  1. I have been honest with her a couple of times now... It's funny you say that because just a month ago she told me about these bariatric friendly recipes for banana bread and brownies so when she handed me the loaf I got excited and asked if that's what it was and she said nope just regular banana bread. I will try to make suggestions to her as well. Anything will help. I love her endlessly but she does stuff like this sometimes. It wouldn't be AS bad if she didn't know exactly what I was going through and exactly what I need to do. Thank you. Sent from my Z965 using BariatricPal mobile app

    State Fair-Eye Opener

Last night my husband and I went to the State Fair and let me tell you, my eyes were really opened to the fact that the majority of food sold at the Fair can NOT be consumed by people who had Bariatric surgery! From Corn Dogs, Funnel cakes, cheese steaks, French fries, kettle corn, snow cones and even tacos all delicious foods I used to indulge in I had to walk away from. Amazingly my new "stomach" did not feel one hunger pain while I was at the Fair for 4 hours. I was really shocked at the poor quality of food and two months ago (before I had vgs) I would have indulged like everyone else. I went home and ate a nice home cooked dinner. Yay me! 3. My mom was sleeved 2 years ago in September. I was sleeved this year May 21. My mom has always been an incredible cook and baker. We come from a long line of Sicilian women who love to cook and eat. This surgery has for sure changed her life and how she cooks and bakes and I've only just started figuring all of this stuff out. Tell me why, though, she will not only bring the not-so-bariatric-friendly food she makes to my house but on top of that bake me a whole loaf of banana bread? ??? She knows it's my favorite so that's nice of her but a whole loaf? I have a 13 year old who is obese and I've changed her diet as well. My mom knows all of these things. She said, "You can have a little piece and it won't hurt you. After that use self-control." Sigh... I ate a little piece of it. IT MADE ME VOMIT so I suppose self-control won't be an issue. I never want to see banana bread again. I've been sick all day. It's not the first time she has done this kind of thing. I just don't know why she does it. I don't understand why she doesn't remember the beginning of her journey. Why would she even want to tempt me or my daughter? I have even talked to her about it. Okay, I'm sorry. Rant over. I just really needed to vent to some people who may understand my frustration. I am, too, disappointed in myself. Sent from my Z965 using BariatricPal mobile app

    Looking for encouraging positive stories

I’m 14 months post surgery. I’ll turn 55 in November. I was 209 lbs at my surgery consultation. I’m 115 lbs today. This surgery/weight loss tool has been everything I needed to help me take control again. I had the determination, the motivation and the required knowledge but my body never seemed to let me “win” at weight loss and kicking my diabetes. I have been off insulin and oral meds since a few weeks before surgery (I chose to start eating a Bariatric plan early to lose ahead of time). Its been so freeing...so life changing. If you work the program, you will lose. The rate will vary but the results will be there in the end!

    3 weeks post op

I think you've definitely come to the right place. This cite is perfect for asking questions, getting support, and just plain ranting (in a positive way) to yourself out loud. Think of it as the Facebook for Bariatric support. The stories, support, and wealth of experiences here has truly been invaluable.

    Pre-op and obsessed?

