  1. I posted a while ago about my weight loss, and regain and taking control again. Started at 320 or there abouts 5'2" and 54 years old 10 years ago. VSG. Lost weight and got to 180 pounds. Over 8 years I regained to 220. Started slow weight loss / getting back into control in mid July this past year. I have now lost 30 pounds. Back to 190. I started my weight loss with a BMI over 54 in the 300's. I am still considered obese at 190 and a BMI just under 34; but darn it, I am so flipping proud of myself. Yes, I am 64 years old. No, I can't really exercise ... but I do some short walks and I garden and vegetable garden, take care of my chickens. I had to get a local teen to help me lift 40 pound bags of feed this year; but I can still haul the 25 lb bags.... and I continue to work full time in my career. Life is good. In my weight loss journey this time out, I stopped at 20 pounds lost and took a break. I experimented with adding in more foods, and balancing out what I needed to do to maintain that 20 pound loss, and did that for a month, then decided to lose some more. I think that i never really paid all that much attention to how much, what kinds of foods how I Prepare them.... and exactly how my body reacts to it. I use very little salt at home. When I eat out, I gain weight from the added salt. Yes, it is water weight from the salt; but being on lock down at home and working from home, with no lunches out for meetings.... going to have to find places to lunch that cut the sodium out !!! Going to continue what I am doing. Taking breaks, slow weight loss and maybe make it down to overweight, or not.... but will be pleased to keep that 30 # off !!! Still using my VSG. 10 years later.

    Hey Grace! Sorry things are going so slowly for you! I have been a slow loser without the surgery, as well as pretty slow since; sounds like you were able to lose weight more rapidly before. I also feel like time is moving SOOOOO slowly during this pandemic that it makes it even worse! I am sorry you feel so hungry. Have you tried eating your desired amount (say 2 oz. of protein plus some veggies;) waiting 10 minutes and if you still feel hungry slowly eating some more protein? If you fee "sated" that may make you less hungry for longer. Might be worth a try. For what it is worth, I am not filled up by the protein drinks, although i know some folks are. I also use a different kind of protein drink that does not use artificial sugars, so that may be why. As a result, I use the drink as an after dinner "snack"; if I feel particularly hungry I mix it with Fairlife milk (1/2 cup). Big protein hit, and stops me (usually) from other mindless snacking. Late night eating is my Achilles heel! My latest item I need to keep the heck out of my house is mixed nuts....I will try to "eat a handful" and before I know it I've blown 200 calories! Hang in there Grace; I hope the scale starts to move, the weather gets better, the pandemic ends, and all of our spirits start to lift!

    I feel like I’m experiencing a 3 month stall as well however it’s not my first stall. Might be my third. Still averaging 10 lbs a month so I will take it. 260 to 245 since Jan 13
  4. Anyone post opt at least 10 years? Well i am and I have gained more weight than  when i started 10 years ago.. slowly been gaining weight so i had my band tightened in 2018. started throwing up so bad i had to have it emptied in 2019. i have gained 30 pds! i have an appt to have it filled again but this pandemic has had them reschedule.. i am miserable.. i am 300pds ..5"9! Any suggestions? i started at 275 when i was banded.. lost 75 pds the first year!! now look@!! please no trolls

  5. Well done. I'm almost 5wks (16th March) post op from a mini bypass and barely losing weight. It's so depressing and I'm struggling bad I've lost 19lbs since surgery and 129lbs total since January 2019. started January 2019 at 400lbs, 290 at surgery and 271 today.

    I was 204 pounds the day of my surgery. I lost 20 something prior to my surgery as a part of the program I am in. I looked up my records: 8/13/18: 204 10/1/17: 188.6 16 pounds or so, I was eating 600ish calories a day, and yes it pissed me off. I dug deep and knew logically something had to give simply because it’s impossible NOT to lose weight with so few calories. I had a month when I lost 2 pounds! I lost weight very slowly, but I’ve lost 100 pounds *80 after surgery, and I’ve been keeping it off. It isn’t easy and it is frustrating but you can do this is you want it. I’ve posted my weight loss chart here before, I’ll dig it out and repost it. You are not alone and you’re not the only person who has this experience. It sucks, but it is what it is. You CAN do this and you can be frustrated.
  7. Oh thanks! I was due for a thyroid test in March but had my surgery 16th and COVID-19 shut all blood clinics so need to wait to see if it is. Hopefully get some answers 😊 I was stalled last week and gained 1lb and only lost 1.5lbs this week. It's really getting me down.
  8. I was diagnosed with hypothroidism in July 2019, and had Loop DS. I've had a helluva time the last month or so with dizziness, fatigue, etc. My primary care doc did blood tests to check some things and found me potassium deficient and my thyroid underactive... again! I had been on the right dose before surgery, but your body goes through changes and so she had to up my dose. I've been losing slightly more weight in the last week since she upped my dose as I lost five pounds instead of my average of 3-4 so I'd say it's working. Hope they figure out what's going on and if it's your thyroid find the right dosage!
  9. Thanks. I just wondered because I was diagnosed with underactive thyroid in February 2019 and found the correct dose for me around June (150mg thyroxine). I'll call my surgeon Monday 😊
  10. Has anyone been diagnosed hypothyroidism and had a gastric bypass? I'm 4wks post op and been so tired and lost a lot less weight than expected. Typical hypothyroidism symptoms. I can't get my blood test done for a while due to COVID-19. Just wondered if one of the internal changes after surgery were thyroid hormone production? Thanks

