  1. I was banded December 3 2006 and have lost 120 lbs including the 20 lbs presurgery from the liquid diet. (Yech!) I'm thrilled at the success and would do it all over again. After a 20 lb gain after the death of out 10 year old grandson from leukemia. (Yes you can gain weight on the lap band if you stuff eat "feel better" junk day in day out, and you just feel worse) I've been on a pretty steady minus 5-6 pounds per month since then. I'm thrilled to have join the Forum!

    4 Month Update!

Congrat's to you on your successful weight loss. I hope all goes well with gaining your muscle back. Sorry to hear that you lost some in the process. Hopefully, others will learn from your mistake.
  3. So I'm looking for stories from lower BMI patients about their weight loss after surgery. Those people who like me have less weight to lose before hitting goal. Let's say 100 lbs and less. Do we hit a higher % of excess weight? Does it come off faster? Anything that you'd like to share about your journey ......
  4. So far I'm feeling great...the first couple of days I was really just so tired! Got lots of rest and yesterday and today I'm a shopping machine. I can tell this is really going to help me lose this weight! What a big deal!! This is huge and I'm pumped! Since when in my life has Wonton Soup and sugar free popsicles been a treat?!? #yesgirl Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  5. What your uncle did was horrible, and I hope surgery will be healing for you. Will you be in therapy during your weight loss process to help you cope with your new body and the new way it will force you to relate to the world? If it's something you can manage, it might not be a bad idea. Although I'm not a survivor of sexual abuse, I can relate to not knowing how to accept male attention. In fact street harassment is one of the few things I'm really worried about regarding life after weight loss. I get some now, but not as much as I know I'll get when I'm smaller, even though I live in a country where it's not as big a problem as others. Truthfully though, I'm not a particularly feminine woman. I wear dresses and skirts everyday now because they're comfy and stretchy and relatively flattering and fashionable, but once I drop down to a 12/14 I think I'll be presenting much more masculinely (get a short haircut, wear menswear inspired looks, etc). Not just to stave off street harassment, I genuinely am something of a tomboy, but I'm hoping a reduction in street harassment will be a bonus.

    Should I have the surgery?

I know how you feel, I canceled my original surgery date which was September 4, 2013 to January 15, 2014 because of all the mixed emotions and feedback from family, especially my mother. My mother and I are best of friends but for some reason she is discouraging me on getting this surgery done, I know any surgery is a high risk procedure but her thought is long term, what are the complications. I work in the medical aspect of seeing the good and the bad with WLS but everyone is different. I joined a weight loss group with my mom and have seen good results. I'm trying to prepare my body and familiarize myself with portion control and help reduce my cravings. I still haven't made up my mind if I'm going to go through with the surgery but little by little as I get closer to my date I know what ever I decide will be because its my choice, no one else's.

    Should I have the surgery?

My highest weight was 360 with a BMI of 60 and when I started considering WLS, I was 330-340 pounds. I flirted with the idea of the DS but in the end I just didn't feel comfortable with it due to the malabsorptave compontent. I opted for the sleeve and promised my self I would my very best to make the sleeve work... I know that IF I'm not successful with the sleeve and IF I develop co-morbidities, I can opt for DS at a later time.... but there is no way that I wanted to have such a powerful surgery unless it was absolutely necessary. I felt that VSG however WAS absolutely necessary. I KNEW it was right for me and nobody was going to talk me out of it.. If I could have done it the old fashioned way and kept it off, then I would have...
  10. Hello everyone! I'm pretty new here but I've been lurking on the website since I found it, a few weeks ago. I'm in the beginner stages of getting the surgery. Last month I met with the doctor who would be my surgeon, he was really nice and concerned which made me feel at ease. But he said I have a dangerous stomach? I later found out what he was talking about(I gain most of my weight around my mid section). Then he recommended the duodenal switch since my BMI is over 60, I said no and that I felt more comfortable with the gastric sleeve. Then after that was all over my mother has now become dead set against it. She believes I can do this the old fashion natural way but I don't think I can. And then I haven't even started the diet i'm suppose to be doing for surgery(I think I will try the liquid diet to make It easier on myself). So now i'm at a cross roads with myself and my mother. I have way over 100lbs to lose and I think i'll end up failing if I do this naturally, I believe the sleeve can help me lose the weight and keep it off. I'm 29 years old if that helps and also in a few years I want to start a family. What are your thoughts on my predicament?

    Should I have the surgery?

