  1. I'm starting to get really frustrated about this surgery. During the pre-op phase, I lost 23 pounds, and the first three days after surgery, I dropped another 10. Since that point, I have either stayed the same or gained weight every single day. My fiance had the same surgery a week prior to me, and she is dealing with the same thing. I just don't get it. In diets of the past, if I had eaten this amount of food, I would have been dropping 5-10 pounds a week...but after the band, it's nothing. I was expecting rapid weight loss (and was pretty much guaranteed this by my Doctor, as long as I followed the guidelines, which I have), but at this point, I'm starving myself and eating foods that disgust me (protein shakes) for nothing. Has anyone else had these problems after the surgery? I understand the argument about swelling, but if that was the case, I would have gained in the days following surgery. I also understand plateau's, but this has been going on for 12 days now. I weigh almost 400 pounds and am surviving on less than 1000 calories a day...it's ridiculous.

    Buh Bye....

I have totally given up Diet Coke. For those that know me...know that I ALWAYS have a diet coke sitting next to me and that I am ashamed to to say that I can go an entire year without drinking a bottled Water but drink 10-12 diet sodas a day. This is what I did to quit 3 weeks ago. I stopped Diet Coke completely because of the carbonation. I thought that I would ween myself by drinking coffee. I was mean on day one...I even cussed someone out by phone (bill collector) and this not my way of doing things. Day 2 - I was still a little irritable had maybe 2 cups of coffee...but I stopped drinking coffee to. I had a slight headache for a day or two...not a major one. I have been drinking bottled waters...but I doctor it up with crystal light or Hawaiian punch flavors. No sugar or calories. I now drink 6-8 bottled waters a day. I have my surgery on April 3rd. I was told absolutely no carbonation and that is what kick started me.
  3. Hi all. I have not been on here for some months. Personal issues that I will not go into here, but I had my sleeve on 11/29/10. So far I am very happy with the way I feel. I was taking Lasix to get rid of excess fluid pre-surgery, but my dr. did not want me to continue it post surgery. I was alarmed at first, because, of course I started retaining fluid and actually put on 5 lbs, from surgery day through 5 days post op. He was right in his decision, because I would have been dehydrated had I taken it. With that said, after I lost that 5 lbs of fluid plus an additonal 10 lbs during week 2, there has been no further change in weight. On monday I will be 3 weeks post op. I have been getting in 64+ ounces of fluids, getting in all my required 60 grams of protein, walking 1+mile on the treadmill for a week now with no further change. Am I doing something wrong, or is this normal?

What to expect postop day 6

I too was sleeved on 10/1 so I'm 1 week out..I haven't experienced the painful gas everyone was talking about...but the only thing I'm experiencing is the acid reflux in the middle of the night. I haven't taken any meds for it yet but I will definitely be getting some today. My pain has been minimum, on day 3 I was released from the hospital I really didn't need anything but chap stick a hair brush and a change of clothes to go home in the hospital supplied everything else. On day 3-5 I had mad restriction my main focus was fluids fluids fluids I was and still afraid of getting dehydrated..now that I'm able to to get in a little more in I'm starting on my protein on day 6-7 that's my input so far one week post op I've lost a total of 11pounds, it's kinda like omg I'm disappearing lol its definitely something to get use to

    Approved ---I think

I was told I was approved by UHC on 10-19-07 I had my surgery on 11-12-07 This morning I get a letter telling me it is not covered, go figure that one out, so I have been on phone all morning trying to get this figured out, I wouldn't have had the surgery if my insurance couldn't help me pay for it. Frustrated to say the least.:cry
  6. Rev Me Up!

    Am I on track?

