  2. Have you ever bought one of those already seasoned and ready to roast birds from the grocery store? Or better yet, one of the already roasted birds? I highly recommend starting this three-part series that way, depending on your personal confidence levels. You absolutely could roast your own chicken, and for those willing to do so, please feel free. I did, but there's no shame in letting someone else do the work. For the purposes of this series, it doesn't matter how you ended up with a "frame" of a chicken, meat removed and leftovers stored for future consumption. We'll use that lovely meat tomorrow. Now, you could be wasteful and throw away that frame of bones, but you're foregoing a very tasty opportunity for two more meals from those bones and tattered remains. You see, those bones contain a very essential ingredient called collagen. It's a thickener for soups! You know it. You've seen that disgusting jelled substance on cooled plates just before you threw it out with the garbage. That was the collagen. You have on that counter the ability to make your own "Condensed Cream of" soups for your recipes. Incidentally, you eliminate quite a bit of the excess carbs, calories, preservatives and sodium. How do you know when you've cooked out all the collagen from the bones? They'll practically crumble when you try to break them. The fact that you can break a leg bone all by yourself is a clue you've gotten all the condensing collagen out. Remember, you can use the frame in place of the bony meat in the recipe. Here's the recipe: Tomorrow, I'll post the recipe for using that chicken meat. It's mushy enough for Chicken Salad! Remember! This is the basis for many recipes. Freeze it in about 10 ounce increments. You should end up with about 4 containers. Double the batch if you like, and add el cheapo chicken wings if you just need broth. See you tomorrow!
  3. Let's see. My name is Amanda. I have been married for 8 1/2 years, and during that time we have had 4 wonderful kids! My hubby is a pastor, and I stay at home with the babies. I first realized that I had a weight problem when I was about 11 years old. Since then I have pretty much been preoccupied with what size I was. As you know this is rather stressful, and what is my favorite thing when I am stressed? Yeah, chocolate! Oh who are we kidding it doesn't have to be chocolate, any food that's full of salt, sugar, or (and) fat will do:laugh:! Seriously though, it is time that I do something. I have tried every diet under the sun, including chewing for the flavor and then spitting the food out:thumbdown:(it didn't work to well!). I lose weight during most of my diet tries, but then my hunger takes over and I fail and gain, gain, gain. I have been following these posts but not really saying anything for about a year and a half, and now I really think this is the right choice for me. I go for the imformation seminar on 10-21-08 and I am so excited. I hope my insurance accepts me as I will definitely not be able to self pay, but I am handing this to the Lord. If it is His will for me to have this surgery He will pave the way. If any of you have BCBS of North Carolina, did it go well with you? Anyway, I am so excited! I am ready to start my new life!

Body Lift ! Told My Trainer

Thanks so much for your answer, I have my pre-op Tuesday so a bit nervous. It seems you did great, and that is quite an accomplishment from a 24 to an 8! I am surprised you went from a 14 to an 8 after the surgery this is really great! I have been struggling with getting these last few pounds off, it seems to get the scale to move now I have to eat only Protein and water! I was down a bit more and it seems the only area that got smaller is the part they are going to take off with the surgery, Currently I am around 237, my goal is 225. The surgeon says that their is about 10 lbs of Skin and Fat to be taken off so that should put me just around goal. Would have like to have gotten their before but that's not going to happen and at this point I think I am ready to take the plunge. Would love to hear more about your recovery and your current wt/bmi etc. Take Care ROSS

Progressing To The Next Food Phase - What To Expect?

