Wanting to meet successful patients after a year
livvsmum replied to anthonyb's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
Congrats on your success! That is an awesome loss! I'm 2 years post op (and a couple months) and I've lost 145 pounds and have been maintaining below my goal weight for over a year. It's always good to hear the success stories to remind us that it is indeed possible and possible long-term :-) -
Had my first medically supervised weight loss visit
katanne posted a topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
It was so much less intimidating than I thought it would be! My surgeon and insurance don't require a specific amount of weight to lose aside from the two-week 1000 cal max diet right before the operation. I was terrified I would have to strictly justify everything I ate to an obsessive degree. Instead I was told to hit the 60-90g Protein target every day, sample different protein powders and shakes, to slow down eating so that a meal takes me 20-30 minutes to eat, to practice sipping Water slowly, and to start the protein first, veggies next, carbs only if you're still hungry pattern. And no meal skipping (I tend to skip breakfast). She said most people naturally start to lose weight even pre-surgery when they start these habits. I'll have a weigh-in next month but it doesn't sound like it'll be Draconian. -
Had my first medically supervised weight loss visit
HanSolo1977 replied to katanne's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Congrats @@katanne ! My first appointment with the dietician is in a couple of weeks. My plan is the same as yours... I don't have to lose a specific amount of weight (outside the 2 week liquid diet), but gaining is a deal breaker. I'm also lucky the only real thing my insurance requires is phone calls with their people. -
Has anyone seen a difference in your relationship for the negative after surgery? For me I dnt feel like the same person anymore.. but feel selfish for it.

I am getting my lap band on March 31st. I will be started my pre-operation diet on the 17th. I can't weight to get stated. Starting weight 219.

Ok, I have to laugh, really really hard. I had all the fill removed from my band, because of the nausia I've been fighting, so I don't have the extra protection from over-eating. (the band is purely restrictive) I've been on a rip-roaring High and so I expected to be gaining weight. I also have been drinking Rum and light fruit beverages, becuase I wanna. I've also been eating ice cream and pasta. Yes, that's right, I've been eating pasta this week! Pasta and bread, everyday! :hungry: I'm down 5 pound this week.

From the album: Before
I've known for years I've needed to do something about my weight, but earlier this year was another beginning for me. I've never been this big, so I made sure to capture as much as I could. -
3 years post op.... Now struggling
agirlofaith replied to kavi's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You are nursing!!!! Your body needs so many more calories then! It's probably in starvation mode. I would think you should constantly nibble on good proteins all day, and constantly sip. Upping your intake would surely fuel your body to drop more weight especially while nursing!! -
breaking the rules....small bites, chew lots, eat small amounts
lisabenrubi posted a topic in WLS Veteran's Forum
The golden rules of band surgery were very easy initially, and now that I'm 4 years out, have gotten very difficult to maintain. I am feeling the consequences (vomiting, discomfort) and my weight loss is stalled. I have to remember that this band is a full time job, MINE. it will not moderate the small amounts, bites and chewing...social situations make the golden rules hardest. how do the rest of you manage? lisa -
No menu, I just try to stay around 1200 calories a day (that's now, at my current weight. when I was larger, I could have more calories and still lose). I eat 3oz Protein and 1/2 cup veggies at my meals. I keep track of what I'm eating at www.livestrong.com/thedailyplate.

Why are people afraid to call their doctors
Texasbandit replied to cheryl2586's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I totally agree. Or people saying that they are throwing up, cant keep anything down, not losing weight, or in a lot of pain and they are 3 weeks or more past their operation date. So it makes me think is there another side to this story? Maybe they are wanting validation for something the doctor has told them is a no-no. -
Dr. Valenzuela? Mi Doctor Hospital?
magicianbeautician74 replied to KarlaG's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
I had mine with Dr Ortiz at mi doctor hospital. I believe it was previously a military hospital. It is not fancy by any stretch. But I was checked every 30 min or so after my surgery, my husband was provided a bed beside me and didn't leave my side other than when in the OR. English was not a barrier whatsoever, and they were very kind and compassionate. They are more attentive than they are here In Canada. You will be in good hands. Sleeved Sept 10/2016 HW 267 SW 252 current weight 232 -
Happy sleeve day! I had mine on 8/9/12. I'm very excited to see the surgeon tomorrow to find out how much more weight i've lost. How are you doing, what things are you eating and how is your weightloss coming along?

