  1. Anyone else? Pre-op diet starts this Thursday! I am so nervous and excited! I have three boys (7,5, 10 months) and I'm most scared of a surgical complication. I am looking to lose around 150 pounds. I'm 6'0 tall and have always carried a lot of hidden weight. In 2009-2010 I lost over 100 pounds on my own, but I have gained a little more than half back. So ready to get it off and keep it off!
  2. I know what you mean I have 5 more days of fasting until my surgery and I am trying to keep busy getting my house clean and ready so that when I come home there will be nothing to do... also I am going shopping to make sure I have everything in the house I need when I come home... ugh! Just keep busy.. may God Bless your surgery and I pray that you have a spectacular weight loss journey
  3. Your "sweet spot" is where you have enough restriction to eat a lilttle but not so tight that it won't go through -- AND you're losing weight. Ta -- you were still technically in the healing stages. ANY weightloss during the first month or so is a bonus since the focus is not on losing weight but on the band healing properly. Hope that helps you fret less.
  4. Yes, but you made it through most of bandster hell AND lost weight....not everybody (ME!!!) loses weight, so you have done well. Keep doing what you are doing and the pounds will come off. Slowly is healthy!!!
  5. Thank you for all the posts. I have been doing more research on both types of surgeries pretty much all day today. I'm still completely torn and still don't know which surgery I will get. All along I have wanted the RNY because I thought it was a better choice for me personally (I think I might need the dumping syndrome to keep me in line), but what if I fall into the group of folks that the weight loss does not help the pain and/or swelling in joints and lower back? What if I suffer some other injury that causes me pain and Tylenol doesn't work? I will be talking with the doctor as soon as I can for some medical advice, but I wanted to say thanks to you for answering my post!

    31-5-06 Weigh in Day

Weight: 107.2 (-.8grams)(-1.8lbs) Food: Ice tea (29 kcal, 7.3g carbs, 30mg vit C) 125ml 1% milk 3 Maria crackers (ok these I'm debating the nutritionalist told me to eat them but the surgeon said not to. hummmmmm) 60gm (1oz) lean pork girlled 1 tablespoon white rice 100gm (3oz) salad 200gm (6oz) turkey with mushrooms 100gm (3oz) rice with beans 1,5 liter of water Exercise: Daily routine
  7. Wow.. I saw your weight loss ticker. HOLY COW! My goodness. You've lost half of you basically! Great work! Amazing!!!!!!!! You look awesome.
  8. Your stomach takes awhile to heal. I suspect that at 12 days post-op, protein bars are way too soon. It wasn't until the 3rd or 4th month that my nutritionist recommended them. I recommend you discuss this with your surgeons office or nutritionist. When you reach that stage, I would recommend Quest protein bars. These bars were good in that they had high protein, minimal sugar and also contained fiber. They also came in a lot of different flavors. The fiber is important because it helps with constipation that can become a problem towards the end of your weight loss phase.

    Losing My Way...

It IS kinda like torture sometimes but I try looking at the big picture...I can't eat what I want to eat because I chose to have this surgery and change my old eating habits so I would lose weight. I still want the things that my husband eats and every time I'm tempted I remind myself that I didn't go through this surgery just to go back to the way I was. (sometimes that helps!) As for the "I'd rather not eat blues", If I don't get enough calories I don't lose any weight so I try to choose healthy foods (most of the time) with good calorie & Protein counts in them. Hope this helps!
  10. I took a notebook with a list of questions I already had so that I wouldn't forget any. And that way I could write down the answers and any other notes. They'll ask you to describe your previous attempts at weight loss so you may want to jot a few notes down on that before hand - when, what did you try, how much did you lose, how long before you started to regain etc. They'll go through all the surgery options and discuss with you your specific conditions etc and help decide what will be the best option for your particular case. So it does take a while but it is not overwhelming. In my case, while I do see my primary doc regularly (2x a year to monitor my high blood pressure) he is only in the background for this process. I'm using the surgeon and his nutritionist for my insurance-required 6 month medically supervised pre-op period. I am having my primary copied on all tests etc and his office is part of the same larger medical group that the surgeon is in so he has total access to the records at my surgeon's office. But the point is, you probably won't HAVE to use your primary doc for this process other than to get the letter of recommendation.
  11. I generally sleep like crap, waking up and rolling over MANY times during the night... I know I snore but don't wake myself snoring in bed (like I do if I fall asleep in a chair or flat on my back), so I don't think it's an apnea issue waking me. I think it's a combination of eating too much before bed and either being uncomfortable from that OR from heartburn/reflux, or just being generally uncomfortable in one position for too long because of my weight. Acid issues aside, do you find that you sleep better now after surgery?
  12. I definitely sleep more peacefully after the weight loss. I hardly ever wake up in a different position than how I fell asleep. I'm a side sleeper always have been, but it's been cool because I can now sleep on my back comfortably.
  13. I ask because I am afraid I am going to stop having those weight loss days.
  14. I am 5 days post operation and I am wondering when and how much or how long I should start exercising - like walking outside or on a treadmill? I am dropping weight (8 pounds so far) but want to keep the momentum going and maybe start toning. Any guidance would be much appreciated.

