Gained 2 pounds!!
Sosewsue61 replied to pherrera92's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Do you have a nutritionist? Regular Dr appointments? A bariatric team? You need to address what proper nutrition is needed. Write everything down that you eat in an app like Baritastic - it's easy to use and you need to aim for at least 80 grams of protein, but shoot for higher. Ditch the ice cream, chips, and empty calories. You need nutrition to heal - protein first, then steamed veggies. If you must have a treat - try sugar free popsicles or sf jello, or greek yogurt with a little all fruit jam stirred in BUT only after meeting the protein goals first. You have a 'habit' of night eating - maybe it is anxiety or stress eating and not real hunger. Protein and some full fat cheese will help with being satisfied more than ice cream and chips - those items are slider foods and go down in huge quantities easily. Dense meat will keep you full feeling. Your head hunger will do you in if you let it. Go for a walk before your evening snack. -
Surgery was Monday 7/24. I am struggling getting protein shakes down within an hour and keeping up with hydration with a half an hour before and after. I just feel full. Seem to be having late day bloating and discomfort that is limiting my ability to drink or consume anything after 4-5pm. I have been trying to walk every two hours. Finding little relief. I also have tried 2-3 of blended greek yogurt in between shakes. Is this just gas? When does this go away? Am I putting to much pressure on my stomach? How do you know? I don't see my doctor until next Thursday 8/3. Any suggestions?

I'm 4 weeks after Surgery and I feel like the only thing I can eat is yogurt , sugar free Popsicle's and a 1/2 cup of smoothy with protein powder. Am I ever going to get to enjoy food again? I know smaller portion size is the main problem why we get overweight, but I cant even eat anything!! I'm so emotional and feel I cant get enough calories in to even feel mentally normal. Any advice ??

I'm pre-op as well, but I would ask, why does it have to be breakfast food? Just make breakfast your insignificant meal. Something you eat, only to refuel your body. Right? Eat leftovers. Eat turkey roll-ups. Eat meat salads like chicken/tuna/salmon salad. Eat sardines and mustard! (hehe--caveman style: nekkid, standing over the sink, dressed only in your undies, with the lights out and the refrigerator door open) Just eat 2-3oz of protein, 5 grape tomatoes and be done with it. From everything I read, if you put solid protein in your tum-tum, you will stay satisfied longer anyway--longer than protein drinks/bars. I love having taco meat in the fridge, cuz it's so easy to portion out. I throw in an ounce of spinach, nuke to rewarm. Stir it up. Add some salsa, a dollop of Greek yogurt (sub for sour cream), and meal done! BAM!

I am 4 years out from my RNY. I have had a hard time with meat. I can eat moist wings, which I make a mean SOY SAUCE chicken wing. Yummy Just try different meats sowly. I just now can eat a very very tender steak ( I have waited so loooong for it) One of my favorite before my WLS. We buy a T-bone steak and hubby gives me the very moist tender piece after he pounds it to death. We share it. (He also had WLS) To be honest I had to use Yogurt, beans, cottage cheese, cheese for my protein. Plus I have a protein I add to my coffee to help me get my protein in. Heck it has only been the last 9 months that I even tried bread. I buy our famous (around here anyway) DAVE'S KILLER BREAD. Al kinds of good stuff in it. Whole grain lots of nuts etc. I can eat 1 piece. I also use nuts and P. butter almond butter. All great in moderation. Good Luck!! I hope you can do better with your meat challenge.

16 weeks Post Op and need help
YeaMe replied to Emileana's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
At four months out you should not be having any pain. Could you be eating too big of bites and not chewing enough? Most importantly, you need to see your surgeon so he can investigate - it shouldn't hurt. I am at 5 1/2 months out and usually only get about 850 calories in. I have to eat 6 meals to be able to get that much in. I can only tolerate 2-3 ounces at a time. Things I have found that work for me to get in extra protein are: lattes (Fairlife milk-has extra protein); yogurt, and chicken. I can't eat beef or eggs, yet. Also, I cut a Quest Protein Bar (chocolate chip cookie dough) into six slices, smash them down, and bake them. They are extremely crunchy and I usually eat 1/2 a bar a day. I know I will have to discontinue this habit soon, but it helps me get the extra protein and calories in. -
Just keep sipping...try protein water or pre-made protein shakes like Premier. I'm 1 week post op today and able to get about 64 oz in. Just take sips. I stopped pain medicine immediately after I was released and did chewable children's tylenol. It could be the meds. I haven't taken any more tylenol for a few days. I've also been do french onion or beef broth, move onto yogurt today. Stay strong!

