    Banded for one year

The band was not a fix it all for your weight issues, so you will probably need to get professional help to find the root cause of your emotional eating. Emotional eating is not something that will go away, it has to delt with. Until you understand and learn how to turn your emotions to something else besides food when things get hard. You have learn tools to deal with your stress and emotions, not food. You have to replace food with something else when you get stressed. I read you're a runner, and if running is not helping with your stress then I would recommend talking with someone. The weight gain is a symptom, and maybe talking to your surgeon will help. Good luck!
  2. Yes, once you go back to solid foods, it is normal to see some weight gain back and it is OK! The band is designed to work with a fill. Just advise her to continue to eat good healthy meals like she has been doing and make sure that she is watching her calorie intake and getting enough water. Fitday is a good free source to log those calories. Best wishes!

    What’s Your Attitude Towards Carbs?

Nothing to do with Carbs or Protein IMO. My GP, in the 1990's, when asked about weight gain/loss said "just keep your 'explicit adjective' mouth shut". Oh how right he was! The most important thing is the psych aspect! One needs to forget what is considered normal plus all the peer pressure along the lines of needing to eat 3 times a day & cleaning your plate, whether you are hungry or not. Keep reminding/asking yourself 'am I really hungry'? & if the answer is NO or NOT REALLY, don't eat or leave whatever is left on your plate. Friends now know not to give me large servings as I eat & chew slowly & 3/4 will be left on the plate. Eat & drink anything that you like, take the Vitamin & supplements your doctor/s recommend & have the required blood analysis done every 6 months or so, to ensure it's all working to your advantage. It's nearly 2 years & although my wife went to meet with the nutritionist, who fully explained/demonstrated serving sizes etc. she still insists on trying to do things, as before my sleeve. I like a good hearty Breakfast & light lunch, then maybe a salad, snack & perhaps a couple of beers @ night.... She doesn't do/want breakfast or lunch but likes a big evening meal. There are always copious leftovers & the dog up the road gets extremely well fed. Plenty of arguments, but I did not go through this to get fat again. Regarding carbs: Make own bread from scratch 2 or 3 times a week with plenty consumed as toast & open sandwiches, Love rice & noodles Have a few beers or ciders most nights & drink about 1 litre of full milk throughout the day as iced coffee [decaf]. So am I doing everything wrong carb wise? Weight stabilized @ about 80kgs [surgeon said it would be 83], BP 120 on 72 & blood glucose 4.2
  4. When was your last fill? Sometimes it can take days or even weeks to feel the effects. Have you had any stress lately? Stress can cause me to feel instantly tighter. It doesn't sound like you have anything to worry about, slippage usually causes things like reflux, pain, loss of restriction, weight gain. I would agree that you should just wait and see what happens.

The scale is NOT my friend

There's are lots of ways to handle this, all of them good. I have noticed something in my weight loss that no one's mentioned here yet, so I'll put that on the table for ya. I track my weight on fitday.com...then you can see a little graph of your weight loss over time. I have a pattern: drop some weight, gain a little back, hold for a while (maybe even a week, or two), then whoosh some weight comes off. Repeat. My graph, while overall moving steadily downward, has little peaks in it where my weight goes up after it goes down. Now, I just consider the progress "interesting" and don't get emotional about it. It took 3 months to get the idea, and now I'm almost 5 months out from surgery...I like analzying things, so I like to watch the pattern. Probably just me. Do whatever works for you! Cindy

The weight gain is from all the iv fluids... Totally normal and drops off after a week
  7. I was recently diagnosed with sleep apnea. I'm pretty young (26) so it was difficult for doctors to take me seriously. I always woke up with a horrible headache and would trip over everything and can barely function in the morning. This has been going on for years and I thought it was just normal for me and I just wasn't a morning person. I'm still waiting for my CPAP and I'm hoping this will help me feel better. This diagnosis makes me qualify for the sleeve. My BMI is 37. I had my appointment with my surgeon and he said using the machine will increase my chances for success with WLS. They also have a theory that my sleep apnea caused my rapid weight gain because I had no change in my eating habits. Best luck to you on your journey. Bulimia

