SEPTEMBER 2018 SURGERIES AND SUCCESS
Frustr8 replied to Frustr8's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Well tomorrow night Tomkitten and I have our Apnea Retitration, on the 14th I have my Bariatric Clinic visit, haven't seen them since April, I'm told although I am 11 months TODAY this counts as my Yearly Evaluation. Since they have ignored any pleas for help, found me rather unimportant, not of real interest, either I will leave there feeling better or Ka- Ka will be hitting the Fan! Ah --!WE SHALL see Which it may BE, But time now to get out of bed, start on my myriad of V8tamins, Minerals and Medications and let the Chips Fall where They May. I am arthritic, wake up in pain, so am not too hopeful as I start my DAY but tell myself THIS STILL BEATS DEATH ALL HOLLOW, and it will Be as It Be--- I am down to 188.8 from 365+, my arms , legs and mind still work, don't see very clearel -
just be careful - transfer addiction is a risk for bariatric patients. I've seen more than a few people post on various internet forums that they developed alcoholism after bariatric surgery. That's not to say you can't enjoy a drink once in awhile. But...watch it.

I was really lucky since the bariatric surgeon and my PCM are in the same organization and it was as simple as asking him for the referral and he said I met all the criteria so it happened quite easily.

I had GERD pre-surgery. No way would I get the sleeve. GERD doesn't get worse for *everyone* who gets the sleeve, but it does for a sizable minority. There are several people on bariatric internet forums who've revised to bypass because of it. I would definitely get the bypass. I suspect this surgeon is just more familiar with the sleeve - and it's also a quicker, easier surgery, so less complicated for him. I'd be really tempted to get a second opinion. You're the one who'll have to leave with the potential GERD problem, not him.

Slow down with weight loss
AZhiker replied to ALISON Easton's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I did not realize you were talking about full blown, knock-your-socks-off work outs. I agree that iron man/woman workouts can wait until later. Many bariatric patients would not be able to do those kind of work outs until some substantial weight comes off, anyway. But building in some reasonable cardio and strengthening exercises should start from the beginning, IMHO. -

I’ve got a winner!!! (Calcium Citrate Chews)
KCgirl061 replied to GingerSlim's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
These are my favorite too! I buy them from the Bariatric Pal store for about $34 each, I participate in the forums and about every 3 months redeem my points for gift cards to use. And because I order 3 month supplies at a time, I always qualify for the free shipping! -
I’ve got a winner!!! (Calcium Citrate Chews)

I have tried both the GNC and Bariatric Advantage chews. Most people really DO love them but, for whatever reason, I can't stand either of them. I just ended up going with calcium citrate pills instead. They have a few advantages I like, at least for me. No taste(!), cheap, purchased about anywhere, and they don't melt in a hot car. (Ask me how I know this one... lol.) I do like that there are so many options out there for different tastes, though. -
Slow down with weight loss
AZhiker replied to ALISON Easton's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I respectfully disagree with Dr. V. Other bariatric surgeons will say quite the opposite. I think exercise needs to be part of the total package from the very beginning. That can take the form of walking, light weights, climbing stairs, yoga, bicycling...….. I think more studies show that people who do NOT exercise and build that into their lifestyle have slower weight loss, will not lose as much total weight, and will have a harder time maintaining. -

I tried the GNC Calcium Citrate chews and they have an awful taste to them. I was dreading having to eat one of these 3 times a day. I tried a few others, and I had to hold my nose while choking them down. I looked at some reviews online and saw some really good ones for Bariatric Advantage Calcium Citrate Chews. I ordered the assorted fruit flavors so I can see if there was any one I liked. In the bag is Orange, raspberry, strawberry & lemon. Got them in the mail super quick. Only 1-2 days. To my absolute delight, these are amazing! They taste like Starburst candy. I actually look forward to eating them! They are $36 for a bag of 90 (one month supply) and worth every penny! They have many other flavors too...chocolate, caramel, etc. This find was way too good not to share! The weight management center at my hospital sells them in their office, so I can get them there for the same price minus the shipping. If you come across them...grab some!!! https://www.bariatricadvantage.com/item/calcium_citrate_chewy_bites_500mg -
I was sleeved 7 weeks ago and during the day I am fine but at night I have a burning sensation in my throat. I realized this may be acid reflux? I never had it before my surgery and had I known this would occur I may have chosen bariatric surgery instead. Does anyone have the same symptoms? Is this forever?

Weighing food (how do you measure yours?) cup or scale
Carolina Rose posted a topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Hello Bariatric family. Do you weigh your solid/soft food on a scale? Or are you using a volume method and using a measuring cup to measure ounces? It seems one way will be more food than the other. I am pre-op and scheduled for Bypass surgery this Wednesday August 7th. Thanks in advance. -
I didn't suggest 'loading', I offered an approved by my dietician way to help reach the daily goal,I very clearly stated that I wouldn't be having it as my sole source of protein intake. Nowhere did I say only consume collagen as protein nor did I say go higher than your recommended target. Yes, she did ok bone broth which I make regularly so all good there thanks. Of course, the bottom line is to follow our OWN diet plan given to us by our Bariatric team and not take sole advice from unqualified randoms online. On a side note, I understand you were feeling frustrated yesterday, but you need to remember we all have our OWN journey to travel, lots of us are VERY anxious about our surgery coming up and still fighting the food demons in our heads. So, to come online in a group specifically aimed at sharing our feelings and being shot down by longer-term members and name-calling is pretty disgusting behaviour from Adults. IF you are fed up with members, just DO NOT come into the forum. Nowhere does it say you are obliged to hand out advice or ridicule people who are struggling or to add sarcastically, condescending 'lols' and I really hope that when you have struggled no one swore at you or called you a snowflake. Onwards and upwards.

