    Yogurt...

I like Oikos Triple Zero yogurt. I usually buy vanilla, but they make plain, too. Post-op, it is really hard to get enough protein, so I mix protein powder into my yogurt. I like the vanilla yogurt with chocolate protein powder and powdered peanut butter. That may be too sweet for your taste (since there is also sweetener in protein powder), but you could try it with the plain yogurt.
  2. Day 6 after surgery: Today has gone pretty well. I'm SO lucky that I have lots of help with the kids and around the house, so I've been able to to some very good healing. What's working: warm liquids are the best, my decaf tea in the am and evening is really helping with my Water requirements. I bought some chicken tortilla Soup and strained it really well. I mixed it with a bit of greek yogurt, and it was a nice dinner last night and lunch today. It was a bit thicker than the corn soup I tried before, so I probably ate about 2 tablespoons before I worried it was too much. Almost every Protein shake I try has a horrible after taste to me, even ones I used as my pre-op, so I've been brushing my teeth a lot and chewing a 1/2 piece of SF gum (I have a jaw issue, so I'm not supposed to to chew gum but seriously, it's gross). I went out for about a 25 minute walk today and it felt pretty good. I went nice and slow. I'm having some lingering right shoulder pain, but I'm starting to wonder if it's related to another issue I have and not strictly surgery related. I see my surgeon tomorrow for the post-op and then I have another week of "full liquids." I'm going to get so bored! I'm trying so hard to keep my eye on the prize though and talk myself through any weird head games I play on myself.

    Using Syntrax Nectar question

i love Syntrax Nectar! i use the crystal Sky, fuzzy navel, pink grapefruit, apple ecstasy, and i have tried the carribean cooler but it isn't one of my favorites those are all the ones i mix with about 16 oz of Water in my mixer cup. then i mix with milk - 6-8 oz of 1% - the chocolate truffle, strawberry mousse, vanilla bean torte - i also want to try the mint i have heard it is really good! - i also like to get some plain vanilla greek yogurt and mix a scoop of the chocolate and make a chocolate pudding out of it - it is so good! 1 cup of yogurt and 1 scoop of Protein mix of your choice and it is a yummy treat! and you can divide it up into a couple servings and it is still very high in protein that way. I order mine from Amazon sometimes i can find it on Prime sometimes not just depends on what flavors i get - and most of the time i drive to Abilene - an hour drive from where i live here in Texas - to buy mine from the Drug Emporium (a local heath food chain store) they usually have them all in stock.

    Switching from liquid to mushies

Scrambled eggs with cheese was my go to mushy. Greek yogurt as well. I never did mashed potatoes due to high carb content.
  5. One of my favorite things to tell our newbies is this: Stalls are like lovers. Your first will probably not be your last. Trust in the process. It works. It just is a fickle crazy maker. I have found that even though I have been successful these last 17 months, I still investigate every new diet that comes out. I have my 18 month follow-up appointment on 6/11 and will confess to my bariatrician that I have this anxiety and a tendency to have "exercise bulemia". I feel like if I eat anything, I have to go exercise off the calories right away. So, just stay on point with Protein first, then veg, then limited fruit. I had to give up Peanut Butter and cheese to move my most recent stall. maybe I will try those again after my panni at the end of the year. (I have to be two years out.) Remember these basic concepts that many of us follow with the variety of plans our bariatric teams give us: Drink no calories. Drink Water until your eyeballs float - 64 - 80+ ounces per day. Don't eat anything made in a factory. You can do this by shopping the perimeter of the supermarket and avoid the aisle unless you need a spice or paper towels...that kind of stuff. Eat at least 60 ounces of protein per day, and at any meal, eat your protein first - then veg - then fruit. Dessert should be something like an apple, not apple pie with two scoops of ice cream. Avoid sugar, grease, and salt as much as possible. Eating clean will help you discover the real taste of natural food. If it weren't for sugar, grease and salt, McDonald's would have no business. When I gave up candy bars and started eating dark chocolate, I realized that it wasn't the chocolate I missed - it was the sugar. Try to wean yourself off of soda and diet soda. Many bariatric plans discourage soda pop and anything with bubbles post-op. Reduce starchy carbs like bread, flour, sugar, rice, noodle, biscuits, white potatoes, macaroni, spaghetti etc. So what is left to eat? meat, eggs, cheese, Beans, peanut butter, yogurt, cottage cheese, nuts, and fresh fruits and non-starchy veggies. You can adjust your current recipes to reduce carbs. The World According to Eggface is a good place to start. We have a forum here for recipes. Also, Sparkpeople.com and Myfitnesspal.com. Many of us use Myfitnesspal.com for logging our food every day. It is really an eye-opener if you are honest with yourself about what you eat. Weigh and measure your food to accurately acknowledge your actual portion size. There is a scientific principle that says, "You cannot control that which you do not measure." Exercise where you can. Move your body every day. Don't become part of the sofa. Good luck, and get going!