Bulimia Nervosa Bulimia nervosa is a serious disorder that involves a recurring pattern of binge eating followed by dangerous compensatory behaviors in an effort to counteract or “undo” the calories consumed during the binge. People with bulimia often feel trapped in this cycle of dysregulated eating, and there is a risk for major medical consequences associated with bulimic behaviors. Research has provided varying results but conservative estimates regarding bulimia indicate that about 1.5% of women and .5% of men will have bulimia at some point in their lifetime. In certain populations, prevalence rates are much higher, such as on college campuses where up to 20% of college-age females endorse symptoms of bulimia. Diagnostic criteria for Bulimia Nervosa (from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, fifth edition (DSM-V) Recurrent episodes of binge eating Recurrent inappropriate compensatory behaviors (such as self-induced vomiting, misuse of laxatives, fasting, or excessive exercise) in order to prevent weight gain The binge eating and inappropriate compensatory behaviors both occur, on average, at least 1x/week for 3 months. Self-evaluation is unduly influenced by body shape and weight. The disturbance does not occur exclusively during episodes of anorexia nervosa https://www.eatingdisorder.org/eating-disorder-information/bulimia-nervosa/

    Gastric Bypass Myth

As a 5-way-bypass survivor who has been through multiple cardiac caths and angioplasty I think I have to disagree. The mortality rate in gastric bypass patients of an older age far exceeds any heart surgeries. That I know to be fact. I'm honestly concerned now in what you say about lap banding being tougher on patients that are older, because I'm older than you. I'm 63. The seminar dr. told me there was not the risk with lap banding that is associated with gastric bypass in patients of this age. He told me lap banding is perfectly safe at any age. Can you give me some more info on where you got your data? I have received nothing but encouragement to have this done "for my heart", so perhaps I need to look more closely at it. It is minimally invasive as compared to gastric bypass which is truly invasive, so please fill me in on why banding is difficult for older patients. You are having a surgery that is more invasive then gastric lap banding? What is this DS surgery? I'll say a prayer for you. Why do you have to have the more extensive surgery? Can you describe just what it consists of and why lap banding would not be an alternative. Thanks and God Bless. I said a lot of prayers after going through multiple angios and stents and then having 5-way-bypasss at 59, but I came through it just fine. The doctors took away my cigarettes, which were really a crutch to prevent weight gain. I weighed 160 at the time of surgery and am 5'9". I was fine with myself. Now, I eat like a piglet and am always hungry without the cigarettes. I would never go back to them, but I've created one more hazardous condition because I gained so much weight when I quit. You are dammed if you do and dammed if you don't it seems. Does anyone have any encouragement for banding at an older age?
  10. Hey Everyone, If you were unaware of the situation basically I was supposed to have lap band on August 26th but a week in to my strict liquid pre-op diet I found the strenght to control my eating on my own so I post poned the surgery indefinetely. Majority of the members of this forum told me I shouldn't have post poned my surgery because I'd just end up gaining the weight back and needing surgery regardless. The week of that pre-op diet I actually lost 22 pounds and was 351lbs (started at 373), after I made the decision I started watching my portions and my decisions but actually gained 5 pounds back (356)... Immediately I thought "what the hell did I do?" but I didn't let that lose my focus and I understood this was a marathon not a race. Glad to say a week later I was back down to 351 and I scratched that 5 pounds to my body just going from eating absolutely nothing to something(literally didn't eat anything for the preop diet) and Water weight gain. Now that I'm a month in from this journey (started the preop diet on August 12) I do not have any urgers to binge eat at meals like I used to. I'm not even thinking of ordering that big lunch I used to have I'm always thinking SMALL SMALL SMALL. I had a cheat day on Sunday (football day) but my cheat day was nothing compared to what I used to do on a regular sunday! I found this will power and I'm pretty happy with my decision right now. This morning was my weight in day and I came in at 349, my first time under 350 in over a year which makes me happy. Of course the weight loss isn't going to be as fast as it would be with the lap band, but the ability to know I'm really doing this on my own (i used to only do pills for weight loss) is really uplifting. Thanks to all those who were supportive, still have a long way to go.
  11. I am 19 months post op from DS surgery. I’m SO happy with my weight loss. I’ve been fluctuating between 140-144 for a while now (months) this week out of the blue with no change in my diet (which could definitely be better) or exercise (which is always good) I’m up to 145 146 148. Should I be worried this is a wall I’m hitting? Wil I be 175 by the end of the year? Not that I’m emotionally scared from my pre surgey life or anything ha! Or is this just normal and keep on truckin’ and expect to be back in the 140-144 zone in a week or so. Argh so nerve wracking!

Numbness in left side of left thigh

Lateral femoral cutaneous nerve dysfunction - very common following rapid weight loss (or weight gain). Harmless but annoying. Don't cross your legs, that can make it worse.

    I need help badly!

