Seminar JULY 7,2009 very anxious!!!!!!!!
Devana replied to anxious09's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hi anxious. Welcome and congratulations on your decision to get banded. As far as the loose skin goes, I don't know, but I imagine it wouldn't be any different from bypass. Weight loss is weight loss. On the other hand, thing might be better with the band because I believe our nutritional status would be better since we have no malabsorption issues. All the best and keep posting! -
Hi there Everyone! I have just decided to get the band after thinking about it for years. I just can't go on another diet where I will gain all of the weight back. I am 38 years old and have a life to live that hopefully will include doing sports with my family, (outside of my house!), swimming in front of others without shame and playing with my kids. I just had my sleep study last night, so am groggy and relatively unpleasant right now, but that will pass eventually! I have my psyche eval on Weds and then my nutrition and initial consult on Jan 15th. I am moving to Puerto Rico, so I wanted to get the surgery done before I leave for there. Thank you all for continuing to post on this site. Information is my best cure for worry. I look forward to being a big loser with the rest of you. :tongue2:

Hello everyone! I have finally gotten up the nerve to post my store. I found this sight about a month ago and as my family says I have been "creeping" on all of your story's. I can't begin to tell you how much they have helped me. I will just try and tell the short version. Haha........ I have tryed for years to get insurance to cover the lap band surgery. Three deferent times I had went through all the steps just to get turned down. So this year for Christmas my wonderful husband of 14 years surprised me with all the paperwork and schedule surgery in Tijuana Mexico!!! Of corse when I realized what it was I so shocked and then found out where it was going to take place I was scared out of my mind!!! But knowing my husband he put a lot of time and research into find the correct Doctor, and I'm happy to say with MY research too, Dr Ortiz with the OCC is going to be doing my surgery. In the process of all my studies I have decided that the band is not at all what I needed or wanted in my body.( And again keep in mind I'm trying to make this short.) I feel like the gastric sleeve is the best choice for me, but doing this with out a support group and from such a long distance is scary. I am on my 6th day of my presurgry diet and about to go crazy!! I have read a lot of other people's diet and it is nothing like mine!! I have to have 14 days of two shakes a day and one small weight watchers dinner for supper. I can have as much as I want of raw or stemmed vegetables as long as there GREEN!! For me that means about three to four things!!! Blaaa!! I have to keep telling myself that nothing is easy and this is just the start! Thank you for all of your great stories and help! I look forward to making new sleeve buddies!!

Well...welcome to the site! I found it before surgery and its been so helpful. Everyone where I work had Gastric Bypass...I would have felt lost without being able to hear everyone on here! Congrats on all your weight loss so far!

Hello everyone, I am new here and just had my sleeve done on Jan 17th. I had a few issues so had to stay in the hospital for 3 nights. I am doing better but my tummy is still swollen. I have not gotten on the scale yet because I don't think I have lost anything yet. But I am very glad I had this done and know I will have a good outcome. I have fought my weight problem my whole life and I am hoping I have found the solution. I know this is a whole new why of life and I am ready for it.

You will most likely be glad you did it. Surgery will be rough but after heal and lose a ton of weight you will be glad you did it. I have lost over 110 pounds since my surgery Oct 22 2012. I am glad I did it.

Hi there and welcome, we are glad to have you join us. In answer to your question, yes, what you are feeling is normal. In the first week or two immediately following surgery, you are not very hungry because of the swelling. However, once the swelling goes down, you definitely get hungrier. That is because the time right now is for healing, not losing. The band is designed to work with fills. Once you start getting your fills, you will find your hunger will start to dissipate and the weight will start coming off. Prior to getting your fills, it is not unusual to not lose any weight and even gain.

