I am 7 weeks post op and am having difficulty with vomiting after eating meat or fish. I will chew it for at least 60 seconds and even after a bite or two I will throw up everything and it tends to continue for a few hours. I grill my meat or broil it with no oils and I do not understand why I can't keep it down. I can't even do protein shakes as they make me sick so i'm living off of yogurt and i have oatmeal in the morning. My doctor put me on meds but it's making it worse. I'm not losing a ton of weight. I have to add that my surgery was a revision to 2 previous nissen fundoplications so I also had work on my esophagus . Can anyone recommend anything else I can eat to get my protein? Also, any suggestions on incorporating fish or chicken without getting sick. Ren

Not eating enough...
NikkiWorldJourney replied to DianeJarrett's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Sounds like your eating enough. I am 4 weeks and an only do 1 ounce of fish/meat re fried beans at a time. Maybe 2 oz of yogurt. I am doing 3 protien shakes a day 3-4oz each, otherwise I wouldn't get to my 70+ grams of protien a day. -
(No need to sound so snippy.) I said I eat 2 ounces of Greek yogurt in the morning, I have chicken breast for lunch, about 2 ounces, and turkey or chicken for dinner, again the same amount. Before I work out, I have about 2 ounces (maybe) of watermelon, recommended by my trainer, and I will finish the 4 oz yogurt cup before I go to bed at night, if I feel like my stomach is empty, which is often. I often switch the chicken or turkey breast for tuna, or salmon and sometimes, I eat oatmeal instead of yogurt to get some fiber. The yogurt and oatmeal, both recommended by my nutritionist to ensure I don't get constipated again. I drink water all day, mostly Crystal Light but occasionally plain water. I drink Propel during my workout and finish a bottle of it in about 1.5 hours. I just started back drinking Premier Protein shakes, I can finish 1 - 1.5 a day. My initial question was more about the empty stomach feeling and how people cope with it, how they ensure they are eating, what habits they have developed to make sure they would eat.

How is the sleeve still working after 3-5 years?
JKC2016 replied to Kym Preslar's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
It isn't snacking that is the problem, it is what we snack on. Try substituting: a carrot and a one ounce piece of cheese An apple with a tablespoon of almond butter 1/2 cup of unsweetened kefir (yogurt drink) 12 almonds and 12 mini shredded wheat squares 1/2 cup plain yogurt with 1/2 c fresh fruit 15 grams 100% whole grain crackers with 1oz cream cheese 2oz hummus with sliced fresh vegetables 1/2 oz raw nuts If you want to stop cravings, stay away from sweets and refined carbs. Stay away from all natural and artificial sweeteners. If you indulge occasionally, no problem. Just don't have the stuff in the house, and be prepared for return of cravings for a day or two. Many of us hoped we could eat whatever we wanted, just less, and lose and maintain weight. Not true for a lot of us. Good food tastes really great and feels really great. Skin, hair, energy all respond well. Do weigh, measure and track. It's key to getting and staying on track. MyFitnessPal makes it really easy. -
I'm 5 weeks out of surgery, I'm down 38 lbs and happy (I'm a slow loser who stalls). But I'm wondering, how do people overeat? I see some people even vomit. How is that possible? Honestly, I have no appetite and I can't hold much food. A 4 oz cup of Greek yogurt has to be eaten in 2 sittings, because about halfway through, I am incredibly full, to the point I feel sick. It springs up from nowhere! My proteins fill me up quickly, I can only eat 2 oz portions of everything if that much. Even a taste of rice, while I'm cooking for my BF, makes me feel like I've had a full meal. Even trying to stay hydrated is such a chore, because I feel incredibly full after a certain amount of liquid, sipped slowly. I can't imagine overeating. Am I supposed to feel more hungry? And that's another thing - I'm supposedly not eating enough? Because I don't feel hungry, sometimes during the day, I will get a pain in my stomach and realize, it is completely empty. And I didn't feel hungry, it just occurred to me that my stomach aches because it is empty and it's been hours since I have eaten. Does anyone else feel this? My nutritionist suggested small meals and maybe even a timer for eating (I do one for drinking water and Crystal light now, so I won't forget). It's the primary reason for my stall - my body is hanging on to everything I'm eating because I'm not eating enough. How did you handle this? I'd love some advice.

@atontor You look awesome. Congratulations! @gwbicster While Dr. Weiner often has interesting insights, I'm having difficulty believing head hunger equals addiction. I'm nearly three years post WLS & no longer feel head hunger. Does that mean I no longer have an addiction? Or does it mean I never really did have an addiction? I'm having a hard time saying yes to either of those questions. @Mersh You're in one of the most difficult phases of your journey. You've had surgery & now you want to eat some food you really can't handle yet. I feel for you, pal. When you're ready, consider other softer proteins like plain yogurt & then cottage cheese later. Pretty soon you'll move on to eggs, fish, chicken, pork, & beef. You can do this!

