    Going into week 5

It is really unlikely you can eat 7 ounces of food IF you are following the rule PROTEIN FIRST, VEGETABLES SECOND. Most of us can eat endless quantities of slider foods and larger quantities of liquids/soft foods. 3 weeks ago I mindlessly ate potato chips and there was no restriction whatsoever (fortunately I stopped myself quickly). I can eat a 5 oz Siggis yogurt with no restriction either - but that food is 15 G protein and 13 G Carbs/sugars. When I eat a solid, lean animal protein I can barely do 2 oz at a time. But 7 oz of a dense protein? No freaking way. Now, if you are eating 7 ounces of dense protein, you should definitely contact your surgeon because your sleeve should not be able to hold that much food. You are 3 months out and have lost 30 lbs. The sleeve does not work magic. You have to WORK THE SLEEVE. Anytime you don't do that it WILL cost you progress in your weight loss. I would recommend you track everything you eat and drink and if you are not following the PROTEIN FIRST principle, start following it. You can see my weight loss below - I am now at about 3 lbs a week. I am tweaking as I go. I have just added training/exercise into my routine. I think I can get this up to loosing 4, maybe 5 lbs a week for the next few months but we shall see.

    Just been Sleeved

Wow thats great! I usually have 1 to 2 shakes per day but I supplement with high protein yogurt which I add additional protein powder to and I also have broth and add protein powder to it. Sometimes I get tired of the sweetness of the shakes so I try to get protein in other ways. Only my large incision os sore but otherwise have not had any other issues and life is pretty normal. I'm glad you're doing well!

    Ice cream

CONGRATS on the weight loss! What about freezing low fat yogurt? What's you favorite flavor? The whole point of surgery is to help with portion control and healthier choices. Try low fat ice cream/fro-yo or sugar free chocolate pudding for the cravings. I stopped craving chocolate milk since I started the nasty protein shakes. My surgery is in 2 days.
  4. Greetings, I am 1 week post-op and ready to start my puree foods. I can tell you I really liked the ready to drink Muscle Milk Chocolate protein shake, drink it cold and it was really good. Also try Oikos triple zero Greek yogurt-mixed berry and strawberry were the best but stay away from the chocolate! EEEWWWW is all I can say about that awful stuff lol. Chicken noodle soup is very tasty just strain it first, it's a lot better than broth. Hope that helps.
  5. There are 2 in mine also. I stated what I did. Just because things are allowed doesn't mean that everyone eats them. I was allowed oatmeal but I never had it because I do not like it. I do not like yogurt or cottage cheese so I don't eat them. Same thing with crackers and toast, they are on my list I never had them. I just stuck with liquids because I didn't like the pressure from more solid foods. It is a pretty short time period. I was more interested in healing well than eating food.
  6. I could not eat beef for about 9 months- too heavy- I eat chicken fish yogurt cottage cheese and protein shakes made with kale protein power crush flax seed with some frozen fruit. I'm 16 months out lost 90 pounds . I do need to lose 15 more so I must increase my walking. and change up foods a bit- hard boil eggs are also a good fix. Protein is so important. I also had hair loss and that has cycled through and getting better. We made this decision for life and I'm so much better off mentally and physically because of this surgery saved my life. I was 62 yo when I had surgery- out of work 3 weeks. I remain grateful

    Help - Grumpy AF

Im on day 3 of 14 day pre op and am totally grumpy. I think my main problem is that I don't have a sweet tooth AT ALL and all these protein shakes and greek yogurts are all grossly sweet. Cottage cheese is keeping me sane because it sort of feels like I'm chewing something. I started mixing dill and garlic powder in non fat plain greek yogurt which is so much better to me than all that fake strawberry crap. I'm so jealous of all the people who get to eat one small meal for dinner!

Guys who started over 400 lbs.

