    VSG as a preventive measure?

Judy, people have band to sleeve revisions all the time who have not yet regained all their weight. But the band becomes a problem and they need to remove it...and they know that if they simply remove that and do nothing else the weight will come back on in a hurry due to the change in metabolism. In those cases I'm all for it. On the other hand, you've got a young 20 something who is 15 pounds overweight and doesn't want to have to fight weight problems in the future so she has WLS...I'm not sure I support that. Because as you say, she still will have to do the same things to keep the weight off in the future regardless of whether or not she has the surgery. I think the surgery is great for people who already have the weight and are having trouble getting it off. The sleeve gives you a chance to lose it but you have to do the work to keep it off. For people who simply see the weight gain as inevitable, and want to prevent obsesity related problems in the future....I truly believe those people can prevent those issues with the same attention to health and nutrition without having surgery if they commit before the weight gain has gotten out of control.... UNLESS...there are diagnosed, underlying medical conditions which will lead to obesity regardless.....like disorders of the thyroid. Ought these people have WLS as a preventative measure when they know obesity is coming regardless of what they do? I don't know enough about thyroid disorders to know how likely that scenario is, but I'm willing to at least consider the possibility in these cirucumstances.

Hey all!!! HAPPY NEW YEAR! Most of you will make your goal weight this year - HOW EXCITING!! BeckieT, glad your revision went well, hopefullyyou'll have NO MORE staph infections! Ick! My New Years was great. Went over to a friends party - drank ONE apple-tini and was so freaking buzzed. I laughed at how crazy it was. And I had a few sips of Champagne at Midnight - which is< I think, the first carbonation I've had since surgery. No pain or excessive gas with it, but the bubble felt funny! Ha! NOW that the 'Holidays' are all behind us... I'm going to start watching my calorie intake again and logging my foods in my bodybugg site. I've been at/hovered around 305-301 for 2 weeks. Its about dang time I get serious again and hit TWOterville!! CHop chop!!

Wow it is quiet around here or is the website not working? I hope everyone is doing well. JoJo your weight loss is amazing! I hope your wound heals quickly. As for my appointment - well I heard the dreaded words - you might have slipped. I am going Wednesday to have a swallow to see what is going on. The doc will be there and take fluid out - if I am slipped hopefully taking fluid out will let if fall back in to place. If not I am looking at a revision ASAP. Keeping my fingers crossed that I am just too tight! I am off to GA today to visit my facilities down there, so I will check in after my appointment on Wed.

Thanks Stef. Missy I am moving too, though not as far as you. I only have a one-bedroom place but it's still a freaking nightmare. Hope you get thought it OK. Note to self: Don't buy stuff. BeckieT, I'm so happy your port revision went fine. Now the band can do its job better and the rest of us can breathe easier knowing that it's not tooo major. So glad you're 'fixed'. Note for you guys: Don't try to eat dried apple rings. They will boogy in your osephegus all night havin' a NY party of their own.

    July 2021 Surgery People!

I agree, the full liquid phase seems to be going very slowly. I had my sleeve the same day as your revision. I started full liquids on Thursday (29th) and don't move to soft stage until August 10th. Getting tired of broths & shakes, but knowing this is temporary makes it easier. Sometimes I even feel like I wouldn't want anything to eat anyway, those times makes it easier. Then other times I really want something other than what I can have. I am looking forward to that soft food stage! (No purée stage on my plan) Yesterday, I added Genepro to my Crystal Light and my soup (half serving of genepro in each), that way I only needed 1 protein shake. Do you, or anyone else have anything they did during full liquid that makes it easier or more interesting? We'll be on to a new phase before we know it, we just got to hang in there! Hoping everyone is doing well with their progress. 😊 (Scale isn't moving as much as I thought it would my first week🙄, but it's moving)
  6. I am hoping since the original post was 2011 your revision has been performed but it took me many years to find a doctor to help me out. I had the Molina band in 2003 by Dr. Molina. In 2006 I began having complications but at the time I wasn't aware it was band related. I would be woke up out of a dead sleep coughing and chocking on stomach acids. I just thought I had reflux. Now i know it was that I was forming an obstruction due to scar tissue from the band. I had severe chronic reflux and vomitting from the food not passing thru. I tried for several years to find a doctor to help me. Due to the high risk of this complication of the Molina band I attempted to see many doctors but they did not do Molina band revisions. I went to several others but my insurance did not have bariatric coverage but in reality I wasn't obese and the surgery was not for weight lose it was for a complication. I was almost completely obstructed when I finally remembered seeing Dr. Nowzardan from Houston on TV and I worked for a plastic surgeon previously that worked with Dr. Nowzaradan. I gave his office a call on a Friday and they got me in the next day on a Saturday and by Monday afternoon my surgery was approved and scheduled. His insurance girl was great. They knew the correct way to code it since it was not a bariatic surgery. I had a hiatal hernia repair, gastrectomy and gastrojejunostomy. So basically I had a hiatal hernia from years of throwing up so that was repaired. The gastrectomy was to cut the section out of my stomach that the band was adhered to and the gastrojejunotsomy was the gastric bypass. According to Dr. Nowzardan I was not a candidate for the sleeve gastrectomy and the only real option I had was gastric bypass surgery. Without him I do not know where I would be. Malnutrition for sure. I am going on 5 years since my bypass and it has been great. My weight stays within 138 to 145 over the past few years. Initially I got down to about 130 but then went up a few pounds after maybe the first two years. It's been the best thing for me. Other than dumping every so often I have no complaints. I have to take that back. I tend to be a noncompliant patient in regards to taking Vitamins so there are times I am Iron deficiant anemic but as long as I am taking my vitamins and supplements my levels are perfect. I hope this helps anyone that is suffering with issues from the Molina band.Angie