YES! I am totally obsessed. Been thinking about doing it for years and I have my first appointment with my bariatric surgeon tomorrow, so I’m at the beginning. Scared, nervous, confused, excited, you name it, I am it.
  7. I consider this my biggest success. Not the weight loss. But the fact that I am now pursuing my personal trainer certifications with a specialty in obesity. I want to specifically work with bariatric patients who may struggle to exercise, and may rely on the surgery to just help with diet when it should be a comprehensive lifestyle change. I am so excited that I may someday make a difference to even just one person. One person that I was just not even a year ago. This surgery has changed not only my weight, but my mentality and my life. I want to pay it forward. Sent from my SM-G930R4 using BariatricPal mobile app
  8. Ok so I completed my sleep study and was told I have mild sleep apnea result is 6.1. I have kaiser insurance and I’m starting options aug 5. Hopefully having surgery in November. I know Bariatric surgery can improve sleep apnea should I even bother getting the machine? I’m hoping after surgery it’ll be resolved and then I have wasted money on the machine and equipment. Anyone else have similar?
  9. I did have a breast lift, 15 years ago, 5 years after my RNY. 2nd best thing I did after the Bariatric surgery. Girls still look good. Torrid have wonderful stretchy lace bralettes that are not tight but work for providing a little support and they can help you look pretty. They have size 14. I am sure that they have them elsewhere. @Missouri-Lee's Summit It has been 20 years since my RNY. I was working and traveling for work. I, too, had problems with diarrhea. I fasted for 24 hours before a flight because I did not want to have to get up to on the plane, only to be told to sit down. I had a friend lose it and she said it was the worst thing that ever happened to her. Then, I would just worry myself sick over where the bathrooms were where ever I visited. So, I spent a lot of time researching and testing foods. I can not eat any fatty things. Nothing. No ice cream, no soft cheeses, nothing deep fried, no buttery baking. I have to avoid any fatty meat, meat in general. Low fat dairy does not trigger a problem. Trust me, if I know I am going to be home all day, I may have a scoop of ice cream. But I have learned its just not worth it. The other thing I did was pelvic floor exercises. Well, my trainer at the time (a mom of 6), said to do thirty pelvic floor lifts three times a day. Do them while you do the dishes for example. She said, just squeeze your butt muscles like you are trying to stop a fart. "keegles " can also help. (spelling?) I always have Imodium in my purse. I am scheduled for a modification/revision of my pouch and RNY on the 31st of this month. Post surgery, when I can have blended foods, I will add oatmeal(tablespoon uncooked) and brown rice (tablespoon cooked) to my meals as that slows things down. Maybe that will help? My Mom and several relatives had IBS, and they have not had bariatric surgery. I think I am just an IBS person with bariatric surgery, so I need to be extra careful. Good luck....

    Puréed stage need ideas!

Hi, A wonderful woman on this site gave me GREAT advice. I will look for the post, and ask permission to repost. Meanwhile, just some friendly tips: 1) Embrace your new life! This is going to create health, and long term happiness. 2) Go the Bariatric Pal store, buy any of the powdered soups. Ask your Doctor what they prefer. 3) Switch it up. Scrambled eggs, pudding, protein shake, tuna, salmon, cottage cheese, soups, protein water. NON spicy chili. 4) Look up this stage on You Tube, Pinterest and you will get TONS of ideas. 5) What motivates you? Listen to music, podcasts, watch some favorite movies. Keep moving every 20 minutes. I hope this helps.
  11. https://www.cardiovascularbusiness.com/topics/lipids-metabolic/new-criteria-extend-eligibility-bariatric-surgery "The American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery’s latest publish as a step in the right direction for patients who are obese but might not meet current criteria for bariatric surgery. Right now those criteria, which are three decades old, are “arbitrarily” based on a patient’s body mass index and don’t account for other confounding factors. “Too many see obesity as a problem of willpower, and it’s simply not,” Brethauer, a co-author of the new guidelines, said in a statement. “Patients must participate in their care by making healthy lifestyle changes, but the most effective treatment is often surgery, and that should be an option for patients who would benefit.”

    Soft food diet ideas?

Moist cooking methods work best for soft foods and although chicken thighs are easier for a lot of people, still many experience issues with chicken. So think instapot and crockpot cooking and things made in a dutch oven like potroasts, slow cooked ground meat chilis, stewed chicken, smothered chicken (made bariatric style). I did a ton of foil and parchment fish (white fish and salmon and also shrimp, and crab can also work), soft scrambled eggs, soft boiled eggs, soft meats with "meat lube" = premade low cal, low sugar, low carb gravies to put over them. One of my favorites was doing Thanksgiving green bean casserole made bariatric style with canned chicken in it. So good. Also made a lot of tuna salad with hb mashed egg and low fat cottage cheese to replace the mayo. I'd add some dijon mustard and pickle juice or dill relish. This recipe works great for salmon and chicken salad versions too. I just kept it very simple, and ate the same things daily/repetitively so that I could just focus on keeping cals low and protein to meet my macro goal. And time passed quickly. Canned green beans, frozen broccoli, frozen cauliflower were my friends in the veg department. Also no sugar added Granny Smith applesauce.