Should I Consider WLS, specifically, the Sleeve?
automatic replied to pushforth's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I am 35 years old, and I had the sleeve done on March 5th. When I went in to the program (October 31, 2014), my weight was 529lbs. When I started the four week pre-op diet (Feb. 5, 2015), I was 517. On surgery day I was 480 and today, a week and a half later I am 467. An astonishing loss in a relatively short period of time, and is (according to my surgeon) not the norm. I am thrilled, though. I have had zero complications. No nausea, no vomiting, no cramping and most of all, no pain. I was completely off of the narcotic pain killers within 36 hours of surgery, and have been able to take in every last bit of liquids and Protein that my surgeon requests. I consider myself very fortunate that I have had no difficulty compared to others. I firmly believe that recovery is 20% physical and 80% mental, or at least it has been for me. If you get in to the mindset that VSG is a tool that you will be able to use to get healthy and to lead a much longer, fuller life, then you will not only be able to do it, but to succeed. VSG has been one of the best decisions I have ever made. Good luck to you. -
Do as much research as you can.. the lapband is only a tool and requires a life long commitment... Getting started - well call for a consultation - again this site provides many great doctors/clinics. My insurance denied my request because I did not meet the qualifications. My insurance has also become more strict in their requirements.. they want a year long doctor monitored diet, 5 year weight fluctuation, 100 lbs over weight and a BMI of 40.. needless to say I was a selfpay - so depending on whether or not you are paying yourself will also determine your next step... I would suggest research, call for a consult, start the insurance process and go from there... You could always call your insurance first to see what they require...good luck

Well, I was banded in August (3rd to be exact), and it's now 7 months later and I'm down 40 pounds to 225#. I can't tell you how wonderful it is to now have my life back! A couple of things have happened to me since banding...my horse died (Feb 3rd), my aunt died (march 14th), and i bought a new horse (march 15th). The band has helped me in MANY ways, the most important was to get back into the saddle and showing again...I have a horse show this weekend in Tacoma, WA! I feel great; however, there are some frustrating parts...since loosing 40#, I haven't had the want to get a fill...but, I'm finding that I'm throwing up daily, no matter how little or much I eat. I know that my band hasn't slipped, I feel no discomfort but I'm wondering if it adjusted to a smaller size since I've lost a good amount of weight.... Here are some pictures of me now......

This is my first blog, so glad I found this place. I am so glad to have freedom again. I love to ride rides like at 6 flags and Disney world. I have not been able to do this in years and years. I cant wait! Im 59yrs old and I know I will be able to see my grandchildren grow up and be a active part of their lives. I had gastric sleeve surgery on May 13,2013. When I started this journey I weighed 302. I lost 60 pounds before surgery. Today is June 22 and I have lost a total of 65 p. I was discouraged at first but I realized I was not eating enough protein or liquid. When I increased this the weight started coming off. I don't think I am eating enough. When I eat chicken I get full very quickly. I still drink a protein drink for breakfast and a protein bar around 12 noon. This gives me 50 grams of protein. I use fitness pal to help keep track of me carbs and protein. I have went from a size mens 4x t-shirt and now I am almost in a 2x and have went down 3 sizes in pants. I have to go shopping very soon. Im still tired a lot, I have arthritis in my knees. It is better but it hinders my exercising. I sit and do sitting exercise and standing without moving my knees to much. The pool is the best.

Slower To No Weight Loss :(
Janet53 replied to rizabonita's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Sansmom, I am feeling a little better about my 6 week stall since reading your post. Did you do anything to get your weight loss moving? Or did the stall just end? I am feeling so depressed right now. Mainly because I have been exercising and eating 1200 calories or less and not seeing any results. My partner who weighs 112 cuts out some carbs and doesn't change anything else and loses weight! And she isn't even trying to lose weight! I used to think people who complained about these kinds of stalls were doing something wrong, eating too much and not knowing it, etc. but now that this has happened I realize this is real. My metabolism really has slowed down to nothing. I would survive really good if I were stranded somewhere without any food. Thanks a lot ancestors. And while we are at it, thanks a lot menopause! I should have listened to my older sister who told me when I was in my twenties to lose the weight then because it becomes impossible later. -

:ohmy:It was so painful. I chewed my chicken over and over but sent it down too fast and it got stuck. It was the worse feeling ever! especially being alone at home, I thought I was going to die and by the time my family comes home I am dead. I need to work on not eating too fast. Still love my band more and more everyday! Surgery : 33 days ago Start weight: 165 Now: 149 (same in the last two weeks) -