    100% REGRET THIS SLEEVE GASTRECTOMY

Sorry to hear your story. I just revised from band to sleeve on 8/12. I had my band for 9 years and I also had a hiatal hernia. What was slated as a 90 minute surgery took 3.5 hours. Recovery with my band was simple, I got the surgery on a Thursday, was at an Easter egg hunt on Sunday and started a new job that following Tuesday. I expected similar pain...boy was I wrong! I am 6 days out and I have been up walking...not strenuous, but about a mile at moderate speed. I have been getting about 40-60 grams of Protein in via shakes, hi-protein chicken broth, hi-protein Jello, and Isopure--by far the jello goes down the easiest and thinner liquids hurt. My problem is sudden, shooting pains in my sides and my groin. It feels like a cramp, but doesn't tense and then ease it is just tense....heating pad helps some and I have been popping Gas x and prescription heartburn meds. What are theses sharp pains and when will they subside? Sometimes the belly binder helps and sometimes hurts. My stomach looks like I am 6 mos prenant and was even asked such when in the grocery store! I do not regret my decision, I just want to get moving...please advise. P.S. My post-op follow-up is Thursday and I still have a drain in place.

Yes- which is why I stopped beating myself up about not following mine exactly and revising it to fit my needs. How do these surgeons come up with the post op plans? Mine says I can drink alcohol 4 weeks post op; other people have to wait 6-12 months? Some are requiring 80 g of protein beginning immediately after surgery and others are 15 g for the first week? Some people are supposed to start with multivitamins day 1 post op and others wait 1-2 weeks to integrate them? Are these surgeries so radically different that the post op diets need to differ this much? I’m listening to my body and pushing to get max protein but I’m not going to beat myself up if I don’t get in 80 g of protein. Sorry.

My sleeve is so unpredictable. I’ll have days where I swear I can eat like a “normal” person and I honestly forget I’m sleeved. Then I’ll have days where a boiled egg fills me up for hours and I have zero interest in eating. What’s even weirder is that my husband- who has NOT had any bari surgery- eats a lot like me and sometimes he runs into restriction. Tonite we had date night and went to one of our favorite pubs. We split a chicken sandwich with fries, each had 1 cocktail and 1 beer. We didn’t even manage to finish half of our halves of the sandwich and also failed to drink over half our beers! We laughed that we were failing so bad at splurging. One thing that is kind of alarming me is that my acid reflux seems to be kicked in overdrive lately. I’m about to really clean up my eating and drinking prepping for this next foot surgery, so I’m hoping to catch a break from the constant heartburn. I really, really, really am happy with where I am and the LAST thing I want is a revision due to this reflux. I love my sleeve— I don’t want a pouch. I don’t have the best tips to remember to drink water bc I guzzle down 2/3 of my daily water before I eat for the first time of the day. I’ll literally have around 60 ounces of water between waking up and eating around 10-11 am, then drink maybe 12-16 more the whole rest of the day. It tends to leave me feeling somewhat dehydrated by bedtime, but bedtime is when I will “treat” myself to my Coke Zero. My hair never really came back. It’s still fairly thin, but I will never regret having the VGS. Good God, I hope the kidney stone thing never happens to me: I’m a wimp when it comes to stuff like that.

