    September 18 - LBL

Thanks KD! I may just stick with the spanx. I am hoping that my drains will come out next week and that will end the problem. Did you have swelling issues after 2 weeks? Did you have weight gain right after the surgery? K
  3. So i had my surgery on the 18th of september 2008. I weighed myself today and i didnt lose any weight, actually i think i gained like 2 pounds. How long before you notice any weight loss after surgery? And is weight gaining normal right after suregery? And yes i am following the diet correctly.
  4. I do understand. I took prednisone for a few months many years ago and the weight gain and other affects were awful during that short span. I understand WW and/or dieting in general is difficult which is why you got the band, but I was trying to offer a suggestion that may help you to minimize your weight gain so that you don't have to lose even more weight once you get to feeling better and get your band in working order again. I'm not really sure what it is you would like us to say to you or what kind of suggestions you are looking for so I'll just bow out now rather than say the wrong thing.

    Bread/pasta question

Bread, Pasta, and sugar is what fueled my binging and weight gain, with an incessant appetite and non-stop hunger. With my calories limited at 800, I need to be diligent in using those 800 for Protein and veggies. So, there is no interest now in turning back. No more grain products for me. I do not want to open that door.
  6. I was sleeved 12-19-11. I came home 12-21-11 and found out I gained 10 lbs (331 lbs). It finally came off 12-25-11. I did not know about the weight gain. I felt cheated. But today 12-29-11 I weigh 214. I feel better.
  7. This pregnancy was absolutely not planned. I ovulated 5 days before I should have this past cycle. Prior to this cycle, my body was like clockwork. Anyway, that early ovulation resulted in me now being 5 weeks pregnant. I am scared. I still have about 40-50 lbs I want to lose and now I'm worried this pregnancy will derail everything. I was already having a hard enough time with slow weight loss. I am going to try my hardest to continue to eat well and stay active this pregnancy to minimize the weight gain as much as possible while still growing a healthy baby. Are there any ladies experienced with this? Were you able to keep weight gain down? Did you continue losing after you gave birth? I'm really looking for some encouragement here. This should be a happy time! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  8. I went into gastric bypass surgery with chronic illness and many medical issues, I also had my gallbladder removed at the same time. It’s been a rough road and it took me a lot of trial and error to find things I could tolerate and I took it slow. Right of the bat I was sick and had a lot of problems with getting into purée foods. I found a protein powder that worked. It’s quite possible that you were consuming things that you were allergic or had sensitivity to. Not all protein shakes are equal either. For me I did best with PEScience protein powder. I stuck to very simple things , very low carb as well. And always protein first. I got protein soup mixes from BariatricPal. Protein shots for when I could barely tolerate anything. Instead of purée meat I started mixing protein powder with Greek yogurt. Even eggs at that point were a no go. Eventually I slowly added a soft boiled egg here and there. Until it’s become fairly regular. A Low calorie low carb protein bar for breakfast with tea. My lunches are simple even now I’m a year in. I started with some BariatricPal protein pasta, then slowly changed it over to adding veggie burger with an egg on top. Dinner well that’s almost always Greek yogurt with protein powder. And some sugar free topping. And a baby banana. It took things extremely slow. I still struggle and have issues. I always will that’s just me personally. But I think you shouldn’t be afraid. Things are probably different now, the surgery has improved, you can have a better nutrition guide. Maybe the dietary guidelines included something causing you to dump too often. Or you were not mindful of portions and eating slow. A lot of times surgeons don’t give proper nutrition guidance and that leads to problems. My nutritionist was very helpful. Although for me I’d already been following low carb for years I needed the added tool of bypass to help me. Learn to be mindful of your body and what your pouch doesn’t like. And take it slow and easy. As long as you get protein there’s no race to eating solid food or even purée. I find it helps to take daily note of weight, food intake, protein and calories. Protein should be based on weight starting at 0.36 grams protein per 1lb body weight. And also no more than 5 grams of sugar in a meal. Especially starting out. I guess to some it might seem obsessive but it’s helped me and yes I’m ocd and on the Autism spectrum. I use the notes section on my iPad and the same format each day and note if I see a doctor and any health issues that come up. For me it was fight to get the tool of gastric bypass surgery to help against weight gain from metabolic disorders and inability to exercise, a fight that’s exhausted me most of my life ... or just give up. it sounds Like this is very important to your wellbeing. There really is no choice here but to take that step forward. I wish you all the best in your journey.
  9. The hardest part is not being able to enjoy my food like I used to I take a few bites and I'm done and food still doesn't taste the same for me...but I won't miss all the weight gain that's for sure

The weight gain is from all the iv fluids... Totally normal and drops off after a week

    how could this possibly be?