Everything you eat in the first month feels like too much, but once you see the weight coming off you'll relax. I was most hungry during week 2 & 3. How full you get is definitely dependant on what you eat. Mashed potato vs grilled chicken for example Everyone is different and some people bounce back a lot faster and are able to eat more at first. Everyone else will catch up in a few months and be getting the same amounts down. Just feel lucky you are doing well! I could easily drink liquids so I ditched the protein shakes because they left me hungry and I was just drinking calories away. I switched them out for soft foods to make me feel full. Obviously stick with what your doctor recommends but just some information to keep in mind for later Sent from my LG-H850 using BariatricPal mobile app

Pretty much the same situation with me. I was totally disgusted with myself, and the weight I kept gaining. I was afraid I was going to die of one of my health issues, and that no one would be able to lift my casket! Seriously---I worried about it! A friend and I had discussed the band, and began looking into it. She and her husband went to MX self pay within a couple of months. I was trying to get insurance to pay---so fought with them for almost a year---and ended up in MX self pay as well! By the time I had my surgery, she and her DH had both lost a lot of weight! My SIL and I went together to have it done. I do not regret a single thing about it! I'd do it again in a heart beat. I have recommended it to lots of people (who ask---I do not go up suggesting it to strangers!!!!), and have had a couple follow me! Good Luck in making your decision. Do lots of research! Welcome to LBT! Kat

I am new to the site, so hello to all. I went to see the program coordinator this past Wednesday. It went well and lasted about an hour. The nurse told me I had to do all these tests and blood work before I could have the surgery. Amazingly, I got all blood work and tests done the very same day. Luckily I hadn't eaten that morning b/c one of the test had to be fasting. The dietitian was also free for that same day, so that was great. I go see my primary care doctor this coming Monday to get checked out and get her to sign something saying I can have surgery. I go see the weight loss doctor Jan. 25. so I think I will be able to have the surgery early Feb. (I hope). How soon after you first see your doctor does he/she schedule surgery? A week or two?

xercisegirl replied to xercisegirl's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
but your weight loss is good. 20 lbs in 3 weeks? NOt to shabby. Thanks for the reply. -
My experience is that I weigh less in the morning than in the afternoon and usually try to get into the Dr's office early specifically because of the weight in.

I'm considering the sleeve or gastric bypass...

I'm not sure which to choose? I am waiting on a referral to go see a WL doctor. I'm nervous! I keep gaining weight! I think in the last year I've gaine 100lbs. My blood tests show no abnormal levels to explain weight gain! It's so hard to lose the weight! My knees and back hurt all the time! My self esteem is down in the dumps! I have no energy! I feel trapped in this body of unhealthiness! I feel ashamed I've become this way! I weigh 282 and am 5'6.....45 BMI! ???? So frustrating! -
Hello Everyone! I attended an informational session back in March, but then found out that my company had an exclusion for bariatric surgery. However, my husband's insurance does not, so I've been waiting until open enrollment in November so that I can join his insurance and be covered. As that time approaches, I'm starting to do more research and read other people's stories, which is what led me here! I'm 30, no kids, live in Atlanta and I work for a national non-profit health organization. Needless to say, at just over 300 lbs, I'm the biggest one here and I feel terribly out of place with all my super health conscious co-workers. Over the past three years, my husband has lost 210 pounds without having any surgery. I tried to do it his way, but I just haven't been able to stick with it. I've lost and gained back the same 30 pounds probably 10 times. I love fashion and design, so my goal is to be able to shop at trendy stores, not at plus-size stores and to be more comfortable, both physically and socially.

Thanks Big Fred and Sweethot143! I'm still so excited! Big Fred hang in there - my advice to you (I know you didn't ask but from my experiences) regarding your 6 month PCP visits - make sure your doctor documents your weight and discussion re diet and exercise. Cigna does comb thru these notes. Oh and never give up! Thanks again and best of luck to the both of you!

I have a question. anywhere in your EOB does it say that weight loss is not covered? I want to have the lap band but i dont think they will cover. its through my husband's work and its Cigna.

Hello from NY/Ct ...i'm new to this..!!