I take it your mother is the one paying for the surgery? I would make an appointment to meet with the surgeon and bring her along. Your surgeon should be able to discuss with both of you all of the scientific evidence that shows it verges on impossible for a morbidly obese person to lose a significant amount of weight and maintain that weight loss without surgery. If she has already met with the surgeon and gone over all of the evidence, then I guess just spend a lot of time talking with her. Tell her exactly how being so overweight makes you feel and impacts your life. I know for most of us there is a lot of shame and self-hate involved in that sort of discussion - if that is true for you, dig deep and keep talking. She's your mom and I am sure she loves you and wants you to be happy, but she's probably scared of the risks of surgery. Explain to her that sleeve surgery has the same risk of complications and death as gall bladder surgery -- she wouldn't be demanding you just keep suffering in pain if you needed your gall bladder out, right? She would accept the risks (very small!) and you would get the surgery you need to end the debilitating pain. Well, for most of us, being morbidly obese inflicts severe pain as well, we just mask it better. You can also talk with her about all your previous attempts to lose weight. Help her to see that you have tried, and struggled, and you need this tool to be successful. If your mother still doesn't want to pay for the surgery, that's her right -- check into self-pay options (there's a great board for self-pay patients here) and see what you can do to save up or finance it. Depending on where you go, it might be less expensive than you think. Good luck to you!

    Should I have the surgery?

I totally understand. I thought about having the surgery 4 years ago. I also lived in CA at that time and had started the meetings with the doctors but my family said the same thing. My husband and my family thought I could do it myself if I put my mind to it etc. I decided not to have the surgery. Now fast forward to 2013. I had moved to Texas and gained almost 40 more pounds and my yo yo dieting was just so frustrating. My health had taken a huge slide. I had sleep apnea and high blood pressure . I finally hit the breaking point and started the research again and made doctor appointments. Once I started going to meetings and made up my mind for myself my family followed. They saw that I had made up my mind and I was gong to change my life. By the time I was having my surgery my family was all on board. I am now 5 months post op. I am so happy I moved forward and did the sleeve surgery. . I wish I had done it earlier in my life. I work out 5 days a week. I have lost 71 pounds and I feel so much healthier. My family is so supportive and now see's how I have changed my life and is so happy for me. You also might think about taking your mom to support groups for WLS post and pre op. I have seen many family member's go with loved ones to help them get information that helps them to understand so it is not so scary. Good Luck with what ever you decide and I wish you the best.
  13. Mine gained from eating my leftovers.
  14. While my insurance did not have a 6 month diet requirement my surgeon had a lot of test/classes that I had to attend. It would have been 2.5 months from the time of consult to surgery. One week prior to the surgery my neurologist told me that he could not support doing the surgery because the bloodclot I had suffered five months earlier had not been sufficiently resolved. I was heartbroken. I had lost my required weight (30 pounds) and just wanted to have the surgery. From that point it was another 4 months. I would agree with a previous poster that this is a good time for you to start living a new life style. Determine what causes you to make the wrong food decision. What foods trigger you to eat more. Some research says that when you eat with a crowd you eat more. My experience is that my friends and family who are thin helped me eat less when we were together. I could see when they stopped eating. Waaaayyy before I would have stopped. I really like the 90/10 philosophy. If you eat correctly 90% of the time; you can allow yourself to have fun 10% of the time. One of my issues with dieting is that for months I could eat boring low fat food; but eventually I needed a break. One thing led to another and stopped eating correctly and eventually exercising. I gave myself permission to have treats on occation; but you know what thin people do that all the time.
  15. Hello Everyone! Quick overview.... Started with my highest weight at 328, and was banded at 280 on March 30th 2010 in Mexico. I got all my fills and aftercare from Kaiser North Bay. Lowest weight was 190 in 2014 right after having my first baby. Now after my second baby I am up to 235. I am having problems with my band and finding a "sweet spot" for getting back on track. I am sure my pregnancies did a number on moving things around. I just went to a bariatric doctor yesterday in South San Francisco (my normal one is on vacation, so I saw his colleague) He was unable to fill be due to not finding the port and saying I was too heavy. I was very frustrated since I have NEVER had a problem having a fill even at 260+. My original doctor has told me before when I have asked for a revision that they do not take lapbands out unless it is an emergency situation. The doctor I saw yesterday told me he would take my lapband out anytime without question, but the revision was a different story. He said to even consider it I would have to get down to at least 210, and then we could go from there. I guess I am just wondering if anyone has gotten a revision from Kaiser South San Francisco or Richmond, voluntarily. My doctor keeps saying scar tissue will hinder him from doing anything.... Thanks everyone

Try not to worry about the weight loss right now. Stay off the scale. You need to concentrate on relaxing and getting well. Your body is fighting illness AND healing from major surgery. You no doubt have lots of inflammation and are retaining fluid too. Even people not ill usually stall around 3 weeks post-op. Binge watch some netflix, do crossword puzzles, anything to keep your mind occupied. I hope you get the medical issues resolved and then can continue your journey. Good luck.
  18. Thank you both. I'm really trying to have a good attitude about the food part of this process. Funny thing is that lately food hasn't been as appealing or as enjoyable to me. Great timing and I hope that continues. I've NEVER not enjoyed food like now, so weird. But I'll take advantage of it and move forward. I'm okay with Protein shakes as I have used them many times in my past weight loss efforts. But I will also find protein rich foods I like as well. The countdown is on and I want to see what I can do in these next few weeks!

