    November 2022 surgery support!

    Wow! Well done. I’m having such a hard time drinking what I need to while just sipping. Plus, eating is a nuisance. I’ve stalled on weight loss in my second week bc I’m not eating/drinking enough…I suspect. What’s your schedule/ technique?

    November 2022 surgery support!

    Had my 2 week follow up, everything is going great. I have to start my gall bladder medicine today and in 2 weeks my B12 injections. Everything I have had to eat has settled good, and I'm consistently drinking 50-55oz which he said was good. I have not been doing much activity, I figured I will start when the dreaded 3-week stall comes around and that will trick it lol, let's see if that works lol

  4. Hey Everyone! So, I am 7-weeks post op, robot-assisted RnY gastric bypass. I have recently had some increased diaphragm pressure and discomfort. No real pain, but pressure and it is quite uncomfortable. I'm able to eat and drink. I haven't had any nausea or vomiting. I'm going to reach out to my surgical team, but I wondered if anyone else might have had this, too. It's possible that this was caused by wearing elastic-waist pants that were too snug - I did that for a couple of days in a row. Thanks! Jeanne

    Gas problems and binder.

    I did not get a binder but did hold my belly with a pillow when getting in and out of bed, coughing and sitting. Held with my hand when walking and laughing. Gas pains for me were gone in 2 days, any discomfort at week 1.     Gas problems and binder.

    The gas will pass in a few days, basically you just have to suffer through it. Sorry, I know it sucks! I wasn't told I had to wear a binder, but was given one int he hospital. I wore it once and it made me more uncomfortable than comfortable so I took it off and kind of kept my hand/forearm against my belly to stop the giggle (haha) when I walked. You could just ask your team if you could take it off, or just take it off and see how you feel. I slept in a recliner for the first few days because laying flat wasn't comfortable. After that, sleeping on my side was a bit uncomfortable after about a week (i think) I was back to normal and could sleep however I wanted.

    I DID IT !

    Decided a couple months back to try to drop a few more pounds. My weight had been fairly stable, between 172 and 175 for the last two years. As you can tell, I take my time, and after losing a couple pounds, I take a break and just maintain that weight loss. Losing the weight isn't the issue for me, but maintaining is. My weight is now between 168 and 170. Maybe not a huge difference; but for me.... I do not remember being in the 160's since college.... and that was like 1977..... so now at 66 years old, and a dozen years post VSG; I am down over 150 pounds from my highest weight. Age does do odd stuff to the body. But still working 40 hours a week, gardening, have my hens and fruit trees and vegetable gardens.... Of course, I can't recall how to update my ticker..... will research some. Updated !!!
  8. Yep, the gas is in your abdominal cavity not your digestive system & the pain occurs as it rises & gets trapped under your lungs. It escapes by attaching itself to water molecules in your lungs & you breathe it out. Best things to help are walking (gentle but regular walks around your house, garden or down the street as you’re able), marching on the spot, rising your arms up & down, slow deep breathing & heat packs. The activity helps move the gas up & breathing more deeply or heavily helps it escape. It can take some a week for theirs to fully dissipate.
  9. There’s grazing & there’s grazing. Grazing when you eat an appropriately portioned size healthy meal over a few hours or eat several small healthy meals over the day that meet your caloric & nutritional needs are fine. Anything else, like grazing just to eat, or for boredom, etc. or grazing beyond just a mid morning &/or mid afternoon snack can be worrying & lead to the weight gain fear you have. Consider what you’re grazing on & why you’re grazing. Do you exceed your caloric need by grazing? Maybe try the mini meal grazing or eating a meal by picking at it over a few hours. Or even reduce your grazing to just a single between meal snack. (I snack three times a day. It gives me a needed additional 25 odd grams of protein but still fits within my caloric needs.) Worth trying.

    Ugh I hope you guys feel getter! It seems it's hitting everyone I got sick too! Mine was Covid. My symptoms weren't too bad but I've been stalled ever since 🤦🏻‍♀️ it's really annoying!

    August surgery buddies!