    Veterans: Sluggish bowels?

I'm vegetarian so I'm sure that plays a part. Lots of plant based foods full of Fiber. I am regular as clockwork and have been pretty much since day 5 post op. I go anywhere from 1 - 3 times a day, most days twice. I always have to go when I wake up and sometimes again after dinner. I find that on really active days, depending on what I've eaten I may go mid-day as well. Like the other posters have mentioned add some natural fiber in there. Apple or prune juice are good options. Probiotics or yogurt are also good. If you eat yogurt or hot cereals a tsp of wheat germ, flax powder or psylium powder may help.

    Switching from liquid to mushies

Thank you, that's very helpful, I honestly never knew that I don't each much mash potatoes but I do have some farina, or refried Beans Is there a way to make cottage cheese taste any good? I never liked it but my nut said I should start having it Have you tried cottage cheese post surgery? Preop, I hated greek yogurt, just the texture alone made me want to gag. Post op--it is one of my favorite go to foods.I tried it before surgery but I never tried it after because I think it would maybe taste the same

    Plain yogurt = *gag*... Help!

Just google "recipe" and "raita" for Indian savory recipes using yogurt. You can add roasted or cooked veggies, or fresh cucumber + spices (not necessarily hot ones) and it helps to wet your food and provide extra Protein. It helps to make it a few hours before you eat it because the flavors need time to meld.

    Plain yogurt = *gag*... Help!

@@Bexsta everyone has different taste buds and it's ok to not like yogurt. I don't think you have to force yourself to eat it unless you just super want to eat yogurt. There are plenty of other nutrient rich foods with protein out there that you will love, and you can always get probiotics in other methods. =)

    Plain yogurt = *gag*... Help!

I have a ton of allergies and sensitivities. I eat plain greek yogurt because I don't like the fake sugar and artificial dyes in the fruit kind, and I am picky about the type of greek yogurt I buy. I only buy FAGE 0%. I have mixed Protein powder, my own fresh fruit, nuts, oatmeal and even nut butter with the yogurt. It's a great source of protein. However, if you do not like yogurt, don't eat it. I happen to like greek yogurt. I ate it before WLS and continue to do so post-op. Just find other ways to meet your protein requirements. This is a big enough adjustment without punishing ourselves by eating foods we don't like. In fact here's a handy chart full of alternative protein sources.

    Just Got My Surgery Date!

Tracey, that's awesome! What an exciting time this is for you! I'm so glad you're able to move forward now in the direction you want to go in! Since you asked for suggestions, might I suggest making sure your food tastes good? This is important before surgery, but even more important afterwards. You'll be eating much less than you did before, so you can afford to add a pinch of garlic, some lemon zest, some herbs and spices, whatever you're hankering for! If all you eat is chicken broth and yogurt smoothies, that gets old kinda fast. Might I also suggest that you test drive some non-flavored Protein powders? You can literally put them in anything, and most post-op bariatric diets that I've seen rely on Protein Powder pretty heavily. Even people who can get their protein from other sources, and have gone on to a solid diet sometimes can benefit from using protein powder in sauces, Soups, beverages, etc. I'm so excited for you! You're going to do great!

    Plain yogurt = *gag*... Help!

I can't deal with yogurt at all - it makes me gag! I've tried regular and greek; plain and flavored; regular and lite; fruit on the bottom; mixed with fruit; mixed with flavorings - you name it. It's weird - I LOVE sour cream and have no problem eating that but I just can't do yogurt. Tried it both pre- and post-surgery - YUK!! I wish I could since it would be another Protein source for me.

    Plain yogurt = *gag*... Help!

Eating Greek yogurt is one of the topics I share with others about this lifestyle. I started to eat Greek yogurt on the advice of a health coach about two weeks before my pre-op diet. I detested it. I mixed in chocolate Protein powder, but the sourness was strong and it was like gagging with every spoon. After a month, I stopped gagging, but really hated it. I found I had tried so many brands hoping to find the one.....and I did.....Lucerne. It is the cheapest plain Greek yogurt. I had tried organic ones and ones with bigger brands or better packaging. I think Lucerne is a local, Texas brand. I must say while I don't like plain Greek yogurt, it has become a staple. I attribute some reductions in flatulence volume and toxicity to the yogurt (sorry if this is TMI). It remains on my doctor prescribed diet even after the Protein Powder and so many other things have gone away. I go through a 2# tub each week for $3.45. I don't shop at chains other than Randall's because other chains don't sell this brand. To me, it was part of the lifestyle change I needed to make, and I made it successful.

