Keto vs paleo??? Have you ever tried it?

I was inspired to try the keto diet after seeing photos about it on Instagram from people who'd had the VSG. One of my concerns about it also came from someone I follow on Instagram. She also has a YouTube channel, and back when I was researching having the VSG her videos were helpful to me. She's around the same age and had been about the same BMI as I was when I had the surgery. She was able to get down to 128 (from a surgery weight of about 200, I believe) following an incredibly strict keto plan, but eventually could no longer be that restrictive. She rapidly gained back more than 25 pounds, putting her back into an overweight BMI, which made her feel so discouraged and depressed. After months at the higher weight she is trying keto again, though, so obviously she still feels it was valuable. Prior to having the VSG I frequently yo-yo'd by doing really low carb diets. It was precisely the same pattern - I'd strictly limit my carbs, obsessively follow recipes from online, obsessively dream about carbs I was depriving myself of, and then eventually cave in, and would rapidly regain. With my lower carb, but not strictly low carb diet more like paleo, I've gotten down to a 20 BMI, and maintained it for a year. My weight has only fluctuated by about 5 pounds. That's just me, though. My morning breakfast has more carbs than what's allotted in the entire day for keto (high protein yogurt, low sugar fruit, and kale smoothie). You might find that the keto diet fits you perfectly.

    Any good protein shakes ?

Protein shakes are definitely not known for their deliciousness. I sort of look at them as a necessary evil, lol. You can make your own at home using kefir (liquid yogurt), protein powder, almond milk and ice in a blender. I add peanut powder to make a peanut butter flavor shake, or sugar free syrups in different flavors. Or you can pour the ready to drink ones over a lot of ice which thins it as it melts. Having several different brands and flavors helped me as well. You quickly get tired of the same thing over and over, it helps to have a change.

    1week post op and hungry

I am 5 days out but not actually hungry. I'm having a hard time getting the water and the protein in. My goal today is to get more protein in so I'm not so weak. I think my BODY is hungry but I'm not feeling it as hunger, I'm just sensing a weakness. My nut allows Greek yogurt and veg juice too now, maybe yours does too, just for a variety for my hungry co-sleevers? I bought them but haven't touched them yet.

Daily Menu 6 Months + after surgery

11 months out staying at 1,000 calories a day. Some days (heavy workout) I'll push another 200 calories via a protein bar. B - Protein shake with 1 scoop powder, 1.25c coconut milk and 3/4 c fruit. (Today was mango.) Sometimes I switch up Fairlife Skim for the coconut milk. Today was 25 g protein - add 13 g if I have Fairlife Morning snack - today was seedles grapes about a cup Lunch - 3.5 ounces left over rib eye steak from last night 26 g protein Afternoon snack - Oikos Triple Zero yogurt (15 grams) Dinner - 3-5 ounces of whatever protein I cook for the family most nights ballpark 20 G. -- So that's about 86 grams of protein a day. Plus salad or green veggie. Last night was steak, zucchini fritters and mushrooms. Tonight's dinner (like most Mondays and Wednesdays) will be a protein bar as I have fencing for 2 hours from 7-9 and I don't like to eat before I fence, but by the time I come home, I need to eat something but a meal is not appealing. (Fencing for 2 hours for me is about 1200 calories burned so I burn everything I eat today and wind up with net 0 calories consumed.)
  5. I'm 7 days out and I am having a hard time sipping water also. Broth is a bit better and I can do an oz or two if yogurt before it gets painful. All I can muster in a day smh

    Just been Sleeved

I was sleeved 6/27 and stomach and diguesting is still pretty loud. I hear it's like that during most the healing process and gets better after week 5. I just started real soft foods last tuesday, but l want allowed yogurt during liquid phase. Living off of scrambled eggs and string cheese at the moment but I still get faint a lot. Eating is annoying because I'm hungry but get burnt out on stuff so quickly.
  7. How can you tell when you're full? I'm not even hungry so I surely can't tell when I'm full. I am getting this intense gas type pain after a few sips or spoonful of yogurt... How much are you able to eat at 7 days?

Me! Getting better though everyday. I was tired of shakes so I started adding more protein to my yogurt and broth and it dissolves really well.

