    Gastric Sleevr Vs. Bypass

Thank you so much to all of you for your replies. My consult is next week. I hope Dr. approves me for bypass as that is my primary preference but I know many Dr's push for sleeve nowadays. How about eating high fat low carb? Since high cat curbs your hunger and keeps u feeling fuller longer, can any of you eat traditional keto now years later? Or you still have to keep the fats low? Sent from my SM-N986U using BariatricPal mobile app
  2. Yes, I had what is called the Keto Flu. Electrolytes help to curb this. I drank the broth of Progresso soup (strained out the rest) and that helped significantly. Good luck and this will get better shortly.

    I’m ALWAYS cold

Same here, two weeks post op and cannot get warm enough either. My doctor has me on a "keto" style diet and said cold hands & feet are to be expected while your body is in ketosis. It will balance out over time so for now, layer up and stay warm the best you can without a blow dryer.

    Food Before and After Photos

🤣 Walmart is one of my least favorite places to go. I usually just do a pick up order. Bread is in the freezer by other frozen keto foods in my store. Kind of crumbly on the texture, but I think it tastes good!

    Food Before and After Photos

I found a keto bread (1 net carb and 30 kcals per slice) that tastes good! Dinner tonight... I ate the small half of the grilled cheese sandwich and all of the tomatoes with avocado. Yummy!

    Food Before and After Photos

For lunch today I made some avocado toast on keto bread and topped it with chunk light tuna. Just used fresh lemon juice and salt and pepper for the tuna. I was super hungry and made two but one did the job.

    Food Before and After Photos

Yesterday’s lunch: Turkey sandwich with fat free cheese on Aldi’s keto bread and a pear. Dinner was the same salad 🥗
  8. Following this- I’m having the same problem right now and backtracking on what I’ve changed. Today my abdomen was so painful and distended I couldn’t work out and that makes me super cranky. I did try this new keto cereal called Catalina crunch that I’m in love with but I can’t take the gas and change in BMs. I’ve not had issue with anything I eat since surgery- bah humbug

    I'm doing something wrong

That week three stall hits almost everybody - it doesn't mean you're doing anything wrong. It seems to be the body taking some time to adjust to the surgery and the major change in how you eat. I wouldn't worry about comparing yourself to those who are eating less because a lot of things go into how we metabolize food: your age, activity level, previous dieting history (the more you've dieted in the past, the better your body is at adjusting your metabolism to compensate), your overall health, etc. If the scale is still moving downward then your calories are probably fine. As you continue to drop weight, there may come a time when you need to cut calories because the smaller we get, the less food we need. But for now, you're losing weight, you're hitting your nutritional goals and hydration goals, so there doesn't seem to be any need to arbitrarily limit yourself to 500 or 600 calories a day. Just stay the course. Edit to add: I went back to look at one of my early days when I ate around 600 calories. I'm a little weird in that I rarely eat a full meal, it's usually mini-meals throughout the day. Below is what I ate that day. The Evolve is a protein shake, the Tillamook is a cheese snack pack, the Kitu is a keto-friendly coffee drink and I think the rest is self-explanatory. I wasn't restricting calories, this was just what I could eat at that point (I eat 800-900 calories a day now).
  10. Happy new year everyone. May 2021 be the best year YET! More or less this has been my meals: 7am Protein shake 10 am one Scrambled egg with milk this makes it soft 12 2 oz of protein sometimes I’ll have a little veggie or mash 3 snack like cottage cheese, string cheese or keto friendly snacks 6 2 oz protein sometimes I’ll have a veggie or mash 8 protein shake Water in between meals and snack If I’m hungry before bed I’ll usually add a scrambled egg
  11. That was my concern as well for 2 last years - after a multitude of mindless diets, meal plans and reckless food attitude I was absolutely sure my metabolism is in ruins. Until recently I managed to finally measure it with a doctor and have learnt that my basal metabolic rate is in fact 2700-2800 /day. Stalls may occur while the body shifts from one energy mode to another, while being in stress, some environmental issues etc etc. In fact IF might help to pass the stall. If 16-8 doesn't work after 2 weeks, try 16-8 + low carb / keto diet - just to see what works best. It doesn't mean you have to keep going on IF+keto, you'll just pass the stall phase.

    Weight Gain A Week In?

