Hi! I just finished day 2 of my 14 day liquid diet before my VSG on Aug 11. I've never had any issues with heartburn or acid reflux, until I started on all liquids. I'm drinking premier protein Shakes, Greek yogurt, Tom soup, broth... I'm worried it will get worse after surgery. Has anyone else experience this? Any advice??

1week post op and hungry
GotProlactinoma replied to Jennifer143's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Mine was on the 19th so I probaly counted days wrong. I had an IV today to help against dehydration. I also tried a tiny bit of the Greek yogurt. Need to make more chicken bone broth but no energy. -
RNY Bypass was 2 weeks ago today. Can't believe how far I've come in just two weeks! My surgeon has food "phases" each lasting two weeks. Phase 1 postop is liquid only (No liquids on day of surgery, water on 2nd day after upper GI confirming no leaks, & then ease into protein when possible. Jello, yogurt, and Pudding are okay in this phase. Phase 2 is "Very Soft Foods" & that starts today! My first meal is 1/4 of Egg Beaters. Fingers crossed!

I'm on the two shakes a day, plus I do have chicken breast. I try to eat an egg every once in a while, and Greek yogurt gives me 11g of protein too. I think I'm finally hitting the 60-80g of protein daily, now that I can stomach the shakes again, and the Premier Protein shakes have 30g each, I may even top the protein requirements if I have yogurt and chicken in one day. I think the calories are my biggest issue. The two shakes, the chicken, the yogurt, that's only about 614 calories. My doctor wants me to stay in the 600-800 calorie limit, but even if he didn't, I'm not sure I could top it. The only way would be to go back to my regular coffee intake, which is a latte with whole milk and caramel, but those are empty calories and I hate to do that. I will think of something. I have a tuna fish and whole wheat cracker fetish, maybe I can try 1-2 whole wheat crackers or something that will boost my calorie intake. This is so funny, me on the other end of this conundrum, trying to UP my calorie intake. How ironic is that? Again, thanks for all your help!! -
I know that we are suppose to eat plain yogurt. How do you eat it? It's gross by itself. How do you make it more palatable?
-
I've added stuff such as PB2 peanut butter powder, strawberries, blueberries, Torani sugar-free syrups, Equal packets, and so forth. Use your imagination and preferences to conjure up a compromise to make the yogurt more palatable.

That's some great advice, thank you! I know that your body is going through a starvation mode and hanging on to every pound...I hear that from my trainer and nutritionist. I'm going to stop weighing myself daily, I was only doing it for a chart for my nutritionist and she let me off the hook. I'm continuing to work on my protein intake and definitely trying to hit 60 every day! Question for you: Do you drink your protein mostly or eat it? Without a shake, there's no way I can hit 60. My Premier Protein shakes have 30g each and that's the only way I will be able to do it, although I try to have yogurt and chicken breast (rotisserie from Whole Foods) every day so I won't be pure liquid every day. I have heard that there is a difference between drinking it and eating it. Can you share your experience? Thank you for your words of encouragement. It is depressing, but I have to focus on what I am doing and stop lamenting on what I don't have. It's a struggle, but I'm getting past it. -
Having trouble getting my daily protein
hmills653 replied to sylvia2017's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
This is similar to the sample menu I was given. I understand it's a good concept but I know my dietician wanted to to start eating that way at 3 weeks. I am 8 weeks out and I have to wait at least any hour after I eat to be able to drink or I can feel it. Then I am finally able to drink about 6 oz at a time, but then I have to wait at least a half hr before I can drink more. On the days I work its hard sometimes to even get a lunch break sometimes. I do 12 hr shifts, unfortunately we've been understaffed for over a year now making it worse. But I do have to eat multiple times a day to get enough protein. Yesterday I had 2 eggs before I left for work at 6 am. While at work anytime I went to the back to grab something for a patient I passed the break room, so I stop and drink some water. Around 10 am I ate a string cheese. At 1 pm I ate a 20 gm protein bar for lunch. At 5:30 I had a Greek yogurt. When I got home at 8:30 I had 2 oz of chicken for dinner. During the day I was able to get in about 36 oz of fluid and 77 gm of protein. Ideally I shouldn't be eating dinner that late, and yes I should get more fluid in. But I feel for working on a busy floor at the hospital I did pretty good and there's no way I could've done it without snacks in between meals. I haven't gotten to the point where I'm able to add in vegetables yet though bc I get full off the protein but I know it will come in time. At home I can do a little better without the time constraints of work. -
Having trouble getting my daily protein

This is not true. Many people after surgery, whether it's fresh out or years down the line, can't get all their protein and calorie goals in just 3 meals. My 6 times a day usually consist of: 1. A Greek yogurt. 2. A hard boiled egg and some cheese. 3. 3 oz lean protein and some veggies (maybe a small salad or steamed veggies). 4. A cottage cheese. 5. 3 oz protein with veggies again. 6. Protein shake or piece of fruit. I am over a year out and can not eat only 3 meals because it hurts if I try. Also I find this helps curb hunger because as your stomach heals your hunger will come back. -
Just been Sleeved

Still very painful. I'm day 2 post op. Got home yesterday. Can hardly drink only 15 MLS at a time. Full liquids start today, so I'll see how the yogurt and protein shake go. I feel like puking. -
Ended up staying a bit longer at the hospital because of pain but I'm home now. Having a rough time getting in and out of bed or getting comfortable. Gas has been kind of a pain but all manageable. I'm really surprised at how normal I mostly feel. Other than the gas pain and incision pain I feel like myself. Was able to get down part of a protein shake and a light and fit yogurt smoothie as well as most of my water. Just got to remember to take small sips lol otherwise it doesn't feel great. I like cottage cheese, but Triple Zero Oikos yogurt is so good and I think more protein than cottage cheese. It is not tart like a lot of Greek yogurt.

