    APRIL 2009 Bandsters Unite!

Well I hope you can get in in March! That would be great. I am a stay at home mom (two boys, 1.5years and 3.5 years). So I'll be "back to work" right away  I will be getting some extra help for the first week or two and I'll have to start planning how to lift properly and all that. I've seen others post that they were back to work in a week (desk job) and back to there old selves by 3 weeks. It probably depends on the person I'm sure. Where are you going?

    Struggling!

Each doc's nutritional requirements are different pre and post op it seems. I was on a low carb diet for two weeks before the surgery and was just required to have a light dinner before 6pm with no liquids after midnight.
  3. I have been feeling nausea all afternoon, I had a pudding and after that, It started, and I have not been able to get rid of it.. I am 2 weeks out today, I tred to have some water and everything I have tried has not helped, it just gets worse, does anyone have this feeling ? and what did you do about it? if anything:sad:

    Hey Everyone!

Hello, I am 23 and getting the lapband on the 31st. I am also self pay as my insurance doesn't cover. I have been on the pre-op liquid diet for a week and a half and i'm down 8 lbs. Surgery day is so close! Good luck with everything!

    2 months post-op

I'm almost 6.5 months out and I'm still not eating what I'm "supposed" to be eating, in terms of the amounts. I'm supposed to be able to eat half a cup of food, perhaps 1/4 cup if it's meat or something dense. I'm at maybe half that. At my 6 month checkup a couple weeks ago, my surgeon did not seem concerned, mainly because I don't have any pain or vomiting, which would be an indication of serious problems. She just said to continue measuring and tracking everything, and if it takes me three small meals to finish a half cup of food, then do it. I also supplement with a shake a day, sometimes two if my stomach is being particularly bitchy. If you're not feeling any pain or vomiting and you're getting in your Water and Protein, I wouldn't worry about it. It takes a lot of time to heal and adjust. How is your water and protein intake, btw? Are you able to get in what you need, or at least close to it?
  6. Hello out there. I was banded on Feb 28,2008 and have only lost 36 pounds so far. I have now figured out that this band is a three step process which includes the band, exercise(ugh!) and proper eating. I need some suggestions for daily menues. What do you guys and gals eat in an average day? After so many years of eating anything, mostly carbs I cant get organized enough to plan and execute a good eating plan. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Unusual question - not sure where it goes

My doc made me wait 6 weeks, and I don't think it will slip your band, but, can pull stitches which could lead to a slip or pull stitches in your port and make it come unattached... and this is speculation, but my port was flipped early on so I had to have another surgery.. and I was cleaning my house 1 week post op and I shouldn't have been. I was bending over, etc. I can't help but wonder if that was part of it. I thought I was taking it easy, but hindsight is 20/20.

Unusual question - not sure where it goes

In my opinion it's all a matter of what you need to do within reason. I have an 18 month old daughter and 2 days after surgery I was picking her up and carrying her because I had to. Now, when I say within reason...obviously my 20lb daughter and your 140lb husband should not be compared but two weeks sounds reasonable. I'm a week out and still pretty sore in the port area and can definitely tell when I've been nending/lifting/stretching too much.

    late fill?

I was banded on 10/21 and didn't have my first fill until 1/14, almost 3 months post op. I go for #2 next week and I'll be 4 months post op. I think like with everything else, each doc is different. I wish I had one that could get me in every 2 to 3 weeks for a fill lol Still on the hunt for the sweet spot :-)
  10. You should be fine to travel 4 weeks out - I was back to work day 6. You shouldn't have any issues - you won't even have your 1st fill yet and barely getting to regular food (depending on your doctor)... Why put it off - but that's just mho...

    Gross Bathroom Question

Me too. I have a cocktail of stuff I take to avoid constipation per the direction of my Dr because apparently not going for a week is bad. Yup, me too! I'm 4.5 months post-op and if I don't take 4 Colace and fiber a day, it is an absolute NIGHTMARE that involves the required use of surgical gloves and Vasaline. I'll leave it at that.....