Congrats on your surgery. Whoo hoo. It always surprises me the different post surgical diets people are given. I wasn’t on puréed foods until week 5. Follow the plan you were given but don’t be surprised if something on the plan upsets your tummy - just avoid it. As Gradycat said take it slowly. And if you feel you’re struggling, never be afraid to go back a step. Potatoes are a starch which provide energy but if you don’t use that energy it will be converted to fat. The same with all carbs. This is why many of us are told to avoid them during our weight loss phase. Plus the fat you add when you mash them isn’t the best. They weren’t on my post surgical diet from either my dietician or my surgeon. I still avoid potatoes at 19.5 months out as they tend to sit in my tummy & consume very few carbs (except for whole or multigrain crackers or rolled oats). My 2.5week pre surgery diet was keto but all the reading I did & conversations with my dietician suggested keto was good as a kick start but because of the high fat not good long term. Don’t worry too much about fluctuations. Fluid retention, constipation, etc. will up the number on the scales. Plus you know sometimes it’s just our bodies. We can eat & drink exactly the same thing one day to the next but can gain or lose. As long as the your general weight loss trend is going down you’re doing well. (Ignore when you have a stall of course.😁) Good luck on your journey.

    Weight Gain A Week In?

Yeah, I think I am going to stay away from carbs. Has the keto diet worked for you?

    Weight Gain A Week In?

According to research ive done on the keto diet suggests that having carbs increases the craving for carbs. Not medical advice.

    Digesting fat

I had bypass 22 months ago. I have never been able to eat high amounts of fat, even before surgery. A keto diet would kill me for sure! But since surgery, fat tolerance was even less at first. I have gradually been able to add more fat into my diet, but fat malabsorption has been evident since the beginning. It was most noticeable by light colored stools that float. They are more normal colored now, but still "floaties." I think I eat a lot of fat in the nuts, peanut butter, and seeds I consume, along with a small avocado nearly every day. But I find myself sort of craving fat sometimes. However, even when I try to eat more of it, I think it just goes right on through. My fat soluble vitamin levels have always been fine, and I will have those tested again in February. I am also going to talk to the Dietician about this, because if I crave fat, that must mean I am not absorbing what my body needs. That is the only malabsorption issue I think I have had with the bypass.

Surgery for someone with no health issues

Hi, it looks like you have gotten alot of responses, but I thought I'd add mine to the mix. I am 42, 5'11 and was at the beginning 334lbs. When I scheduled my first appointment with my dr, they sent out a packet and it specifically pointed out calling my insurance to make sure that bariatric/weight loss stuff was covered. I called my insurance and they asked me if I had diabetes, and I said no. They said without being diabetic, it wouldn't be covered. <Insert tears and breakdown here> I was so frustrated because my first memories are of being fed diet jello, sugar free kool-aid, things like that, I have always been the chubby kid. I did richard simmons deal a meal, jenny craig, weight watchers, calorie restriction, keto.......i lost some weight, but always gained that but more back. I called my drs office and asked them if this is true and what other questions I should be asking. I have no 'comorbidities' aside from being morbidly obese and have been obese pretty much my entire life. I called back and talked to another agent who asked about diabetes again, then about high blood pressure and sleep apnea. I have none of them. Eventually they told me that if the doctor decided that my BMI put me int he morbidly obese category and that I had tried other diets etc and had a long history of being unable to lose weight, they would approve it. In the end, I had to go through my entire history of what diets/plans/meds I had tried, my weight history, etc and I was approved. I had my bypass surgery on 12/18/2020. I hope you are able to get it approved because it is frustrating. I know what would be waiting for me if I didn't get this weight off now, all of the comorbidities that they ask about, and i am hopeful that with this tool, I will be able to avoid all that crap. Best of luck to you and happy holidays <3

    November 2020 sleevers

My wife and I had our surgery 11/11. We were told by our doctor to be a bit more aggressive at our 2 week appointment in regards to what we eat and we have been adding back foods at a reasonably quick rate. Yesterday my wife and I shared a two taco meal at Rubio's as they have Keto-style cheese wraps instead of the tortillas and we had shrimp tacos and saved the beans for later. We only had about 3/4 of the taco each but it was amazing that we have done so well to be able to eat shrimp already at 6 weeks. Our doctor also wanted to wean us off of protein shakes by 8 weeks, and if my protein calculations are correct, we should be just about there. As for weight loss, I am down 30lbs and my wife is down 25lbs since surgery. We both dropped 19 and 18lbs additionally during our preop. I am down 50lbs and she is down 43lbs since October 27th. Overall, I would say at this phase (the Honeymoon period) we are doing what we can to make this a success. We are trying to take photos as much as we can to show the difference. Our cloths are quite loose and I know we are going to have to downsize them fairly soon.

