My surgeon said 65% excess weight would be lost if you do nothing. No exercise. So, I exercise my ass off. I work out 5 times per week. I push myself out of my comfort zone routinely. I hired a trainer, I do spin classes, I do yoga, I go hiking, I am constantly looking for ways to sweat. I added in several athletic performance supplements to my diet. I also follow an extremely strict diet; much more strict than is "necessary" for bariatric patients. However, I also get sick VERY easily so it's a mixture of me purposely being strict and me just getting really ill from basic foods. I do not eat complex carbs at all. I do not eat sugars (except naturally occurring). I do not really eat any fruit. I buy everything reduced fat, low sugar. I eat well under 40g of carbs a day and always hit at least 90g of protein. I typically stick to BariatricPal Lite Entrees for lunch during the work week. I eat the same thing almost every day of the work weeks. Yogurt, jerky stick, BP meal, light snack, cottage cheese or turkey patty. I take a ton of vitamins - about 15 different ones. I convince myself that if eat the wrong foods it will cause dumping so I never even put it in my mouth to try it. And it probably will cause dumping for me because virtually everything makes me ill. I consider this a positive, however. I look at food as a chore necessary to live now. I was never given a goal weight. I arbitrarily picked mine. I compared myself big time to others in the beginning; it was really depressing. Once you FEEL good... you're there. -

pre packed meals snacks breads
lisabaxter62 posted a topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Hi, I'm a long way off from eating solid foods but I am curious about the bariatric websites pre packaged foods, high protein snacks and desserts and breads/bagels. Have any of you tried them and is it even possible at some point to eat a bagel or a pre packaged meal after gastric bypass? -
Gastric Sleeve after 50 (Senior Sleevers)
Healthy_life2 replied to Lainie-lou's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
All surgeons’ instructions are different. I have some questions on your real food stage plan. What is your calories intake at this point? ¼ cup of food per meal and how many meals are you eating? Did your dietician set a calorie, carbohydrate, fats goal? do you log in a food app? Besides protein what other items are you allowed on your plan? Real food stage. Have you added in veggies and fruit? Some bariatric recipe sites for food ideas. (make sure they fit your plan) https://bariatricmealprep.com/the-ultimate-bariatric-resource-guide/ -
Losing weight Post Op ........
Healthy_life2 replied to Lovin2lose's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
Congratulations on your weight loss. You have done phenomenal. Is there a reason you feel you need to lose 100+ pounds? You can lose weight years out. Keep things realistic and long term sustainable. Make short term goals of five-pound increments. Give yourself a year of being consistent on your plan and make a goal of living and eating healthy. A healthy lifestyle should not be diet hell. I’m five years out. Weight loss is slow. My surgery restriction is less. I can hold more food volume (My stomach is not back to full size) I have had to find ways to fill the extra stomach space, keep hunger at a minimum and stay within my weight loss calories and macros. Sorry for the long response. Get some advice for your dietician first. I’m no expert. All I can offer is what works for me. You may have to tweak things to find your own weight loss mojo. Basics: Follow your plan, Log and weight your food, hydrate, drink 30 mins after you eat, exreccise/activity. The only reason we gain weight is eating over your weight loss/maintaining calories and macros. Ask your dietician for meal plan or research one you feel you will stick with. (Bariatric basics, keto, intermittent fasting, whole 30, paleo, low carb, vegan. The list goes on) Whatever meal plan you decide to follow log your food. (myfitnespal) or another food log app. Do you know what calories your body loses weight at? We are all different. Sometimes the numbers change years out. Using myfitnesspal app - Start with 1200 calories. You can dial your calories up or down by 100 to find the zone that works for your body. Set your protein, carbohydrates, and fats goals to fit the diet plan you choose. If you need help, ask. Real sugar, processed food and extra carbs cause craving and hunger. Detox off them. Get temptation out of the house – go shopping for things on your plan – Research some bariatric recipes to keep food flavorful. A few links Keep healthy options for sweet and salty cravings on hand. With your protein and other items allowed on your plan eat as much veggies until full to fill the extra sleeve space. The veggies will help keep your calories low. Depending on your plan use plant based or low glycemic carbs (sweet potato, brown rice, whole wheat) Stay within your carbohydrate goal. Low glycemic keeps your blood sugar from spiking. And add me to Lipona Lane! I asked my ortho ( because I darken HIs Door most often) told me what it was, I confess it was just a blob at first to me, consulted a general SURGERY person, broad nearly yawned in my face " You can walk around with THAT. the rest of your life not going to hurt You None!" pafooey, IT DISTRESSES ME TO LOOK At It! That was at least 6 months ago, now the blob on the left upper arm is encroaching over onto my antcubital vein and I have one starting in about the same place on the right inner elbow and a biggish one has developed over the bottom of my right arm scar where my humeral fracture was surgically repaired. Well one of my favorite cable shows is "Dr Pimple-popper" she's a Dermatologist so got referall to local one. Also a big fat mistake, first she told me not to be concerned about the big dark spots over my now prominent cheekbones, the family legends were true after all, I do have some Native American blood in my American Mongrel mix, only explanation I can come up with . I now look like serveral paternal cousins, just a different color pallet! She told me to be grateful as fair as I am, I don't have Skin Cancer. Shoot I never thought Cancer, I wanted something to eradicate or at least fade these marks, had people who would like to mind my business tell me they look like healing bruises. Then we got to my lipomas, each look like halved 🎾 balls, told me " Why don't you ask a General Surgeon? " Who the flying Whoopie- Doopies does She Think sent me to her? It was thoroughly useless waste of my time, but I see on my after- visit she billed my insurance like she actually repaired these things! Enough Gall to be divided in 3 parts, I'm thinking! So when I go for my Bariatric today, I will ask if there is a Surgical someone at Martha Morehouse Pavillion I could at least speak with, even if it is largely cosmetic , looking at them distresses me, Lost all this weight to look blobby and lumpy? Sob Sob, it ain't FAIR😪😥