    SUGAR FREE SNO CONE/SHAVED ICE

From what I can tell, the majority of sugar free syrups also have 0 carbs and calories (I've found at least one that's 50 calories, no idea what that's about). One sno cone here and there won't kill you or set you off track. To keep cool, how about mixing a sugar free/low calorie drink like crystal light with shaved ice for a slushie? You could make popsicles with crystal light, frozen yogurt, fruit, or any combination of the above. You can also blend your protein shakes with ice or frozen fruit for a nice frozen shake. As a healthy snack for both you and your kids, you could blend frozen bananas for "nicecream" or blend frozen pineapple with just a little bit of coconut milk for something similar to disney's dole whips! My surgeon says to limit fruit to one serving per day so I try not to overdo it with these.

    Feeling weak

I've lost 45 pounds this month. I'm only 2 weeks post op. I'm only allowed pureed foods, yogurt sugar free ices or jello and protein drinks are keeping me alive. Lol. Also eggs. 3 days ago starvation is a serious concern. I'm becoming moody irritable hungry and light headed. Anyone have suggestions? Is this happening to anyone else
  12. Hey everyone, I just had my sleeve almost 2 weeks ago. My doctor had me do a 10 day pre op diet that consisted of protein shake or protein bar for breakfast and lunch then, dinner 3oz of meat and some veggies for dinner. I ended up drinking a ton of protein shakes and soups. Post op, I am struggling to get through with my full liquids diet. I tried different brands but the smell makes me gag, I am so over it. I am eating soups, fat free yogurts, water, Powerade zeros and I find that i'm getting tired of that. I am getting frustrated with the process because now, I find myself feeling hungry when I wasn't feeling hungry right after surgery until about this past Monday or Tuesday. Yesterday, I didn't eat just drank fluids all day. Being frustrated, I've thought about buying foods I'm not suppose JUST to satisfy that hunger and, get the protein and minerals that I need. My question is: How do I ignore my cravings while at the same time, satisfying my food intake?

    Just been Sleeved

Hi Lillie Lou I'm not a doctor so I don't want to give false info but my doctor told me once I felt ready for the full liquids I could move on. My full liquid phase starts Tuesday. So I am slowly starting to incorporate some of the new things I can have such as non fat vanilla Greek yogurt and it was delicious. My husband and I will start making soup purées with our ninja tomorrow and then Tuesday I start the full liquid portion. I'm also extremely excited for sugar free pudding!!!!!!!!

    Sleeved Today.

Sleeved 7/18. Have lost 10 lbs. Eating yogurt, Jello and pudding. Trying to drink enough. Feeling blah but getting rest due to the long travel home from surgery and spending 2 days at my sisters before finally getting home yesterday. So nice to be home and see my puppies

    Just been Sleeved

Yes I would love to have support going on. Today I finally got to have high protein non fat vanilla geek yogurt. It was so delicious and it was a nice little break from the constant shakes. My yogurt had 12 grams of protein and one serving size was perfect I am pleasantly full. Now I will wait a half hour to start drinking the water again. How's everyone else today xoxo

    Going into week 5

It is really unlikely you can eat 7 ounces of food IF you are following the rule PROTEIN FIRST, VEGETABLES SECOND. Most of us can eat endless quantities of slider foods and larger quantities of liquids/soft foods. 3 weeks ago I mindlessly ate potato chips and there was no restriction whatsoever (fortunately I stopped myself quickly). I can eat a 5 oz Siggis yogurt with no restriction either - but that food is 15 G protein and 13 G Carbs/sugars. When I eat a solid, lean animal protein I can barely do 2 oz at a time. But 7 oz of a dense protein? No freaking way. Now, if you are eating 7 ounces of dense protein, you should definitely contact your surgeon because your sleeve should not be able to hold that much food. You are 3 months out and have lost 30 lbs. The sleeve does not work magic. You have to WORK THE SLEEVE. Anytime you don't do that it WILL cost you progress in your weight loss. I would recommend you track everything you eat and drink and if you are not following the PROTEIN FIRST principle, start following it. You can see my weight loss below - I am now at about 3 lbs a week. I am tweaking as I go. I have just added training/exercise into my routine. I think I can get this up to loosing 4, maybe 5 lbs a week for the next few months but we shall see.