I think it's good that you are reaching out! Do you have a dietitian whom you can go see for advice? i would also focus on Protein, Water, and track you food in myfitnesspal.com. How can you eat portions close to the size you were eating before surgery--do you not feel restriction? Wishing you all the best--youc an do this! Even with your weight gain, you are 1/3 of the way there!!
  14. I just wanted to post a follow up on this thread. I had a support group meeting at my bariatric center and asked one of the nuritionists specifically about the no weight gain aspect during the medically supervised period., She said it does vary from insurance policy to policy but most of them would make you start the medically supervised period over again from the beginning if you had a weight gain at one appointment compared to your weight at the previous appointment. So as an example if you have a 6 month supervised period required, and at appointment 4 you had gained weight compared to appointment 3, you would would have to start all over with a new a new appointment 1.

    Addicted to weighing

I weigh myself once each morning when I get up. I record the weight. I use this to evaluate the effect of my diet on my continued weight loss. It is not a negative obsession. If my weight goes up or down, I do not panic. It just informs me that my current approach may need some fine tweeking. Weighing yourself daily can become negative if this obsession alters your mood. This habit can cause stress which can lead in-and-of-itself to some weight gain. If this is the case, avoid weighing yourself, throw the scale out and let them weigh you at your doctor appointments.

    Steroid Injection

I have had that issue as well. It is one of those deals that damned if you do and damned if you don't. I have just had to talk myself into which is the more temporary condition -- weight gain or pain.
  17. Hello Everyone, I just joined this forum. My Doc has the same policy of waiting in between both surgeries. I think it makes a lot of sense. If you are going into someone's stomach and going to staple all this tissue into a shape of a banana , you would want it to be good tissue and not want it to come apart and have problems down the road. This is what we pay good doctors to do. So I don't mind waiting If the Job is done RIGHT. However, I do worry about the weight gain just like the rest of you. My Doctor, when dealing with the Ins company wrote them a letter and ask for approval for BOTH SURGERIES AT THE SAME TIME. So i got the approval for both surgeries already. He said he wanted me to have my band in while I was getting approval for these surgeries. Now I will have my Band removed on Oct 9th 2013 and Jan 1014 have the sleeve done. I will do my best not to gain, but I know it will be hard over Holiday time....But I want good tissue for him to work with.. and after having a band in for so long, it can only be wise to let good tissue grow... I do want to ask "what is "BCBS" THAT you speak of?? I don't think I have ever heard of that? Wishing you all well Jewel J

    Weight gain-is it normal?

My doctor said no...but I am convinced that the gas they shoot you up with is the reason for an early weight gain. LOL He said its because your body goes into a protective mode for a few days after surgery thus saves anything you put in your body. I dont know what to believe but can tell you after 2 weeks of liquid and 1 week of mushies ...unless you are drinking fat ladened milk shakes you should lose weight! Stay off the scale.

People that don't update their profile.

Recent Events-I was 217 at my initial appointment in February, I did some celebration eating...As I learned more about the process and filled out the 5 million psychiatric questionnaires at my last appointment I realized I needed to get my stuff together or this surgery isn't going to help me. I work at a school and lost 20lbs over the summer with a personal trainer twice a week. I gained it all back plus some after school started. When the weight gain started getting serious is when my husband got COPD (along with many other desert storm vets). I quit smoking before him to encourage him to quit. He also has a tumor on his adrenal gland and has to eat a lot to maintain his weight (the only time I saw him thinner is when he returned from desert storm). Then my Mom died. My daughter went off to college, my oldest son got commissioned after college ROTC (he stayed at home and went to school while serving in the Texas Guard). He is a 1LT serving in Iraq right now. He is stationed at Fort Hood which is close to our home so he should be back in a couple of months. My youngest son is in his JR year of high school, but got ahead by earning lots of high school credits in middle school. He plans on completing his remaining 2.5 credits at an online high school so he can start college in the fall (community college at first so he will still be at home). One advantage of paying out of pocket is that I don't have to have insurance approval, so I am confident the surgery will happen. Since I work for a non-profit they only cover half of the insurance cost for employees and the VA costs me $0 per month. I already pay close to $300 per month for my youngest son to have the worst *** insurance available (there was a cheaper option, but no providers in my area accept the insurance). I won't lose the house if he has to go to the hospital, but he is only covered to go to the Dr. twice a year with a $40 co-pay. Then it is out of pocket until we reach the $7000 deductible. I think I would save money just having catastrophic and paying for individual appointments. I say that to say, yes I complain about the VA a bit, but the available health plans in my area suck even worse and you have to pay for the privilege of waiting for the "health plan" to approve treatments instead of just doing what you and your Doctor think is right.
  20. I have my pre op appointment in a couple days. They are shooting for April 30 or May 1 for surgery. I am very aware that this is going to be a lot of work. I am hearing all these stories of weight gain after bypass surgery that I am so afraid I will be one of the statistics that do gain it back. As many of you all know the feeling of diets not working, I can't help but keep asking myself what will make this any different? I know me getting the sleeve is different then bypass, but I am still very scared. Any advice would be so appreciated.
  21. I still look in the mirror and see a fat woman. This has been going on about a week now where I look in the mirror and quickly have to jump on the scale to make sure I have not gained weight. I go up and down about a kg or so....but other than that no weight gain (knock on wood). I'm down to a size 2 I feel good, I have lost a lot of hair but I cut it all off into a cute style and have had it dyed so on that front I'm ok....