I guess each doctor has his or hers own sch I had my surgery 10 weeks ago but i only had to stay on liquid diet for 2 weeks then puree diet but even then it was only the meats that i had to puree Vegtables as long as fully cooked could be eaten as is. There are a number of diets for the sleeve surgery on the net. but I just ignored them and stayed with the one the dietian the doctor assigned me gave out now almost 11 weeks out and eating normal type food now i still have not touched carbs and the 60 lbs i lost have given me complete freedom form insulin (YEA) still today my tummy feels tight as i eat but it also tells me ok that enough Just listen to that tight feeling and stop
  6. Congrats on your upcoming surgery date! 1. How long did your surgery last on average? under 2 hours - Oh I was an outpatient too, so I went home that day and got to sleep in my own bed - YEAH 2. How long did it take you to wake up from the anesthesia? I was awake within one hour of coming out, but not ready to go home since I had a lot of nausea. 3. I know everyone is different but on a scale of 1-10 how much pain did you feel once you woke up? Um, is 10 high pain and 1 no pain? I felt no pain - none. But I have a lot of buddies in SoCal group who felt a lot of pain. Don't think of me as wonderwoman, I avoid pain at all costs. 4. How soon do they have you start walking around once you wake up? As soon as you can - within an hour after waking up. I was not attached to any pain meds or pain pumps or catheder or drain or heart monitor or etc. They wanted me moving right away. I was just another normal girl, minus most of my stomach. The nausea was bad though. 5. If there are any ladies out there who had PCOS, did it go away or improve with time after surgery? n/a i have so many more, if you have any other info other than what i asked...its welcome! Ask away - that is what we are here for to share and cheerlead each other onto success. Remember we are all different, with different surgeons using different methods & tools. Hugs!
  7. Have to be up at four take a shower check into hospital at 5 am surgery at 7:30. I choose to be alone for the wait because when I'm nervous I get cranky. I've lost 18 pounds for the surgery but I don't think that's enough. I'm done to 369.8 from 388 which is my highest. I'm very scared and I decided not to tell anyone but my parents and partner what I'm doing. I hope all goes well!
  8. I am 3 weeks out today. I went back to work 10 days post-op. I'm a teacher. I'm usually tired after work. I do get in all my proteins, vitamins, and liquids. I can bend over slowly. Sometimes my incisions still ache. I would say it depend on your healing process, everyone is different. I know personally I have no energy after work and can't bend easily, so an easy routine might be doable.

    Digestive Nightmare

For me I get very fatigued. Think back to day three postop. Been feeling run down like that for a while now. Also I can't grip things with my left hand. I don't have the muscle coordination to hold things. My left leg is weak, unbalanced, wobbly, and numb. Feels like I have a few 10lb weights strapped too tightly to my leg. Then there is cognitive. I fumble for words, mispronounce words, constantly lose my train of thought, and for extra fun add a handful of anxiety. 10 years after dx and I think I'm doing pretty good. Just noticing I'm not bouncing back from episodes to 100%.
  12. My surgery has been scheduled for Jun 8th. I must admit that after years of wishing for this I am a bit nervous. My question is this. If you could change anythingyou did or didn't do to prepare for you surgery, what would it be?
  13. Hi, Can you elaborate a little on a few of your points? You said sometimes the sleeve is not the best surgery for someone with metabolism issues and that a different surgery may be more appropriate... why and which one? I have been very concerned about this issue. I lost 160lbs 10 years ago on low carb ( I was still overweight -- size 14/16) and managed to keep the majority of it off. I've gained about 60-70 pounds over the last 5 years even though I still adhered to a low carb diet ( just maybe not as strict). Ok, so I'm thinking that maybe my body is immune to the low carb at this point so I tried Weight Watchers.... I GAINED WEIGHT ON WW. That is how I ended up here. I felt surgery was my only hope.... Let me add that I had Thyroid Cancer and my thyroid was removed, but I take Synthroid so that should not be the issue. I also have Multiple Sclerosis but cannot think of any reason MS would affect weight loss. You also said that if you only had 1 protein shake in the morning and 1 protein bar at lunch you would faint... But isn't that close to what we're supposed to be doing. Lets say a protein shake has 200 calories, so far so good right? A protein bar has 200 calories. So we're at 400 calories before dinner. My impression was that staying around 600-800 calories is optimal to keep losing? Help! Now I'm concerned that I will be failure at this!!

Day 1 of my preop diet......

It's a lot easier now than it was the first few days, but I'm over it. Ready to get this done. Surgery is on Tuesday at noon, and it can't come soon enough. As for how I'm feeling, I'm doing pretty good, just a little tired from the lack of calories. Also peeing constantly. I've lost around 8 pounds over the last 10 days.
  18. Good evening all my fellow sleevers, and sleevers to be... I have been reading a lot of the posts on this site, and although there are many people here that offer positive reinforcement to others, I see much, much more of the self negativity. If you stop and think for just a second, who is your biggest cheerleader? Who is your biggest fan? YOU ARE!!! Too many people speak too much negativity into their own spirits about what they can't do or think they can't do. My mother (God rest her soul) always said to me, "Don't tell me what you can't do, tell me what you CAN do". All of us have very difficult struggles ahead of ourselves, whether you are pre or post op. We MUST starting speaking more positivity to ourselves. We need to tell ourselves, "Yes I'm going to make it through the next 2 weeks of a liquid only diet". "Yes, I'm going to walk for at least 10 minutes everyday". Everything you say to yourself should start with, "I can or I will". ONLY POSITIVE AFFIRMATIONS!! If you tell yourself, you can't, you won't, or even I don't know, its not going to happen because you're beginning with a defeatist attitude. Speak positivity to yourself, say it out loud so your brain and your subconscious hear you claim the positive affirmation. You will be shocked when you realize how strong you really are, but you've always started the race 2 paces behind the pack because you started doubting yourself before you even got started. Start building your "new self esteem" NOW! You won't have time later on because you'll be too busy LOOKIN' GOOD!!! You CAN, You WILL, I CAN, I WILL... Let these words be your mantra. Just remember fear and self doubt bring failure and disappointment. We have all experienced too much of those in our lives already. Remember this... "Insanity" is doing the same thing over and over again, expecting a different result. Let's start today doing something different, expecting a POSITIVE result! Thank you for your gift of time!.... Michelle