    Bacon....

    I also go not care for eggs or bananas. I also do not like artificial sweeteners. So I struggled hard my first 10 weeks after surgery. I was able to get my protein with FairLife Milk and CorePower protein drinks. I am now 6 months post op. I can not eat bacon or sausage. It makes me rather nauseous. I would suggest trying other things that provide protein with less fat and sodium. But who am I to say. I do not want to return to my bad eating habits. I struggle with being able to exercise due to me being handicapped. We all have our own struggles and vices. I recommend searching your soul. Find out what and who you are in your self. It is not an easy process, but you find out what you have been lying to yourself about for years, in my case decades. After all if you have told yourself this crap, what have you told others. Be true to yourself , or your life will be false to you.
  12. Ok, I am almost 7 mo out and am down 130lb over all. Weight loss has slowed to a trickle, down only 6lb in the last month, nothing in a week. The past 2 days I have struggled to stay full and Wednesday was a bad day, made some not great choices(still didn't over eat just not good choices for one of my meals and I ate a bite of a cookie) and Thursday morning had to run for the bathroom 2x in 30 min before I ate anything at all for the day. I STRUGGLED to stay full yesterday and I made good choices etc, Here was how I ate yesterday. 5:30am Protein Shake 30g protein 160cal 8:30am 3 slices american cheese and 3 crackers. 10:30am Protein Shake 30g protein 160 cal & 3/4cup veggie soup over 45 min. 2:30pm 130 cal coffee drink and 30 min later almonds, dried cranberries and a few cheese cubes 160cal 6:45pm Garden Veggie Burger(110 cal 11 g protein) with one slice of cheese(80 cal 5 g protein), 6 olives, 1 cherry tomato, slice of cucumber and 1/2 of a breadstick. I was SUPER thirsty yesterday and I think I drank too soon after eating/with meals. Did it again with breakfast drank a ton of water during and after I ate. Then the light bulb went off too much water TOO soon. I am just feeling very very frustrated and can not seem to stay full the last few days. I know I have not stretched my pouch out but I worry about that all the time. I do make good choices 95% of the time. I get lots of steps in at work but miss going to the gym of course.I do try to get to the park and walk when the weather is good. I do not want to fail at this

    Quarantine?