    Weekly Weigh In

I am 221 and 9 months pregnant. That is a 58 pound weight gain and this month alone I gained 17 pounds. My belly got huge this month! I started getting edema bad so hopefully 10 pounds of that is water. I am really sad...but at the same time...I am having a baby. I lost 130 pounds!!!!!!! Now my loss is 70 pounds. I have been eating so many freaking carbs! Any day now I will start posting my losses again. I just hope I can get back to 160/165!

    Bari-athletes and food

on runs longer than 5 miles, I make sure to fuel during. I tried numerous things and found that Clif shot bloks work best for me. I take 1 blok every 2 miles. Each blok is 33 calories and I find that it leads to a steady stream of energy in my system. When I run 1/2 marathons I add in a mid run snack of either teddy grahams or pretzel sticks (both surgeon and NUT approved) The teddy grahams also deliver a quick jolt of energy since they're mainly carbs, but they do have a few grams of Protein in them. They also basically dissolve in your mouth and are easy to eat. They've never made me sick. I sometimes have trouble with cramping during longer runs, and the pretzel sticks work for me. Again, mainly carb, but the salt helps ME with my runs. I ran the Hollywood Half Marathon this past weekend and brought teddy grahams with me. I wish I had the pretzels because I had a cramping issue after the race. I found it is all finding what works for you. Some people swear by Gu . . . but it makes me want to hurl. I found the main thing is making sure I have a steady stream of energy and liquid during the race so I don't die or dehydrate. I was given permission by my surgeon to ignore the no eating and drinking at the same time rule during a run since the shot bloks need the Water to properly break down in your system. Good luck finding what works for you. Oh, and you can carb load . . . I worked with my surgeon (who is a runner) to develop a plan. I increase my carbs 203 days before a race. I typically stay under 50g a day, but the week of a run, I increase to 80 or so. I don't go crazy eating plate fulls of Pasta or loaves of bread, but I will add in some potato, oats, etc. and I've never had a problem. It doesn't make me crave carbs, nor does it lead to out of control weight gain.

    Spouse or Sig other

I can only share with you my experience. My husband hates me tiny. He hates it with everything in his being. Literally, he loves that I am gaining weight in the pregnancy. He jumped up and down when the scale showed a 15lb weight gain. He has always preferred "thick" girls, all of his exes were bigger girls, I was just the biggest he'd ever dated. He admits that my personality/character traits/behaviors have not changed with my weight, but he doesn't like me below 150lbs. Well, he just learned to deal with it because I got down to 125lbs and a size 2. He likes me best around a size 7/9. He has a preference, and I no longer fit into that preference. However, I told him that I had a preference of taller, dark-haired, hairy chested, older men, and then I met, fell in love and married his scrawny 6ft tall, 6 years my junior, 165lbs framed, blonde-haired, blue-eyed, bare chested offerings, and he needed to realize that he fell in love with me, not my size just as I had fallen in love with him, not his physical attributes. It's been a tough 2 years with me dropping weight, and sizes changing. The big, round, soft women he "knew" doesn't exist anymore, but he still loves me, still thinks I'm beautiful, and loves everything about me. Lots of communication has been the key to use navigating through the changes.

    September Sleevers WYA? [emoji7][emoji39]

Yeah I used to be a gym rat eating Paleo and all that fun stuff for a couple years. Then ya know...life decided to be like "nah she doesn't need to be successful and healthy-let's throw some whack stuff at her" LOL! It's a cycle for me; 3-4 years of weight loss success then 1 year of crap and rebound weight gain. Again, portion control is my kryptonite. 🤦🏽‍♀️ [emoji23] Uhhh can I just say that our stats are like almost exactly the same?!
