    Pouch Rest

I agree with @catwoman7 on all points and include one additional perspective on the "pouch reset". The "pouch reset" has little to do with the size of your pouch. There is little scientific evidence that it shrinks the size of a stretched pouch. The reset may temporarily shrink it but more importantly, it is a "mind reset." https://www.livingwithasleeve.com/pouch-reset/ So, as you say, you still feel as if you have restriction. It's just that you've returned to bad habits. If you choose to do the "pouch reset" use those days to break your bad habits. These resets are usually 4-6 days, some up to 10. Here's more info: https://www.obesitycoverage.com/the-pouch-reset-losing-weight-after-weight-regain/
  2. I found this, it explains how it supposedly works https://estetikland.com/en/weight-losing-with-stomach-botox/ ps it written by someone whose first language isn't English Effects of stomach Botox Botox is applied to stomach muscles and it is effective on smooth muscles of stomach. Muscles with Botox have decreased contraction capacity. For example, since contraction of stomach muscles that process food in 2-3 hours and discards this processed food in 4-4.5 hours slow down, this process can take up to 10-12 hours. With the help of injection to stomach part where hunger hormone ghrelin is segregated, level of this hormone is significantly decreased. This way, appetite of the patient can be decreased significantly and sense of fullness can be maintained for a long time.

    Pandemic Check In

I know this is a horrific time for so many people, and I grieve for them. But in most every other way, I'm personally enjoying this time tremendously, actually. I appreciate not being immersed in the turmoil of daily life, and finally having time to pursue many of the intellectual pursuits and interests that are meaningful to me but that I never could find the time to engage in. This is the sabbatical I’ve longed to have. I'm healthy and fit. I have an extremely active life of the mind, am skilled with being in relative solitude, am emotionally pretty experienced with managing change and disruption, and deeply fortunate about not having to be fearful about my career. Each day I learn more about myself, the needs of others, and do what I can from home, as well as delivering groceries each week for several family friends who are seniors. When I'm part of the world again, there will be additional opportunities to be a better friend and citizen. Prior to the lockdown I was training for a sprint triathlon and have continued to even though it was obviously cancelled, so am doing 10-12km per day of walk/run intervals, cycling 40km per week, and swimming 2km daily. I still do twice weekly weight training and 20km per week of indoor rowing or solo outdoor hill hiking, and am trying to do yoga a few times a week. Occasionally I throw in stretching, core exercises, or an online or dvd exercise class just to mix it up a bit. In terms of diet, I'm still not particularly interested in food per se, though I really enjoy preparing food and looking at it/eating it. My rate of weight loss hasn’t slowed, so the average loss of 12-14lbs per month seems to be continuing and likely will as long as I stay the course with current diet and exercise levels. For those who have lost a loved one, or their job or income, it's impossible to relax and enjoy the free time. A sustaining hope for me is that a more equitable and humane society might emerge from this struggle. A guaranteed national income here at home so that everyone has food and shelter, additional wealth taxes, a greener economy, and stronger national public service (and for Americans, universal health care for every citizen). All of these are things that many have long dismissed as panacea, and I hope they now seem more like pragmatic necessities. It gives me a sense of optimism to imagine society getting through this together, and to people working together to be an active part of an emerging, improved new reality.

    VSG on 5/11/20

Hey guys, I was scheduled for VSG on 3/30, but was delayed to 5/11 when the hospitals stopped doing elective surgeries because of COVID-19. My insurance requires a 6 month program, plus I had some travel that pushed surgery out a few more months. All in all, I've been at the pre-op routine for 10 months now. I'm down 63 lbs so far (382 -> 319) and am feeling like I can do this, but am nervous for the surgery. Not specifically the procedure and recovery, but the lifetime of change this will mean for me. During this 10 months, I have enjoyed going on vacation or a holiday, eating what I want, then losing all the weight in a week or two. My preference is no WLS, but am afraid I can't be disciplined enough to stay on the pre-op style program for the rest of my life. Anyone else have these thoughts prior to surgery?
  5. Running Shoes. I had 3 pairs of Asics with treads in almost-new condition (courtesy of my orthopedic benefit included in my health insurance) that I probably used less than 10 times each the past several years. Now I rotate through them twice a day to actually RUN, lol.
  6. My hair started falling out (ALOT) around the 3 month mark, and I think it probably stopped at the 7 month mark (about the time that I stopped losing weight on purpose). I lost quite a bit. Cut my hair super short pixie when it started to try to minimize the visible scalp look. Started to notice the sprouting of little itty bitty chicken hairs around month 10. I'm 1.5 years post op now, and I've got a TON of these chicken hairs all over my head, and they are about 3-4 -ish inches long now and still stick up when I don't style my hair, so it looks pretty funny. But I'll take em. Once they grow long enough to lay flat I will probably look close to normal again...though I dunno if I want to grow it back to the length it was before...we'll see.

