    Surgery June 29

    I too remember that feeling. So excited for you! The best advise I can give a newbie is to do exactly what your dr tells you to do, eat the foods they tell you to and do not deviate from that plan. I made the mistake in falling back on those foods that got me to where I needed intervention simply because they didn't make me sick (milkshakes, cream of anything soups, ect). Had I ate what I was told to and the exact amounts I was told to I would have already reached my weight loss goal and would not have had such a struggle over the past 4 years. It's a constant battle for everyone I'm sure. With the proper support and guidance, you'll do just fine!
  2. Hi, I'm new here and having problems! I had the surgery on Dec. 3 and I'm still miserable. My weight is going down, but I'm in almost constant pain and discomfort. It feels like I have "bubbles' in my lungs and I am struggling to get a night's sleep. Any body else having these pain problems?

    Extremely Nervous...

    I just went to one. I was told that most all insurance require the suervised 6 month diet by your Dr. a psychological assessment and a nutritional assessment (these are only good for 6 months). They handed out a list of insurance co and what they require. Some insurance co like mine requires you to lose a % of your weight before they will approve it also.

    Extremely Nervous...

    I had Medicare, so they didn't require a 6 mth diet. So I had surgery exactly 3 weeks from my seminar. I also didn't have a pre op diet (which is rare). I was just told to eat a lite dinner the night before and nothing after midnight. I went to outback for ribs - thats what I considered lite back then! I stayed 1 nite in the hospital (required by Medicare) - your insurance will tell you whether you have to stay or can do OP. The pain was bearable - I had my liquid Vicodin, which I got refilled once. I don't work, but if I did, I think I would've been ready to go back after 1 week for a sitting job, maybe 2 for a more physical one. My pre op diet sucked. I misread my booklet and thought it said 4 weeks of clear liquids and Protein Shakes. I literally starved the first 2 weeks, till I added tomato Soup (thought I was cheating and didn't ell my dr). Come to find out after many month and after re reading my post op directions, I was sposed to be on full liquids for 4 weeks (to include cream Soups, yogurt, pudding) and I wasn't cheating at all! After 3 weeks of liquids only, I cheated and added mashed potatoes. The best thing I ever had. I could've bought stock in KFC! Please don't make the same mistakes as I did tho - my first "real" food was Burger King cheeseburger. Ate the whole thing and felt nothing. Ate normally (just like pre band) for the first 2 fills and 4 mths. Then came my 3rd fill - it was "MAGIC". That's when I really started losing weight. I eat everything, including bread, rice, Pasta. Alot of people can't tolerate them or are on a low carb diet. The only things my band won't tolerate is pizza crust, pineapple chunks, and pancakes (all the P's!) I just eat very little of it. When I go out for a meal (about 3x a week), I can eat about 1/4 - 1/3 of my meal and the rest comes home with me. I just got my restaurant card in the mail today (make sure you get one from your dr) (I've lost the last 2 I've had) which asks restaurants to serve you smaller portions or the kids menu. They charge you the kids price at buffet - it's really nice since I don't eat $12.00 worth of food - ever! The kids menu isn't very healthy, though, so you really have to be careful. I still go to buffets occasionally, only filling my plate once, taking a couple bites of everything. You'll be fine. We're all anxious before surgery. The pain really isn't all that bad. The worst thing is the liquid diet, but if I can do it, anyone can! Good luck! Marci

    Surgery 4/13/07 any advice?

    I think at some point we have all had the "what have I done" thought but it is by far the best decision I have ever made for myself. The weight loss is slow for me, but I can tell you that I don't think about food like I used to and I feel ten thousand times better than I did pre-surgery. I am 48 lbs lighter and for the first time in years, I am actually looking forward to getting out my summer clothes from last year and not worrying about not being able to fit in them! Good luck .....the first week will be hard but you will get thru it.
  6. I'm excited today because I attended my first information meeting about bariatric surgery at Kiaser. It was informative however I must say a lot of the information I knew because I been researching on this every time a question pops up in my mind. I go tomorrow to my body analysis appointment where they take a picture and weight you prior to beginning the 12 week options program. I can't believe this is all about to get in motion. As a requirement I have to loose 10% of body weight prior to surgery (29lbs) I actually think that will be the most weight I ever lost. Well just wanted to share my journey so far.

    Feeling Nothing

    I totally feel you on this. I am 5'6 presently weighting 166 and get lots of compliments but I DON'T SEE what others see. I still feel and look fat. I am six mts out. I too thought losing this weight would make me happy but it has not. Tired so darn tired all the time. Doctor said lab work was good.

