  1. Okay, I'm 2 yrs 2months post op..... and Friday last week I had to be completely unfilled, had 5cc out of my band.....I had the "green zone" since April last year, until, for some unknown reason either got stuck or other and started getting acid reflux and couldn't even keep down water.... So had an emergency unfill. The stuck problem and acid reflux has gone but I have no restriction at all.......and NO SELF CONTROL.... it's like I've been let off the leash and 'Over eating'...because I can! I want a fill ASAP! Can't be seen until 12th July and I'm dreading weight gain ..., have gained a couple of pounds so far but it's scary that I'm on the slippery slope of becoming out of control , I keep telling myself NO "think portion size" but it's so hard not to eat more.....I'm weak....stupid and know what I'm doing is madness after losing 185 pounds and nearly at my goal weight too...it's like I'm a naughty child, all out to cause havoc! .... Help! Anyone else had a complete unfill and struggling to get back on track.. I've got my fitness pal but I can't do any exercise at the moment due to recently having a slipped disc...I don't want to ruin all the good I've/my band has done.....really down and desperate!

    weight gain directly after surger

I weighed myself when I went to bed after being discharged and was up 3 pounds. It dropped right off within another couple of days as all of the fluids that I'd been pumped full of via IV worked through my body. Visiting nurse said between that and edema from inflammation, it is very common to see a momentary weight gain right after surgery.
  3. You do realize that pre-op & post-op weight gain/loss is expected right? I see a lot of people on here concerned with their gain/loss when it is completely irrelevant. I honestly don’t know why anyone is concerned or is even keeping track at this point when the real concern should be preparing/recovering. Really the only time anyone should be paying attention to the scale is when the transition to solid food has been made & even then results shouldn’t be expected immediately. Before I had surgery I devoured all the water I could & after surgery received god knows how many bags of fluids as well as the fluids I had started drinking. I don’t have a scale at home & honestly don’t care to. I’ll leave it to doctors appointments or the gym to see what I weigh & even then there’s no rush. All that should matter really is that in the next 6 months to a year I hope to see 100 pounds less of me than a year before & everyone else should be hopeful to see the same.

    Rude Comments!

Yea, unfortunately, women can be mean and jealous! I don't like this aspect of our kind!! I have too have experienced this first hand ... I've told the story before, but I will tell again (now I find it amusing). Just after my sleeve - nearly 2 yrs ago - a friend of mine saw how I was losing weight. She had just had a baby and was caring extra weight. OUt of the blue, like so many other stories, she became a diet and exerise 'expert'. She worked out 7 days a week and hardly ate a thing - her mother had her two kids for her to do this btw. She kept telling me how many inches she was losing, howmany pounds she had lost and what size she was. This would be followed by a half hearted question about my own weight loss. She knew about my sleeve. She used me as competition. She couldn't stand the thoought of me being smaller than her... I have ALWAYS been the biggest in our friendship group. She even gave me her clothes that were 'too big' for her, these included several maternity trousers. She explained this by stating that: 'I know your problem area is your tummy, so these are perfect!' Implying that I looked pregnant! Anyway, fast forward two years... here I am currently maintaining at my 72lb weight loss and I fit nicely into a UK14. My friend however, has put a lot of weight back on and is now a good 14lbs if not more heavier than me and at least one clothing size bigger. I have not said ANYTHING about her weight gain. I have been tempted to pay back her back handed compliments, but I am being the bigger -metaphorically of course - person! Try to ignore comments with negative undertones and outright negative elements... this is your experience. This is your time to get healthy, fit and happy.... bugger everyone else!! Good luck to you ... =]
  5. Hey fellow sleevers, I've just started thinking about the fact that I am on Estrodiol for hormone replacement (total hysterectomy at 33) and also Effexor for mild depression due to hormonal changes & to help with hot flashes. BOTH of these are known to have side effect of weight gain which is no doubt why I was able to put on over 100lbs in less than a year (that's way faster than normal). So just wondering from personal experience if weight loss has still been good if on either of these or has it not even been an issue. Also have Hypothyroidism which didn't happen till after Hyster also..... Thanks for any experience....

    Leasons Learned

Surely though with the small amount of pizza and Chinese you say you have had would not result in weight gain ? Just my view .
  7. I go for my 6wk follow-up tomorrow and go back to work next Friday. As the title hints at I work 12hr night shifts and was wondering if anyone else on the forum works an unconventional schedule? There have been years of study concerning the detrimental effects of working against your circadian rhythm one of those is weight gain and cortisol levels. I'm hoping to hear from those folks who are willing to share tips, hints, and struggles. Ideally not working night shift is the best but not feasible for me nor do I want to work dayshift. Thanks in advance.

