  1. I started at over 700 pounds and have managed to achieve a normal BMI. Actually, for a short time I was below a normal BMI thanks to my binge-running but when then binge-running ended my weight bounced up to high end normal BMI. After 18+ years I am still high normal BMI. Theoretically any given WLS patent can achieve a normal BMI. However, the average overall weight loss is about 60%. Good luck, Tek

    Post op appointment

Congrats! These are all questions that your surgery center will have to answer, because they are individual to your and your program. Definitely call them and ask them these things! 1) My pre-op appointment was less than 2 weeks prior to my surgery 2) The anesthesia nurse called me and told me which medications to stop taking prior to surgery and that was just for the night before/morning of surgery. I had stopped taking phentermine a long time ago because my insurance wouldn't cover it, but I was taking metformin for weight loss. Again, these are program/personal health related questions and no one on a forum can really answer when your appointments will be or which medications you should stop and when. Good luck!

    Zero pounds…

I am not sure why I am just seeing this and it looks like you have some good suggestions already but I just want to add that I have been on premiere shakes since day one and I am losing so I second it that it’s not the brand. I would also limit the avocado and nuts during weight loss phase. They are healthy fats but still fats (at least make sure you are measuring and counting the calories).
  6. congratulations! A 52 lb weight loss in 7 weeks is amazing. WTG!
  7. I'm 63 and had my surgery August 11, 2021. So far I've lost 52 lbs., and already I feel so much better. Less pain in the joints, walking is easier. I was told by my surgeon that my weight loss might be slower, but if 52 lbs in 7 weeks is slow, that's ok with me! Hang in there during the process required for your surgery approval - mine took five months., during which I embarked on a "farewell to food" tour and gained about 24 lbs. If I had known it would take that long, I don't think I would have indulged so much!

    Hospital Bag

I was in for approximately 24 hours. I way overpacked. I honestly did nothing but snooze and try to sip for the entire stay. Didn't even turn the TV on until the last hour I was there waiting for discharge. I used my phone and charger, comfy clothes for the ride home, hair brush for when I left, and I brushed my teeth a couple times because my mouth felt filmy and gross but I used the toothbrush they provided for that. I don't think I even took my toiletry bag out while I was there. I was not allowed to shower for a day or two after I believe. Assuming everything goes smoothly the time will go quickly and you'll be home before you know it.

    NSV: Blood pressure medication

LOL! I meant I didn't expect my blood pressure to regulate itself with only 33 lbs of weight loss! Yes, I'm well aware of the Dread Stall. I shall change nothing (other than moving to purées and soft foods which I do tomorrow). And if it stalls, it stalls.

Amazing results! Congratulations on your weight loss!
  11. Congratulations on your weight loss and your very supportive husband! Makes all the difference in the world when the people closest to you "have your back"!! Awesome Post! 😊
  12. Others said it already but yes the three week stall is a thing. Just keep doing what you are doing. Stay off the scale for a while if that helps and trust the process. The loss will pick back up shortly.
  13. So I have experienced some good NSV's like many of you during these past few months. Stuff like fitting in restaurant booths better, fitting clothes better, not having to worry so much about weight limits on certain things, the car seatbelt not making that dreaded sound cause it was pulled out too far.........lol.......etc. But this weekend I had something else happen that took me by surprise. So since surgery on May 19th I lost 62 lbs and since March the total is 81 lbsl! Even though those numbers sound good and I can see some changes in me, whenever my husband says stuff like, "Wow, I can't believe how thin you've gotten!" etc. I always reply with how I don't see it and how I still have lots to go. He always says I don't give myself enough credit, etc. Anyway, this weekend we were out and about and we decided to stop and have lunch and as I approached the restaurant door, I was taken aback by the figure/person I saw in the reflection. It was almost as if I didn't recognize myself for a split second. It was strange. I usually wear my old baggy clothes still but this day I decided to wear leggins that actually fit and were NOT baggy, I had my heel boots on, a nice sweater, etc. I was feeling really good about myself. Well, the next day we were out again visiting a lake/park. This particular lake has different boat rentals like kayaks, canoes, etc. Things I could never do cause of my weight. So we went inside to inquire and, low and behold, I was actually UNDER the weight limit!!! I was so happy I could barely contain my excitement!! So we walked outside, me in front of my husband, and he again commented on my weight loss and how I've been looking and so I told him to take a few full body pics of me so that I could see what he sees. He took one of the front and back. Now, taking a photo of my whole body has always been a HUGE NO NO and everyone knows it so I was scared to see the results. Well when I looked at the pictures I actually burst into tears!!! It was such an unexpected reaction from me that it caught us both off guard. My husband was asking and hoping they were tears of happiness and I told him YES! That it was the first time in decades that I could actually stomach seeing a photo of myself that I was Ok with. I cried some more and hubby comforted me and told me how proud he was of how well I was doing and how happy he was that the surgery was finally helping me lose weight when so many things I tried never did. He said he was happy I was getting healthy, that I was off some medication, and my labs were coming back great. He also reaffirmed that my weight was NEVER an issue for him and that he loved me always, no matter how big or small I am and I told him that I always knew that but that it was always an issue for me. Which is why I had the surgery. I guess it was the combo of the catching a glimpse of myself in the reflection, the better fitting clothes, learning I can now kayak and then seeing myself in the photos that it just really hit me. I have a ways to go still, like I always tell him, but I am FINALLY starting to feel happy with what I am seeing. It feels really good!!
  14. I had gastric sleeve surgery on September 20th and was losing weight pretty quick but it just stopped in the last few days! Is this normal? Is it going to pick up again? Has anyone else had this issue?