    MAY 2020 Sleevers

I am 1 lbs from my original goal weight, buttttttttt I've changed my goal weight to 130 lbs. Height: 5'5" SW: 192 lbs CW: 136 lbs GW: (was 135lbs) 130lbs ** I am only wanting to go to 130 lbs so I can have 5 lbs to lose and gain...and still feel comfortable. I am a size 4 in pants and small/medium in tops! I only lose about 1 lbs per month since late September though, but I also discovered keto treats (sugar-free candy/cookies) which have a good amount of calories. I am trying to kick that habit though, so I can get back on track. It hasn't made me gain anything -- I am still losing just VERY slow now. My family is having lasagna for Xmas. I am thinking of cheating for the day. I cheated on Thanksgiving & gained a pound, but then lost it by the next day (so I am not even sure I gained a pound from it?)... I had two scoops of mashed potatoes, 2 scoops of dressing and 2 scoops of corn casserole. Hope everyone is doing good.
  20. Someone said in one of the groups I am in - that if you don't take calcium supplements.. you could lose your teeth. Not sure how true that is. I already take calcium though and I am VERY good with my oral hygiene since the surgery.. since I get that nasty "keto breath" or whatever it is when you don't have a lot of carbs. Now I am brushing my teeth WAY more per day than I used to, ESPECIALLY with having to wear a mask because of Covid.
  21. I tried keto protein powder is that okay with a liquid diet for preop

  22. I think for me it is difficult because I was never a huge bread, potato or rice eater. I also did not feel heard nor comfortable with my NUT. I have now incorporated keto friendly carbs and every other day almonds in my diet. My weight lose has not increased meaning I am still averaging about 1 kilo per week. I workout 6 days a week. I am still looking for ways to improve my weight speed but am also trying not to allow myself to become too frustrated by this.
  23. Very odd. A few different thoughts on this. With the smaller volumes of food you are eating now, I am wondering if it could be related to the proportion of sugar vs. other nutrients. Conversely, I did keto a few years ago and my A1C went up. My NUT said very low carb diets can increase insulin resistance and cause increases in blood sugar. It is probably a good idea to discuss with your surgeon and NUT. Please keep us posted on what they say. 💕 I was diabetic pre-WLS with a 6.5 A1C. I have only had one set of labs since surgery, at about 2.5 months and my A1C was down to 5.6. I stopped my metformin when I started my pre-op diet. I am super happy to no longer be diabetic and will be interested to see what my numbers are now.
  24. I had five incisions in line with my belly button. They were small 10-15mm. They healed over a couple of weeks. I used bio oil too & now I have to look hard to see the scars: they’re little faint lines. Yes, you’ll have saggy skin. It stretched out carrying your weight. Factors like your age, gender, genetics, how long you were at your highest weight, how overweight you were all impact how much sagging you’ll have. As catwoman7 said saggy skin is better than being obese & unhealthy & you can have skin removal. I didn’t have much loose skin when I reached my goal weight but I do have more on my upper inner thighs & upper arms now that I’ve lost more. I just don’t wear short shorts or strappy or strapless tops. I’m just wearing ordinary cotton hipster briefs under this dress. Oh, & my breasts are pretty deflated. Walking is excellent post surgery. Start walking at the hospital to help get rid of the gas they fill your abdomen with during surgery. Your surgical team will probably advise when you can start to increase your activity or introduce other options. I was put on a keto diet for 2 1/2 weeks pre surgery so I can’t advise on what your diet requires. Your dietician or surgeon should have given you a plan to follow. Good luck.

    Food Before and After Photos

Cinnamon Spice Almost Keto Pancake 2 tbsps coconut flour, 2 tbsps wheat flour, 2 tbsps water, 1 tbsp milk, 1 egg, 1 tsp baking powder, 1 tsp sugar substitute, dash of salt and spices. Bigger than it looks so I ate ~1/5 and gave the rest away. I could not find a decent recipe builder to accurately give me cals for this so I'm estimating 300 cals. Rant: I officially hate coconut flour. It's too hard to work with. I have wasted so much on failed attempts. I usually have almond flour which is a lot more forgiving, but I ran out.