I'm back on 2 a day of the shakes, the caramel, I have to hold my nose so I don't smell them but after a couple of days, I got used to them again. Between that, coffee in the morning, a Propel water when I work out, and a Swell bottle full of water with Crystal light, I'm doing much better. Going to the bathroom a lot, which is good, because, for a while, I didn't go at all. (And I know, you have to pee to lose weight...) That is probably the bulk of my stall. Plus I get the 60g of protein and I have some chicken breast too, and a yogurt. I'm not weighing myself, going to give it a break, but I'm thinking I've kicked the stall's ass.

3 days post surgery

I had a hard time with the protein shakes as well, it's like you just can not do it after a point. I would suggest focus on fluids first. Try other sources of protein. One day I took a 1/4 cup of vanilla Greek yogurt and mixed in one scoop of strawberry whey protein with 25 gm protein per scoop. It didn't taste the greatest but was a small amount to get down and a significant amount of protein and not a shake. Or sometimes just changing flavors helps. Try not to over do it for pain. Take it easy. Walk around the house and just give yourself a chance to heal. I spent the first 2 weeks with a pillow on the couch watching tv and just walking, nothing more strenuous. I know as mom's you always feel like there's something to do, but try to let it go for a bit and rest. I hope you feel better. -
Just been Sleeved

There is a brand called 'SixStar' whey protein. That I found at Walmart which was unflavored and it is advertised to dissolve in anything on the label. I have added it to broth and yogurt with no change in consistency or flavor so I would say it works very well. Just be careful though when you add it to anything hot, you don't want it to be so hot that it destroys the protein molecules. -
What are you all eating on the pureed phase

Hi! I just finished day 2 of my 14 day liquid diet before my VSG on Aug 11. I've never had any issues with heartburn or acid reflux, until I started on all liquids. I'm drinking premier protein Shakes, Greek yogurt, Tom soup, broth... I'm worried it will get worse after surgery. Has anyone else experience this? Any advice??

1week post op and hungry
GotProlactinoma replied to Jennifer143's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Mine was on the 19th so I probaly counted days wrong. I had an IV today to help against dehydration. I also tried a tiny bit of the Greek yogurt. Need to make more chicken bone broth but no energy. -
RNY Bypass was 2 weeks ago today. Can't believe how far I've come in just two weeks! My surgeon has food "phases" each lasting two weeks. Phase 1 postop is liquid only (No liquids on day of surgery, water on 2nd day after upper GI confirming no leaks, & then ease into protein when possible. Jello, yogurt, and Pudding are okay in this phase. Phase 2 is "Very Soft Foods" & that starts today! My first meal is 1/4 of Egg Beaters. Fingers crossed!

The scales will not move

I'm on the two shakes a day, plus I do have chicken breast. I try to eat an egg every once in a while, and Greek yogurt gives me 11g of protein too. I think I'm finally hitting the 60-80g of protein daily, now that I can stomach the shakes again, and the Premier Protein shakes have 30g each, I may even top the protein requirements if I have yogurt and chicken in one day. I think the calories are my biggest issue. The two shakes, the chicken, the yogurt, that's only about 614 calories. My doctor wants me to stay in the 600-800 calorie limit, but even if he didn't, I'm not sure I could top it. The only way would be to go back to my regular coffee intake, which is a latte with whole milk and caramel, but those are empty calories and I hate to do that. I will think of something. I have a tuna fish and whole wheat cracker fetish, maybe I can try 1-2 whole wheat crackers or something that will boost my calorie intake. This is so funny, me on the other end of this conundrum, trying to UP my calorie intake. How ironic is that? Again, thanks for all your help!! -
I know that we are suppose to eat plain yogurt. How do you eat it? It's gross by itself. How do you make it more palatable?
-
I've added stuff such as PB2 peanut butter powder, strawberries, blueberries, Torani sugar-free syrups, Equal packets, and so forth. Use your imagination and preferences to conjure up a compromise to make the yogurt more palatable.