SEPTEMBER 2018 SURGERIES AND SUCCESS
Frustr8 replied to Frustr8's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Well off to my Bariatric Clinic today for what passes as my 1 Year visit ---'even if I am 11 months 9 days only--Will see how things go- this one is with Maggie a Nurse Practitioner I have NEVER MET. Probably will never see Dr Needleman again unless I require more surgery- I seem to relegated to the "2 ships passing in the Night" status now. How nice I act today depends on their attitude more than mine; I tend to being sweet and compliant as long as Nobody Screws Me Over! Then instead of watching Karma working them over I become Karma myself, retaliate, and not to brag, but I CAN BE FEARSOME if necessary. Pray for me Today🙏and if they get my " Irish" up, for truly I have strawberry blonde verging on RED hair, Pray for Them, for they may just NEED it. ❤The Bumper Sticker that says "Kill all Your Enemies if necessary, it's up then to GOD to determine where they should be Filed" And Chekhov in in Star Trek said it, at least I'll give him first credit for the line FOOL ME ONCE, SHAME ON YOU FOOL ME TWICE, SHAME ON ME. Have a smooth, blessed Day one and all-- And I'll catch you one the Flip Side!😛✊😛 -

Any Chattanooga Sleevers out there?
Chattanoogagirl posted a topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I just had my bariatric seminar lastnight, & I asked the question that if you have f2 NASH (non alcoholic steatohepatitis), and the BMI is NOT 35 or above, pre diabetes, high blood cholesterol, high BP, am are you still qualified for surgery? I was told yes. -
Duodenal Switch with heart failure
Thunder Chicken replied to Thunder Chicken's topic in Duodenal Switch Surgery Forum
So the Dr who recommended surgery is a Heart transplant dr at the heart failure clinic. He didn’t specify which bariatric surgery, though. -
The BariatricPal Store carries the Premium Abdominal Binder for Bariatric and Plastic Surgery by DeRoyal at https://store.bariatricpal.com/products/premium-abdominal-binder-for-bariatric-and-plastic-surgery-by-deroyal. I personally didn't use one after either of my weight loss surgeries but patients tell me that it makes a HUGE difference. I used one after RNY reversal since that was an open procedure and I don't think I could have managed without it.

I am 40 years old and have been diagnosed with chronic heart failure. My cardiologist recommended bariatric surgery because of my bmi and co morbid conditions. I have already met with the surgeon at the University of Utah where I get most of my medical care but my insurance will pay me $500 to have it done elsewhere. I have now been through the beginning portions of the weight loss program at a different hospital and have my "pre op" appointment on August 26th. I hadn't considered the duodenal switch because the university doesn't offer it but the new hospital does. After all of my research, I feel relatively confident that this is the most appropriate choice for me. However, I can't find much information on the best surgery for CHF patients(if there is a difference). Most people with CHF don't seem to be able to have surgery because of the risks, primarily of anesthesia. I have had 11 surgeries including 1 in October. I don't see this as being an issue for me and the cardiologist is the one who recommended the surgery. Has anyone dealt with this?