    Plain yogurt = *gag*... Help!

I buy a tub of Greek yogurt thats about 2 cups and add one packet of crystal lite for the individual Water bottles and 2 packets of splenda. Then I eat small servings for a snack. One tub usually lasts me a week. It is less calories and carbs if you make it this way than buying flavored yogurts, and its easier to dish up a small serving that it was eating half a regular container. I try to eat some yogurt every day. I think it helps keep me regular. My go to flavor is the raspberry ice.

    Plain yogurt = *gag*... Help!

I bought some sugar free Torani syrups because I've seen it suggested a lot, I haven't tried it in yogurt yet but they are good in plain Protein powder. But in the past I have flavored the yogurt with extracts as well and it is good, you can find a lot of flavors usually on the baking aisle, orange, lemon, mint, vanilla, coffee. I hit them up when they are on bogo haha.

    Plain yogurt = *gag*... Help!

It is weird the way different clinics require differnt things. I was allowed a light blended yogurt. They were flavored, sugar free and NO fruit pieces in them. I used Yoplaits thick and creamy light.

    2nd stage diet

I eat B: Protein shake L: tuna salad, or stuffed shells w/o shell, chicken salad or egg salad, or cottage chees...etc S: LF cheese stick (string cheese) D: Sloppy Joe (lean ground beef with lots of bbq) or salmon, tuna, chopped chicken, string Beans, or cream corn, cauliflower mashed, or brocoli heads (no more than 3/4 to a cup of food) etc Dessert: Skinny cow fudge bar or lf smoothie with fresh fruit and lf yogurt Keep in mind- I dont eat ALL of that, just examples of things to fill in each meal! Just an example. I always start my day with a Protein Shake to ensure that I get that protein in for the day, and if I get hungry I eat a small snack. I found I actually have energy when I eat at least 3/4 a cup of food for dinner. I am tighter in the morning, eat a light lunch, then a slightly bigger dinner. I can eat more at night, so I know I will be one to ease my band open once I get a fill. I have one more week of mushies, but frankly mushies aren't that bad and I don't mind being on them. if you have any more questions, let me know!

    October Bypass

I’m scheduled for bypass on Oct 8. I have had a previous surgery. (Lapband). I did the 2 week diet then before and after surgery. Slow progression to mushy foods. Followed it to the T. It was not easy...I can say the food funerals yep we held them before the two weeks nearly every day but you know what the truth is you are going to eat those foods again. Hopefully in a good and balanced way thinking of all your hard work and surgery before taking the bite right? Band didn’t work well for me, as vigilant as I was my body rejected it and it had to come out before it did any serious irreversible damage. I’m ready for this next step...easing into the diet by eliminating one meal a week and replacing with a shake. This week I am up to breakfast and lunch 2 snacks of yogurt/pudding eating only a small dinner. Monday should be all liquids....easier at work all day home and the weekends are my challenge. One big incentive is my sons engagement party is the Sat before surgery...preop weight loss means a nice dress for Mamma 😉

    Feeling guilty about eating

Thanks for the support. I eat healthy. I eat Greek yogurt no fat kind, protein shakes and chicken. I don't have control over portions as the sleeve really limits the amount. Its just that the weight isn't coming off so, I think I am doing something wrong. Then when I do eat it isn't a pleasant experience. I used to enjoy food. No more. Now it is only something I have to do and I don't really now how to feel about that. Sent from my SM-N950U using BariatricPal mobile app

