Eating solids- noticing a consistent pattern
jess9395 replied to gwbicster's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Keep notes and see it's different types of food, times of day, etc. Some days I can eat more some days less. I can typically eat more at lunch than dinner. I can eat more yogurt than chicken and more chicken than tuna. -
I'm new to this.... post-op 4 weeks and very scared
Tina1102 posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hi everyone - I am from NYC but work and live in Abu Dhabi for the last 5 years. I recently had the gastric sleeve surgery in Egypt with a very reputable surgeon who was recommended to me by many. Everything went great thank God and I returned back to Abu Dhabi after the first week. I am currently here alone and my entire family is back in NY so it's been tough. I'm moving back next month but in the meantime I'm doing this all on my own. I don't have a dietitian here and no support groups and no one really knows I did this because I didn't want to share with people at work or acquaintances. I started at 180lbs and lost 15lbs so far, starting week 4 today. My doctor had me on clear liquids the first three weeks but allowed me to add yogurt, jello, and protein shakes for week 3 as well a multivitamin. Now that i'm starting week 4 he said I can eat anything but i'm so scared. Most of all scared because I feel like I can't taste anything anymore.... the weight is off but i'm scared this is too good to be true like everything else i've tried. I feel great and i'm not craving anything but am I supposed to be like this forever? I'm worried that I won't know what full feels... I guess I just get anxiety because there's no one to talk to and i'm not sure if what i'm feeling is normal. My family suggested finding a support group online until I go home so I'm hoping this will help. My mom also did the surgery back home in April and she's been doing great so she's always helping me when she can. Will these feelings pass? Will I be able to go out to dinner or just cook at home and eat more than two spoonfuls of food? Thank you for hearing my story. -

Let's Get it Started, July 2017 Sleevers!

Day 6 of Post Op!! My mom left on Saturday night but luckily now I can get out of bed by myself and sit on the toilet with no help! Yesterday was a hard day getting in my liquids (33oz total) I think Sasha (my sleeve) is not a fan of milk products Bc eating yogurt, cottage cheese, milk muscle or premier protein is really hard and it causes a lot of Burping. Today I've been focusing on zipping some water every 15mins! As for pain...still present but not debilitating. I hope all the post-ops are feeling better today! And preops good luck! -
Anyone out there cycling? Help please...

The fruit, if eaten alone, will bottom you out. The protein bars have protein and carbs, so it helps keep things even. (That's the idea of sandwiches.. protein and carbs together). The Native Americans ate Pemmican.. (meat, fat, and fruit, mixed together). Hikers' staple is gorp (Good Old Raisins and Peanuts). The fat and protein in the peanuts offsets the sugar rush of the raisins. Drinkable yogurts could work if they have enough protein. I think you're looking for about a 1:1 or 2:1 ratio, carbs to protein+fat. Not 30:1 I don't know if you are riding hard and fast, or at a moderate pace. If you're breathless, protein and fat won't digest, and you'll be hurting. I assume if there are sandwiches, everyone is taking a little break... -
Ok, so you're two months out, and I presume released to a normal diet. I haven't had but two sips of protein shake postop, but have been meeting my protein goals without a problem. You will be able to too, we'll just get creative. Cheese has very little lactose in it, and depending on the pudding, it might not have much either. So you might be lactose intolerant. You can eat tuna, so that is a great start! A can of tuna has like 25g of protein.. so that gets you almost halfway to goal right there. Can you eat nuts/seeds/peanut butter? A handful of nuts or two tablespoons of peanut butter has 7ish grams of protein. Can you eat beans? 4oz of black beans (or pintos or kidney) also has about 7g protein. You can't eat the processed egg protein, how about just a cooked egg? Dairy to try would be cottage cheese and yogurt. (Plain greek yogurt has less lactose than regular yogurt). They do make lactaid cottage cheese. Much of this will seem like a science experiment to see what you can handle. Of course chicken, pork, beef, seafood.. are all excellent protein sources. If you can eat 10oz of assorted meat and fish, that would get you to goal, without dairy, eggs, beans, or nuts. 5 meals, 2oz each, until you can eat 4oz at a sitting. Make sure the meat is nice and soft with gravy or the like.

One week post op questions! :)
Airstream88 replied to emma93's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Premier Protein water, sold at Sams Club, is pretty good and is 20 g protein. I didn't like the shakes either but you are going to have to choke them down for the next few months because you just can't get enough protein from food in the beginning. If you are using protein powder to make shakes, use Fairlife milk to mix them for an extra boost of protein. I went home on the pureed stage so I could have plain yogurt. I started putting SF Hershey's syrup and SF Peppermint Paddy coffee flavoring syrup in my shakes to change up the flavor. Hang in there it get's better every month! -

Having trouble eating 3 weeks post op
egypthntr replied to egypthntr's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
Thank you so much for your comprehensive answer....I appreciate it. I have been keeping hydrated, but I am probably low on carbs. The only things I can get down are yogurt (some carbs) and sometimes hummus. It depends on the time of day. I called the nutritionist last week, but no response so I am calling the doctor today. Pre op day 6. Down 7 pounds. I'm not even hungry. I have 1 scoop of powder mixed with 1/2 bottle of Mocha Light Starbucks drink twice a day. Plus lots of strained soups. Or the triple zero Danon yogurt with PB2 powder. I cheated on day one and ate a small dinner. The first 48 hrs were killer. Today I was tempted with donuts and cookies and easily passed them up. Surgery in 8 more days. Hoping for a new life.