    Self Image

I've been "fat in the head" my entire life. I have not, however, always been fat; that came in adulthood. While I accept responsibility for my weight as an adult, I do believe that irresponsible adults in my childhood set the stage for this. Being fat was such a part of my self-image that the weight gain I experienced with children (and after) was very difficult for me to actually see. When I did see it clearly, I was able to lose. Maintenance was a real issue, though. So now I'm working not only on my weight, but also my head.
  9. I was afraid of what would happen if I didn't get banded. At 43 years old I managed to avoid a lot of health conditions that run rampant in my family. My eating and weight gain was out of control and it was starting to affect my quality of life. My mobility was at stake and I was afraid of what my life would be like at 50.
  10. Thats not to bad, my doc is 200 just to walk thru the door ... I am soo sick of the pain, getting sick and the heartburn I can hardly deal anymore. I have Poly cystic ovarian disease to and I was reading some posts that explain or have the same symptoms I do ( weight gain, major hair loss, acne and abnormal hair growth). Does anyone know if there is special meds other than birth control or diet for this?

    Need Some Advice!!

Sounds like you have what we call "soft calorie syndrome." It happens when your band is too tight and you end up favoring soft, often high-calorie foods (like ice cream) that provide little or no satiety rather than the solid, healthy food that provides satiety and gives your body the fuel it needs. If you can hardly even drink tea in the morning, I really think you need a slight unfill. I'd make an appt. to talk to your surgeon about this soon so the two of you can come up with an action plan and nip the weight gain in the bud.

    Champix without putting on weight

I've never smoked but I heard those pills can cause some crazy nightmares, but I know lots of people that they worked for. But is it the pill causing weight gain or substituting food in place of cig?
  14. New to this forum and I just wanted to pop in and say this particular thread was very encouraging to me. I had my lap band surgery Dec. 16, 2010, so 5 mos. ago and I've only lost a net of about 18# so far, which I lost by Feb., so nothing really since Feb. despite two fills, the second being just last month. I'm still eating more than a cup of food but if I don't, I get hungry quickly between meals. Also, I have Hashimoto's hypothyroid with a gluten intolerance so there are some things I don't eat anymore at all and with my autoimmune condition, it's advised that I don't "graze," but instead simply eat three meals a day and one snack. I've been doing really good with that so I think it's just my particular condition that's going to make it slower for me. But I'm only 5'1" and I'd LOVE to be in a 14/16 right now and out of my snug 18s. I was in 20s that were getting tight pre-surgery! But I'm remaining hopeful that this will finally work. If anything else, it's forced me to really be careful about what I eat and that I have to take an extra Aleve or two to get through my workouts because of my really, really bad knees. Oh, and just a few days after I started exercising again I was diagnosed with asthma so now that I'm on two inhalers, my workouts are going more smoothly because I can breathe. But anyway, don't lose faith! You're doing great!! And remember, stress can cause weight gain so if you stress over it, you may impede your progress. I know that from experience. That's what I told my husband too, so I haven't measured myself and I've stopped literally counting calories. I'm eating healthier than I ever have and I'm not over-eating, and now I'm exercising regularly - 1 hr. a day so I think my body just needs to catch up to what I'm doing. Glad to have found you all here!

    Banded 5/5/09-bandster hell

I am scheduled to have my surgery June 8th. My doctor's office requires us to go through a 'nutrition class' that explains how our diet should change after the lap band and what to do to make the liver as healthy as possible before the surgery. I was told that there would be weight loss the first 10 - 14 days after surgery, due to swelling. However, once the swelling goes down, I was told to expect some weight gain and not to let it get me down. One the fills start, the weight gain will start to slow and weight loss will begin once restriction begins to be felt. I was also told I wouldn't feel as restricted via fills as I will from the swelling. They also made a point of telling us that we are responsible for our weight loss. The lap band won't negate the calories in pizza and ice cream, LOL! I'm not saying that your weigh gain is due to improper dieting. It's most likely from the swelling going away. Good luck and don't try to beat the numbers on the scale. I limit myself to one weigh a week. If I weigh myself more, I try to beat the scale and end up sabotaging myself ... not good.