Gastric Sleeve vs Gastric Balloon
New&Improved replied to cam128's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
VSG is a very good procedure 1000s of people have lost weight and kept it off. One guy I know lost 200lbs over 2 years and doing well. It is technically the least restrictive out of all but still good enough for what you need as long as your follow surgeons advice to the letter. Pcp is NOT a bariatric doctor! And IF sleeve ends up Not doing enough it can easily be converted to bypass or DS (Being 5ft2 your ideal weight is like 120?) -
As an Asian American and bariatric patient who's family once owned a take out restaurant my advice is to, STAY AWAY FROM THE CHINESE FOOD. It is not healthy in the least bit. Between the fats, sodium and other flavor enhancers you are basically eating fast food. After WLS I have stayed away from fast foods. Unless you want just plain steamed chicken and veggies (skip the rice) there is nothing good to be had by eating Chinese take out food. Now is the time to reset your "food universe" get rid of the bad foods and introduce the healthy foods that will help with long term weight loss maintenance. Your over all health is improving and by working on mindful eating and making better choices that good health will stay with you for a long time. As NYjenn wrote.......... Good luck and good health.

Hi all, how are you all getting on? I had my gastric by pass on the 2nd July and I'm 4 weeks post, 3 weeks on liquids, 2 on pureed and 2 on soft food. I'm on pureed right now. I lost 14lbs in the 1st two weeks. I've been on a stall for 2 weeks. Would love to make some friends on here as I'm from the UK and bariatric surgery isn't popular or a talked about thing. So I'm feeling alone, I hope your all doing well. Xxx Sent from my SM-G955F using Tapatalk

Watching grass grow
FluffySaysForkIt! replied to Libby63's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
All of the above is great advice. I also made a list of things I wanted to do, a kind of bucket list of things after weightloss, that were not possible/ fun at my highest weight. Even only 8 weeks out, I have already managed some and it is very motivating. I collected recipes that I knew would be bariatric friendly, too. I made a binder for them so they would be ready to go when I was. My family has since implemented a "new recipe" night every Saturday where we cook and test one out together. (Makes a great replacement for eating out.) Check out the Food Before and After thread link below for lots of pics of yummy healthy food people eat post op for some great inspiration. Food before/after Hang in there, you can make this time count for sure! -
Bravo for turning your passion for nutrition and fitness into a career. People that never had surgery build up their fitness level, become athletes, trainers, and it’s not an issue. Your workout sounds normal to me. Over doing it does not sound like your situation. You have been working with your trainer and know what you’re doing, Mixing up cardio, muscle groups, two rest days. You are injury free. Why do bariatric patients get judged if they decide to get fit or into sports??? Exercising too much would be - repeat injuries, malnourished, mentally unstable, no rest days, working out while ill or injured., not making time for other areas in your life.

I know my Bariatric Clinic works with patients that were done in Mexico, specifically patients with complications.

Gastric Sleeve vs Gastric Balloon
KCgirl061 replied to cam128's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I personally don't understand how the balloon makes sense to anyone. Why would you want something expensive and short term - so you lose weight from restriction for a couple months then that restriction is gone. Wont you just regain the weight? You need to talk to a bariatric physician, not your family physician. Your family doctor is no expert, mine certainly wasn't. I found I was more educated doing my own research before approaching him about it . And then I had to spend 45 minutes talking him into supporting me through the medically supervised weightloss. Yes the sleeve is irreversible and infections can be deadly. But the same can be said for virtually every surgery, sleeve gastrectomies aren't a large infection risk! Infections are possible yes, but your biggest risk for surgery isn't infection, its a leaky staple line. Sleeve surgery has less possible complications than hip replacement surgery - yet you'd never hear your doctor talk you out of getting a hip replaced if they felt like thats what you needed for your health, even though it too is irreversible, a risk for infection and if there is something wrong you can't "put it back". Your family doctor likely sees bariatrics as an elective, cosmetic procedure and is trying to scare you out of it without considering how much your health can improve with the benefits of weight loss surgery. -
I am going with Dr Illan this month after reviewing a lot of doctors this year. I know only the best surgeries are uploaded to youtube but his are beautiful. I say that as one who has been in an OR. I only say that to let you know the doctor you chose is good too. The main reason for the reply is that there are good bariatric surgeons who will follow you in the states. Make sure to do your research on the doctor, get all medical records in hand and a copy of the surgery film if possible. Dr Illan has flash drives for purchase I read somewhere, or bring your own. Call local doctors and inquire if they will do follow up. Things are changing. Best wishes. Family is just worried for you. Again research a lot.