Anxiety and head hunger are killing me
Cherylmilla replied to KT1981's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I don't know where you live, but where I am, CBD is a big thing. It's supposed to be wonderful for anxiety and more natural than xanax, etc. (though I take the xanax myself). I'm considering looking into CBD for my anxiety. I'm awaiting my surgery (I don't even have a date yet), so I can't relate to the head hunger just yet. I have been going to bariatric support groups, and they suggest keeping your hands busy, walking and all of that. Or a rewards system that doesn't include food (i.e., you didn't snack, give your self a marble and once the jar is full, you can buy the shoes you've been eyeing). -
It didn't affect anything for me and at the time it was in season. My Bariatric team didn't agree with the keto and wanted us to have veggies and fruits in our diets, they said keto would mess with our metabolism later on when we did eat those things later. Everyone has different views I chose to go with the Drs. and nutritionist for my plan.

She said it doesn't have as much protein as it claim to have in it. And these are better for bariatric patients. Sent from my SM-G925T using BariatricPal mobile app

Finally under 250! It's been slower than some people but it's happening. I have a suspected ulcer. My bariatric clinic wants me to be sedated for a scope which I don't have anyone to drive me to the hospital for right now. I am taking medication and there has been an improvement. -
you actually can after bariatric surgery lol..

I'd love to hear this doctor's explanation as to why a sleeve is a good idea for someone with a GERD history. Pushing for a procedure contraindicated by a co-morbidity makes me suspicious about whether your best interests are being considered. It's sad that some doctors exploit patients to match their medical shortcomings. Run don't walk to another surgeon. What are your current doctor's qualifications exactly? Make sure you make an appointment with an experienced bariatric surgeon. (I'd make a recording of his/her explanation to play for the second doctor!)

Whose goal weight are you using? Your own or your program's?
AZhiker replied to Uterno's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Weight Watchers said my goal should be 133. I just wanted to get to a "normal, ideal" BMI and to see the scale below 150. In the old days, the balance scales had weights that moved up on the arm every 50 pounds. I did not want to move the weight to the 150 pound mark, so I set my goal at 149. My doc was fine with that. I want to actually go the 145 so I have some wiggle room. That is still perfectly within normal BMI for my height. I watched a video by a bariatric surgeon describing the total expected weight loss after WLS. Most people do not get to their "ideal" weight, but any significant weight loss still improves the over all health exponentially. He said that on one side of the bell curve are those who stick to the plan faithfully, record their meals, and exercise faithfully. Those are the ones who have the most sustained weight loss over time. On the other side are those who do not exercise and who cheat. They do not lose well and may regain all their their weight. In the middle are those who stay with the plan, but don't exercise, and those who may exercise, but are not real sticklers to the plan. Bottom line - "you get what you pay for", and "There aint so such thing as a free lunch." Some people will simply lose faster/slower and will lose more/less than others, not matter what they do. But the greatest overall, sustained success will go to those who are totally committed to the lifestyle change, embracing the new way of eating and learning to enjoy the exercise. It's all about reframing the thought process, developing a new relationship with food and how we move our bodies. -
So, I recently went to see Dr. Vadim Gritsus about getting the sleeve done. I currently have Horizon NJ Health through NJ Family Care (medicaid) but I'm being cut off at the end of the month because my income is now over the limit. NJ Family Care suggested purchasing insurance through the Marketplace. That being said, I'm wondering if anyone knows of an insurance plan offered through the marketplace that has a 3 month or less requirement process for bariatric surgery. I've considered quitting my job in order to keep the medicaid but its just too drastic and I'd rather do the right thing and purchase insurance (the insurance through my job doesn't cover bariatric surgery). My BMI is 41 and I've already been told I qualify.

In the meantime if you're still dry, dredge out the Biotene from your surgery supplies, you may turn out in September to no longer require it. I got the the SAD News mine is hereditary, intrinstic, and I am among the minority that weight loss and surgery DID NOT CURE- l8st obe- half of my puffy fluffy weight and Uncle Snuffely the C- pap and I will have a permanent relationship although my pressure settings have diminished and now Tomkitten, my son and the heir to my miniscule fortune, has joined me on the C- pap road, 8 to 5 odds he will also be having Bariatric Surgery in the not to distant future. Doubt he will bebthrilked that I tell you HE now weighs 70 pounds more than ME, oh he carries IT WELL but he admitted " I will not wait until I get much older for My Surgery" and our Mutual PCP,is very Gung-Ho about him seeking it. Reminded TK our local community hospital is. phasing in a program. Bullfeathers, said TK, I WILL GO TO Columbus and Ohio State University where Mom went. PCP can't disparage that, he was an Alumnus in 2000 of the Medical College there, even knew my Doctor Needleman personally, close to the Same Age. So TK. & I. go skipping down the same Road👸&👨Together!

that's WAY above average. Unless you're talking "My 600 lb Life" contestants, who start out at much higher BMI's than the average bariatric patient, an average range of loss for the first month is more like 15-25 lbs. I lost 16 lbs the first month, and I started out at over 300 lbs.
