  1. Sigh

    HRT Question

I have been on them about a year- I call them my murder prevention patches- they keep me from murdering my teen kids. They sincerely helped with the quick to anger/rage feelings and calmed down the night sweater, etc— the doctor suggested i come off for surgery due to blood clot risk (similar to birth control)- and said to stay off for a minimum of two weeks after. I got a superficial blood clot in my hand (week after I’ve) and they said maybe even three weeks off til that vein heals. I think you have to stay off birth control at least a month after for the same reasons. It really does help though, like almost instantly.
  2. Hey! I've put on 2lbs this week, but I'm putting it down to the stress of moving house (I'm currently in the packing/clearing out stages) and not making room for exercise. I'm also officially back onto solid, normal foods so I'm assuming there will probably be some weight gain there too.

    HRT Question

Just curious why did you go off them (HRT) prior to surgery? I went on them about 3 months after surgery as I just wasn't coping with the effects surgery had on me and the constant anxiety, hot flushes etc it helped alot.i remember telling my Dr I can't do both but I'm wondering now if my reaction to surgery was hormone related.
  4. I am now 5 weeks post-op and I think I experienced my first taste of dumping syndrome yesterday. I had a chopped-up turkey sausage with some shredded cheese and a little mustard and I must have eaten it too fast because within minutes my stomach was cramping and I felt like I was going to throw up. This lasted for a couple of hours and then I got some pretty intense gas pain in my chest, which lasted close to an hour. On top of that I couldn't keep any water down during this time, so I got dehydrated......and the worst part was when I got hiccups on top of all of that. I had this exact meal the day before and everything settled fine, so I'm guessing I must have just eaten too fast.

    Horrible Constipation

I just got the Walmart brand tablets. its an orange and white bottle. It has definitely helped. I did daily till I was regular then cut back to 3 days a week. Here's the link. https://www.walmart.com/ip/Equate-Fiber-Therapy-Methylcellulose-Caplets-500-mg-100-Count/10324527?athbdg=L1100
  6. I love the idea! I have clothes in my closet up to 3 sizes down in jeans and 4 sizes down in tops. Its only been 3.5 months and I'm almost at the smallest size in tops ( I think I should be able to wear them comfortably in a month or so) but in the jeans I was an 18 and barely fit on the 14 and the 16 is loose. Your clothes will fit differently even if they are the same size you were before. I will wait at least a month after surgery to buy something to incentivize you especially if you have clothes that will fit in the meantime. I do shop here and there (cheap clothes) because I believe I do better when I wear clothes that fit me better and project some confidence. I have bought stuff in a smaller size with the idea of fitting by month 6, but somehow they fit even if the weight on the scale hasn't shift much.
  7. How long did you have issues with gas pain? I'm 2 1/2 weeks post op, and still experience sharp pains on my left side and center just under my left breast. It is worse after drinking, and this pain is not helped by walking, but Gas-X does seem to help. I am walking regularly. It's the only pain/issue I have had. I am still on full liquid diet. I remember gas pain lasting a long time after my lap band, but it was all in my shoulder. Anyone else experience this and how long did it last?

    Horrible Constipation

It was a weekly issue for me for a while. For me, magnesium wasn't enough, so I started adding a fiber pill to my vitamin regimen 3 days a week and I haven't had another problem.
  9. Sigh

    HRT Question

So I am 10 days post op from self pay Mexico sleeve— I stopped my HRT one week ahead of surgery, but am curious of what your teams have advised on restarting HRT (patches). I have a call into my doctor, but would like to hear your thoughts on it… Did you lower your dose when you lost weight? Start at the same dose prior to surgery? Etc? Any info appreciated related to the Hormone replacement patch. I had a hysterectomy in November 2022, and have been on HRT a year prior— still have ovaries but at 52 I doubt they are helping!
  10. You should call your surgeon to make sure. I was able to swallow pills right away and was given Tylenol 3, bp medication while in the hospital with a sip of water. I wasn't allowed to start vitamins till 30 days after but I was taking the omeprazole, and ursodiol as soon as I was discharged.
  11. I actually havent been taking the metformin yet but i will keep that in mind thankyou so much! I actually took two panadol twice today as i really hurt my neck in the last week. I didnt even think until after.
  12. I had my sleeve last week on March 9. I’m past most of the discomfort and pain now. Fluids are going down fairly easy now. It’s been mostly an emotional roll coaster for me as I grasp my new reality. Several moments with buyers remorse which sounds like a common reaction with many patients.

    Horrible Constipation

TMI, but I nearly passed out in the shower (not on) when attempting to use an enema. I was in so much pain. Enema didn't work and went the manual route, which was a big relief. Hurt for a few days after but all better after a week. I try to really keep on top of my liquids, too. Constipation is awful. Hope you feel better soon!
  14. I was allowed to swallow pills as long as they were the size of pencil eraser or smaller as soon as I got home from the hospital (I've heard other people on here say they were allowed to swallow pills that were smaller than an M&M). Bigger pills I had to wait two or three weeks on, or until I was able to do it without difficulty. Only two of my pills were larger than that, but fortunately one was calcium (so I just got a chewable version), and the other was one that the PA at my clinic said was OK to skip for a couple of weeks. so I would say if you were able to swallow it without any problem, I wouldn't worry about it.
  15. Hi guys, So today i was finally able to come home after my procedure. I'm one week post op and after one hell of a week and a long drive home i've just realised i swallowed some panadol tablets whole twice. Theres no pain and it doesnt feel blocked but im still in the hyper concerned post surgery haze i worry what might occur from this. Anyone had a similar situation or any suggestions? The hospital told me i needed to buy chewable multi vitamins and gave me small tablets in hospital. They even told me to keep taking my metformin with no mention of crushing it so it really slipped my mind.