    Embarrassed to go to doctor

You're not the 1st patient who gained back 10 lbs. Nip the weight gain in the bud NOW, before it gets to 20 lbs and more. Your Dr. is there to help you, and get you back on track, not criticize a patient. Good luck, you got this !
  17. Weight loss is a different animal as the years pass. Actually experiencing weight gain, weight holding on, and slow weight loss may be hard for newer people to understand. It's a great that you are posting this topic. Yes, get with your team to get the professional advice and confirm or rule out medical issues. The bariatric plan that once worked may not work for you now. it will be trial and error to find the calories and macros that get your body in weight loss mode. This will be specific to your body physiology. Weight loss at years out is not a one size fits all. It is fine tuning your diet to find where your body loses weight. To find the calories and macros that work: Use your food log. If your body is carb sensitive lower your carbs. If your not losing at a certain calorie levels. Raise/lower the calories. Spread out meals a day. Start with three adjust it to four, five six. How you fuel your body is key. Whole foods, Keto, intermittent fasting, vegetarian diets. It still gets down to your calories and macros on any diet plan.
  18. I didn’t gain any weight while in the hospital. But then again I was clearly not overly hydrated as most people are because I had to go back and get fluids. My clinic did tell me not to weigh myself for the first two weeks though and I think that was probably because of fluid and inflammation causing weight gain.

    Depressed please help!

I haven't reached goal, but I plan on tracking my food pretty much for the rest of my life. I'd advise you to go back to tracking and measuring so you can get back in control of your portions and fat/carb/protein and calorie counts so you can see where you're going off track. You may only need to do this for a few weeks as a reminder/reset. If the weight keeps creeping up, then you could do a 5 day pouch test to go back to the beginning. It is very easy, and I did do it once already when my carb levels started creeping up (it knocked them back down and got rid of my carb cravings). http://5daypouchtest.com/plan/theplan.html Don't be depressed; you have options. If you let the sad overwhelm you, then you end up doing nothing. Use this weight gain as motivation to get back on track!

    Carb Debate (Friendly)

There are plenty of Protein drinks without carbs or with very few- look around for them! In fact, a Protein Drink with 30 grams of carbs should NEVER be on our plans- that is a lot of sugar. I've never seen one with that many unless it is for weight gain, like Ensure. Ditto vitamins- tha bariatric vitamins generally do not have a lot of carbs- mine have <1. My Calcium chews do have 4 each but I know you can find calcium without carbs too. It is REALLY helpful to log your food every day- I use fatsecret.com and there are lots of other good ones. I have mine set to show fat, carbs, net carbs, protein, and calories. I log every single thing including vitamins, etc. It helps you feel like you are in control and accountable. Also remember that post-op your capacity will be sooooo little- that lowers your ability to get carbs in.
  22. (Hi Mary: We are the same age and I always like to check in with woman our age because I think it's a challenge with menopausal weight gain that comes with this time. How are you doing? Are you winning the battle? Glad your palpitations went away. I started getting them a year ago and was very scared as I lost a sister to a heart attack. It turns out my palpitations are yet another symptom of fluctuating hormones. I am pre banded but have are almost there just battling with my insurance company but still have so many questions.) I am doing well. I had my surgery on August 19th and since then have lost 20 pounds. I would like to lose 50 more. I was on one week of Clear liquids then 3 weeks of full liquids and next Wednesday I make the transition to real food. I have an appt for a tentative first fill on 9/30. Except for the bruising and soreness at the incision sites, I have not had any other trouble. I also lost a sister at a young age..8 years ago this month - she was 40 and I was 41. She was in a car accident. Good luck battling that insurance company....I see you being persistant with the appeals. Hang in there. Mary

    no restrictions

Totally normal and it's to be expected. Most people, myself included, didn't start noticing restriction until my 4th & 5th fills. Especially if your doctor is conservative with your fills like mine was/is. A weight gain is common too. Try not to get discouraged. Start making good habits and choices now. You're REALLY early in the game and I PROMISE the weight will start falling off before you know it!!! I was where you were back in August, September, October. I thought for sure the band wasn't going to work...but everyone told me to hang in there and be patient!! They were right!!!!!!!! Best of luck!!!!!!
  24. Have you thought of revision to VSG or another surgery? Unfortunately without restriction, it'll be very difficult for you.I know because I was one of the unlucky ones that if there is an extreme side effect with a WLS, I would fall in that category... Lapband (erosion) and VSG (severe gerd, esophagitis). Surgeons have stressed that it was no fault of my own. It just happens. I finally had a revision to RNY and feel so much better. Tracking food helped me before my revisions. While I had some weight gain, it wasn't too much. Looking at the list of food in my food diary always helps me realize it is head hunger vs real hunger. Gastric Bypass weight regain

I'm 2 years 1 month out. I reached my goal of 150 in August. I am at 146.6 ATM. I've read it can happen 2 to 3 years out. I read weight gain can average at or around 20 lbs. I'm not sure if this is true or not.