I love your dress and those shoes are amazing. I'm doing ok. I'm going to be having an EGD because I have an off and on again stomach pain/upset since surgery. I haven't got the date yet until they get the approval. I will let you know what I find out. I'm at 251 and have lost 87 pounds. I feel like I should have lost more, but probably am waiting too much. Last night I ate a whole croissant with no ill feeling. If eat chicken it hurts after a few bites. I try to stick to soft proteins. Yogurt is the easiest on my stomach. I still have tons of restriction, but am finding I can graze a bit. I'm still trying to be very mindful of what I eat. I am at a BMI of 39.9 which is just below morbid obesity. I still have a long way to go. I really hope it get there by 18 months. My dr and I will go over my options at 12 months to see if i need/want a revision to DS. I'm having so much lose skin and would consider doing my arms. I carry my weight in my upper half of my body and have way smaller legs. I guess we all have our problem areas. Mine is my arms, breasts and stomach. You're looking good! How much do you have to lose to goal? I'm at a spot that most people started. But, overall I feel pretty amazing! Take care! Stay in touch. 💗
  13. I have been banded for over 3 years. The first year I lost from 350 to 230. Then I started having difficulties. Had a port replacement, couldn't get to a proper level for weight loss. Got pregnant, had a complete unfill due to hyperemesis, gained a boatload of weight and found out I have esoph. spasms, dialation and scar tissue choking my tubing which means no fill in, no fill out. I am now actively seeking approval for a DS/BPD. This is a Duodenal Switch. Sue, also on this board is also getting a revision to DS. In no means was this MY fault nor could I not "cut it" with the band. Stuff happens. DS is different than the RNY, as there is no pouch, no dumping, very slight chance of regain, and it has the best rate of success for long term weight loss. It will require extensive supplementation. I always thought I had the superior surgery, the "thinking persons surgery", and apparantly these people are thinking like I use to. Now I am eating some of my own words. My point is this, everyone is different. Each surgery is awesome in its own way. What would you do if your body started rejecting your band? Gain back the weight and say "oh, well?" Circumstances do change, and I had to change with them. And to tell the truth, I'm really tired of feeling filled to the gills and my stomach still growling. I have friends who have had surgery 2 years later than me and are at goal while I am still groveling along. After 3 years, I'm tired of fighting. In order to lose, I have to starve. In order to live comfortably, I gain. And now if doesn't even matter because the fill that is in there will stay in there until I have surgery to remove it.
  14. Wow! I'm not sure where to begin to comment on all of this. I think 1st of all I should say I had a banding done a year ago and i am about to have a revision to the bypass. I have had alot of complications. as far as bashing other types of surgery, the site i normally frequent does not do that. thinnertimes.com we are all very supportive and urge everyone to make an informed decision about what is best for them. most people that i know have researched enough to know if they can follow through with the diet of the band or not. because with the band if you are a compulsive eater you can drink milkshakes till the cows come home and with the bypass you are welcome to try but.... do it close to a hospital cause you are gonna get sick. with the bypass reversal ..it can and has been done, my surgeon has done them and they are very difficult and are prone to complications and are only done in extreme situations. Both surgeries have people that regain their weight! That is a fact and it is not just because of the type of surgery it is because people are addicted to food, afterall thats why we are or were over weight! It is a choice and while my experience with the band has left me bitter if asked i will tell it is their choice but i will be gald to tell of my experiences with it! With the pregnancy issue, there a lot of people who had children post operatively from bypass and all are doing fine. I have a friend that became pregnant 5 or 6 mos out and had a very healthy pregnancy. From the sites that I have researched (absa.org) and others the 25% statistic is actually a little low. A lot of people have to have the revision due to complications and the fact that if they had the will power to stop eating junk they wouldn't need surgery to start with. I have respect for the bandsters who are losing and doing good and I have respect for those trying to achieve weight loss. wls is a battle and it should not be argued amongst the ranks it should be argued on the field. If someone is putting your choice down that makes them the loser not you! You did what was best for you and your family. Who gives a crap about he said/she said we are adults fighting for our very lives. I don't need anyones approval but God, My Family, and the Insurance Co.! ( in that order ) Good Luck to you all and hope to have your prayers as I undergo this revision at the end of the year. Christy
  15. @@KS123 - I was 46 when I got my lap-band and 58 when I revised to the sleeve. You are, definitely, not alone. In fact, you're practically a youngster! I'm now 59!