As you will hear, this is a highly individual process. 12 pounds sounds great!! Now, be sure to prepare yourself because you are on the cusp of your first stall. The 3-5 week stall makes a lot of people crazy. Your body drops this initial weight and then stops to take a breath :-) I lost around 10 punds in the first week and then a couple of pounds for the next 3 weeks. Now I average 2 pounds a week. I am slow, but I also started at a lower BMI because I had a lap band before. Hang in there and focus on your food-- Lara
  7. wow. I'm so sorry to hear of the endless waiting on your end. I had a similar experience - and I found that when I kept calling my stuff finally got done and faxed. ugh! frustrating isn't it? however, once I got my approval -- I too called my insurance and the date they sent me a letter. It took 10 days to actually receive the letter though! - anyway, when I called the surgeon's office with an approval, I was called back immediately. I had rarely been called back, let alone that fast. Had my surgery last Monday and when I called for my first post-op appt she got to me right away when she got in. so ----- maybe they have so many of us wanting to go thru the hoops and they can't handle it all? maybe those of us approved already are priority? not sure. Is your surgeon very experienced with lap band? I know you wrote that he did your gall bladder and is pioneer in laparoscopic surgeries and all, but how much with lap band? This is completely different in the after care aspect of the surgery ---- it isn't just surgery and done like most surgeries are. I'd want to know how many he has done before I trusted him with it. just some thoughts
  8. I have started working out on my Elliptical. We are supposed to be getting 30 minutes of exercise daily (I have been walking). However with the elliptical, well it's pretty obvious in less than 30 seconds that it has been 20+ years since I have actually "worked out". LOL. I was following the training settings on mine and their recommendation is to start with 20 minutes the first time, and do that for 5 days and then the following week go for 25 minutes.. and keep increasing over the weeks until you reach 40 minutes. Well I have everything I can do to even get through 1 song on my playlist. LOL I'm assuming I should just start there and go? 5 minutes this week and try for 7 or 10 minutes per time the following week? So there is my confession and someday my inspiring starting point: "The first time I got on my elliptical, I couldn't even finish the first song on my playlist".
  9. I have no fill in my band and have lost 115lbs total; have 5lbs+ to go. I do have restriction (I feel full with a cup or a little more of food) but I can eat pretty much anything. Sometimes bread gives me a hard time if I don't chew well, otherwise I have restriction, but not nearly as much as most people here do. I think it's possible and a good idea, IMO. Some will probably disagree but for me my journey has been 90% me, 10% the band. Yes it keeps me full but I chose to workout for an hour each day and I chose to continue to count my calories, weigh all of my food, etc. Hope that helps and good luck!

    Depo-Provera

So everyone's body is different which means it's going to process it differently. Some ppl take forever to get pregnant(years) or it can be the next month. As for me I was on it for 8 yrs and gained 10-15 lbs for every yr I was on it. It is also one of the reasons I have hell losing weight. I've been off the shot for 2 yrs now and still not pregnant. Although we decided to stop trying in jan when I started this journey. The only up side to the depo was no period Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G870A using the BariatricPal App

    Thin crust pizza

I use a low carb tortilla and make bar pizza in a cast Iron skillet. LOVE this recipe (below) and once you get the technique down, it tastes like a lovely crisp thin crust pizza and I can usually eat two pieces, so I get two meals out of it - which is super as I loved cold leftover pizza just as much as fresh! I use a low carb spaghetti sauce, but only about one tablespoon because I don't like lots of sauce anyway and they tend to have lots of hidden sugar in them. I tend to either make my own, or get something like Aldi's organic line marinara as it is much lower carb than most. We top them with things like roasted red peppers, caramelized onions, turkey pepperoni, black olives, fresh basil and spinach and lots of mozzarella. http://www.seriouseats.com/2014/10/cast-iron-skillet-tortilla-pizza-bar-pie-food-lab.html

    Feelings of should I?

I think every single person has these feelings before surgery - totally normal!!!! I am doing the sleeve after having had a lapband 10 years ago and even I am scared!! It's just our emotions and nerves. Good luck, you will be great!!!!
  15. Hi my name is Shell and I was banded on 02/19/09. My story is similar to yours I've tried everything in the world to lose weight and nothing worked. I'm hoping this will be my year to finally lose the weight. I wish you all the luck in the world!!!
  16. I was banned on 10/23/09 and have lost 25 lbs since surgery. I don't get my first fill until 12/3/09.

I hate exercising .....take a look at this

I like Dr. Phil's idea about making yourself accountable. You have to pick out something you like to do , for me it is watching nighttime TV. no daily exercise = no TV until. The thought frightens me even now. Maybe for others reading or xbox ? Exercise for myself was just 20 minutes to start. 10 minutes down the road and 10 minutes back. Build up slowly . A little more each week. edie