Hey Coyote< How are you feeling TODAY? this is how im getting my 60 grams of protein in a day now that we can have yogurt. I take my premiere clear protein liquid (put it in the freezer i make it really cold before its frozen) pour it into my poland spring sports bottle with the pop up cap to sip throughout the day) Then, throughout the day i sip/eat these three items 1. Premiere protein liquid in my poland spring bottle = 20 g protein 2. Oikis tripple 0 greek yogurt = 15 g protein 3. Premier protein shake (i prefer banana) = 20 g protein. If im craving something to crunch i suck on a sugar free ice pop and im doing fine! I do have apple sauce in the morning with my crushed meds and if im craving something else i usually go to my V8. Today is a milestone for me! under 200's i n almost a year ..given Ive only lost 4 lbs since surgery but i Lost 10 before surgery so im a happy camper! going to keep going with the protein :-D

We must of had our surgery on the same day - July 18th? I too have had troubles getting the water in or enough liquids for that matter. I tried Greek yogurt but I think it's too heavy cause it caused diarrhea. Been really weak and tired, but tomorrow is another day and will try to get all the liquid in. Keep up the fight. -
Sleeved Yesterday 7/19 - having trouble!!
SharonKaye replied to Kyle Lukas's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm on day 7 and our stories and experiences sound similar. I too had hot sweats and very uncomfortable feeling. When I ate yogurt it seemed too heavy for my pouch and caused diarrhea. I have to stick to broth and warm tea. I even made pudding but I didn't react well to the milk. Some days I'm so tired, but I'm hoping tomorrow is better and want to get out of the house. Keep being positive. We can do this. -
Anyone have any recommendations for unflavored protein powders for post-op? I plan on mixing it with the Crystal Light, pudding, yogurt, applesauce etc after surgery to supplement the shakes if I'm not getting enough in. I understand it should not be the primary source of protein but I'm looking for something in between shakes.

Yeah I tried one. Don't like the protein flavor. I eat a yogurt everyday that has 15 grams and I drink a protein milk sometimes that has 30 grams. I think I'm just brunt out on the same old stuff. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N900A using BariatricPal mobile app -
Foods you no longer enjoy
hmills653 replied to MerryMarie's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
So far I'm able to eat anything but finds that sweets aren't as satisfying anymore, not that I'm jumping on that bandwagon this soon but like my husband wanted ice cream did I got one scoop of frozen yogurt and it was like ehhh. Wasn't worth my calorie intake. I used to be a carb and sweets gal. My new thing now is, when you get to the cheese center of your danish I'll take a little bite. Once again not planning on making this a habit but sometimes it's hard to sit and watch everyone else eat it but I know that I didn't have this surgery to eat desserts all day lol. -
Is it okay to eat cottage cheese or yogurt a week and 1 day post op

Food -
I was having issues with that for a bit after surgery. I just didn't want to eat and even thinking about taking my pills in the morning made my stomach queasy. I just stick with food that had little taste such as vanilla yogurt, took my zofran and changed my multi vitamin bc that made me nauseated. Eventually I felt better. Now I haven't had any nausea but can't wait to be able to stop the omeprazole. He said 3 mos on it. I ate bc I knew I had to. I hope it goes away soon for you, but I would take the nausea med and eat something mild, I figure there was a reason they gave me like 6 bottles of liquid zofran in my prescription before surgery.

Having trouble getting my daily protein

You're in the "3 week stall", just a smidge late No worries, it will break in a week or two. Get out of the habit of only eating when you're hungry. That could be until Christmas. Try to get on a schedule of 5-6 small meals a day. You need to keep your blood sugar levels (I.E. Strength) up. Liquid protein sources are the easiest this early out. Protein shakes, milk, yogurt, kefir, cottage cheese, eggs, refried beans... -
Sure did. I took lots of yogurt and probiotics, and it cleared up on its own by 6 or 8 weeks postop.

Here I Go (My Journey Thus Far)
Litecaramel replied to Litecaramel's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hmm so maybe I didn't read the weight on the scale right when they sent me in for surgery. I thought it said 220. When I went today to the dr. a week and a half later my weight is 215.5 and the nutritionist said I lost 20lbs. So dunno but in any event I've lost weight so yay! Unfortunately I'm on liquids for another week soooo protein shakes & water it remains, week 3 is when I get to move to soft foods. I can have yogurt and cottage cheese and oatmeal though so maybe I'll try those even though I don't like cottage cheese. I asked about exercising and was told anything that uses my core is out for another 3 weeks but I can do bicycling and other non-core activities. Think I'll stick to walking (outside and on treadmill for now). All in all everything looked good, I'm healing nicely.
