    Gastric sleeve in Turkey

Hi My mother nearly died because of botched surgery at Erdem hospital in Turkey so I want to try & help as many people as I can to NOT go here. On 26th January my mum went for gastric sleeve surgery, gallstone removel & oesophagus repair which was performed by doctor Ali Solmaz. She returned home 1 week later & within 10 days was admitted to a special care unit in hospital unable to keep fluid, food & her own saliva down she was tube feed until the doctors found out what happened. After investigating they discovered all surgeries were botched. After 3 months of being fed via a tube she received corrective surgery last week. I contacted Erdem to inform them & they offered free surgery to fix their mistake but mum was on her death bed and unable to travel. We are from Northern Ireland & mum was in an intensive care unit so travel was out of the question. I asked them for a refund as now mum has been out of work and it has put financial pressure on all the family & they said no and said she signed a form & it’s not their problem anymore. I told them I intend to inform anyone wanting surgery of what has happened & they said “do what you want” their words. I have messages of all correspondence with Erdem which clearly displays their lack of customer service and empathy for how they left my mother. They monitor their Facebook pages & will not let any negative comments be posted so that me or anyone else cannot make anyone aware of how horrific they have treated us. My mum thought she would be fine, she wasn’t. It could happen you. Please please take my advice. Go somewhere else, not Erdem hospital in a Turkey.

    Cancer Weight Gain

First of all, you still look great--I can't see much of a difference between April 2018 and December 2019. However, the more important issue is your health. I'm sure that cancer had a huge physical and emotional impact on you, and right now you should focus on your recovery from cancer more than on your weight issues. (I say this as a cancer survivor myself.) You can deal with your weight once you are clearly on the other side of the cancer. Please don't beat yourself up about your relatively small weight gain. You have been through a lot!
  3. Hey everyone! I'm looking for advice and encouragement. I had my weight loss surgery in December 2016, so I'm 3.5 years out now. I dropped around 160 pounds, from my biggest being 360 and my smallest being 187. I was so blessed to lose so much in about 14 months. Maintenance was relatively easy at first. I purposefully gained 15 pounds because being 6'2 with a large build, 187 started getting me questions about being sick. 200-205 is my personal goal and sweet spot, where I feel the best and think I look the best. Fast forward to September 2019. I was having my first endoscopy since my surgery, as a follows up to Barrett's esophagus that was found when I had my bypass. What I thought would be routine, turned worst case scenario when I was diagnosed with esophageal cancer. Apparently I'm in that 2% that has Barrett's that actually progresses to cancer. Luckily we caught it very early stage and I have been able to have ablation therapy treatment versus the typical chemo and radiation. I've developed recurrent esophageal stricture due to scar tissue from ablation therapy, causing me to choke frequently. Needless to say, it's all been very scary, and my eating got out of whack for a while. I've quickly gained weight and I'm at 220.2 today. I need to lose 20 pounds ASAP. The current COVID-19 situation and working from home, having access to food 24/7 coupled with stress eating is proving difficult to overcome. I thought I'd post here to see if anyone has words of encouragement or advice to help me get back on track quickly. 3.5 years and I was very proud to be maintaining at my goal weight of around 200, and now I'm scared the scale will continue to creep up on me.
  4. I am 5mths out and wish I had known about the constant diarrhea, I have lost all desire for sweets and also I was lactose intolerant prior but even more so now! I wait 30 min to drink after meals and sometimes longer but everything goes right through me! I am 10 pounds shy my goal weight and love the new me but also feel I am constantly showering and more cautious of hygiene! As they say,"Never trust a poot!"

    Concussion/weigh gain/weight loss pills

Hi. My Drs had me on Victoza before weight loss surgery. My experience was really good. I used it to completely stop ALL sweetened beverages and that was a big success. The victoza decreased my appetite and totally got rid of my sweet tooth. Then 6 months later I had gastric sleeve. I lost 10 lbs on the Victoza. Before I started Victoza I was 260. I lost the 10lbs. Now I’m 9 weeks out from gastric sleeve and I was 197 this morning. So, 60 pounds total weight.
  6. So I am down to 147 as of today. I am 10 weeks post op and feel amazing. I actually feel normal again.

    Slow losers club

Hey there my sleeve was also 8/14/19 ! I’m a slow loser also and I feel like I barely get in enough water , exercise or protein. I was 272 , I’m down to 210 and very disappointed. I get sick and nauseous from a lot of foods . I’m not eating sweets or sodas . I haven’t been feeling well and my blood glucose has been low ( I’m not diabetic that I know of ) I need a exercise plan I was walking and trying some weights I can barely get the strength to walk at all now . Good luck to you !