    I am having a mixed experience with this quarantine. I work for a school district. We went on Spring Break, just as school was cancelled for 2 weeks. A week later the schools were closed an additional 2 weeks. And then of course, eventually our schools were closed for the rest of the school year and we were given "stay at home" orders. After Spring Break though, we were immediately transitioned to "online" education. I am not a teacher, but have been working from home since this all began. It is weird. I have a position in which some days I have a lot I can do (but not all of it from home). And there are days I have NOTHING to do. But, I MUST be available to work if called to duty. This is where the challenge comes in. I have to sit by my phone and e-mail all day long, and I have to be able to go to work at a moments notice if asked to. So... I end up sitting by my computer way too much of the day. Much moreso than I would if I were at work. I am doing my best to take a long walk before my work hours start. I am enjoying these long early morning walks. But then sitting by my computer/phone for 8 hours is really difficult. I do try to do chores and projects, but I find that I have to be very careful what I get into... because I lose track of time and I MUST check my e-mails all the time. I also find that running around the house I tend to lose track of my phone, which I must also answer the minute it rings. So frustrating. And then by the time I have gotten through my work day.... I am too tired to do another workout, so I end up sitting and watching tv. My motivation stinks by the time my "shift" is over. Food: On one hand, I am doing the grocery shopping instead of my husband most of the time and that is great. I do a much better job of buying food the family and I can and will eat. I also am making a point to cook myself - a family meal that I can and will eat with my family. Again, husband usually cooks, but I can never eat what he cooks. So... again... this is good. But what is NOT good is that before I had surgery, my sons weren't living at home and I was able to convince my husband to get rid of our "stockpile" of emergency foods (aka canned food). I also got rid of all the junk that I didn't want in the house (aka junk food, non-nutritious carb heavy foods). It was great because there was very little temptation. Now, with colleges cancelled, younger son has moved home. So now we have two kids at home again (daughter is in high school). And since we are ALL home ALL DAY LONG EVERY DAY, this means we needed to go back out and buy all the crap that I had gotten rid of! Especially since hubby works in a hospital. This means the chances of us getting COVID-19 are much higher than the average family. And if we do, we need to truly quarantine for a minimum of 2 weeks, meaning don't go out even to the grocery stores. So... every-time we went to the grocery store, we had to buy a little more of all the "emergency" food that I worked so hard to get out of my life and pantry. How am I doing with that? Well, I am resisting most of the canned food which is great. The only thing I eat of that is baked beans now and then, and we cook with stewed tomatoes all the time (always). But I do find myself eating more carbs as a whole. Not a ton, but enough that it is definitely having a negative effect. And the sweets... I am finding myself craving more and since there are m ore in the house for the kids, it is getting harder to resist the cravings. I literally just reached my goal weight a week or so ago. Now I am bloated and up 7 pounds. SEVEN. Today was a much better day, but I need some serious will power. I have been home all day every day for a month now (with the exception of quick trips to the grocery stores and into my office to take care of some things I can only do there). The first 4 weeks were fine, but week 5 was bad. And we are going to be home at least another 2 weeks, and I won't be surprised if it gets extended. But even if it doesn't get extended... I already know I have another 5 weeks of working from home. Sitting at my computer and phone all day. And that is definitely going to be tough. On the bright side... I have fixed up my backyard and have been enjoying spending time in it relaxing and taking care of my fruit trees that I planted last year. And I have been trying to declutter. And I love having my son home again (well, that one is mixed... he is being a lazy bum and not cleaning up after himself lol). And I am hoping to get into a better routine in the next couple days. The AM walks are not enough... need to get myself going in the evening too. Edited to add... the worst part of all this for me personally is that I have been forced to cancel my summer plans... my "walk across Spain". That was my motivation to keep going with my fitness routine. That was my reward for all my hard work. That was my way of finishing the journey of getting physically fit. And now it is gone. (First world problem I know). I am extremely grateful that my family is healthy. My oldest son I think DID have COVID-19... he had ALL the symptoms plus pneumonia and several work related risk factors... but they did not test him. He did test negative for the flu, but we will never know for sure about COVID-19 unless they do antibody testing on him. But a few days after he wasn't tested, a co-worker did test positive. Anyhow... he is healthy and back at work again. Grateful for that!