    July 2021 Surgery People!

JMTaylor, eholmes89, & laurenantics, It sounds like you are all doing so well! Congratulations on your weight losses.👏 It can be hard to avoid comparing your weight loss with others. We need to remind ourselves that we're all different. I think it also may even out, somewhat (of course there are extremely quickly or slow losers), some lose a lot right away & then may have longer stalls. I think we all just want to get to our goal so badly. We'll get there! 😁🏆
  16. Wow, I didn't realize salad was considered a slider food! Popcorn is definitely something I might get in trouble with, so I need to stay away, at least during weight loss phase! That was always a weakness when I went to the movies. I couldn't say no to popcorn once I smelled it. 🍿 I will definitely need to measure it out once I have it again.
  17. Sorry to hear of your bumpy start, but I'm happy to hear things are starting to turn around. It should continue to get easier as you heal & move through the different phases of the food plan. Perhaps the sugar free icepops may go down easier or a warm broth. It is a lot of trying to see what your new stomach likes. For me, I get on little "kicks" of things I like for a bit, and then want nothing to do with them, but I think it is from being so limited at earlier stages. (I haven't wanted soups or tuna for weeks!🤣) Good luck recovering & healing from your surgery. Wishing you the best on your weight loss path.

My story... I caused my own stalls.

It's great that you've taken control of your surgery, but it sounds like you should consider talking with a bariatric therapist. This should be someone they have on staff, but if not, hopefully they can refer you to someone. I'm shocked that they haven't done that. Congrats on your 100+ lbs weight loss. That's a thing to celebrate!

    Before/During/After Photos

My weight loss journey from the day I decided to change my life until now.
  20. Good morning! This is my first post here, but I have been "lurking" for a while. 😊 I had my RNY 3/17/2021 (HW 367, SW 349) and did GREAT for the first 3 months (down to 292.6). Around month 4 I noticed I could eat much more and when boredom hit, I would munch on snacks. I started eating "around" my surgery. Slider foods mostly. I hit my protein goals and water goals daily, but I have realized that I am a stress and emotional eater. In my program, we have a doctor, nutritionist, and a surgeon. I spoke with the nutritionist and the doctor about my habits and how I caused my own stalls. They were quite understanding and even offered to start a medication to control the appetite. (I work 2 jobs and I am a single mother, so I was using food to soothe myself when things were rough.) At my 6 month post-op appointment with my surgeon (279.8) I was hit with accusations of not wanting it bad enough and was told being stressed should make me lose weight, etc. Ugh! At the end of the appointment, he told me he believes in me and it frustrates him when patients aren't losing what he expects. So of course, I went home and did what I knew to do - I ate everything I could without getting sick. I woke up having lost 2 pounds. 🤦‍♀️ As angry as I was with my surgeon, he had changed something in me. He was wrong. I want it bad enough. I just don't know how to cope with stress well. I have always used food to self-medicate, to celebrate, to cope with life. I took up smoking and when I quit, the weight piled on. Today I am 263 pounds. I am 6 1/2 months post op. I am tracking every atom of food I consume again. I am drinking a gallon to a gallon and a half of water every day. I am walking more than ever. When I see him in 5 1/2 months, I want to be at goal. His goal for me is 200 pounds. My personal goal is 167. I did not need the medication to jump-start my weight loss again. I needed to be angry. I say this to say that I was not being honest with myself and when someone was honest with me, I became defensive. I still have days when I eat like crap or days when I don't want to walk. Such is life. I am fighting this food addiction with all my might and I really have my mean old surgeon to thank for the kick in the pants. ❤️

Yeah, damn pleats. Love them but … That’s a lovely skirt, @Sophie7713. Would be worth the ironing torture I think. Especially love the white nail polish too. How long will you be living in your temporary home & why a temporary residence? Are you building a new home or still looking for the perfect place for the three of you? Oh my injury was a battle between a mandolin & a sweet potato & my thumb lost. They had to graft my skin back on. Silly thing to do but so limiting cause it was my dominant hand. God bless must nieces who took me to the hospital, did my washing, washed my hair, did some cooking for me. Want to see a pxt of your new winter flats. These are my latest addition. Actually, that’s not true. There have been several other shoe purchases. Hello, my name is arabesque & I have a shoe addiction. 😉
  24. I know it is empty calories and we are not supposed to have it in weight loss phase but I met my protein goal already and I counted the calories for a small portion of it. Only problem was I was able to eat ALOT more than I expected. Is popcorn a slider food? It didn’t seem like it was ever going to trigger my full feeling. Seems like I could have eaten the whole bag (it was 100 calorie bag but still).
  25. Oddly, i didn't have that problem my first year (I had surgery in the summer of 2015). I was so excited about my weight loss and so gung-ho about following my program that I didn't want any of that stuff. I remember on that first Thanksgiving post-op I had some turkey with gravy, about 2 T of sweet potato casserole, some vegetables - and a thing of pumpkin-flavored yogurt for dessert. I was fine with that (can't remember what I had on Christmas, but I was really good at staying away from the "goodies"). Subsequent years I've caved more - but I just try not to overdo it. One cookie. A small piece of cake. I'm not a big candy fan, so that one was easy. So I do allow myself treats on those holidays - but I just have small portions on the holiday itself and don't keep them around my house the whole season - too tempting.