The weight gain could be from the sodium in the soup. I agree that you just need to eat healthy with the correct portions and the weight will come off. Hormones and sodium can really effect our weight sometimes.
  12. I have hypothyroidism. Was discovered in my last pregnancy nearly 12 years ago. Your thyroid function is essential for metabolism. The medication does not cause weight gain. In fact, around my 3 month mark my weight loss seemed stalled for a few weeks. My TSH was very elevated and my medication was increased. My weight started coming off.

    3/24 Sleeve buddy wanted

Hi meimei. I'm in the same boat as you with the RA. There was research done that shows Bariatric surgery has a positive effect on people with RA. I was diagnosed 9 years ago- right after I turned 40. Went through every drug they had. Finally got some relief from Actemra. Get infused with that in addition to my methotrexate shots weekly along with plaquenil. My weight gain was mostly due to being on 60-80 mg daily of prednisone for 6 years. The worst best drug out there. It was the only thing that allowed me any mobility while trying to find something that helped me. I even ended up allergic to Orencia! That was lovely lol. So between lack of movement and the pred- boom! Obese. Funny thing- I was completely flaring prior to surgery and assumed it would be more of the same after. Not! I've been hitting anywhere from 3-5 miles walking a day. Who knew? I'm not allowed to resume methotrexate or Actemra until 30 days out. Kind of wondering if I will? I suppose the best bet is to have some blood work done to check disease activity level. I don't want to go two steps back, but heck- the thought of no RA meds is certainly appealing!!!!
  14. I’ll try and keep this as brief as possible. Sorry if I rant on and on. As I went from 240 lbs to 390 lbs between 2009-2019 I slowly hid myself away from friends and family. The truth is I was in denial about how bad things were getting and I was embarrassed. I was ashamed of how I couldn’t keep up with my friends just walking around the city or fitting into booths at restaurants for family milestones. I was out of breath walking into work from the parking lot. I felt like if I could avoid these things in front of other people, if other people couldn’t confirm how limited I had become, it somehow made it less true. I have missed SO many adventures and huge important events in my loved ones lives simply because I was physically unable. This hurts my heart. In 2018 I ditched a good friend’s bachelorette weekend out of town because I was so anxious about how I wouldn’t be able to keep up with everyone. Like literally I could not walk around and I felt ridiculous going to clubs with girls wearing their best outfits and me in an oversized T-shirt. By that point I couldn’t stand for 5 mins without my lower back screaming. Our friendship has not been the same since. I have always thought that was the turning point in our friendship. Now fast forward to late 2019. I happened to be invited to another good friend’s bachelorette weekend. This is a friend I met in college and we were so close we lived together for a couple of years. This is also when my depression/weight gain really got bad. I did my best to hide it, but I’m sure it was obvious. Over the last 7 years I have make excuses to avoid meeting up with her because she is so active. I even prayed she wouldn’t ask me to be a bridesmaid. How sad is that? I really didn’t think I could make it through the dress shopping bit. Pre-surgery I was 390 lbs and a size 26. This friend has run the NYC marathon and I was at least 220 lbs heavier than any other girl in her friend circle. When I was invited on the bachelorette weekend I immediately thought of ways to get out of it. I told one of the maids of honor that I didn’t think it would be a good idea since it was still early after surgery and I wasn’t sure how I’d feel. Well it’s been almost 5 months and I’ve been so lucky to have zero complications. My mobility is much better too. I am also sober by choice. I was never a big drinker anyways. I partied pretty hard as a teen so by the time I got to college I was somewhat past that phase. It doesn’t make me feel good and now with a sleeve I feel like alcohol serves me no purpose. Anyways what I am looking for is real honest advice. I feel immense guilt over declining this invite. I have thought about how I would feel if I was my friend. I could see how she would be upset or disappointed. Am I wrong to not go? I don’t drink and I’m trying so hard to stick to my diet. I know if I really wanted to I could make it work. I don’t want people to tell me what I want to hear. I guess I just want someone to say they understand what I’m saying and feeling. I don’t have anyone in my family or friends that are even overweight. I feel like no one can relate. Has anyone else been through this? Did things get better as you lost weight?