    I definitely need to start exercising more, and I have a fitbit, but I lost my charger. I was walking outside, but not that it's getting a lot colder and slippery at times, I plan to rejoin a gym. I'm just finishing up my final assignments at university, which are all due next weekend. However, I don't know if I'll have the time to work out five times a week. Walking outside is easy, but going to the gym takes time. I pretty much just have the time from when I finish work until my son needs to be picked up or comes home. Some days that's an hour, some days only half an hour or less. I definitely don't have the time to work out with a trainer, but I plan to have a trainer I know create a plan for me that I can follow on my own. In other news, I had my hair cut to shoulder length today. My hair looks thicker, but I think I look worse. Not necessarily older, but worse. At least, it will take some time getting used to. Maybe I'll look better after I've lost more weight. If not, the hair will hopefully grow back.

    November 2022 surgery support!

    Hi doing well here 2 weeks post op. Have been eating tuna with lots of yogurt, had chili once, crab salad, egg bites with hummus, mozzarella cheese, ground turkey, all handled well. My fluids are at about 55oz to 60z but it gets hard, its easier to meet protein with a 30g shake for snacks otherwise I fall at 50g Today have not been hungry since breakfast, but having shakes throughout the day.     December surgery

    November 2022 surgery support!

    I'll be a month PO on Sunday and have only just stopped having incision pain in the last day or so -- I didn't take tylenol this morning for the first time in weeks! Had a lot more luck with my water once I switched to a straw cup (my doctor's office confirmed yesterday that they think the literature recommended against straws is outdated) and meeting my protein goals when I started making my own protein shake in the morning with unflavored powder, fairlife milk, and PB2 -- it doesn't really taste like anything, but after all the super sweet protein shakes I had the first few weeks that's exactly what I want.

    November 2022 surgery support!

    How’s everyone doing? I have much more strength & energy. One incision is still very painful when I move certain ways. Like a searing heat through the stomach. Yikes! Other than that I’m doing well tolerating my puréed/mushed food & getting all fluids. I do need to focus more on water though. I do better when I carry around a cup of ice & slowly munch throughout the day. I’m 16 days post op & down 18lbs. My doctor was happy when he saw me at 1 week post op & I was down 10. Hope everyone else is doing very well also. What are y’all eating? I wish protein was available in pill form!
  16. my how times have changed. 3 years ago i would have avoided bread like the plague. nowadays not so much. i think I've had some sort of bread product every day for the past few weeks! case in point: toast, bacon, egg and some seasonings. + plus an espresso martini beforehand (not shown) would've been 450 cals is i ate it all, but since Mr. swiped half of it, i adjusted to 296 cals after this screenshot was taken.
  17. The gas pains have been the worst part of this for me. The gas is finally subsiding for the most part. I still get some pains in left shoulder area which i was told is a common area for the gas to settle, however the pain is less intense and is coming in longer intervals and lasting less time. Thank God! I am one week and one day post op. I was told not to take anything for it though and to walk it off, which does help.

    Water intake

    you may find that your go-to drinks will change over time. like you i found warm (well, more like HOT) water was much easier to to get down. i carried an insulated thermos around with me for a couple months. later, i used that same thermos to keep my drinks cold cuz i found i only wanted ICE COLD water. and then i only wanted plain sparkling water (the bubblier the better). and then it HAD to have a twist of lemon in it... p.s. it also took me about 2 weeks before i could meet my water goals.
  19. 6 weeks. When I went to soft foods, measuring every thing to 1/2 cup. 1/3 cup protein, 1/8 cup veggie and 1/8 cup carb. I'm filling more satiety of food and this new life. Found Jenni ground turkey taco seasoned, scrambled eggs with turkey sausage patties diced. I have a few puree meals still frozen as backup if my new food not agreeing with me. But this is also a noticeable hunger that hasn't been there for last 6 weeks.