  16. And last Friday (July 19th) Valerie the head Nurse- Practioner from my Bariatric Clinic at OSU returned my Early in the Week Call. Six months post-op+ : The Sophomores Thread

I just noticed that you and had have almost identical starting stats and I will meet the 150 weight at probably the exact timeframe that you met 150. *bariatric twilight zone*
  19. I chose to have my surgery done at a bariatric clinic (Pompeii Surgical), not in a hospital, for exactly this reason - hospitals are for sick people, lots of germs and viruses and no doubt MRSA. There was also not even a whisper of the super bug about any of the surgeons that work there. I believe Dr Almanza performs his procedures at Grand View Hospital. Some of these surgeons do too many procedures in a day, and cleaning the OR between patients is rushed to the point where this sort of thing happens. So awful

Any August 2019 people out there?

Keep being his Rockstar! What is so great about this forum is that you can really share and get support. You do not have to tell everyone in your work and family life. Honestly, if this forum had been available for me 20 years ago, I would have had avoided a lot of pitfalls. Social media has really provided a way for us all to be inspired and this forum allows you to ask any question and get answers from people who know. Bariatric surgery is still the best thing I ever did for myself, and I kept most of the weight off for many, many years. With the help here, all the great nutritional products, and the fact that protein shakes are mainstream.... You will have so much support without having to get it from friends and family. Sounds like your Dr. is awesome as well! Good luck!!!!!
  21. I had my surgery performed in 2015. The surgeons of Advent Health were superb. The surgery was performed with precision and speed. I was up walking after my leak test and home the very next day. I was given medications to endure my stomach muscles did not try to work while they were healing (no squeezing and pushing food along). The staff sent me home with packets of information on what to eat for each stage of recovery as well as recipes and portion guidelines. I was also given a journal/calendar to track food/exercise and appointments along my new lifestyle/ weight loss journey. I felt like I had this huge support team in my corner the whole time. All I had to do was pick up the phone and there they were. Additionally, the weekly support group meetings were so helpful. I was able to give and get support all along my journey. Advent Health Ocala really goes out of their way to.care for their patients! May that is why the were given the title of Bariatric Center of Excellence!
  22. If this concerns you, I would highly suggest seeking therapy with a bariatric counselor. ((hugs)) What you are describing is quite common. I was pretty much shut in and chair bound when I started this journey this last time at 287lbs. My all time high was 325lbs. And I was totally shut in. I work from home, so it is easy to go days/weeks without people. Now that I'm down to 133lbs, I hate staying home! I want to be active out and doing things and being with people. My personality has totally changes (again--they say we all change about every 7 years). But it really depends on you. Are you introverted or extrovert. Introverts need the quiet alone/down time in order to refuel themselves. Extroverts are fueled externally and need group interaction to refuel. So one person's normal could be highly stressful for you and it may be that little changes about your preferences after weight loss. Impossible for us to predict. Keep following your path to surgery and your new life! But get your support network up and running now, pre-surgery!!! Get and keep your RD on board and your therapist also a rl support group and continue to come here and interact!
  23. according to the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgeons (attached), most gastric bypass patients should get 3000 IU's of vitamin D a day (obviously, if your bloodwork is showing deficiencies, you should be taking more than that, though). If the daily total of D3 in your calcium citrate supplements equal at least 3000 IUs, then you may be OK - but I've always taken a separate D3 supplement. here are the supplement recommendations - you have to scroll down a bit to find how much of each you need: https://asmbs.org/app/uploads/2008/09/ASMBS-Nutritional-Guidelines-2016-Update.pdf

    The Maintenance Thread

I appears that my body has found the weight it is happy at. I have been maintaining within 4 lbs for 4 months now (13.5 months post op). Recently my weight range has been even narrower, within 2 lbs. I wish I could say that this was all purposeful, but it just kinda happened, once I stopped "bariatric eating"