Before Gastric Sleeve Surgery. Surgery not scheduled yet due to COVID 19. Hopefully in July or August 2020. I am nervous but ready.
  9. Hi Kris, There has been no specific check of my gall bladder unless that is included in the barrage of blood tests that were done 6 months post surgery. This explains what it is https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6132784/ Here in Perth approximately half the surgeons are doing it. It isn't the "Lapband" There is no erosion or the like. I'm just sick of the shoulder pain. Will ask the surgeon if there are any tests other than the endoscopy to determine what is causing it. I eat slowly and always keep to the cup limit. The pain is getting duller over time but always when I eat. Thanks Riva I will try the hot water thing. Pretty much all the hospitals are closed here just in case of a Convid 19 outbreak though 'elective' procedures and tests etc are starting to come back as we get close to zero new cases each day. Regards, Paul

1.5 years out & still throwing up?

I am right there too! I'm 18 months post vsg and seriously any time I eat meat outside of rotisserie chicken, or really soft chicken like thighs, I seriously can't keep it down. I know I need to aim for liquids for just a few days to let it all settle. It's awful. It's usually not like regular throw up, but a gross slime that fills up my entire esophagus trying to move the food. Beef is the absolute worst and my absolute favorite. It's a struggle. I will have to go back to eating smaller bites, chewing more, and probably avoiding beef, pork, and dry chicken. I doubt I have a crazy kink or anything like that, but I'm struggling for sure. I regained 10 lbs since Christmas, but am working to get it back off. I lost 175 pounds since I started pre-op, but then gained that tad bit back. I'm also trying to not eat like a bariatric patient for the rest of my life. I don't want to gorge myself, but eating 1000 calories forever isn't realistic, especially for someone who is 248, 5'9" and does Crossfit 3-4 days a week. I've brought protein shakes back into my diet 2x a day to help get my protein back in. But things like clam chowder, meatless chili, lentils with curry... those are the best things that I've found I can handle. Solids just suck.

    Lower BMI - Skin/recovery

Hey.... Happy for you that your insurance will cover. Just an FYI: If you want to really make sure, gain 10 and that would put you at a 40BMI and you are a shoo-in. I did and would do it again and again and again. Back in 2009 i was at 223lbs... which put me at a 40 bmi but no co morbidities. So just to be on the safe side i put on 10. Approved in 3 days. Gain 10 to lose 89, yep yep. 5'2" began at 232. I was banded. Weightloss was slow and i hated that... then i realized that losing it slow was really a blessing. I has no problems with my arms, leg, but and even my boobs (44G). My problem was my stomach. I had 2 sections, hysterectomy, gallbladder at the time. Then the LB. My boobs went to a 36H. and so this is where i stayed for years..... at 143#. In 2012 i had a TT with MR and lipo on flanks. Then i lost my band due to a slip in 2017 and in 2.5 years i gained 30lbs. Hit menopause and everything went to crap. No matter what i did. So this past Aug. at 173.5lbs i had the sleeve done. I've lost weight pretty fast. I can see the sagging now in my arms and butt.... and i lost a couple of cups in the boobs.... now a 32FF. I say losing weight slowly worked i better for me the first time...... I am smaller than i was at my lowest with the band.... 143..... Today i weight 128
  13. Feeling pretty excited today! I've still been losing weight but more slowly. And fit into a pair of size 30 (size 10) jeans last week that one of my friends gave me! I got rid of all my "skinny" size 10 clothes years ago, so I immediately ordered a couple more pairs of size 10 capris/ankle jeans since the smallest I have are size 12s. It's funny how I still didn't really believe I'm a size 10 now, I was convinced it was a fluke and the new jeans I ordered would not fit. But they did! 😁 Today was a scale victory day. The lowest I've been since surgery was 180.4 (on my one year surgiversary) and then I gained a little back. I feel like getting lower than 180 was scary to me because I still worry about keeping the weight off. Today the scale said 179.2! 😀 I'm feeling less worried about getting smaller and keeping the weight off. It is easier to lose for me since surgery than before, where I'd have to kill myself to lose weight. I did maintain the 180ish for a good amount of time so I just need to get to my goal and then focus on maintaining again. I don't think I've ever worn a size 8 in my life, but I think that's my goal. We'll see when I get there. 😉 Hoping to reach goal by my two year surgiversary on July 2nd.