    Getting Exercise after lapband

It's best to ask your Dr when and how much on exercise, though walking you could start anytime. My Dr released me back to the gym a week after surgery, but I had to avoid ab exercises until 6 weeks post-op. Great job on your weight loss, but remember, this time is for healing....don't let the scale rule you. I got 'stuck' for over a week at the same weight, but my body was changing during this time. Relax, take a deep breath, and follow your Dr's directions .
  16. Really truly not much!!! My own pillow (heaven at the hospital and nice to hug on the drive home), Chapstick (woulda died without it!!!) phone and charger (I also I took my iPad), clean panties, tooth brush/paste, hair brush/clip/band. I worse sweat pants and a baggy thirst to the hospital and wore the same thing home. Until all the tubes and IV were gone I wore a hospital gown, when I got up and out i put another gown on over it to cover my posterior. Didn't want blood or stuff on my night gowns! I did have 1 pair of soft Jammie's I bummed around in the last night once all my extra parts were disconnected, would been fine without em! I don't like slippers so I wore the socks with grippers on the bottom (brought a pair but had to stay longer than elected so used the hospitals) took a book, never opened it. HW 312, pre-op (RNY) 255, current weight 207.4
  17. Sorry , it is hard to describe. I feel like I lose from my top roll and my top roll seems to be flatter (the waist on my pants seems to be looser). Then the next day the top roll seems to get bigger again and I feel like I have gained, but I have not gained weight on the scale. The waistband seems to be tighter, but no gain on the scale. Then the next day I will feel like the top roll gets littler, flatter again and my waistband is looser. Maybe it is just bloating. It just seems like a pattern to me. I just wondered if you actually lose from just one spot and then your body redistributes your fat before you lose more, again, from the same spot.
  18. I find this very interesting. I've been told that exercise is absolutely ESSENTIAL for weight loss and I've been told that exercise will not affect weight loss at all - that it only matters "what you put into your mouth". I was told each of these items above by medical doctors. Now, I'm not afraid of hard work (hard exercise) but I don't really enjoy it. And because the weight loss specialist MD told me about exercise not affecting weight loss, I tend to put more faith in his opinion. (The other MD was an immunologist) BUT, I've also seen this first-hand in my own experience. My bottom line is this: I don't really enjoy exercise, but it does make me feel better, physically and emotionally - so I do it. It also increases my lung capacity (I have had asthma for 30 years). I watch "what I put in my mouth" to help with weight loss, and I had the LapBand placed to help me to put less in my mouth. I still have to make good food choices - and for me that has to be low-carb to lose weight.

    Pre-op weight loss

Because of my pre-op BMI (38) I was not required to lose any weight before surgery. But if I had gained, I would have been canceled until I lost it. My surgeon does require some to lose weight, but it is patient specific, not a flat 5% for everyone. I did have to do a 2-week pre-op fasting program, I did Medifast. I lost 8 pounds during this 2-week phase. Denise

    Atkins for banders

I went into ketosis after being banded..... not on Atkins. Sometimes it happens...and many doctors agree that it will not do any harm UNLESS there are underlying conditions w/ the kidney or whatever. I was on Atkins years ago and got down to 136. I'm considering Atkins next month after I reach my goal weight... I'm getting a slight unfill to lose all this restriction and I just don't want to start gaining it back.

    Atkins for banders

I find the SouthBeach diet the solution for weight loss. The Southbeach begins like the Atkins. This is to break the carbo addiction. Unlike the Atkins, it cuts back on the saturated fat and replaces it with good fats (olive oil, canola oil)... After two weeks you begin to add fruit, vegetables and whole grain products back into diet. White carbos and bad fats are eliminated for good. I use a lot of ground beef in my meals. So I bought me a meat grinder and pick up less fatty beef roasts, cut the fat off or out and gind it. I end up with some of the nicest ground beef I've ever seen. When I go to cook it I add back fat with olive oil. The other day I found chuck arm roasts for $1.79 a #, bought 6 of them. I ended up with 98% fat free $3.00+ a # ground beef.

    Two week stall?

Here is a good article about why stalls happen: http://www.dsfacts.com/weight-loss-stall-or-plateau.php

    Newbee :)

I haven't had the sleeve yet. But, I have a very plentiful supply of friends and co-workers who have had it done. All have had varying amounts of success. It really depends on "getting your head right" and once you get to that 50-60% mark realizing you may have to count calories or do a more traditional weight loss plan. The sleeve is one tool. It is not the end all, be all for many people. This is coming from my observations and what has been relayed to me by the people in my life who are a very valued support system with many different views. This seems to be the general consensus. The ones who are really getting to their goal are working hard. But they report feeling really good and having more energy to put towards working for it. Also, the emotional aspect helps as they are not so demoralized and ashamed to go to a gym. And more than one of these people were in excess of 400 pounds. It's very achievable, but may take hard work.

Carb Or Low Carb...that Is The Question?

There are different forms of carbs. Mr. Worm has a point but there are plenty of ways to get good carbs: fruits, veggies, multigrain breads, etc. I think it all depends on what your NUT tells you. Mine doesn't push the low carb diet and instead wants me to eat a balanced one with the above foods in it. For the first month post-op I was miserable because I had no energy. Let's just say that ketosis was not nice to me. My NUT said that I was too focused on protein and that each meal should be a balance of 2:1 ratio of protein to carbs. I switched it up and I'm feeling so much better. Mind you, I'm probably losing weight at a much slower pace than others but I'm no longer dragging along, feeling like poop. I'll take the former over the latter any day.