    Uncertain futures

@@VSGAnn2014 I am sorry you have to be "experienced" in the world of cancer, BUT I am THRILLED that your husband is in remission!!!!! That is our goal, as well. Obviously! The days can be challenging, and the nighttimes sometime even more so. For both he and I. Once he has the PET scan, that should help, for it is the unknowing of the extent of his cancer that is so worrisome. He should have the test next week, I hope. I will fight for it, one way or another. They haven't seen me mad, yet, and I don't envy those who will see it. I don't do "mad" well! Yesterday's "play-day" was much-needed, and has given me some energy for awhile. I tried melatonin for sleep, and it didn't seem to phase me. I'll try it again another time. I don't like to take stuff for sleep, as I need to hear what is going on, especially Dave. But I get bits of sleep here and there, quickie-naps during the day when he is at work and the dogs outside. I am maintaining! I just bought a slushy maker that also makes shakes, and that is what he is craving...chocolate milkshakes. It makes a single serving for him, and he just stirs it until it is the consistency he likes. I hope he can get more calories in that way. I'm going to see if he can add Protein powder to it without it getting gross. He needs all he can get. He fights me sometimes on getting him to eat all he should (and drink, too). We have to get his body ready for the surgery and radiation that is to come. The healthier, the better! Was there any tricks you used to get more into your husband, and to help with weight gain? I think I'm going to gain weight just looking at all the fattening stuff he is supposed to eat!!! Quite a challenge keeping us both where we're supposed to be! Any tips or tricks you guys used would be much appreciated, in getting Dave through this challenge, the more the better! And again, thanks everyone for your continued prayers and support. With it we have EVERYTHING! Hugs to all!!!!
  16. Hello my fellow sleevers I am looking for some insight / stories on pregnancy after being sleeved. I am knocking on my 1 year 10/6/17 and the husband and I have decided we want to try for baby #2. I really want to try but am a little worried about weight gain. Pre surgery I was 325 size 20/3x. Before I got pregnant with my 1st I was 230ish size 16 and gained almost 100lbs with that pregnancy My fear is I'll end up back where I was before surgery. I am current 225 size 12/L which I'm happy at. I also have PCOS which scares me Has anyone got pregnant after surgery? If so how was it/is it? Did you have an issue or gain way more weight than you expected? Were you able to lose the weight? Thank you all for reading

Best ways to get past a stall?

2 words - water and shock! It's a great way to kick-start your body during a stall. First thing, eat. Don't diet. Gain a pound. Eat things you don't normally eat. Don't be afraid to eat something off your diet plan. Don't follow your plan. Skip the protein for a day. Don't drink as much fluid. Gain a water pound. Your body stalls because it gets into a pattern. Get it out of the pattern. Shock your body. Then, go back on your meal plan and drink water. More than usual. Water only, lay off other fluids and any artificial sweeteners. Do that for two days. Your body will not only lose the water weight gain but be shocked back into the normal weight loss pattern. Great advice from my nutritionist but it worked like a charm. It's a marathon, not a sprint, and your body can't be constantly in a weight loss mode if it becomes too complacent. It needs some change from time to time. Good luck! And don't worry about stalls. They are natural. Everyone here has experienced them, myself included and the advice I got from these good people really helped. I wish you all the best! You're doing great!

    I'm kicking myself right now!!