    January 2020 Surgery Folks

Looks like everyone is doing well, no matter how small the loss, it is a loss. Well done all. Like everyone, isolation is harder when the kids have so much rubbish in the house to eat, but I have adpated to having smaller versions of what they eat, so we may have hot dogs, but I don't have a bun, I may have a corn wrap, and if they are having fries, I will have 3 or 4 and no more. Had a stall last week of -0.5lbs, but back to losing 3-3.5lbs a week every week as of today. So 83lbs down since the op, feeling strong, cycling loads, doing so much gardening and lifting etc, I feel great, my body looks so different and lets just say my wife is very very pleased, says it is like having a new man!! Pic on the right was NYE 2019 (4 months ago in fancy dress Run DMC gear at an 80's party), the pic on the left is me today. So shirt off pics I am afraid, didn't do that. The best thing I have ever done. As a big drinker before, I have not had a sip since NYE and I feel great. I will have another drink soon, but at the moment I am not bothered even though my wife is having a G&T or fruit cider most nights. Just being a better me. Love it. Stay safe all.

    Hair loss

Hello, I am new to the forum. About a year ago (05/17/2019) I had my gastric sleeve, I lost 90 kilos in a year, the doctor is very happy, but not me because I have lost almost 90% of my hair, after two months of my operation it started to fall and never stopped. I should have bought a wig. It is very sad, before I did not want to go out because I was very fat (170kg) and now because I have no hair. Even with the wig I feel observed and I feel insecure. Everyone tells me that "you are so well", but I know they realize that my hair is not mine. At home I always wear a hat. I take multivitamins, but there are no changes. It's hard, really hard.
  9. Its been 15 years and 10 months since my surgery and I have lost 196 lbs and kept it off. I have a goal for this year of getting down to 164 lbs from 199 lbs where I'm at now. I was 24 lbs heavier just over 2 months ago. I've been using an app called myfitnesspal.com to lose the weight. It took my a little bit to get the hang of it but now I'm comfortable with it. I pick my foods and it gives my the serving size and calories and deducts the calories from my daily limit. It sets up your plan by diet, starting weight and goal weight. As you lose the weight you change your current weight and it adjusts your allowable daily calories to keep you losing weight. I tried it free for a month and was shocked at how much I had lost so I purchased a one year plan and it wasn't expensive. I have the app on my phone and it is easy to use. I hope that this information is helpful for someone.
  10. My “6 month” check in was scheduled for mid-March, but was canceled due to COVID-19. My weight loss had stalled at about 50% of my excess weight and I was feeling really down about it. I started Noom about 5 weeks ago and have slowly lost 10 more lbs. Too slowly. Now I’m ratcheting up my exercise with HIIT and body strength training on the Peloton app. Free for 90 days.
  11. I had the best one this morning, half a banana, half a cup of baby spinach, 1/4 cup frozen mango, 1/4 cup frozen blueberries, 1/3 cup kefir, water as required. I make it with my 10 month old granddaughter, as it is part of her routine. Then we divide it between myself, DIL and bubs...…..she loves all smoothies! We don't usually have blueberries, its usually strawberries or passionfruit with the same of the other ingredients (frozen because it keeps your drink cold). You can use anything really. I use it to swallow down all my vitamins/minerals, which is 8 capsules. I always have a really sore tummy after and feel full all day after having it, but I still think that getting that in with all its nutrients is better than nothing at all. I think we have about half a cup each. Kefir has more protein than milk and lots of probiotics too, so I think it is an improvement on my 3 crackers with cheese...…….that I now dump...…... but used to be the only thing I could keep down. I had some roast pork and roast carrot last night with some thin gravy. It was lovely :) Still lots of issues with dumping, stomach pain after intake, diarrhoea, zero energy and being puffed just walking/getting dressed...….but right now that's the norm for me and I know its just trying to learn my new system! Best, L x
  12. Cheated on my 2 week liquid diet the first week a few times. Nothing crazy! Scrambled eggs, crackers, rice and chicken. All those things i had once. I've been very good the 2nd week. Drinking 3-5 protein shakes a day. Averaging less than 10 carbs a day. 120 oz of water. Feel super guilty about it and scared I might of messed up for my surgery (sleeve) . My surgery is Thursday in Mexico. Praying that I haven't.
  13. 1. The longer I go without seeing people, the greater my opportunity to surprise them with my new skinny self! 2. It doesn't matter that my bras don't fit, b/c I don't have to wear one! 3. By wearing jammies every day, I have no idea what size clothing I wear, so it will be a fun surprise when I finally decide to get dressed again! 4. Working from home, I don't have to worry about temptations from coworkers bringing in donuts, cookies, etc. 5. Also no restaurant temptations, since I eat every meal at home. 6. I can use all the $$ I'm saving on not getting hair and nails done to get extra glamorous when I break out of here someday. 7. Amazon delivers my favorite protein shakes. 8. I have plenty of time to try various free workout videos on YouTube. 9. Plenty of time for weighing experiments, before shower/after shower, before pee/after pee; the possibilities are endless. 10. I can drink as much water as I want, b/c I can pee every 10 minutes if I have to (which is also fun for #9).