    I can only speak from my own experience. The band works very well. There is no way I would have been able to stick to a diet long enough to take off the weight I have so far with the band (and keep it off). I had my mind made up about the band and was determined to get it and change my life and the way I felt about myself. The only anxiety I had was toward surgery in general. I have had 3 other surgeries and the general anesthesia really messes with me. I was not looking forward to that, but knew it would only be a temporary thing. There are enough things in life that cause stress and are out of our control. I try not to stress myself out or lose sleep over the things I do have control over. I chose to be banded and that is a positive thing for me, not a stress. Good luck to you on this journey.

    Fianlly Approved!

    Slimagainsoon, I am only 5'3" and I am not concerned what anyone else says my goal weight should be. I know that for my height I should weigh between 118-135. I chose the upper number because of my age. Sure I know that loosing too much could make me look even older (:-)) but I think that 135 is a reasonable goal. The last time I saw any of those numbers (50 years ago) I was 120. One of my goals is to have a "normal" BMI. I do NOT want to listed on anything as "overweight, obese or morbidly obese"...been there, done that. At this point I am also 48% fat. I want to be in the normal range for that number too. So...if I get all those numbers normal...then whatever that weight ends up being is the weight I will be happy with. I'm thinking it will be 135. Thank you so much for your kind wishes...I am looking forward to joining you on the losers bench. :-)

    Another Lurker ~ Newbie!

    When I made my ticker, I put in the highest weight I have been, which was at the end of last year. Which was when, I started doing Zumba twice a week and eating lower carbs. In February, I saw my doctor to start my diet/weight monitoring (insurance requirement) and he recommended a reduce calorie diet. Then in March, I started a 6 week course with a Nutritionist (again, part of the insurance requirement) and it just ended last week. SO, long story short, I have lost weight REALLY trying with exercise, reduce calorie/carb intake, and tips/counseling from a Nutritionist. I have done this many times before, but as with everyone else, my weight loss is not sustainable.

    Another Lurker ~ Newbie!

    I am excited to say, I am approved for surgery! I really thought BCBSNJ (Direct 10) would write back asking for the full 6 months of diet/nutrition physician counseling since I only did 3 months and corresponding 6 week nutrition class. Of course, I sent them every weight history I could find in a nice little spreadsheet with what diet I was on for each date. Plus a copy of the CURVES diet and their whole exercise schedule for the 2006 year. I am so shocked and surprised! My surgery date is scheduled for 07/06/09 (since I have so much going on in the month of June). I cannot wait!!!!!!! :smile:

    Has Lap Band helped you?

    Hey Cammy, welcome aboard. I love my lapband. It's working pretty great for me. I think the most challenging part of having a band is having to change some old bad habits. The band is really only a bridge to get you to a healthier lifestyle....you still have to do your part....but that's also one of the biggest rewards. The weight loss is pretty rewarding too, lol. It sucks that you may not have strong family support. But there are a ton of friendly people here that will try and help. I would strongly recommend that you start researching all weight loss surgeries before you decide which, if any, are right for you. Good luck!
  14. I've been lurking on the forums for a few weeks, learning lots, and now I finally feel like I can join in. I went for my consult today, set up appts. with the nutritionist and psychologist over the next two weeks, and the doctor's office (Kelly Clinch in Kirkland, WA) is pushing through my insurance approval so that I can beat the cut off date of August 1, when he and loads of other doctors suddenly become "out of network". So, fingers crossed that the approval happens poste-haste, and I get this party started. About me: I'm good at losing weight, bad at keeping it off. I lost 54 lbs. about 18 mos. ago but it came back on as soon as I got lazy and started eating the same amounts that my 6'3" husband does! I bike commute year round, make jewelry, and read books like they're going out of style. I can't wait to get started on this journey and have high hopes that it will turn into the "lifestyle" that the last weight loss effort was touted as being. Cheers!
  15. Hi there I am a 'fresh' bandit - Another success story of Dr S Watson in Perth WA. I was banded on the 11 August, have had a 2ml fill since the surgery and am set to see my Dr tomorrow to discuss another fill tomorrow. I have lost approx 8.5 kgs thus far (it would be nice to stop wanting to get on the scales everyday!) Everything is going very well so far...seem to be settling into this new lifestyle ok. Only negative for me is the 2 lots of gastro I have had, which is horrid at the best of times but any lap-bander will agree that the symptoms are so much worse!   16. Hi All, In Nov of 2009 I attended a lap band seminar and was able to sign up for an appointment in January of 2010. Due to several issues on both the office and my schedule the appointment got pushed back to March of 2010. After a 3 hour wait in the office I was finally seen by the surgeon, he looked at the forms I filled out and seemed to imply I had not tried enough dieting because I only had one listing in the form. The surgeon then proceeded in a very demeaning way to say that I was not a good candidate for lap band and that I would only loose 50 lbs and be stuck unable to get any further weight loss surgery. Now my BMI is over 65, and mostly has been and prior to a couple of years ago I was not unhappy with my weight. But recently I find I cannot move well, getting more and more tired. I have sleep apnea and a varicose issue in my lower legs. I have what I call permanent pregnant woman's back and my lungs are scarred from chronic bronchitis and a bought of pneumonia. I hate the thought of trying fad diets to only have my weight yoyo which even I know is not healthy. Needless to say I was very upset. Now I have spoke with other Lap Band patients who were as heavy or heavier than me and they have lost well over 150 lbs each. If I were to loose 150 lbs that would alleviate a great many of my issues. I have a couple of new Dr's names but due to the rejection I got the first time I tried I am hesitant about trying again. Has anyone been through this???