Siggi plain yogurt with flavored protein powder. Killer protein. choclate chia pudding with added protein powder. Google it. i can have ground meats on soft/ purée. I ground brisket and chicken. Made them really wet with sauces. Slow to go down. i use get cheese crisp. Because it makes mush in your mouth. Turkey pepperoni deli sliced Canadian bacon no bean turkey chili. Homemade or store bought. i made protein powder pancakes. Pretty good. Made mush in my mouth, went down fine. keep it up. Lots of folks in the same boats as you.
  9. To continue vomiting for hours after consuming something isn't something to take lightly. Take a couple more weeks off of eating those foods, then try again (but next time, try pureeing them into a liquid consistency). Grilling and broiling meat with no oil.. nope nope. It has to be soft and lubricated. Gravy and mayonnaise are your friends for the next couple months with meat. Think about the meat you feed a baby.. your tummy needs it like that. And if you don't know... go to the baby food aisle and buy a jar. You don't need to eat it, but it will show what your tummy wants. Revisional surgeries don't give the bang of original procedures. It may take more work and a longer time, but you'll get there even so. I can't do protein shakes either.. but cottage cheese and yogurt are nice and smooth, eggs might work for you, refried beans, soft cheese (like fresh mozzarella). Tofu if it's soft (I don't know anything about it, really ). You can even try a few cashews. It's still a little early for nuts, but if you eat them one at a time, and chew it to paste, it might be ok for you. Cashews are the softest nuts, without skins, so start with them. Limit nuts to 1oz a day because they are so calorically dense.
  10. I am 7 weeks post op and am having difficulty with vomiting after eating meat or fish. I will chew it for at least 60 seconds and even after a bite or two I will throw up everything and it tends to continue for a few hours. I grill my meat or broil it with no oils and I do not understand why I can't keep it down. I can't even do protein shakes as they make me sick so i'm living off of yogurt and i have oatmeal in the morning. My doctor put me on meds but it's making it worse. I'm not losing a ton of weight. I have to add that my surgery was a revision to 2 previous nissen fundoplications so I also had work on my esophagus . Can anyone recommend anything else I can eat to get my protein? Also, any suggestions on incorporating fish or chicken without getting sick. Ren

    Not eating enough...

Sounds like your eating enough. I am 4 weeks and an only do 1 ounce of fish/meat re fried beans at a time. Maybe 2 oz of yogurt. I am doing 3 protien shakes a day 3-4oz each, otherwise I wouldn't get to my 70+ grams of protien a day.

    Not eating enough...

(No need to sound so snippy.) I said I eat 2 ounces of Greek yogurt in the morning, I have chicken breast for lunch, about 2 ounces, and turkey or chicken for dinner, again the same amount. Before I work out, I have about 2 ounces (maybe) of watermelon, recommended by my trainer, and I will finish the 4 oz yogurt cup before I go to bed at night, if I feel like my stomach is empty, which is often. I often switch the chicken or turkey breast for tuna, or salmon and sometimes, I eat oatmeal instead of yogurt to get some fiber. The yogurt and oatmeal, both recommended by my nutritionist to ensure I don't get constipated again. I drink water all day, mostly Crystal Light but occasionally plain water. I drink Propel during my workout and finish a bottle of it in about 1.5 hours. I just started back drinking Premier Protein shakes, I can finish 1 - 1.5 a day. My initial question was more about the empty stomach feeling and how people cope with it, how they ensure they are eating, what habits they have developed to make sure they would eat.
  14. It isn't snacking that is the problem, it is what we snack on. Try substituting: a carrot and a one ounce piece of cheese An apple with a tablespoon of almond butter 1/2 cup of unsweetened kefir (yogurt drink) 12 almonds and 12 mini shredded wheat squares 1/2 cup plain yogurt with 1/2 c fresh fruit 15 grams 100% whole grain crackers with 1oz cream cheese 2oz hummus with sliced fresh vegetables 1/2 oz raw nuts If you want to stop cravings, stay away from sweets and refined carbs. Stay away from all natural and artificial sweeteners. If you indulge occasionally, no problem. Just don't have the stuff in the house, and be prepared for return of cravings for a day or two. Many of us hoped we could eat whatever we wanted, just less, and lose and maintain weight. Not true for a lot of us. Good food tastes really great and feels really great. Skin, hair, energy all respond well. Do weigh, measure and track. It's key to getting and staying on track. MyFitnessPal makes it really easy.
  15. I'm 5 weeks out of surgery, I'm down 38 lbs and happy (I'm a slow loser who stalls). But I'm wondering, how do people overeat? I see some people even vomit. How is that possible? Honestly, I have no appetite and I can't hold much food. A 4 oz cup of Greek yogurt has to be eaten in 2 sittings, because about halfway through, I am incredibly full, to the point I feel sick. It springs up from nowhere! My proteins fill me up quickly, I can only eat 2 oz portions of everything if that much. Even a taste of rice, while I'm cooking for my BF, makes me feel like I've had a full meal. Even trying to stay hydrated is such a chore, because I feel incredibly full after a certain amount of liquid, sipped slowly. I can't imagine overeating. Am I supposed to feel more hungry? And that's another thing - I'm supposedly not eating enough? Because I don't feel hungry, sometimes during the day, I will get a pain in my stomach and realize, it is completely empty. And I didn't feel hungry, it just occurred to me that my stomach aches because it is empty and it's been hours since I have eaten. Does anyone else feel this? My nutritionist suggested small meals and maybe even a timer for eating (I do one for drinking water and Crystal light now, so I won't forget). It's the primary reason for my stall - my body is hanging on to everything I'm eating because I'm not eating enough. How did you handle this? I'd love some advice.