  25. Wow, well with this surgery most people have some of the same negatives (the liquid diet), or have similar negative side effects (nausea/constipation), but also have good things to balance it out. I have gone through a lot of the same things as everyone else on here, and am also going through some stuff that may not be as common. Whether or not it makes us regret the surgery is definitely a personal experience based on many factors, but it seems like the majority come out on the side of No Regrets. Like you, I considered backing out a month or so before my surgery date. My daughter helped me realize that with surgery things may or may not get better, and yes, some things could possibly get worse (small percentage). But without it, probably nothing was going to change (at least not for the better). So it ended up being a no brainer and I felt extremely confident going forward even through the sucky pre-op diet (over Xmas) and what I assumed would just be a terrible first few months of puking and misery post-op. Things did not turn out the way I thought, and as I have just been journaling, I will share, if you care to read: I am 5 months post-op as of yesterday. I am down 51.2 lbs, 31 total inches overall since pre-op, body fat percentage back under 30%. My weight loss has been a bit slower than most - they say probably bc my starting weight was lower (205.8) and also I have a lot of chronic pain so my workouts are not exactly intense. But thankfully the more I lose the better I can move. My body did not want to let go of these last couple lbs - I thought I'd never reach the 50 lb milestone! It was like 48, 48.5, 49.2, 49.6...like seriously? Lol, talk about a frustrating month! But I'm finally over that hurdle and goal is between 14-20 lbs from here. I'm short, so honestly I have always looked better lower than that - say in my 120's, but I'm older now and my skin is not bouncing back the way it once did, and gravity is a real son of gun. So I will probably stop around 135/140 in order to keep things looking a little more "well-rounded" - and I also think it will be easier to maintain. That's my thought process right now anyway. My surgery itself went smooth, so no issues there. I have never vomited (which shocks me no end as I'm prone to nausea), I have felt nauseated 2-3x max - but it passed quickly. I do, however, have issues with reflux. Had reflux pre-op that was well controlled by OTC Nexium. Now it can be very painful at times. Like some others, I too think maybe I should have considered the by-pass more seriously, but also bc my ins did not cover and I went to MX as self-pay, the sleeve seemed like the best option overall. One thing for me is I never lost the hunger sensation. My "Ghrelin Game's" strong, I guess. But the biggest "issue" I have had, and it's no small thing, is I still struggle with many solid foods. I have slowly introduced them as instructed and when instructed, chew chew chew, etc. But after maybe 5 small bites of MANY foods (I do ok w/some), I still feel hungry, so I intend to probably eat a few more bites to become satiated, but all of a sudden start getting bad pain in center of diaphragm...feel completely "clogged" or "backed up" with food even though I've eaten so little and I still felt hungry 2 seconds ago...then usually get some reflux...get the hiccups...will need to take Tums...often suck on 1 or 2 wintergreen Lifesavers as they also seem to help w/digestion...then suck on ice chips for a little while which also seems to help. It sounds pretty miserable, and honestly, it is. To avoid, I could probably take 2-3 small bites, wait 20-30 minutes and have another 2-3 bites. Or, just stick to eating softer food. So, most nights I have yogurt for dinner with unflavored protein powder, chia seeds, a few mashed fresh blackberries, and a little organic coconut granola. It's about 5 oz. total, and I take my time eating that also - about 20 mins I'd say. Luckily, I enjoy the yogurt combo, but once or twice a week, I want Real Food for dinner, and that is my struggle. It's especially hard on the weekends bc my husband and I like to go out on Sat to a farmer's market or something and then have lunch (or dinner & a movie...). But it's miserable for me to sit at a restaurant where I can barely eat anything on the menu (comfortably) and then have to sit (w/back pain & probably stomach pain) and wait for my husband to enjoy his meal. Lately we haven't been going out much, which is a real drag. I expected it to be like this for the first several mos, but figured it would slowly be getting better by now. I knew I'd have diet restrictions and certain foods would take longer to agree w/me (some might never work well again), but I didn't expect that So Many real foods (meaning meats/veggies, etc. dinner type foods) would be too painful to eat. For me this is the most difficult thing and I am praying it gets better w/time. If I can eat a couple oz. of chicken/turkey/fish/steak + say 1/2 cup of cooked veggies/salad/potatoes (whatever), w/o any pain or reflux, and enjoy my food & comfortably sit & enjoy the company of my husband (sisters/kids) until they finish eating, even if it's at 9 months or a yr post-op, I will be ok w/that. It's the thought that it might never happen that worries me. On the other hand, when this happens, my husband feels so bad, and sometimes says, "I'm sorry babe, you must really regret having that surgery now." And I'm like, "No I don't! How else was I ever going to lose 50 pounds in 5 mos w/all the health/pain issues I have?" I never thought I would weigh 154 lbs again, much less 135-140 where I hope to land. So, yeah. It sucks that I have to eat yogurt for dinner most nights. (There are a handful of other things I could have instead, but some of those I have for breakfast/lunch/snacks, and also the yogurt is easy to throw together). But hopefully that will get better as more time passes, and if it doesn't...I don't know...I have to think it's got to be better than stuffing my face w/whatever I wanted but then feeling awful every time I got dressed or looked in the mirror...