    Should I get surgery

I went with bypass because I also had GERD before surgery. Not everyone has issues of their GERD getting worse after getting the sleeve, but I was afraid I'd be one of the unlucky ones whose did, and I wasn't willing to take that risk. But some people do take the risk, and for some it turns out OK. I'm pretty much on autopilot when it comes to taking vitamins. I take a small handful when I get up in the morning, and another small handful around dinner time. And my iron before I go to bed. I really don't even think about it much anymore. But yea, slacking off on vitamins has more consequences for bypassers than it does for sleevers, so it really is important to stay on top of them. taking tiny sips of water and eating microscopic pieces and portions is really just the first few weeks or months after surgery. I drink water at the same rate I always did, and I eat pretty normally now (except in smaller portions). If you swallow too big a piece of food, your stomach will let you know. I love my bypass and wish I would have had it years before I actually did. It's one of the best decisions I've ever made. I'd do it again in a heartbeat!
  17. I am currently 3/4X or 28/30, I guess. I just had my 1st dietician meeting a week ago. I wish I could move faster to get to surgery. I have thought about this and done research for the last 3 years, finally got my mind ready to go. I have met with my pulmonologist, met with cardiologist and have my echocardiogram & stress test, & mammogram scheduled. I have began adjusting my diet and think I am doing pretty good. I just need to figure out how I can make my body let me start some kind of exercise. I am ready to wear smaller sizes - my last shopping trip to buy pants that were more comfy put me in tears when I saw my entire body in the dressing room mirror. I have kept my jeans from each stage from about 16/18 on up to 24/26. Before surgery I will hang them in size order. I am going to get with a local WLS support group to see if they would like to start a clothing pantry - where you can come and exchange to the size you need as you lose.
  18. Wow what a bummer! Especially from Target, I definitely wouldn't spend the $70 on that as there's a chance you will only fit in those for WEEKS. It's a cool idea but definitely go cheap! I used to wear 3/4x clothes, bought 1x to enjoy my weight loss & left it behind in 2 months. I'm now down to Mediums & regret spending that $$ on the XL's!

    back in the hospital

I want to thank you ALL. I truly appreciate the love and support from you all. I never knew that I could meet strangers that have so much pouring love and support for me... we are now family. I just got discharged today so I'm very thankful for this. Through this all I'm going to remain positive and hopeful. It has been very rough and difficult for me BUT I know things could be worst so this keeps me motivated. I follow up with my Dr in 2 weeks so hopefully she have good news for me. I'm dreading to hear that I will have to have another go around for this same procedure. This hospital stay have been far more difficult. Aside from it being a long stay. I was in so much pain.. like 3xs more from my original sleeve surgery. I will keep faith and a smile. ❤️

    chia seeds/flaxseed

I'm on day 13 of the liquid diet pre-op & I just read on my surgery papers that says not to take flaxseed 5 days prior to surgery plus some other stuff and I've been adding flaxseed to most of the protein shakes I've been making lately (maybe 3-4 days now) and my gastric sleeve surgery is Tuesday... Should I be worried??! 😬

    March 23 Surgery/ Pre-Opt Diet

I'm rounding the corner to my March 16 surgery date and have been on the diet for two weeks (I started a few days early to give myself some rope). *My* scale says I'm down 17 lbs from my highest weight but of course I don't believe it because my doctor's scale is always a +4lb difference - old thinking patterns creeping in. 🥴 I feel a lot better and it is noticeable to others and my clothes fit better.
  22. I know I'm writing this after you've had your surgery but I wanted to add my experience. After my bypass I had a lidocaine IV drip which is a medication similar to what's in the On-Q. I had very little pain after surgery. My mom just had a knee joint replacement surgery 3 days ago and has an On-Q device. She's only taken 4 small doses of any narcotic since the day of surgery. March 2022 Surgery Buddies

My surgery is March 22nd! Was waiting on final authorization from my insurance, but I got the final go last week. 10 days to go!
  24. as the others have said, there's really nothing you can do to help with the hair loss other than keep on top of your protein and supplements so it won't be any worse than it already is. Hair loss is due to the surgery's trauma to your body (It can be a side effect of any major surgery - (or childbirth, too)) plus the super low calorie intake we have the first few weeks post-op. By the time it starts falling out, the "damage" has already been done. It'll stop after about three months and will grow back. Fortunately, I lost very little hair, so it wasn't noticeable. But some who lose more go for a shorter cut or wear scarves or something to take the focus off hair. A few people have heavy enough loss that they buy a wig - although that much loss doesn't seem to be that common.