    Low Blood Pressure

Low blood pressure has become a way of life for me. I always have to get up slowly (10 secs or so) or Im on the floor. I think this is from dropping weight so quickly and hope it will get better when my body gets more used to the change over a period of time. Ill keep you posted.
  15. LOL, I only realized that I needed a new bra size after this crazy COVID-19 pandemic. Don't get me wrong I wen down more than one bra size, but I truly thought that I was done once I hit 40 D. Several weeks ago, Walmart employees thought I was nutz asking if they still carried 18 hour bras. I couldn't find them... until 30 minutes or so later, I did and they did not have whatever size I probably am now. I was able to find a 38 C which is a little too big, but whats a girl to do. I can't stand not wearing a bra, I hate how it feels. As the character Karen Walker, from Will and Grace might say with her fists balled up to the sky, "Oh, the boobyness of it all" or "Oh, the my boobs look like I am a crappy ironer of it all"! I dunno, for anyone that watches Will and Grace what might their character's say? They are all hilarious to me, but I think that Jack and Karen might be my favorite! LOL, man the fact that I can still laugh with a 5 year old child, 12 year old child, a dog, a cat is home all while I am a full time student and I have to work from home at the moment. OMGoodness, they argue and eat so much. Yikes! Especially being in these crazy, unknown times...Laugter, Please, give me more laughter!
  16. Still great though ! Proud of you ! I took so much longer to recover.i was sleeved 11/15/19 and I'm down 43 pounds. It's been slow . But your loss is amazing ! Congrats on the sleeve!! [emoji126] Sent from my moto g(7) supra using BariatricPal mobile app
  17. We have very similar stats - my surgery was on March 11th. I was 204 on the day of surgery - lost 19 lbs since then. It's really slowed down after the first few weeks - I've also only lost 3 lbs over the past two weeks. On the other hand, this is the lowest weight I've been in a decade. 6 more lbs, and I'll be the lowest weight of my adult life. And last time I was at this weight, I was STARVING all the time. Right now, I have to remind myself to eat most days. So I'm feeling pretty confident that the weight loss will continue. Even at a lb a week, I'd reach a normal weight by 2021. That would have been impossible before this surgery. This forum has been so helpful to maintaining my positive attitude. There are other slow losers here who are farther along in their journey - so you see it does work! As for the drinking, I did drink alcohol once since my surgery. However, I will try not to do that again for a while. I'm less worried about calories or slowing my weight loss than other issues. As NovaLuna says, bariatric surgery definitely changes how you process alcohol - I could tell this from my try. And studies show increased risks of addiction and alcohol related death or health problems after bariatric surgery. I had some issues with alcohol in my 20s, and I don't want to trade one problem for another. But please don't beat yourself up about it! That won't help. It's a really tough time right now for most people. Taking it day by day and doing our best is all we can do.
  18. Hey everyone! So as of this morning I reached my first goal to get in the 180’s. I’m super excited but when I did the math it literally took me two weeks to lose 3 lbs. Since surgery I’ve only lost 17bs and I think I may be doing something wrong. To be honest I’ve been drinking red wine in the evenings, like 2 glasses every couple days. I feel guilty but quarantined with my 14 and 10 year old and working from home is getting to me. Would the drinking have that large of an effect? Based on you guys past experience is this average for someone starting with a 38 BMI. Just looking for some encouragement or a swift kick in the butt.
  19. Ugh, I fainted this morning on my way out of bed. This happens about every six months. I had low blood pressure 82/49 and my pulse was 64. I have half the symptoms of hypotension: dizziness, fainting, fatigue, and problems concentrating. From the studies I read Gastric Sleeve can cause low blood pressure and it's really not an issue UNLESS you have issues like fainting. My blood pressure has always been on the low side, but not this low. A normal pulse range is 60 to 100 beats per minute. If you're sedentary most of the day, like me during the pandemic, your RHR likely approaches or exceeds the top end of this range. Well, mine's at rock bottom. My PCP and surgeon both work in the hospital where they are treating COVID-19 patients and I am not comfortable going there. Fortunately, I can message either of them, which I'll do. OK, here's the question. Has this happened to anyone else? What did you do? Did anything help?

10 Months and still full restricted eat very little
  22. Hey! I’m new here. Stats first. Starting weight :270 height: 5” 4” Surgery date: July 18 2019. Current weight: 177. Goal weight: 145 I know that by now I should be getting the hang of this eating situation, now that I’m 9 months post op. I just can’t seem to get control over my eating. To make matters complicated, no matter what in the world I’ve been eating, I’ve been losing weight nicely and have no complications whatsoever. I really have no motivation to eat ‘healthy’. The reason I did this surgery was to become HEALTHY, not to lose weight while stuffing my face with whatever I want.. I’m confused. To what extent to I need to “diet” if I’m mal-absorbent? My bloods are fine. I’m on top of my vitamins. I work out every day. Should I be concerned about my eating? Do I have to watch strictly or eat only healthy? Because at this point it doesn’t seem to be making a difference. Sure, if I eat oily foods I have bathroom issues. But weight wise my eating seems to do nothing.

    First (tele)visit tomorrow

Hi!!! I’m so exited for you all. I had my first appointment In July 2019. My insurance requirements are 4 months of monitoring. Long story short, my surgery is May 6th, insurance is covering it. There’s been ups and downs along the way. It’s taken longer then I thought it would. Don’t get Discouraged, be your own advocate and know where your at in the process. My doctors office dropped the ball after Christmas and that’s why it’s taken so long.

READY TO THROW IN THE TOWEL

You’re welcome. I was 100% convinced I was going to be one of those people that dropped weight quickly. 6 months post surgery I was at my wits end (February 2019), I think I lost 2 pounds that month and I was so frustrated. I joined a gym in March and it really helped me mentally and physically. I did have many pity parties along the way, mostly whining to my husband lol. I refused to fail at this, it was harder than I thought it was going to be. In hindsight, I’m glad I lost it slowly. I don’t take one pound for granted. It also helped prepare me for my current life. I have to watch what I eat and chart everything because I gain very easily. I prefer this to being overweight. Keep going, you won’t regret it.