  15. Need help since staying on track while at home because Covid 19. surgery was done 08/01/2018 highest weight 196, lowest 134 September 2019 I'm struggling gained 5 lbs. What are others doing to cope with boredom hunger and limited excericise
  16. It took me 8-10 weeks to even get some of my energy back I couldn’t keep anything on my stomach and was extremely weak. I couldn’t even walk to the end of my driveway and had to get 3 banana bags at the hospital. Now I have much more energy than I have ever had
  17. Hi, I have done my surgery last June 2019, I have lost 80 lbs from 310 lbs. You can go through all you appt , when things come back nanual you finish all your tests. Don't forget their are many people has been post back for surgery. Good luck.
  18. Hey Guys, I just found this site after a hopeful search looking for someone who has or is going through something similar. I had RNY with a Minimizer Ring on the 18th of February 2020. I am 43 and 5ft 9In. My surgery weight was 296 pounds and I am now 238 pounds. A loss of 58 pounds so far. I had been planning/researching the surgery for 5 years and after my last failed attempt of maintaining, went ahead with surgery with full knowledge of what to expect (well so I thought). For full disclosure, my weight problems I think were based on years of yo-yo dieting. Mainly extreme calorie cutting and exercise to get to normal weight. However, when off the ‘diet wagon’ I would only eat a huge meal once a day after not eating all day and being starving when I got home. Usually meals were very much carb based with heavy sauces. I would eat normally on the weekend, but overly big portion sizes. I am not a sweet tooth or an emotional eater, nor am I a fussy eater. I also loved coke zero, which I have just found out is apparently a trickster. Anyways, I think I ruined my metabolism and losing weight was no longer working like it used to! What I expected: · 5-10 days of a keto kind of flu whilst my body adjusted to fat burning mode · Minimal appetite, but still some kind of signal I needed to eat · Being easily satiated with small amounts of food · Having to chew my food 20-30 times · No water 30 mins before or 60 mins after food · Protein first, avoid simple carbs What I did not expect · Persistent nausea · Aversions to all meat/poultry/fish and eggs (physically make me heave) and other random things (sour cream, mushrooms, pumpkin soup, cheese that has been grilled) · Complete and utter exhaustion to the point where my personal hygiene is embarrassing because sometimes I can’t muster enough energy to have a shower for days · Dumping sometimes trying food for the first time, sometimes after having food that did not make me dump last time (for me it is sweating, heart racing, severe cramps and diarrhoea within 30 mins of eating) · Being so uncomfortably full even if it is just water, or a couple of tiny bites of food. I get less than 1000 calories in a week · That chewing the food so many times would make most foods unpalatable and having to spit it out or throw up · The amount of times I belch, heave and bring up thick saliva……all day…..its disgusting and embarrassing! I had read many stories before the surgery, some positive and some negative and was always quick to judge people thinking they were just negative Nancy’s or hypochondriacs and like attention. So it hard to write this post knowing a lot of people will think what I did. I have had scans with contrasts and there are no issues. I have been hospitalised for dehydration, low potassium and high blood ketones. Ketones are normal due to weigh loss. Dehydration and potassium easily fixed with IV fluid. I have a gastroscope tomorrow morning to check if there is scar tissue etc causing my issues. BUT WHAT IF THEY FIND NOTHING???? WILL THIS BE MY FOREVER??? HAS ANYONE DEALT WITH ANYTHING SIMILAR OR IS IT JUST MY BODY FREAKING OUT AND TAKING LONGER THAN NORMAL TO ADJUST? Thanks if you read this far, it really means a lot. I would love to hear from you.     First (tele)visit tomorrow