Wow thats great! I usually have 1 to 2 shakes per day but I supplement with high protein yogurt which I add additional protein powder to and I also have broth and add protein powder to it. Sometimes I get tired of the sweetness of the shakes so I try to get protein in other ways. Only my large incision os sore but otherwise have not had any other issues and life is pretty normal. I'm glad you're doing well!

    Ice cream

CONGRATS on the weight loss! What about freezing low fat yogurt? What's you favorite flavor? The whole point of surgery is to help with portion control and healthier choices. Try low fat ice cream/fro-yo or sugar free chocolate pudding for the cravings. I stopped craving chocolate milk since I started the nasty protein shakes. My surgery is in 2 days.
  19. Greetings, I am 1 week post-op and ready to start my puree foods. I can tell you I really liked the ready to drink Muscle Milk Chocolate protein shake, drink it cold and it was really good. Also try Oikos triple zero Greek yogurt-mixed berry and strawberry were the best but stay away from the chocolate! EEEWWWW is all I can say about that awful stuff lol. Chicken noodle soup is very tasty just strain it first, it's a lot better than broth. Hope that helps.
  20. There are 2 in mine also. I stated what I did. Just because things are allowed doesn't mean that everyone eats them. I was allowed oatmeal but I never had it because I do not like it. I do not like yogurt or cottage cheese so I don't eat them. Same thing with crackers and toast, they are on my list I never had them. I just stuck with liquids because I didn't like the pressure from more solid foods. It is a pretty short time period. I was more interested in healing well than eating food.
  21. I could not eat beef for about 9 months- too heavy- I eat chicken fish yogurt cottage cheese and protein shakes made with kale protein power crush flax seed with some frozen fruit. I'm 16 months out lost 90 pounds . I do need to lose 15 more so I must increase my walking. and change up foods a bit- hard boil eggs are also a good fix. Protein is so important. I also had hair loss and that has cycled through and getting better. We made this decision for life and I'm so much better off mentally and physically because of this surgery saved my life. I was 62 yo when I had surgery- out of work 3 weeks. I remain grateful

    Help - Grumpy AF

Im on day 3 of 14 day pre op and am totally grumpy. I think my main problem is that I don't have a sweet tooth AT ALL and all these protein shakes and greek yogurts are all grossly sweet. Cottage cheese is keeping me sane because it sort of feels like I'm chewing something. I started mixing dill and garlic powder in non fat plain greek yogurt which is so much better to me than all that fake strawberry crap. I'm so jealous of all the people who get to eat one small meal for dinner!

  24. To continue vomiting for hours after consuming something isn't something to take lightly. Take a couple more weeks off of eating those foods, then try again (but next time, try pureeing them into a liquid consistency). Grilling and broiling meat with no oil.. nope nope. It has to be soft and lubricated. Gravy and mayonnaise are your friends for the next couple months with meat. Think about the meat you feed a baby.. your tummy needs it like that. And if you don't know... go to the baby food aisle and buy a jar. You don't need to eat it, but it will show what your tummy wants. Revisional surgeries don't give the bang of original procedures. It may take more work and a longer time, but you'll get there even so. I can't do protein shakes either.. but cottage cheese and yogurt are nice and smooth, eggs might work for you, refried beans, soft cheese (like fresh mozzarella). Tofu if it's soft (I don't know anything about it, really ). You can even try a few cashews. It's still a little early for nuts, but if you eat them one at a time, and chew it to paste, it might be ok for you. Cashews are the softest nuts, without skins, so start with them. Limit nuts to 1oz a day because they are so calorically dense.
  25. I am 7 weeks post op and am having difficulty with vomiting after eating meat or fish. I will chew it for at least 60 seconds and even after a bite or two I will throw up everything and it tends to continue for a few hours. I grill my meat or broil it with no oils and I do not understand why I can't keep it down. I can't even do protein shakes as they make me sick so i'm living off of yogurt and i have oatmeal in the morning. My doctor put me on meds but it's making it worse. I'm not losing a ton of weight. I have to add that my surgery was a revision to 2 previous nissen fundoplications so I also had work on my esophagus . Can anyone recommend anything else I can eat to get my protein? Also, any suggestions on incorporating fish or chicken without getting sick. Ren