Hi Tanya, I'm also from CT but I'm doing my surgery in Norwalk. I'm obsese but when I mention it to others I always mention that I'm a little chubby. I don't know about your doctor but I can share about what I have gone through so far... I began this process in June. I've gone through 6 months of doctor/nutritionist supervised weight loss visits. Although at each one they both said don't lose weight the bigger you are the better. I've only lost 3 pounds. I have gone through the mental health and the nutritionist appointist that go through the actual diet. Although reading here I've noticed that everyone has a different diet. My surgeon will have me on a 2 week preop diet. I also needed my gallbladder out, I did that in July. Now I feel like I've jumped through enough hoops and I'm waiting for insurance. Hopefully it will come soon. My original idea was to get the surgery done in August (I'm a teacher) as you see that didn't happen but I'm still optimistic. I'm hoping for a New Year surgery. -
Hello from Dorset in the UK...Newbie !!

Hello all, I have so many questions and I am so nervous about going for this lapband procedure - I know that it will probably let me live longer, Should all go well. I am 34 yrs old and weigh in at 315lbs - 22 stone and 6lbs. I have been overweight for most of my life. I managed to get down to 130 lbs when I was a teenager by using laxitives and throwing up. My mother is a big woman too and she developed Diabetes at 36 yrs of age - her Father had it and her sister has it two. The most awful thing happened when she got gangerene in her foot due to neuropathy in her feet - She had three toes taken away . Now just 2yrs ago they found a brain tumor and she is too ill to operate on ... I have two lovely children and a wonderful husband , I just have tried diet after diet pill after pill... I don't want to end up like my mother and grandfather and Aunty. It scares me and everytime I fail I get soooo depressed I am now being treated for depression. . . . . I am off to see my doctors tomorrow and ask if I can be put on the waiting list - She said she would help me the last time I saw her when she gave me reductil tables which worked for about 3 weeks then wore off. I am presently on the atkins diet I have lost 6lbs in one week but I know I just can't live on this diet for life and am probably going to put all the weight on when I come off. http://www.lapbandtalk.com/images/smilies/faint.gif I am very excited about the lapband but wanted to know these things? Has anyone in the UK had it ? Who is the best surgeon here? Did you too have to go on a waiting list? How long did you have to wait? I am scared of dying on the table < a bit silly I know but is true... What is the worst thing about the operation and the Best thing < obiously the weight thingee lol..... Well thank you for reading up till here. :car: I look forward to making new friends and hearing from you...... http://www.lapbandtalk.com/images/smilies/clap2.gif xxx -
They obviously weren't real friends anyway. No lose there. There are billions of people out there and I am sure you can find others who share your new interests like exercising. I lost all of mine too but starting to make new ones. Those who are interested in me and not what I can do for them.... Body image will be an issue for a long time, maybe as long as you live. But you have to remember that you are not that weight anymore and you should be proud of yourself....Keep posting your worries and we will help encourage you to see the new you and Celebrate it even if you are visually impaired. You are still the new and improved you. Enjoy it okay! Every day!

Thanks for the welcome guys! I am really really really hoping that I will be able to get banded. I have BCBS of GA (HMO). My bmi is 35.9 but when I looked at the metlife chart, I am around 100 pounds overweight if I look at the low end for my frame size. My cholesterol is slightly high and I have stopped cycling due to my weight. Is that enough to warrant banding? I might have sleep apnea since I snore like a fiend and my knees and heels hurt really bad but I have not been to the doctor about that since I know the only thing she will tell me is to lose weight. My mother has a whole host of health issues related to her weight and I am trying not to end up like her. Many of my co-workers have been banded and some of them have had to gain weight to do it. That seems a bit counter productive but if it is what you have to do???

My surgeon is Dr. Roy Schwartz and I will be banded at Capital Regional Medical Center.

Wow what a great story. It's amazing how it takes years for some of to realize how much we really need this. It took me a while to finally decide that I needed this. Talk about denial. Anyhow the important thing is that we finally did realize. Congrats on your weight loss. Keep up the good work. Remember to take pictures of your journey. 6 days and counting, until my big day. -
Hello everyone - I have my first appointment with the surgeon (Prof. Lansberg) on the 6th of October. Things are a little diffrent here, once your GP refers you to the surgeon you are pretty much done. So, I could be having surgery sometime in the very near future. I am very nervous about some of the procedures. I am wanting the lap band, but he will tell me what he thinks is best for me. I have been over weight most of my life and am ready for a big change. Just wondering what are good questions for the surgeon? Thanks, Heather