    Well, I’m glad I didn’t drive for the initial appointment because I would have been pretty annoyed to have driven all that way for like 10 minutes. We went over my medical history very briefly and she described the surgery. Nothing I haven’t read here a hundred times. I did mention my concern about the sleeve is that I have pretty bad daily heartburn right now so looks like I’m going to get an endoscopy prior to take a look at that. So I’m submitted to surgery to find out the process from there. Overall the telemedicine visit felt kinda strange-doesn’t really feel like I had an appointment to be honest. But with how convenient it was i would love to do the nutritionist/psych evaluation like this if at all possible. Now I can find out what my prior authorization looks like at least!

My 23 year old daughter had gastric sleeve surgery on 3/4/2020 due to her polysistic ovary disorder - it seemed to have gone extremely well - she tolerated things well and drs were very pleased . About a week later , she developed a low grade fever which has persisted everyday all day ever since -6 weeks ago now ! She says she has no other symptoms but did have a bit of a headache the first few days. The fever has been between 99'.5--101.3. Though she claims it's rarely over 100. Something. I've been extremely concerned - this is very bad timing obviously . Her live in fiancé has been forced into going into work ( and he's non essential to boot ) until the doctors finally ordered a COVID19 test 10 days ago ( 4,5 weeks after surgery )! Then she had to wait 6 dats to get result which was negative . That's the hoof news but bad news is she still has this fever . They did bloodwork and it was fine . Now she's had a consultation with immunologist who doesn't know what's going on but have her a follow up early next week . Thus is my question - can the change in hormones ( and weight ? She's already list 30+lbs) cause a low grade fever ? She even got her period back this week which she hasn't had for years . I'm worried : she says she's not but I really think she is . Any help would be greatly appreciated 🙏🏻
  21. I began this process originally back in October. Due to the up front $, I postponed my appts until after Christmas. I was set to have fast track surgery in early May. I called my clinic Monday since I was scheduled for a follow up appt yesterday morning and I assumed it would be canceled for now. They said no for me to be there at my appt time. It's a 3 hour drive for me to get to my nearest clinic. After that appt, my clinic called to say all elective surgeries have been postponed until further notice. That they would let me know when they opened back up. WHY they didn't tell me while I was there is beyond me. Then right after that phone call today, I got another call from the Pumonary clinic (same hospital different building) saying they wanted to reschedule my appt from March that they canceled due to Covid-19 and wanted to see me next Tuesday for my lung test. I think this test is to see if you can handle anesthesia and also if you need a sleep study for sleep apnea. I'm a little confused why I'm still going on thru the process if the main office is closed until further notice. I feel insane at this point since it's been such a rollercoaster with different departments telling me different things. I have BCBS of MS insurance. I'm worried if it's postponed too long, the tests won't be valid and my insurance won't pay for a second round of testing. Anyone else having conflicting feedback with their processes? If anything it's good to say it to people that may understand my frustration with not knowing if I should be hopeful or prepare for disappointment.
  22. Hi everyone! I'm 4 months post op (RNY) and I'm a little concerned regarding my weight loss journey in the upcoming months. The loss has started to slow down while I'm still very overweight and I'm worried about how to maintain a "normal" metabolism to be successful in long term maintenance. Would love to get your feedback as my nutritionist has not been very helpful in this sense. Some stats and specific concerns (sorry for the long post but I want to be thorough): Age: 28 yo female Height: 5'3 Starting weight: 297 lbs. Starting BMI: 52 Surgery weight (Dec '19): 259 lbs Current weight (4 months out): 191lbs. Current BMI: 34. Food: My daily average intake is of about 500 calories (450-650 range) and I get about 60 grams of protein (eat mostly protein and still use protein supplements). I follow my plan which is based on portion size and not weight or calories, but I weigh and track my intake because "eyeballing" doesn't really work for me. While I'm good in that range of food intake in terms of hunger, I could definitely eat more if "needed". I've been able to stick to my plan during coronavirus lockdown no problem. Exercise: Desk job. I do very light weight training about 3-4x a week and short walks on the treadmill 2x a week. I used to swim more often but now that's not a possibility. Other: I'm trying to up my water intake but it's about 40 - 65 oz a day. I take all my vitamins and supplements. I don't have diabetes or any hormonal issues that I'm aware of. While I have been consistently losing weight (60 pounds in 4 months), I'm starting to notice a slow down and have hit a couple stalls (one lasting 3 weeks). I want to make sure that I keep a good rate so naturally I thought about increasing exercise and maintaining my current diet (reducing is not a possibility) but I'm also concerned that: If I start exercising a lot now to try to speed it up, then as time progresses and I hit more stalls, they will be very hard to break as the exercise would have to be incremental and there is only so much time/energy/will power that I have. So do you recommend adding more exercise at this stage to maximize loss in the first months or should I "wait" until I need the extra kick? Same thing with food, by eating 500 calories a day, am I sabotaging future weight loss? It will be impossible for me to cut down on calories if I hit a stall. I'm also worried that as soon as I start increasing the calorie count I will gain a lot of it back or completely stop my weight loss. I know that 500 kcal a day is not sustainable in the long run. I have read so many threads trying to find an answer but there doesn't seem to be a right one. My nutritionist just tells me to "stick to portion size and allowed meals" and not look at calories when I ask these questions. My surgical team has told me to just follow her instructions and keep the focus on weight training. Any personal experiences, words of advise, etc would be highly appreciated. I'm starting to obsess over these concerns of balancing maximizing weight loss in the first months (which I understand are were biggest loss is achieved) and mid/long term success. I know comparing journeys is not ideal (it has definitely been a source of frustration as I see people with lower BMIs losing faster than me) Thanks!
  23. I'm excited to be so close to my goal weight. I had my surgery done in Mexico back on October 16th 2019 with Pompeii Surgical. I also follow their patients support group and wanted to update on here for those looking to get the gastric bypass! My Stats: Starting weight- 256lbs at 5'9" and 48inch waist.Ring size 12 then , shoe size 11.5 also. Now I'm- 167lbs at 5'8" and a 30 inch waist. Ring size 9 now, shoe size 9 also.   24. the above poster is right - 95 lbs is a healthy weight for someone 4'11" tall. Maybe I'm missing something here ??? Also, why are they talking about doing revision surgery? You mean reverse the duodenal switch? I was a slow loser from the get-go, so I can't relate to losing super fast, but the last 20 lbs or so were a bear to get off. My weight loss slowed to a crawl (we're talking like 2 lbs a month). I also gained 10 lbs after hitting my lowest weight, which I really needed to do, and I stabilized there for two years (I've since gained 10 more lbs with I did NOT want to do, but we're working on it...)
  25. I'm only 5 weeks post-op for a sleeve, so I can't answer your questions. However, I wanted to comment that I don't understand why they are so worried! Assuming your stats are correct and you're 4'11", 137 lbs is still overweight. And 113 lbs in 10 months is fast, but well within the range of what I have seen here. How fast were you losing when they had you food journal and try to slow it down? What did you slow it down to? What have your calories been? Are you hungry, or still forcing yourself to eat? Are you having any other symptoms that indicate mal-absorption of vitamins or some other problem? Did insurance pay for your surgery, or did you self-pay? Do you have some particular reason to not trust the place you've been going, or just a general mistrust of doctors (which I get.)