    Male Post Op Advice

@atontor You look awesome. Congratulations! @gwbicster While Dr. Weiner often has interesting insights, I'm having difficulty believing head hunger equals addiction. I'm nearly three years post WLS & no longer feel head hunger. Does that mean I no longer have an addiction? Or does it mean I never really did have an addiction? I'm having a hard time saying yes to either of those questions. @Mersh You're in one of the most difficult phases of your journey. You've had surgery & now you want to eat some food you really can't handle yet. I feel for you, pal. When you're ready, consider other softer proteins like plain yogurt & then cottage cheese later. Pretty soon you'll move on to eggs, fish, chicken, pork, & beef. You can do this!
  17. I was able to have soups, and basically anything that could pass through a straw (without using the straw)! I ended up having cream soups and I would add nonfat yogurt to it so it would increase my protein intake.

    When does hunger return?

that's so crazy how every doctor and every program is a bit different but we all are working towards the same results. I started a blended diet the 2nd weeks out, if i was comfortable, but i wasn't ready yet - and 3rd and now 4th week incorporating yogurt, apple sauce, and protein shakes in. i'm going in for my month checkup to review next steps in meal planning and nutrition. keep up the great work!!

    What to eat, drink?

I had surgery 2 days after you! I just started my full liquid diet today. I had my surgery in Mexico, so don't have a nutritionist. Here are the some of the things I was approved to eat this week (please note that everyone's diet is different). I was warned that tomato based products may be too acidic but that I could try them and see how I tolerate them. single grain baby cereal thinned with milk or protein shake thinned cream of wheat boiled chicken (can be seasoned) pureed with enough broth to go through through a funnel level 1 or 2 baby food (stick with fruits cuz I hear the other stuff is gross) I am actually allowed to have cottage cheese and don't have to blend it Yoplait whipped yogurt low sodium V-8
  20. Hi all. I'm day 6post gastric bypass I've never felt so I'll in my life. I felt sick from the moment I woke from the operation and still do now but it is getting a bit better. Breakfast help

I have the same problem! I can't stand eggs, or cottage cheese. I can't find lower sugar oatmeal that doesn't have cinnamon in it (I love cinnamon, but apparently my post op tummy says no), so I can't even eat that! Protein shakes make me nauseous...no matter how I make them, and I'm sick to death of yogurt with fruit it it! I am just over 4 weeks post op. I have to FORCE myself to eat. 22. I'm having a really hard time coming up with something I can eat for breakfast. I'm 7 months out and have been struggling for a couple of months now. I ate the triple zero yogurt with fruit for so long that I can't stand the smell of the yogurt by itself anymore. I couldn't eat eggs at breakfast before surgery so I'm terrified to try them now. Unfortunately there isn't much out there that has enough protein that isn't yogurt or eggs! Occasionally I make a chicken salad and I can eat that, but it gets old after a day or two. I have given up on ever liking tuna again, once in a while I can stomach it but not often. I had been visiting the subway in the lobby of the place I work and just getting the meat that would come on a 6inch sub but even that turns my stomach some days. I'm just at a loss. Today I tried an overnight oats recipe that was higher in protein, but I'm not sure if that was a good idea. I wasn't able to eat lunch because I got extremely nauseous and had some stomach pains a couple of hours after eating it. Does anyone have any suggestions? I'd appreciate any help!

    Bariatric Advantage Vitamins

I use CELEBRATE in capsules. I rtake 2 a day. I was told if they were to bigg I could open them and sprinkle them on some applesauce or yogurt, I never had a probem with them. The capsules go down pretty good. I am 4 years out and have always taken them. I did try the Centrum chewable right after my RNY but I couldn't stand the sweetness. That is when I started taking Celebrate. Good Vitamins.

    Pre Op diet

Having similar issues. Surgery is the 28th for me, too, and I also have one week to go. My program demands a high protein liquid diet. I can have sugar-free protein shakes, sugar-free popcicles, strained cream soups, broth with protein powder, and nonfat Greek yogurt. I miss chewing and I've been extremely emotional. Zh3n, it sounds like you're coping very well, so keep up with that. My first couple of months (really much longer than that, and even now at 6 months) it's a daily struggle to take in sufficient amounts of protein and liquids. The options that provide both were very helpful for me. Premier Protein ready-made shakes from Costco, bone broth (more protein than normal broth), chicken broth with pureed chicken in it (bought an immersion blender for that), and Greek yogurt have all become staples for me. The biggest challenge for me early on was that most of the options are sweet and I was craving something savory / salty. The pureed chicken in broth did it for me. Also, some mushroom soup provided almost no protein on its own, but the flavor was pretty wonderful after so many sweet protein drinks. Be well. Good luck. Hang in there!
