gonna be food. I'm okay having food be the background, and not the centerpiece. Last weekend, 3 days after surgery, I spent the day at a friend's 15th anniversary puzzle hunt and vow renewal and party. We raced all over downtown San Jose solving clues. (I just raced a little slower...) Afterwards, people had great Mexican food (but I had a tiny Syntrax nectar shake) and we did silly costuming things and the memories now are again, amazing -- even though I didn't get to eat anything at the event. :-) Three months ago, it would have been much harder for me to do that. I want to have *those* memories. I'm not really worried about eating pizza or ice cream, if I can be there with the people and do all the great things. :-)

    Foods

Soft foods include yogurt, cottage cheese, tuna with light mayo, creamed soups, mashable vegetables, canned chicken, canned salmon, etc. Basically, soft foods are soft going down. Did your surgeon's office or dietitian or nutritionist give you a pamphlet or handout that listed the allowable soft foods for their bariatric program?

    Argument with NP over Coffee

JFGI. Sorry, I couldn't resist saying that . The internet makes a wealth of information available to us with a click of a button. You will find arguments on both sides and each of us has to decide how much calculated risk we want to take. My bariatric program is ultra conservative. No coffee. No alcohol. Ever. For the rest of my life. Well guess what? I made a decision that I still wanted to enjoy a morning cup of coffee. Coffee didn't even appeal to me the first few months post surgery. I still find myself pouring a cup most mornings and only drinking half of it now 14 months post-op. I agree that the acidity is probably not good for me, so I don't entertain the idea of drinking more than one cup a day. What it does to my bowels is havoc alone, but that's a whole different topic of conversation ????. I think we all have to find a balance with what works for us - weighing the pros and the cons.

    Protein & Vitamins

I’m not sure yet, as I do not physically have them yet. I am going to compare the label to my Bariatric Advantage, and take them accordingly. I only take one Bariatric Advantage per day, so hopefully just 1-2 per day. 😊

I need a pep talk (rant to follow)

When I had my psych consult (pre-op), the therapist said I hadn’t failed those scores of diets over the years; the diets had failed me. Having had the bariatric surgery, I have to say this: No, it has not been easy, but I feel like my body is my friend now, and I’m not always fighting it to get my weight down.
  25. I am on day two of my preop liquid diet and so far I have tried the orange cream by bariatric advantage and banana cream and they make me so nauseated I can hardly stand it! I don't even want to drink water after drinking them! My tummy aches and feels so sick! Any suggestions or help please? I am wondering how I am going to survive the before and after liquid diet if I can't tolerate the protein shakes??