  19. Hi all, my name is Brian and I guess I am going to be a smashing pumpkin, maybe even the first one, I get banded on the 2nd and NWWLS in Everett by Dr. Montgomery. Never really though much about getting it done until july of this year when, well, not to be gross, but a certain part of my male anatomy swelled up to the size of large, large grapefruit, no exageration. Just in case this wasn't clear enough, one part I would have been thrilled to get that big, this wasn't that part, enough said. I went to the doctor and he showed me that part, and some other hard Patches of skin on my legs etc. and told me that I was filling up with Water, I had put on so much weight my body could not handel it anymore. He bluntly told me, "you will continue to fill up until it reaches your lungs, and then you will drown in your own Fluid." So I had to pick my long time mistress food or life, it was actually a tough decision, but my 4 year old son tipped the scales in favor of life. My wife has a rather large mouth, and told my parents what was going on. This initiated a conversation with my mother the next night about the doctor, and losing weight etc. She said, you know, there are surgeries to help, and I said, yeah, but theyre like 20 grand, I don't have that kind of money, she said do it and don't worry about it. So I went to my information session in Walla Walla in late july, set up my consultation on 8/8/2008, and set surgery for 10/2/2008. My good friend and his wife also got on board when I started talking about getting it done, we all had our consultations the same day. My friend Brian was banded on Sept 11, his wife is getting banded Sept 25, and I am a week later on the second. I have a substantial ammount of weight to lose, probably close to 300 pounds, so I be around here for a while. I figure when I reach my goal I will look like a bloodhound, but I'm ok with that. Nice to meet everbody, and good luck to all. have a great day brian
  20. 10 days to go until the dreaded 23 hour trip to San Diego (and on to Mexicali). Today I started thinking about some of the things I'm really looking forward to after surgery: - Smaller boobies! I've been packing double Gs around for far too long. There is nothing cute or sexy about these big mamas or the ugly bras that cover them. There are 2 styles of bras at Nordstrom that can handle the job and neither of them are cute. Can't wait to burn them! - Seeing results of my workouts at the gym. I'm strong, freakishly strong, and love lifting weights and doing crossfit. I know I have some hardcore muscles underneath the layers of fat and I can't wait to be able to see them! Plus now I feel like a fraud because I work out but don't get any smaller... - Being able to feel comfortable in short sleeves or (gasp!) tank tops. I live on a tropical island and wear long sleeves every day. It sucks. - Wearing a dress and feeling girly. Haven't worn a dress/skirt since about 2004, the last time I was fit and healthy. Can't remember what it's like to feel feminine. - Scuba diving and paddle boarding at a normal weight. It's gonna feel great! It's gonna be so much easier! Two hobbies that I love haven't been much fun lately. I can't wait til it's fun again! - Being more comfortable at the beach. Let's face it: there's nothing relaxing about walking around at the beach at my weight. The only thing that saves me is that the majority of the local population is very overweight as well so I blend in. But still. -Enjoying physical activity again. Bye bye sore feet and back! Hello, long lost hobbies! - Dating. It's been a long, long, long time. I've never been comfortable in my skin since gaining weight and I've become a hermit. I miss men! How about you? What are you looking forward to after surgery?

    Pain on my left side

I had some pain a couple months ago on my left side. Very sharp pains in the middle of the night , could not lay on my left side for about 3 weeks. They did ultrasound as well, could not find anything. But, at the same time I was struggling with a slight overfill, I had gotten a fill which brought me to 9.0 cc in a 10 cc band. I was sliming about everyday, no vomiting, at this point. It was not improving. I looked at my food diary and made a few changes, did not help. So I asked for a tad unfill, he did remove .4cc , brought me back to 8.6 cc I have been fine PAin disappeared. I think the pressure on my port or the tubing shifted around internally and caused that strange pain. I may have eaten a little too much and caused that pressure I have no idea... I have not gained anything or lost anything in the last 8 weeks. I am about 10 lbs from goal, so It may be awhile before he will give me a nother fill in the amount of .2 cc. such a small amt, we will see. Good luck in finding that pain.

Why am I always STUCK and PBing?!?!

This is something I recently experienced; mostly it was pain after eating. I got my band 3/09 and have lost about 65 lbs. I never met my goal, and there are about 10 lbs. that come and go at will. When I saw my surgeon on 12/5 he must have misread my intake paperwork because when I went into the room he had a syringe ready. I thought he would take out some of the fill I had gotten on 7/30. Since it had been over 5 months I was sure I had done something, or something had gone wrong with the band. He gave me .5cc talked to me and sent me home. I did liquids for a day and I could feel that I was tight. I did small sips of liquids and I did VERY SMALL bites of food, worked at doing only 1/2 c, slowed down time used eating until last week. I now don't feel the tightness and I haven't had any problems unless I forget to follow the guidelines. Funny thing is I lost 8 lbs. in a week that I had been fighting for a year without doing other than what I mentioned. I plan to try a day of liquids each week to see if it will get things going again.

    plateau...

I had my WLS on 10/1/12 and to date have only lost 63#. I know I have eaten a few things I am not supposed to but have been back on track for a month now and still no weight loss. I haven't gained any but no weight loss is upsetting any ideas?