    Running my first half/full marathon

I just did my first half yesterday. I had some oatmeal and 6 almonds before the race. During the race they will have Water stations and other types of electrolyte drinks for you. Then at the end of the race they had some oranges, banana's and bagels, kind bars, coconut water. When I was training I used one of the belts and would put Powerade zero in the two containers. I also use the Clif shot blocks when I run 10 or more miles. I have never done a full so I don't have any tips on that one. Good luck- LA
  20. I am a little bit nervous about the weight I gained after Thanksgiving holiday. I had my last weigh in on 11-19 and did not get approval until 12-11. I called the surgeons office and a rude receptionist told me that my surgeon was booked for the rest of the year. Well, I gained weight after my last real Thanksgiving and have not been able to get any of it off. My surgeon's office called me today to schedule my consultation for 12-17 and I am nervous about how the surgeon will feel about the weight gain. My insurance Anthem does not require weight loss for the surgery. I am freaking out! Should I really be worried about this since I have not yet started my pre op diet? Btw, my surgery is on 12-28.
  21. Hi, I will be seeing a bariatric surgeon this week. I've always been at least 10 or 15 pounds overweight. But I am now at least 70 pounds over ideal weight. I thought it was only going through treatment for colon cancer, that caused me excessive weight gain. The surgery and the chemo wore me out, the steroids I had to use to treat the chemo side effects also affected my weight and I was not making good food choices. My oncologist raised bariatric surgery as a possible treatment for the obesity. My primary care doctor is ok with the idea, she just wanted to make sure that I was mentally and physically prepared for another surgery. My BMI is about 36. That BMI level, plus having at least two competitors, high blood pressure and sleep apnea, will qualify me for insurance coverage. I've found some studies that suggest excess weight increases the risk of developing certain forms of cancer. But I've also seen a study that suggests that those who have had bariatric surgery have a greater likelihood of colon cancer after the surgery. Ann Surg. 2013 Dec;258(6):983-8, Increased risk of colorectal cancer after obesity surgery. I have records of my weight and I see that as far back as 2012 I was at least 60 pounds overweight. So this weight problem has been with me for awhile, both before and after cancer treatment. I've tried calorie restriction and exercise in the last few years but it hasn't helped. In the past I've used slimfast, Atkins, weight watchers, etc. They all worked, but I gained the weight back. I am an emotional eater. What will happen if I continue to eat based on emotions after I have bariatric surgery? I recognize that surgery will not cure the emotion based eating. I am considering either lap band or gastric sleeve. I would like to know anyone's experience with these surgeries. Were the side effects really difficult to deal with? How did you decide which surgery was better for you? Do you think that the reduction of the likelihood some cancers outweighs the potential increase in colon cancer likelihood? Finally, I am aware that bariatric surgery is not a quick fix or a cure all.

    Maintenance/Stop Losing

I wouldn't try too hard. The vast majority of us regain 10-20 lbs without trying in year 2 or 3, before our weight settles and stabilizes (unfortunately, some gain way more than that if they're not careful). Also, fat redistributes a bit and you start looking better, even if you don't gain or lose anything. My "ancient", drawn face gradually looked a bit fuller and healthier. I swore I wouldn't be one of "those" people who experienced a rebound, yet----here I am! (I bottomed out at 138 - now I bounce around in the 150s and have been here for c. three years).

  24. By day 9 or 10 post-op, all the discomfort I was feeling went away. It took a few more weeks before I could lay falt on the bed or lay on my side without feeling a pulling sensation inside. I think I was back to my normal self by the end of a month. The liquid pain meds I was given tasted so disgusting that I went without. My stomach was rolling and complaining all day, every day for that first 10 days. But everything quieted down after that.