Y'all, I am only two days into this 10 day liquid diet and I just feel grumpy and want to hide in the bedroom and sleep till my surgery date. I've had both chicken and beef broth, the premier protein shakes, jello and yogurt, tried cottage cheese but the kind I got was crap. Didn't want. I have tea for breakfast. I know - wah wah wah....but the struggle is real, y'all. Hep me, or just commiserate on how much this sucks with me.
-
My surgery isn't until the 28th. I'm three days into my liquid diet, but I have big plans for soft foods including baked ricotta, refried beans, and poached eggs. I'm also going to be giving my immersion blender a workout! We'll see how it goes. I would check with your dietician on the fruit question. I would imagine that you would still need to keep an eye on sugar and make sure you're getting enough protein. My doc says Greek yogurt is good for protein. It's also one of the things I'm allowed right now, so that's nice! Sent from my Nexus 5X using BariatricPal mobile app

Sugar/Dairy tolerance 14 yrs post
Berry78 replied to Lady Havok's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I think, from your list, it's the sugar + fat combo that's bugging you. Yogurt is often fat free cheese is sugar free candy might be fat free fruit is fat free milk .. depends on the type.. but if you tolerate it, then lactose isn't the issue sugar in coffee and tea is fat free ---------------------------------------------- ice cream... sugar + fat frozen yogurt... and smoothies... not sure.. if they are both fat free, then maybe it's the.... cold? cake.. sugar + fat Chocolate.. sugar + fat -
Sugar/Dairy tolerance 14 yrs post
Lady Havok posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have no trouble eating yogurts, cheeses, most candies and fruits; drinking milk, sugar in coffee or tea. But; big but, I cannot eat ice cream, frozen yogurt, fruit smoothies, cake and chocolate in bar form. I know that some of these things are no-nos. But, in the off times that I eat them, I get very sick. I get sweaty, dizzy, have trouble concentrating and finishing sentences. I feeling nearly poisoned. What confuses me is that it is not consistent after 14 years. Does anyone else have similar issues?- 3 replies

i go pretty tired of the chocolate protein shakes too after the pre-op diet. so post-op i stocked up on bottles of Isopure. they are clear, fruity drinks. they taste good and have a whopping 40g of protein per bottle. i have half the bottle in the morning, diluted with water, and the other half in the afternoon, diluted with water. then i have a protein shake at night. that's 65g of protein for the day. then i'll add in some broth for sodium. and sips of V8 or tomato soup. a spoon of non-fat organic greek yogurt if the mood strikes me. variety is definitely key. and the broth is key for me because i'm a salt person, not sweet. and yes, one of the laparoscopic holes in my abdominal wall is still hurting 2.5 weeks after surgery. but only when i stretch it too far or lift something i shouldn't. saw my doc a couple days ago and he said it's very normal, that everyone has one spot that takes longer to heal. btw - if you're interested in the Isopure drinks, the best (cheapest) place to get it is direct from their website.

Each surgeon has a different food plan. I was on liquid for week 1, puréed for 2 weeks then soft foods at the start of week 4. On the puréed stage, I ate lots of eggs, yogurt, cottage cheese. Hummus was a good option. For me, softfood meant if I could cut it with a fork (no knife) it is allowed. I'm eating tuna, cheese sticks, lunch meat. Ground beef for tacos (no shell), pulled pork. You'll find you have lots of options. For salad, eat the toppings (meat cheese, some veggies) skip th lettuce. Greens are just filled. Same with sandwiches....skip the bread...it's just filler. With th smaller stomach, we don't need filler.

Am I losing too fast too soon?
Kat410 replied to sylvia2017's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I had a similar experience. You may want to consider just doing higher protein intake - like protein shakes, bone broth, etc. which packs more protein than eggs or greek yogurt. I don't think the issue is that you are loosing too fast - but your protein intake does need to get upped and I would recommend you find ways to get it up. You can see my stats below, I am not sure what your BMI was - mine was 51 at the beginning of the 2 week pre-op liquid diet. I lost 16 lbs on that diet and 10 the first week after surgery and I am now averaging about 4 lbs/week and I suspect that will slow down at some point in the future. I find % of excess weight lost to be a better measurement because comparing pounds across genders, age ranges, BMIs and metabolic types to be like comparing apples to oranges if what you want to do is track your progress overall. By the way - when I have dieted before, I had been a very "fast looser", in particularly on organic high protein/fat diets with the elimination of all carbs outside of green veggies (however, I always hit some weird hunger/hormonal wall at about 50 lbs lost). This is the first time I have lost more than 50 lbs, and that was done in the timeframe in my signature below. -
Pre op weight 319 Current weight 270 Sleeved 6/22/17 Today I weighed and I've lost 49 lbs in 23 days. At first I thought it was due to fluid retention. But I got all the fluid off the first week. I know I'm not getting very many calories between 200-400 daily. Plus I only get between 20 to 30 grams protein a day. But I am getting all my water in. That's pretty much all I drink. A typical day for me is 1 egg for breakfast a greek yogurt with protein for lunch, and a protein shake for dinner. And water all day. I'll eat a sf popcicle as a snack. When I eat pureed or mashed foods I fill too full or get extreme gas pain so I try to just stick to this plan. I don't feel hungry until it's to the point of feeling weak then I know I gotta eat. I'm happy with my weight loss but I'm afraid of what it could be doing to my muscles, teeth, and hair. I can start soft foods in one week but really afraid it will cause stomach problems. Grocery list: essentials for pre-op liquid diet?
RedOrangeSunrise replied to RedOrangeSunrise's topic in Pre-op Diets and Questions
I've also discovered that I can have pumpkin soup, tomato soup, Greek yogurt, and iced tea. I think I'm going to make it with my last nerve in tact (my kids have been jumping on it for years, and it's survived thus far). I'm going to make tzaziki (sp?), strain out the garlic and cucumber bits, then top homemade soups with it. I will make this diet tolerable! Sent from my Nexus 5X using BariatricPal mobile app