Surgery Day! and beyond: Part 2

Girl, yay! I am so excited for you. I'm glad your pain is so well managed. I had a drain after my revision to bypass and I hated every second of it, so more power to you for dealing with four of them. Can't wait to see the end result, especially the dragon tattoo!

    Has anyone taken up Bycyling?

Wow! I have been trying for 2 days to catch-up where I left off. Seems all of you have stepped up the chatter a few notches!!! I have been a mental wreck latley more so than usual. I have endured months of no fill, some fill, no fill, some fill, hospital, no fill, no fill, some fill, hospital and finally revision surgery and no fill. I have kept from gaining weight until the last month. I had to go buy some new fat clothes, as I am really packing it on right now and can't seem to slow it down. I feel there is hope, I will see my Dr. next Friday and try to get a good fill. I haven't posted much because I don't like to bring negativity to such a committed and successfull group. I hope you are all well. Now on to what has inspired me to post. Juli, your updated photos, WOW, I am kinda welling up with tears as I wriite this, but, WOW, you have not changed yourself since the Indiana ride. The more fitting word is TRANSFORMED! You should be so proud of yourself! Seriously, you are a new you, and I am damn proud to know you! Take Everyone, JnofreakinfillweightgaininassC
  19. Yes! I just had yet... another scope, (my 14th. in less than 6 yrs.) due to urping, puking my food and constant nausea. My Dr. expected to stretch a stricture again and to take a peek at my ulcer... possibly schedule for a joint revision... (re-do surgery.) Ulcer has healed, no strictures... BUT I now have an, "extended, candy cane limb." So I'll be having a barium swallow, (again!) soon so he can decide if that's causing my nausea, small food consumption, puking and urping. So I guess it's likely for a surgical procedure for that as well. Geeze!
  20. It is just a pipe dream at this point, anyway, because the insurance company specifically said that I had to be at a 40 BMI for 5 years. I've been reading that the mini gastric bypass is not as expensive in Mexico. That might be the (only) option if I want a revision.

    Hi from Ireland!

Hi Loriha So glad your getting sorted, finally. I too often think about the awful conditions and way were treated by ACS, it doesnt bear thinking about if there was an emergency. You wont know yourself now and will be Twiggy by Xmas  I met Gerri today and she looks just fantastic! She has been so lucky not to have had any problems! Im just waiting on a date for my bypass. I had a scope done last Friday and I still have a stitch in my stomach from when I got the band done. They couldnt see it when they were removing the band because I had an infection. I kind of knew something wasnt right because at times I still feel like I have a band. But they will remove it when I have bypass done. Hopefully will be having op done in Blackrock clinic, but may have to go to liverpool as its more complicated having revision surgery. Anyway I just cant wait to get it over and done with, its been a long road both physically and emotionally. Best of luck and hope the lbs drop off you!!! Brenners xx

    Self Pay Band Removal

Hi! I was originally denied through my insurance for a revision. However I think I have found the best way to do RNY. I will have to be self pay to remove my band, then start the consultation for RNY! My policy states that a repeat surgery will be paid for if patient was compliant with first surgery! Has anyone had a similar situation to this?

How do you deal? It's so hard..

I'm on the puree diet right now. I hope you stay strong and take it day by day. Each Post OP day was way better than the last. During my first week post OP I've taken my family to fast food restaurants and sit with them drinking water while they eat. I've cooked dinner or baked cookies or bread which I was not going to eat. For me, I am so sure I will follow the nutrition plan, it isn't tempting at all. They feel bad eating in front of me but I tell them it honestly isn't an issue. I did this twice, once for the sleeve, then once for the revision to DS. Something that made it even easier this year is that I dieted for 5 months prior to my surgery. I dropped all sugary foods, fried foods, and sugary beverages. Another thing that helps me is having a finite list of things I am allowed to eat. If I see or smell something else, I just say that's not one of the 10 things I plan to eat during this phase. I understand the position you are in now craving things you may have had recently but knowing if you eat them you could put your health at risk. There is definitely a need to set boundaries with your spouse regarding where he eats since this is troubling you.
  24. Hello surgery buddies! Revision from VSG to RNY! Just got my date yesterday. November 5th for me! I was surprised at how fast the process moved this time!
  25. I'm so sorry. Take the meds religiously. They tried to get mine to heal for 6 weeks before surgery was the plan. The constant contracting pain is the hardest part for me. And I struggle to eat anything and when it started at 2 month post op I was doing great. I got to where I could eat anything with no issues. I'm living of milk with protein powder and yogurt now :/ Good luck. Feel free to pm me! My bypass revision is scheduled for Monday 2/20.
