    New to WLS

I agree with James. There can be some temporary stretching of the RNY pouch or sleeve if you over eat, but the idea that the pouch or sleeve can be permanently stretched out is urban legend based on outdated theories. What does happen is that over time, your hunger can return (this can take 5 years to happen with RNY and 3 years or so with Sleeve). The stomach capacity, however, remains where it was at the time of surgery and you still get full with small portions. People can then defeat the benefits of surgery by eating bad foods more frequently, slider foods (milk shakes, potato chips etc.) or by over eating (which ends up resulting in stacking food in your esophagus--which is bad for many reasons). Surgery is just a tool so if you don't use the first couple of years post-op to change your bad lifestyle habits, weight regain is possible (even likely). As for the bounce, that's a normal part of the process. The surgery changes your set point weight, so your body thinks it's suppose to weight 190 pounds instead of 300. This is called the set point theory--which is how your body maintains a certain weight. When you're on your way down the scale post up, you'll likely drop below your new set point if you follow the new dietary guidelines so you might hit 170 or 180 at your lowest. You'll then gain some weight back and stabilize at your new set point (190). In truth, if you follow the guidelines and do your part, you probably aren't "regaining" weight in the first year or two post op. Your body is just adjusting for your new set point. If you don't follow the guidelines and you eat the the wrong foods, your weight game can be genuine and that's issue. If you're working with a nutritionist (which will be required as part of post-op care), you'll know if you're going out of bounds with the food. If you have RNY, you'll probably get that info every time you have a dumping syndrome episode.

    Second Thoughts

Try not to put too much pressure on yourself. Remember the first 6 weeks are about healing not weight loss. It is not uncommon not to lose much at first. I really didn't lose much the first three months while they were adjusting my band but once they hit my sweet spot the weight is really coming off.

    Shapewear/Binders

I wore a binder for about a week after surgery- it really helped keep me from moving in ways that would cause the incisions to hurt. I don't know if shapewear will help your body go back to where you want it. I bought some because some of my skin has gotten saggy as I've lost weight. I pretty much only wear it if I'm putting on something form-fitting. Krista
  5. It is my first day on the Ketogenx liver reduction diet and I am pumped. I know it's early, but I am so excited that my surgery is coming soon. My PA thought I'd only have to do 2 weeks with all the weight I'd lost, but the doctor said 4 at the results visit, which is probably better for me in the long run anyway. My surgery is December 11 so I have less than a month to go. I'm just so excited I had to share
  6. Im 4 weeks post op- my ultimate goal is about 70 pounds I havent lost a thing yet- from pre op maybe a couple pounds that were gained during and post surgery- in fact I think I gained a couple more because Im on vacation. I got one fill of 3 cc and the nurse said that probably wont restrict me much but its a start. Im as hungry as I ever was... Are you guys doing a lot of behavior modification? Becasue I think Immaybe even eating worse then before bec I know my food days will be shortlived. Any advice? PS Is it possible that eating wrong can reverse the effects of the band?
  7. You're not alone! It's hard, even when you KNOW that it's healthy to gain some weight. I'm at 27 weeks and have managed to keep my weight gain to about 13 pounds so far. That said, my doc's visit yesterday was the first where I saw a big jump-- 5 pounds in a month. It was hard. I'm also looming up on 250, which is another mental block. I started at 322, so I KNOW I'm still WAY thinner than I was. For me, it helped to continue to plan meals and menus and workout as my body allows (starting to run into limitations there.) I don't obsessively count calories, though I check periodically to see that I'm not WAY off base. I've stuck to a moderately bandster friendly diet and have intentionally enjoyed some non-bandster favorites that don't work when my band is tight. HOWEVER, I'm eating more things like big leafy salads (light on the dressing) and raw veggies that I have trouble with otherwise. I'm enjoying a few more whole grain breads and other HEALTHY options that would otherwise give me trouble. My latest obsession is a broccoli coleslaw recipe from an online blog--I eat it by the bowl, sometimes as lunch itself. By enjoying the healthy stuff that doesn't work with the band, I feel like I'm getting a treat in exchange for the weight gain. The sugary/fatty stuff doesn't make me feel good, so I avoid it. It's hard. And depressing. And crazy-making. You're not at ALL unreasonable for finding the prospect of weight gain terrifying. But you DID THE RIGHT THING by getting the unfill! Don't forget that a good 20-25 pounds of pregnancy weight gain is baby-related, NOT counting maternal fat gain! That doesn't mean you'll be 20 pounds lighter the day after babe is born, but you'll be on your way. AND you have your band. It WILL work after baby is here! Good luck to you. There are lots of successful bandsters who have had babies, lost the weight, and gone on to reach goals. You can be one too!
  8. I am having a really hard time and just wanted to express how I was feeling to people that understand. I'm almost 6 weeks pregnant and couldn't be happier, except for the weight gain thing. I haven't finished losing my weight and right now I'm terrified. I had to get completely unfilled, no morning sickness, but it's as if the moment I conceived my band became too tight. I was getting stuck with EVERYTHING I ate. I have already gained 4 pounds. I know that doesn't sound like a lot, but I'm freaking out. I have been so hungry, I wake up needing to eat something. his morning I had an anxiety attack and I can't do this, it's not healthy for me (or the baby)to be so stressed about my weight. I'm trying to relax and calm down.... How did you guys accept this, or did you? :smile2:

    Felt funny between friends

Don't feel funny....As we know first hand what that is like. If they ask you about your weight loss certainly motivate them into getting more healthy by eating better and working out and if they interested in wls give them some advise.

    Fear of Chickening Out

They way you describe your eating patterns sorta sounds like you have a lot going on besides sticking to a diet/new way of eating/making better choices. My daughter has a binge eating disorder that she sees a psychiatrist for & takes medication for. You should get this checked out so that you will be successful in your weight-loss journey. Weight-loss surgery can only do so much. We all are subject to relapses and putting the weight back on! Toodles, Rue
  11. VLP is right. Regular aerobic activity is essential to losing weight. Get lots of lean Protein. My personal "secret" is green leafy veggies like kale and spinach. They are loaded with nutrients. Steer clear of simple carbs like crackers and chips, because they will stall weight loss. I also avoid processed foods, and try to eat "clean" most of the time. Good Luck!

    How much is enough??

I think you need to eat more too, purely for your future health. That sort of intake would generally place you at risk of malnutrition, osteoporosis, stuff like that, you really cant eat that little long term without supervision, especially doing as much exercise as you are doing. You're doing more than enough. You've lost an awful lot of weight, personally, I think yoiu're just going to have to be patient. I found the same thing, I just kept on going at a moderate level - eating well, exercising regularly and that last 10lb took me a year to lose, there'd be nothing for months and months and then suddenly 3 or 4 lb would go overnight sort of thing. But I did lose it in the end.

    How much is enough??

Yes, not enough calories. Also the trainers at the gym I go to say not to do weight training every single day. They advise that for optimum results, lift weights every other day.. this gives your muscles time to rest and repair the tiny tears that lifting causes. It's fine to do Cardio daily though. One other suggestion.. I too have lost quite a bit of weight and now the scales are barely moving. I decided to start taking my measurements monthly. While the scales are somewhat disappointing .. the inches are coming off. A dress I couldn't wear in May, I could wear in June.. and I hadn't lost all that much. Congrats on being so dedicated to working out. I think you just need to change things up a bit. If you can afford it, consult with a trainer.

  17. Hi, Pickles; Sorry you are having problems. But, it does happen. You know, it’s interesting you have been able to lose weight without restriction. It does happen, though, for several reasons. One is the Placebo effect. Just the knowledge that you have the device inside of you gives you a resolve to try a little harder. It works the other way sometimes, too. People will have the band and think IT will do all the work and they end up eating more than they did before. Also, it might be that you are getting a very subtle restriction that you cannot feel, really, but it is sending the signals to your brain that you are “full” or “fullER”. In addition, you might be one of those few that have the “Hunger abatement” mechanism in action that the band theoretically provides, but does not often materialize. AND, we certainly cannot rule out good old fashioned hard work on your part! There are people who go through their Band experience with virtually no restriction or very little restriction and lose weight. As I have said before, the band experience is VERY individual….people rarely experience it the same as anyone else. So, HOWEVER you are doing it, congratulations! As far as the leakage, well, that does happen. But I was a little confused by your comment suggesting that you will have to pay for the repair. Will your insurance Pay for it, or are you self-pay? And, because it was not your fault, I would suggest that you have a very strong case for having the Surgeon absorb some if not all of the expense of the re-install. And, if it was a faulty band then the Manufacturer might bear some of the responsibility. These things are very tricky, and there is a lot of “pass-the-buck” between doctors and the other parties involved. But, based on what you have said here, I would really push HARD for the surgeon or the Band Manufacturer to foot the bill for at least some of this. Do you have insurance? Please let us know what happens with this….I would think that this would be of great interest to those people having similar problems. And congratulations on your loss thus far…..keep up the great work! S.