That's some great advice, thank you! I know that your body is going through a starvation mode and hanging on to every pound...I hear that from my trainer and nutritionist. I'm going to stop weighing myself daily, I was only doing it for a chart for my nutritionist and she let me off the hook. I'm continuing to work on my protein intake and definitely trying to hit 60 every day! Question for you: Do you drink your protein mostly or eat it? Without a shake, there's no way I can hit 60. My Premier Protein shakes have 30g each and that's the only way I will be able to do it, although I try to have yogurt and chicken breast (rotisserie from Whole Foods) every day so I won't be pure liquid every day. I have heard that there is a difference between drinking it and eating it. Can you share your experience? Thank you for your words of encouragement. It is depressing, but I have to focus on what I am doing and stop lamenting on what I don't have. It's a struggle, but I'm getting past it. -
Having trouble getting my daily protein
hmills653 replied to sylvia2017's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
This is similar to the sample menu I was given. I understand it's a good concept but I know my dietician wanted to to start eating that way at 3 weeks. I am 8 weeks out and I have to wait at least any hour after I eat to be able to drink or I can feel it. Then I am finally able to drink about 6 oz at a time, but then I have to wait at least a half hr before I can drink more. On the days I work its hard sometimes to even get a lunch break sometimes. I do 12 hr shifts, unfortunately we've been understaffed for over a year now making it worse. But I do have to eat multiple times a day to get enough protein. Yesterday I had 2 eggs before I left for work at 6 am. While at work anytime I went to the back to grab something for a patient I passed the break room, so I stop and drink some water. Around 10 am I ate a string cheese. At 1 pm I ate a 20 gm protein bar for lunch. At 5:30 I had a Greek yogurt. When I got home at 8:30 I had 2 oz of chicken for dinner. During the day I was able to get in about 36 oz of fluid and 77 gm of protein. Ideally I shouldn't be eating dinner that late, and yes I should get more fluid in. But I feel for working on a busy floor at the hospital I did pretty good and there's no way I could've done it without snacks in between meals. I haven't gotten to the point where I'm able to add in vegetables yet though bc I get full off the protein but I know it will come in time. At home I can do a little better without the time constraints of work. -
Having trouble getting my daily protein
Dashofpixiedust8 replied to sylvia2017's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
This is not true. Many people after surgery, whether it's fresh out or years down the line, can't get all their protein and calorie goals in just 3 meals. My 6 times a day usually consist of: 1. A Greek yogurt. 2. A hard boiled egg and some cheese. 3. 3 oz lean protein and some veggies (maybe a small salad or steamed veggies). 4. A cottage cheese. 5. 3 oz protein with veggies again. 6. Protein shake or piece of fruit. I am over a year out and can not eat only 3 meals because it hurts if I try. Also I find this helps curb hunger because as your stomach heals your hunger will come back. -

Still very painful. I'm day 2 post op. Got home yesterday. Can hardly drink only 15 MLS at a time. Full liquids start today, so I'll see how the yogurt and protein shake go. I feel like puking. -
Ended up staying a bit longer at the hospital because of pain but I'm home now. Having a rough time getting in and out of bed or getting comfortable. Gas has been kind of a pain but all manageable. I'm really surprised at how normal I mostly feel. Other than the gas pain and incision pain I feel like myself. Was able to get down part of a protein shake and a light and fit yogurt smoothie as well as most of my water. Just got to remember to take small sips lol otherwise it doesn't feel great. I like cottage cheese, but Triple Zero Oikos yogurt is so good and I think more protein than cottage cheese. It is not tart like a lot of Greek yogurt.

Hey Coyote< How are you feeling TODAY? this is how im getting my 60 grams of protein in a day now that we can have yogurt. I take my premiere clear protein liquid (put it in the freezer i make it really cold before its frozen) pour it into my poland spring sports bottle with the pop up cap to sip throughout the day) Then, throughout the day i sip/eat these three items 1. Premiere protein liquid in my poland spring bottle = 20 g protein 2. Oikis tripple 0 greek yogurt = 15 g protein 3. Premier protein shake (i prefer banana) = 20 g protein. If im craving something to crunch i suck on a sugar free ice pop and im doing fine! I do have apple sauce in the morning with my crushed meds and if im craving something else i usually go to my V8. Today is a milestone for me! under 200's i n almost a year ..given Ive only lost 4 lbs since surgery but i Lost 10 before surgery so im a happy camper! going to keep going with the protein :-D

We must of had our surgery on the same day - July 18th? I too have had troubles getting the water in or enough liquids for that matter. I tried Greek yogurt but I think it's too heavy cause it caused diarrhea. Been really weak and tired, but tomorrow is another day and will try to get all the liquid in. Keep up the fight.