    Late Nights..

    And why don't you go out? Today am almost 4 week out, and I went to a BBQ at my chair's. I had my pureed lunch b4 going, and sipped water all mt time there. I felt good, and many friends talked to me about my weight loss. It was quite good time. next week am going to a brown bag lunch with friends in a park. you can always find something fun to do with your friends. Think positively

    You might try shock treatment!!!! I remember 50 years ago when I was in Boot Camp, I didn't know if I would make it home for Christmas. The chance was looking pretty poor because all the marbles were not in place. So when I talked with my mom leading up to the holidays, I told her it probably wasn't going to happen. Well at the last minute, my orders came through and I flew home and had my sister pick me up at the airport. I called my mom and told her that I wasn't going to make it. My sister took me home and I knocked on the front door. I looked a lot different after bootcamp. They almost shaved all the hair off my head. I lost weight and was looking rather trim. When my mom opened the door she didn't recognize me. She thought I was still in Texas. She initially thought I must be a military friend from bootcamp. It was one of the biggest surprises that I ever did. Shock treatment can be good sometimes. It opens the avenues of communication. So maybe next time you are going to visit your mother. Call her up at the last minute and tell her something came up and you will not get to visit with her and then ring her doorbell.

  21. This is my first post. I had lap band surgery on March 25, 2008 and got my first fill on April 23. So far so good. I was sooooo happy to get off of the liquids and pureed foods. I still mash my food and chew like crazy but I have lost a total of 37 pounds since I filled out the surgery application a year ago. The doctor wanted me to lose 15 pounds before surgery but I lost 22 pounds before surgery. My doctor is Dr. Jay Jan in Portland, Oregon. Lap Band is the best tool for me to lose weight. I haven't had any problems so far. Would love to hear from you'all for any tips that might help me lose some more lbs. Any good recipes? Barbara

Ok I know nothing about insurance, I'm 24 years old, and I never had medical insurance, I live in Houston, TX and I was looking into getting insurance that will cover lap band, I now weigh 268 lbs, and I've been overweight my whole life but this is the biggest I ever got, I need help and information, I'm getting so depress because I don't want to gain anymore weight.
  23. Recently I felt attacked by someone and this type of behavior in the past would have sent me spiraling down into a deep dark depression of binging and purging. I have elected to take the higher road and not let this behavior undermine what I have accomplished to date. I will say that this type of behavior is what I was so hoping to rid myself of. I see now that this will never be the case. I will just have to understand there are these types of people in the world. I can't change their behavior nor can I change the way they treat me. I CAN change the way I react to that behavior. I also choose to not participate in the communication interchange which makes me feel attacked. Again I say I have taken the higher road and will keep striving for the brass ring. Thanks for reading. Just my own personal rantings. I am so happy I have this forum to vent like this.

    What things hamper your weight loss?

    I think the one thing that really slows my weight loss is my friends. Not that they are forcing food in my mouth, but they are all overwieght and eat what they want when they want. It is really hard for me to go out to eat with them and order the chicken breast and veggies when they are all ordering something so good. We all eat together about 1-2 times a week and I have no will power when I am with them. It has nothing to do with them and I am not blaming them by any means. I myself have to get out of the habit of rewarding myself with food and be strong enough to order the low cal entree on the menu. I live in a suburb of Dallas and we have over over 40 sit down restaraunts. This does not include fast food. They are too many too count. We have 4 restaraunt rows in my city and at least 4 McDonalds in my city alone, so you can imagine how easy it is to get something to eat. I rarely have time to cook with my schedule so I eat out a lot. For some reason when I am with my friends my band doesn't work! I'm sure it is all mental and mostly just out of habit, but thank god I am working on it. I have a friend coming to visit tonight who likes to eat so I have been preparing myself all day that I will order low fat off of whatever menu we get! It's all a mind game and we have to find out what it is that can trigger our good eating on a meal to meal basis.