    Slow losers club

I had a lap band removed one year ago this month, then had GSL on 9/4/19 with pre-op weight 268, DOS weight 263. I’m a slow loser as well. I am only down to 227. I exercise 5 days a week for 30-45 minutes with a trainer. I probably consume 1200 calories/day. No weight loss in 2 months. Not sure what I am doing wrong. Suggestions?
  15. I weighed 302 before I started this journey about a month ago. I lost 12 pounds and then had my appointment with my surgeon. He wants me to lose 10 more pounds and told me to call in after I've lost 5 of that 10 pounds to set a surgery date. I've gone from literally sitting in my bed all day, eating A LOT of whatever sounded good at the moment. Now I feel like I'm eating practically nothing and I'm walking a mile to a mile and a half every day. I've lost 2 of the 5 pounds but I CAN NOT LOSE ANOTHER POUND. I go from 290 to 288, back up to 290 and back to 288 again. I step on the scale and I just want to cry. Honestly, I am on the verge of just starving myself to lose this 3 pounds to get my appointment. I don't know what else to do. I thought the weight would be falling off with all the huge changes I made, but it's just not happening.
  16. My last appointment in 2019 the dietitian basically told me if she had been the one to talk to me and give a yes or no as a candidate she would of said no to me. Why? Because I am fussy and I don't like fish. My blood work was good. I was around 170 pounds to which I was told I am losing too much and I should of tapered off by then and been in maintenance. When I left there I felt very frustrated as I was a slow loser and maybe that was the goal they had set for me, but mine was lower. Anyway, she put me on an emergency list to go back in January to talk to her again so they could check on me. It's an hour drive and $20 to park. When I left there I tried more suggestions of what else to add to my diet and found that I was eating when I wasn't hungry, I was pushing myself to eat more than I wanted and more often than not I suffered for hours after eating. I did this for about 2 weeks and then went back to how I was doing it before.

Now they've been calling since January trying to book an appointment and I keep giving excuses as to why I can't go. They called each month and now because of covid-19 they are willing to do phone appointments so I agreed. I told the dietitian about my previous experience and how it wasn't helpful. When I told her I was down to 145 on my scale she told me that once again I would be put on the emergency list as it more than a year later and I shouldn't be losing anymore weight and if I continued to do so I would likely be a failure and gain it all back. Hopefully the next one is over the phone also and I will just tell them what they want to hear. I will tell them I gained 10 pounds and I eat fish every other day and all the other stuff they say I need to eat.

And like the last time for a couple weeks I tried to incorporate more food and more calories, and once again I suffer, I am so full I feel sick. I need to spend sometimes hours after laying down. Sometimes I pace in the bathroom because I am so close to throwing up. I haven't had to take gravol much over the course of my journey but after those two appointments they were becoming vital in my survival. Plus I was gaining weight, quickly. So here I am again, back to the way I was doing that feels right for me.

I just don't understand why they are pushing for me to eat when I am not hungry... that's what got me to the weight I was once was, that's a bad habit. If I feel hungry I eat. I eat 3 meals a day and 2 to 3 snacks. I hit my protein goals. I drink more than enough water. I take my vitamins and supplements. My weight goes up and and down within 5 pounds. I don't understand their concern to keep me as an emergency patient that needs to be so closely monitored. I am not underweight, I am not malnourished, in fact I am still overweight.