Any 2017 60'ish sleever's out there?
elle2 replied to RoseinAZ's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I was able to have soups, and basically anything that could pass through a straw (without using the straw)! I ended up having cream soups and I would add nonfat yogurt to it so it would increase my protein intake. -
When does hunger return?
s0ulfulglitz replied to chamilton0323's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
that's so crazy how every doctor and every program is a bit different but we all are working towards the same results. I started a blended diet the 2nd weeks out, if i was comfortable, but i wasn't ready yet - and 3rd and now 4th week incorporating yogurt, apple sauce, and protein shakes in. i'm going in for my month checkup to review next steps in meal planning and nutrition. keep up the great work!! -
What to eat, drink?
shazwott13 replied to northstar9148's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had surgery 2 days after you! I just started my full liquid diet today. I had my surgery in Mexico, so don't have a nutritionist. Here are the some of the things I was approved to eat this week (please note that everyone's diet is different). I was warned that tomato based products may be too acidic but that I could try them and see how I tolerate them. single grain baby cereal thinned with milk or protein shake thinned cream of wheat boiled chicken (can be seasoned) pureed with enough broth to go through through a funnel level 1 or 2 baby food (stick with fruits cuz I hear the other stuff is gross) I am actually allowed to have cottage cheese and don't have to blend it Yoplait whipped yogurt low sodium V-8 -

Pudding replied to snapy17's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hi all. I'm day 6post gastric bypass I've never felt so I'll in my life. I felt sick from the moment I woke from the operation and still do now but it is getting a bit better. I'm on my 3rd lot of antisickness tabs.. I carnt get my protein down took me 2 days to eat a yogurt. I no it will get better and it will be worth it . But if I could have got my stomach back and money I would have lol. -
I have the same problem! I can't stand eggs, or cottage cheese. I can't find lower sugar oatmeal that doesn't have cinnamon in it (I love cinnamon, but apparently my post op tummy says no), so I can't even eat that! Protein shakes make me nauseous...no matter how I make them, and I'm sick to death of yogurt with fruit it it! I am just over 4 weeks post op. I have to FORCE myself to eat. I'm having a really hard time coming up with something I can eat for breakfast. I'm 7 months out and have been struggling for a couple of months now. I ate the triple zero yogurt with fruit for so long that I can't stand the smell of the yogurt by itself anymore. I couldn't eat eggs at breakfast before surgery so I'm terrified to try them now. Unfortunately there isn't much out there that has enough protein that isn't yogurt or eggs! Occasionally I make a chicken salad and I can eat that, but it gets old after a day or two. I have given up on ever liking tuna again, once in a while I can stomach it but not often. I had been visiting the subway in the lobby of the place I work and just getting the meat that would come on a 6inch sub but even that turns my stomach some days. I'm just at a loss. Today I tried an overnight oats recipe that was higher in protein, but I'm not sure if that was a good idea. I wasn't able to eat lunch because I got extremely nauseous and had some stomach pains a couple of hours after eating it. Does anyone have any suggestions? I'd appreciate any help!

I use CELEBRATE in capsules. I rtake 2 a day. I was told if they were to bigg I could open them and sprinkle them on some applesauce or yogurt, I never had a probem with them. The capsules go down pretty good. I am 4 years out and have always taken them. I did try the Centrum chewable right after my RNY but I couldn't stand the sweetness. That is when I started taking Celebrate. Good Vitamins.

Having similar issues. Surgery is the 28th for me, too, and I also have one week to go. My program demands a high protein liquid diet. I can have sugar-free protein shakes, sugar-free popcicles, strained cream soups, broth with protein powder, and nonfat Greek yogurt. I miss chewing and I've been extremely emotional. Zh3n, it sounds like you're coping very well, so keep up with that. My first couple of months (really much longer than that, and even now at 6 months) it's a daily struggle to take in sufficient amounts of protein and liquids. The options that provide both were very helpful for me. Premier Protein ready-made shakes from Costco, bone broth (more protein than normal broth), chicken broth with pureed chicken in it (bought an immersion blender for that), and Greek yogurt have all become staples for me. The biggest challenge for me early on was that most of the options are sweet and I was craving something savory / salty. The pureed chicken in broth did it for me. Also, some mushroom soup provided almost no protein on its own, but the flavor was pretty wonderful after so many sweet protein drinks. Be well. Good luck. Hang in there!