    23 years young...October 17th!

Hi Molly! Hope you're feeling better I'm 24 (Starting weight 114kg/251lbs) and I had my sleeve done on oct 9, it's been a little over a week now and I'm pretty much recovered. I now weigh around 105kg/231lbs. I'm just worried about scarring! Instead of sutures, my surgeon put derma-glue on it and it's healing well. The first day was hell with lots of gas and plenty of black out moments.. A nightmare. But it got progressively better as the hours went by and I was discharged on the 2nd day. I've been able to drink over 2 litres a day and get my Protein in and I can't wait till I can eat puréed stuff! I can already feel some of my clothes hanging a bit loose I started walking 2 hours a day, 1 hour at a time after the first week. Exercise has become easier cos there's less of me to lug around and do stuff. That part I definitely love. Time to build a new body and start living! My surgeon told me the highest weight loss would be within the first 3 months post surgery, so we need to work our butts off during this period to lose as much weight as possible before it slows, and I intend to do just that!
  20. Make sure you spend a lot of time before your surgery reading the Post-Op forum, if you haven't already! Some questions get asked every single day so you'll be well-prepared if you read in advance. Things like: --omg it's three weeks after my surgery and I haven't lost any weight for the past week, is my surgery a failure? --omg I can drink liquids easily, what is wrong with me? Did my surgery even happen? --omg I'm eating puree and I can eat more than two teaspoonfuls, am I doomed to fail? --my stomach is making weird rumbly noises like a dying moose, is it about to explode? --I had surgery two days ago and don't feel up to running a 10K yet, what is wrong with me? --I had major surgery three days ago where a big part of a vital organ was removed, muscles and nerves were cut and I have incisions all over the front of my body. I am in pain. Is this normal? Should I actually be taking the painkillers that were prescribed for me? --what should I take to the hospital with me? etc etc (as you can see I'm feeling kind of grumpy about endlessly repeated questions this morning, lol -- it is nothing personal, I promise) Good luck on your upcoming surgery! Check in when you can and let us know how everything went

    In the beginning...

I probably should've started this blog at the very beginning of my journey but better late than never right? I guess I'll start from the beginning. Back in High school I wasn't very overweight. I actually looked pretty good now that I look at pics of myself. I wore between and 11-13 and weighed between 145 and 160. After graduation, I married a guy that I shouldn't have and I gained about 80 lbs. So then I was up to 240. After about 2 1/2 years of depression from an abusive relationship we finally seperated. I lost about 30 lbs and I was back into 12/13 and very happy because I met the real love of my life. We dated for about year and he proposed to me. We got married and he deployed to afghanistan 2 weeks later. During his deployment I gained the weight I lost back plus some bringing me to the grand total of 247 lbs. People when then look at me say I don't look that big b ut everyone knows when you actually carry this weight and see it on yourself its a whole different story. Naturally gaining all that weight made me more depressed which put strain on my marriage. I'm so lucky that even though my husband and I had fights to where I thought it was really over, he never gave up on me. He stuck by my side. I am truly blessed. I tried to work out and eat right but you know how that goes... your motivated you start that monday and by thursday your slacking again. I decided to get the band because a friend of mine had it and lost 60 lbs. Also my older sister decided to be banded with me. She was banded Dec. 5. Since being banded on February 16th as of yesterday I've lost 13.5 lbs. I figured out today if I lose 2 lbs a week minimum, I can lose about 66lbs by my birthday (oct. 5) leaving about 9 lbs to go to my goal. I know thats not counting the plateaus that seem inevitable. :cool2: I just really want to do well on this. The stories of people who lost huge are such and inspiration to me and then there are the stories of people who only lost a little and I know its mainly because they probably weren't doing what they were supposed to. I just don't want to mess this up. This was a huge decision I made and I want to be successful. I want to be happy again with myself. I owe to myself and my husband. I want him to have the confident woman he married back. He's been so good to me.Ok well I think thats enough for my first post. Keep in touch, I'll try to update at least once a week....or month...we'll see :wink2: Later Bandsters!

    Plateau?

They refer to a period of time with no changes of weight as a plateau. This is because on a line graph, the line flattens out like the topographical feature. Good luck!