Am wondering if anyone else has had this issue with the dietitians afterward? It's very frustrating and I am close to saying good bye to them because they make me doubt myself and I think I am doing well. I want to go as low as I can go, not unhealthy low, but low enough that when I hit the stage where I ultimately gain some back, the lower I am the lower I will after that happens. If I end up at 140-150 I would be content with that. I will not be content with with 180.

      TisTrue

      Hi @BlueIGT,

Your journey sounds a bit similar to my own. I feel that I am fine and as one member somewhat unkindly pointed out I am still in the overweight category. But I have been told more than once that if my WLS has not slowed down by June 2020 I will most likely have to have a revision surgery or whatever it is called. I am not doing another surgery and honestly after reading so many different stories and doing more research I feel that unless a person is unhealthy meaning malnourished and their blood-work comes back bad, it is all a matter of opinion on the timing of WL. I mean if I get underweight that is one thing, so for you I'd say the same thing, if you are healthy, drinking water, blood-work looks good-decent amount of vitamins, eating veggies, getting an appropriate amount of low-fat protein, not underweight, keep up the good work of eating what/when/amount that YOUR PERSONAL body needs.

Thank you for sharing your experience and I am glad to know that I am not alone, not that I want you to be annoyed by DR.s but, yea. I spoke about my journey a week or so ago and although some comments made me do research and it did help a bit, I really don't think anyone quite got it. Thanks! Keep us posted.

    2. BlueIGT

      BlueIGT

It is good to know that you're not alone, that said you don't want others to experience it as well. I feel the same way, if I am not underweight, all my tests are good, I am taking all the vitamins I am supposed to, getting all the protein they tell me to, and drinking more than enough water I am not sure why I am being kept on this emergency list.

I've just read your post, I hope it slows down and stops where you want it to and you won't require another surgery. It's frustrating when it feels like the team is against you, I mean I am glad that they are looking out for me but it seems extreme and puts me in panic mode. My team has always said that I wouldn't probably get below 175, but I had gotten below 175 on my own (then gained it all back and then some, rinse repeat), so I always knew I should be able to get down to where I wanted. I just never knew they'd have an issue with me exceeding their expectations.

Thanks for responding, it is good to know that I am not alone. Keep on keeping healthy and all the best in the future.

A year and a half post op

well I guess you're right - I had to drop from an average of 1700 kcal/day to 1500 kcal/day to lose these extra 10 (now eight) lbs I want to get rid of, and it was tough at first, but I've kind of gotten used to it. I could never go back to what I was eating the first year, though (600-800 kcal/day). Or at least not that calorie level.

does anyone gain weight before you lose?

fluctuations and stalls are a normal part of the journey, so if they're driving you nuts, just weigh yourself less often. also, weight loss slows the further out you go, so you may or may not see those 10-lbs-per-month losses much anymore, since you're now five months out. I lost 10-12 lbs a month for about the first six months, then it dropped to about 5-8 lbs a months until about the year mark, then it was around 2-5 lbs a month until it finally stopped at about 20 months out. It's because the smaller you get, the fewer calories your body needs, so you're going to lose fewer lbs as you get closer to goal.
  19. I thought I was pretty invincible after losing all of my excess weight - thought I could eat anything and maintain my loss. And for awhile, I could. I thought there was no way I was going to have bounce back weight, like so many people do. But in year 3, it happened - as it does to so many of us. I also gained 20 lbs. Ten of it I really needed to gain because I'd gotten too thin, but the last 10 - no. I need to get that off. So far I've lost about two lbs of it - and it is TOUGH. your tool still works, but it'll be slow going. I've always logged my food, so if you're not doing that anymore, do it. It's very helpful. I've also had to lower my calorie intake, which is tough to do if you're used to eating at a certain level. I don't think you have to go all the way back to protein shakes, but doing the things you did the first year or so - protein first, then veggies, and then if you still have room, maybe a small serving of fruit or whole-grain carb, all the while watching your overall calorie intake, should do the trick. if you need more structure, I know a lot of vets who've joined Weight Watchers to deal with regain. A lot of them really like the new WW program.
  20. hey everyone. I'm almost 5 months out of surgery and have lost 60 lbs. Ive been one of people that decides to torture myself and weighs almost every day. The fluctuations i see on the scale are crazy. This entire month I've had a stall. I realize that I lost a good amount of weight in 4 months, so I'm sure it's normal but frustrating. I've literally only lost one pound the entire month and I've not done anything wrong. I'm hoping I break that soon as most months I average around 10 lbs loss. Anyway, what I notice weighing every day is I will lose a few lbs in several days, then it seems like a go up a lb or so, only to relose and then some after that, little at a time. Does anyone else that weighs often notice this? Maybe it would be better if I weighed once a week or less? Thanks!!