What to eat, drink?
Stephen2 replied to northstar9148's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Premier Protein ready-made shakes (Costco) have been a very helpful tool for me. Chicken broth and bone broth were very helpful for me when trying to get a break from the consistent "sweetness" of most protein supplements. Also Greek yogurt, but stay away from formulations that contain more grams of sugar than protein. -
3 weeks post-op diet suggestions
Stephen2 replied to XRolemodel85X's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Here are some things I found to be especially helpful. Immersion blender to puree chicken meat in broth or bone broth. Greek yogurt, but watch the labels on that stuff. Aim for more grams of protein than sugar. Syggi's is a great brand around my area. Premier Protein shakes (Costco). The powder is not the same formula, but the ready-made is a GREAT tool. Resealable, secure containers, and by far the best flavor experience of the 8 or 10 types I tested. Also had some luck with pureed baby foods, but not much with protein options. If you're tired of cottage cheese, try adding applesauce, or later on some fruit (blueberries, raspberries, blackberries). Best of luck! -
Can't get protein in, HELP!
goldenbarbie replied to PlatypusPie's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I had the same problem and even severe dehydration problems up until 3/4 months post opp. Everyone's body is different and adjusts differently to the sleeve. Try premiere protein brand shakes, they are very very thin it literally taste like flavored water and it's 30g per serving. Remember you can't finish it all at once so so small yet frequent sips. In the morning, if you can try and get 16oz of water down before you eat anything. That helped me and I was in and out of the hospital for many things. I'm nearly one year post opp now and everything is fine. Haven't been to a hospital in months. Literally you just have to learn your body and what it accepts. If the premiere shakes don't work try a different form of getting protein. Egg white, yogurt, beans etc. Whatever your doctor and nutritionist allows. SW - 322 CW - 219 GW - 160 . Sleeved 12/14/16. You might try taking probiotics. Surgery is usually associated with large doses of antibiotics to prevent post-operative infection. Antibiotics kills not only the bad bacteria in the gut but also the good bacteria. Antibiotics can cause an imbalance of intestinal bacteria. If you have an imbalance of bacteria, this may increase the gas you produce after you eat. Probiotics helps to reestablish your colonies of good bacteria in you gut. Probiotics aim to improve intestinal motility and reduce intestinal fermentation and gas production. Many probiotics are readily available over the counter. Eating yogurt can also promote the growth and reestablishment of beneficial intestinal flora to help overcome bloating and gas.

I am allergic to peanuts and treenuts and I am able to eat Atkins blueberry Greek yogurt & chocolate chip protein bars.

Much better day today! 60 oz of protein from a combination of shakes, yogurt, and egg custard. Actually had an appetite and baby tummy handled it well. Still having trouble with liquids, but managed to get down 25 ounces of water and a popsicle. Feel so much better being hydrated!

Week one is over and it was hard! I craved food mentally and then physically when I developed thrush. I had no idea I had it even with all the signs like hard to swallow pills and congestion feeling, coated tong, and intolerance to ensure and protein. Two days with nothing but Powerade and water was killing me. No one speaks about the hunger and food cravings in the beginning. I had my first pre op appointment today exactly 8 days after my gastric bypass. I will say my stomach feels great not too much pain other then the thrush issue. Good heads up if you do sugar free popsicles don't do the ones with the cream back to back. I did however have to change my liquids for my last week of liquids without being able to handle the ensure. Good plus fair life milk, cream of chicken soup with milk to thin, and trop 50 with half yogurt drink are all good alternatives. Bonus I am down 15 pounds week one!!!

I have been in the dreaded "3 week stall" for about a week now, which corresponds to the time I started introducing the standard "real" foods (cottage cheese, tuna, yogurt, etc.). Are the two related? Just curious about others' experience.

Peanut butter/nuts/seeds all have good fats and some protein. Olive oil, peanut oil, and butter are my go-to cooking fats. Peanut oil handles higher temperatures. (As soon as oil starts smoking, you're damaging it). I get 70g of protein without a protein bar or shake in sight. Cottage cheese, greek yogurt, nuts, seeds, beans, meat, poultry, fish, eggs. Sample daily menu for you: Breakfast: 2 eggs, 4oz beans (21g protein) Snack: 2oz nuts or seeds (14g protein) Lunch: 4oz meat or fish (28g protein) Snack: 4oz cooked spinach plus 2-4oz cottage cheese (whatever you can fit in) (7g-13g protein) Dinner: 4oz meat or fish (28g protein) Yes, it's a LOT of food! But, you're a big guy, and I suspect your weight is stalling because you're not eating enough. Even if you don't eat this much every day, to have an occasional "splurge day", will help kick start your weight loss. I personally also take in a 4oz piece of fruit each day.. but that's optional, depending on your carb desires. (But I skip the dinner, and only have 1 egg for breakfast).