    Not losing Weight

    @kelly jojo First few weeks, we are usually bloated. After surgery I gained over 10 lbs due to the IV. Your body is healing and adjusting. I was told not to take my weight too seriously until I was fully healed (6 to 8 weeks). Try to be patient and stick to your program. 3 lbs a week is actually good at your weight (10.5k calories less), that's 12 lbs in a month if continues at that rate. If losing 3 lbs a week is upsetting then beware of the infamous 3-week stall where you may not lose anything for a few weeks.

    Not losing Weight

    Feeling really discouraged. I had the vertical sleeve on 11-23 and I have only lost 6# in the first two weeks. I am only allowed to have protein drinks, cream of wheat and thin soup for another week. I have been getting my liquids in and about 45-60 grams of protein a day. I was 219 the day of the surgery. Has anyone lost so little the first two weeks and then had the weight start to come off? I am nervous I will be one of the few people that this doesn’t work for!

    November 2022 Surgery Buddies

    infection round two surgery 11/3 went to er 11/11 for infection that burst thought that it healed up- skin was skin colored, no heat, no hard knot under skin, white scar formed, area was concave.. until sunday….. became red, tender etc… got antibiotics on monday and took two doses; woke up this morning and saw my incision was breaking open subq with thin skin holding it back from bursting … went to my surgeons office and he was i. surgery but i tried to wait on him but it burst while waiting… (i luckily brought a tea towel and most of the infection was caught by it… soaked through and now in the trash). his nurse spent 30 mins cleaning and getting some of the yuck out then sent me to er where i got another ct with contrast, two rounds of antibiotics, potassium and fluids… sent home again and follow up later this week…. oh the joys that come with surgery

    33 mile ultra run complete

    Jake, that is so inspiring! I'm also 3.5 years out. While I'm "thin," I'm not fit, and I've decided that 2023 is the year I'm going to get to a gym to increase my core strength, stamina, and endurance. If you can run 33 miles, I can certainly drag myself to a gym several time a week. Thanks for posting!

    Nausea 8 Weeks Post-op

    Did you ever figure out what was causing your nausea? I'm 5 weeks out and having similar issues as you. I'm worried this is related to GERD or an ulcer. I'm not on a ppi, only pepcid because i had some negative reactions to nexium in the past. However, i've been on pepcid so long, its lost almost all of its effect. I've asked to try a different ppi and they don't want to try that but I think I'm having major issues from it. Hoping you nausea resolved but curious how long it might have taken and what you think the issue was. I also don't find zofran helpful. Thanks. Laura
  25. I've had a long history with weight problems. By the age of ''4'' I was already 68 pounds despite having the diet of the typical child. By the time I was 15 I was in the 180's and eating honestly no different from my peers. By 17 I had joined a teen fitness group and failed to lose any weight what-so-ever. I resorted to starvation about a year later and by 19 I was 150 pounds and subsisting on 500 calories per day, taking diet pills and using tea laxatives. This lead to a cardiac issue which lead me into an Anorexia treatment center by 20. I cleaned up my act and began a ''healthy eating journey'' but sadly for me that resulted in a slow creeping weight gain of about 7-8 pounds per year. Sometime in 2014 I had reached ''180'' again and decided to join a gym. Worked out for months and lost nothing. I reduced my sugars, cut out processed food.. somehow I ended up weighing even more. I was 186 by the end of that year. By 2021 I was ''210'' pounds. My doctor weighed me. I was in shock. Literal shock.. could not even believe it because I was working with a nutritionist at the time and following through with everything. This last year I have worked out constantly, eaten no carbs and I am 208. I have only lost two pounds. I am nearly 33 year old and my weight has been a seemingly life long struggle and close to resistant to change unless extreme measures were taken (Anorexia). I am very disappointed with this. I have been tested for PCOS, Cushing's, NCCH etc many times and nothing showed up. I had severe acne (took accutane three times) and mild hirsutism as well but all blood tests come back normal, ultrasound reveal no cysts and I've gotten a monthly period since 13 years old. No doctor can explain this. I feel as though they do NOT believe me when I tell them what I eat. I just had an appointment with an endocrinologist and he said what I was telling him was ''impossible''. I have asked my doctor to refer me for weight loss surgery but at 210 pounds and 5'7 they just won't do it. I am at a loss.