    Medical loan for poor credit

I was in the same situation, but I did not have a medical loan. I got a loan from a third party credit company . More than that I know a lot of friends of mine who would go for a loan from a third party credit rather than having a loan from a bank. But you have to choose a great loan company for that, because you don't need to be scammed. To cut it short, if you are looking for a good loan company, I would really recommend you to take a closer look at the best credit company on the market https://credit-10.com/nl/zakelijke-lening/ To be honest, me and a lot of friends of mine, and friends of their friends were approved for a loan from this company and they were able to solve their issues and to repay the loan in a very short time.

A year and a half post op

I'm 18 months post vsg. Lost 175 pounds, gained 10 back. I can eat a lot of slider foods but when I eat solids it makes me puke because I'm not eating slow like I should. I'm also eating candy again too. Today I've puked 3-4 times from eating too fast and now my whole esophagus and stomach are super irritated. For the next 2 days I'm going to avoid solids. I am totally on my own and feel like this is the hardest it's been for me so far. I never hit my goal but am only 35 pounds away. I still want to get there and know I need to find my way back to ketosis. Carbs and candy won't help me get there. I need to make some big changes.
  23. I’ve had a hard time finding foods I tolerate and rarely eat meat and stick to low carb foods as well. My issue is keeping things as simple as possible due to severely limited energy. For the most part it’s the same basic foods ie. a veggie burger and an egg. At least for my one main meal which is lunch. I found Real Good Foods products, I started with their chicken enchiladas that are in my calorie range, and low carb, plus my pouch didn’t totally reject them. To be honest nausea right now is a constant companion as is pain but that’s another subject. The enchiladas taste really good. Just the right portion size for where I’m at around 4.69 ounces, 190 calories, 20 grams protein and 4 Total carbs (2 net carbs) the beef enchiladas are the same. They also have breakfast sandwiches with cauliflower buns .... I’m trying the second two things for the first time because I placed an order online since they have a sale and you get three free choczero syrup with the order. And no worrying about finding it in the store or having to deal with the grocery. plus there’s $10 off and free shipping with I think $59. I spent $50 and change for 16 meals and three free syrups. Delivered free. I hope it’s ok I share this. I thought it was great. I can’t do this often. But needed it right now .... and it’s comes out $3.18 per meal without counting the syrups that are regular price $7.99 each. It’s convenient frozen meals but like fresh homemade meals in quality. http://realgoodfoods.refr.cc/christinek
  24. You look great! Congratulations! Can I ask how tall you are? My surgeon said my goal may be 165. I think 145. I’m 5’3”. 66 yrs. Sleeve 9/23/19. HW 285 SW 245 CW 180. When I see someone look great like you always want to put it in prospective.
  25. Hello, all! I haven't posted in a while but I'm back (for now, hahaha). I had RNY in January 2019 and I'm sitting around 274. I've lost about 145 pounds since the surgery but I've been in a weird headspace about it since I'm not yet at goal. I think I put myself in maintenance and have gone back to basics in terms of lowering my caloric intake, watching my macros, and making sure I get at least 64 oz of fluid in. Hopefully I hit goal by the time my 2 year surgiversary rolls around, but until then, I'm celebrating all of the small victories. The best ones to date? I had a doctor's appointment today and the arm cuff fit around my upper arm! And my blood pressure was great, well within normal ranges! I was able to fit in the chair that you sit in to give blood. Being able to let that arm down and have ample space to get situated felt unreal. I told my doctor that I wanted to start TTC next year and he told me that he didn't see any issue with me trying. I could've cried when he told me that. All I've ever wanted was to be a mom and that was my reason for getting surgery; to be healthy enough to become a mother and be able to raise my kids into adulthood. I'm also getting rid of clothes that I'd been saving because I couldn't fit them before surgery and they're now too big. All of that to say, don't let the number on the scale discourage you! It may not be moving the way you want it to, but you are so much more than the number on the scale and the changes you're making will impact your life in ways the scale won't/can't reflect.