Thank you all for your encouraging words of wisdom. LOL...I guess I should have explained better... 1. I am an honorary member of the chocolate Lover's Association...in other words, I am a chocoholic. 2. Chocolate, sweets, etc. are the things I binged on for years, causing the weight gain, leading to the Lap Band, etc. 3. I've had 3 fills and I'm still losing very slowly (banded June 24) Also, the way I just mindlessly reached for the candy bar, like a zombie and had it eaten before I realized what I was doing, scares me crazy and I can't explain why. It's like...what is it going to take to get me to lay off that junk once and for all? However, you are right, I should not beat myself up over one candy bar. It's just now I want to go home and eat a whole bag. But I won't...I won't...I won't...
  19. OH you wanted to lose weight and have this surgery???? Silly.... (I can be sarcastic...I've been down your road my dear). Let me just say first, I'm sorry you are suffering! I was down for just under two months, 22 days of that in the hospital having my lungs drained and a second surgery five weeks after the first. My first surgery was aug 23 and the second sept 28. I GAINED 40lbs going through much of what you did. TPN feedings, tube feedings etc. Weight gain and retention after such a major struggle is normal because your body is holding onto all of those extra fluids just in case it needs to protect itself again. I saw that gain slowly drop a few weeks after I got out of the hospital (Oct 6th) and then after that I took some dramatic losses as it finally decided I was going to be ok and the retention gave up it's battle. I'm down half of my goal weight (over 40lbs) loss now, just over six weeks after I returned home, but I was told it could take up to four months for my body to normalize again, so I was actually lucky. Unfortunately due to the trauma you have the same issue. But I assure you, it will go away. You're still too weak to get much movement I'm sure and likely you are in early stages of food I'd guess? Just like the healing, you have to give it a bit more time than anyone who went a more "normal" recovery route. My battle was hell and frankly I was just happy to come out alive. Weight loss is a bonus Right now I'd just focus on getting in all of your Protein so you heal properly this time, and your fluids, and rest as much as you need. You'll find you will see those pounds go away as your energy increases, but don't push it. You have been through the wringer, let your body rest! Take care!!!

    Birth Control and Surgery

Yep still get periods - it's pretty unhealthy in my books not to get them!! Might be a reason for weight gain ... I have always had no problem periods and they (for me) are lighter with the IUD in place. This isn't the case for everyone though.

Did The Op Without A Nutritionist, help

First off you should ask them what your post op diet should be. Most surgeons keep you on liquids a minimum of 1 week, 2 more likely. Then you can move to the full liquid stage like creamy soups., then a week or 2 later you need to move to mushies or soft fooods ie. chili, tuna salad, potatoe. Then it is onto solids. When you go to solids you need to eat 60 grams of protein. Chicken, fish, eggs, yoguart, milk, beef those types of foods. At this point you may see a slight weight gain becuase your calorie intake will be more. Try and stick to 800-1k calories a day. You most likely will experience more hunger and no restriction during this time. Once that starts along with slowed down weight loss it will be time for a fill. It may take several fills until you feel less hungry and satisfied. Good luck.
  22. 2 pounds up this morning on the 3 week anniversary of surgery. No change in diet of course... I heard about a dreaded stall, but weight gain? And how long did your stall last?
  23. ok.....Here we go. how should I address a large weight gain with my adult son? he is an RN and is over 250lbs. he seems to eat quite a bit of fast food. hubby says he is a nurse he knows how what to do...son says he is eating less carbs. he had a 12pack of diet 7up he brought to the house on the first night and take out from hardees and snacked on stuff like Graham crackers. we were surviving hurricane matthew and son stayed over since he had no power at his house. I see him about every 3-4 months. he asks me about my WLS and I have been tempted to mention his weight gain.

    Swelling of the lower body

Why did your doctor do a complete unfill? Were you having problems? If not, it doesn't make sense. Much of your weight gain might be fluid retention which might explain the swelling in your lower body. This is serious and something that shouldn't be explained as normal and to be tolerated. What exactly is your body supposed to be adjusting to? Swelling and/or flluid retention and a weight gain of 50 pounds in 4 weeks puts a tremendous strain on the heart. Insist that they address this problem or go to another doctor (maybe your family doctor?).
  25. Just wanted to know if any other sucess stories have experienced what I am now experiencing. I lost over 170lbs with the lap band but got down way below my goal weight. I went back to the doctor for an adjustment & they emptied the band completely. Since then I have had a tremendous amount of swelling in my lower body & a significant weight gain (50lbs in 4 weeks). The nurse told me it was just something I would have to put up with for several months as my body readjusted. Has anybody else had these complications?