    Feel Like Giving Up

If you are working out a lot, you may be gaining muscle and losing fat and that would cause you not to lose weight on the scale. But you will look better and be healthier.

    Tokyo sleevers?

How much weight have you lost now?
  20. Thankssssssss you won't believe what the posts from you and everyone did to me last time, I honestly was crying when I read them, I was so desperate, so depressed and thought that my weight is stuck and will not lose even 1 lb. Now I am more encouraged and will go back to gym I miss my coach and everyone there, they used to support me a lot. But I am the naughty girl I am just stubborn and I keep giving myself excuses for not going back to gym. Now I will have more control on my life, watch, weigh, and register as I used to do all what I eat. I will go to the gym again. I must lose the 37lb till August. Also I want to have a photo of me before and after, I just wish I can do this like all the people I see having a before and after pictures. I don’t like anyone to take a photo of me, I just wish to have nice photos of me, and wear whatever I want without having any worries. I have this dream, I hope I will make it happen. In God’s will.

    Feel Like Giving Up

I am also losing the weight somewhat slowly after the initial 20 pounds. I have lost 32 pounds since starting the 2 week liquid pre-diet - that was September 12th. That's 10 and a half weeks. My doctor thought I should have lost more. But that is still an overall average of about 3 pounds a week. If I even lose 1.5 pounds a week after a year I will have lost 78 pounds. That would put me down from 240 to 168. Another 26 weeks would make that 39 pounds more putting me at 129 pounds and under my doctor's goal of 130. Today is a really great milestone. I was able to get up and dance for 2 songs. I danced to the video on my laptop to Rolling Stones - Brown Sugar (3:33min) and then my boyfriend put on Cyndie Lauper's Girls Just Want to Have Fun (3:54) and I danced to that too. . I have not done that in at least 4 years. We are going to the park in a minute. I'm going to walk around the park. It's a big loop around several soccer fields that informal groups go to play "futbol". If anyone in Houston reads this and would like to form a walking group I would be interested. Or if someone wants to meet up to dance or ride bicylces - or swim. If you are interested message me and I will send you my phone number.

    Carbs or No Carbs

I believe "good carbs" are necessary in limited quantities. You want to get them from whole grains, fruit, veggies, dairy. Glucose (what your body easily turns carbs into) is the only nutrient your brain can use. Personally, I walk a middle ground between very low carb and what my nut says (she says 130 carbs a day). I take in about 60 carbs a day and have pretty steadily been loosing 2-3 pounds a week. Find what works for you. I believe calories in and calories out is the main issue as far as weight loss. Best wishes on your journey!

    Restriction no more

I am with you. Feeling no constriction but have only had 1 fill. Next is this coming Thursday. Bad thing is I have major knee surgery the following Tuesday and will not be mobile for 6/8 weeks. Praying this next fill keeps me from gaining while I'm down.
  24. So I'm transferring insurances (to Oxford liberty) and their requirements for the sleeve is to have a BMI above 40 or if below have major health issue. Now I've been pre diabetic 2x's now and have PCOS. My weight has been up and down like crazy since the beginning of my 6month journey. Speaking with my dr's office my insurance does not consider being pre diabetic a major health issue or my PCOS. I'm starting to get nervous about getting approved. Anyone else been in the same boat?? Also does anyone know if they go with your starting BMI from when you started or where you at, at the end of your supervised weigh ins?

    I m kinda worried

I've had three fills since August 11th and I'm down 52 lbs. My doctor says that it may take several more fills to get to the right spot. I don't think I'm too far off the mark as I do feel somewhat of a small restriction now. Hang in there and be happy that you have lost so much weight already. It will come. Just be patient.