Need Lap Band Buddy / Mentor Looking for 200+ Mentor

Oh yes!!! The last meal.......to be honest, now I can't even remember what it was. I kept getting a low grade fever(due to sinuses allergies weeks before) and went off my pre-op diet because I thought they would not do my surgery. :ohmy:I then got another letter from my PCP saying I was fine. So I was back to the pre-op diet. Although, there were no amount of pounds that I was required to lose. You have a great attitude. I am sure you will be fine and reach your goal. :blushing:

    making the lapband decision

Let me put some real talk on you honey. Everything the above poster said is a great summary! I am 21 days post op and frankly a littlle bewildrered, confused and a bit disappointed. It all depends on what your currently healthy and lifestyle is. Personally I think the band emotionally has been harder and especially since I didnt have bad eating habits before I got the band. I also worked out too. So with the band I was expecting a bit more I guess. I dunno if my metabolism just sucks or what, but I'm very discouraged. I didnt expect to lose 40lbs in a month or anything. Just a pound a week or something. I lost quickly before the surgery, but after only about 6 lbs then nothing since. It was Water weigh I assume. There is a serious lack of consistancy too with the nutrition, aftercare, and recovery per doctor. That I didnt know until I started posting on here. Yes, my hunger is curbed. If you have a problem with overeating then the lapband is for you. If you are wanting to use it as a tool to better eating habits and excersize then yes its for you. If you already work out and eat fairly well and expecting this to push your body a little and go to the next level then I dunno. It hasnt happened for me at least yet. Pre op I did south beach for 5 days, which is basically a low carb diet. The post op diet was a breeze IMO and didnt mind being on liquids but I was on liquids the 10 days then on to mushie food afterwards and now on solids. Your doctor may do things differently. gas pains after surgery was the worst part. They blow your stomach up with gas to move your organs outta the way so the band can be placed. The gas get strapped and felt like i had constant back pain and chest pain, but that lasted 5 days. The surgery itself was easy. So proceed with caution and think hard. Can you do this without the band? Are you very motivated? Or do you yo-yo diet a lot and overeat?

    S-L-O-W-L-Y but surely!

11 lbs in 7 weeks is NOT slow (let alone very slow)>...it is right on target. 1-2 lbs overall average per week is the target from the band makers.....so you are right there. Plse don't call it slow.....because those that truly ARE losing slowly (ie. less than 1 lbs/week) then feel bad! You are doin' great...don't knock it.

    S-L-O-W-L-Y but surely!

I agree with Yoda, you are doing very well. The band is not like other weight loss surgeries. It is designed for you to lose 1-2 pounds a week, so based on 11 pounds in 7 weeks, you are averaging 1.57 pounds per week, which is great. It is not slow at all and it is healthier to lose at that rate. I average between 1-2 per week and am thrilled with it.

    Fill drs in upstate NY?

Hi Lisa, i have a similar problem. Three hours to see my surgeon, lunch, and three hours back! i called another bariatric surgeon's office today and they said if i would transfer my records etc.that he would take me as a patient and give me my fills. This office is only 45 mins. away. i am going to pray about this, do some research and think!!!! Mostly pray! Hope this encourages you. cal
  17. A question for the group~ So my last fill was in April, filled to about 5ccs. I have only lost about 10lbs since then, and only 25lbs total, so I have felt like I was maybe just a hair away from the sweet spot, but vomiting pretty often and PBing so I haven't wanted to go any tighter. But over the last 6 weeks or so, I have been eating less and less and as I eat less, it seems like the less I CAN eat. I feel like my band gets tighter, the less I eat. I am eating Protein shakes in the morning, yogurt, a soft lunch and chewing really well, but at times turning to shakes just to quell the evening hunger. I am thinking that I might be too tight, but it's so counter intuitive to me because, #1, I am not losing that much weight and #2, I thought losing weight made you looser anyway. Now for the first time I am having heartburn... something that I have never had a problem with before. Why would my band suddenly just get tighter?? Whatcha'll think??
  18. If you have the surgery Aug 8th it will be 6 weeks before the wedding. I see no reason for you not to have it done. I am 8 weeks post op and feeling absolutely fantastic!! Recovery should be over by then. You will still be healing inside but you should be able to have a blast at the wedding too!! If it was me I would go for it!! Good Luck and God Bless!! Fran xo

    Back on the site!

Hi Sue, The first procedure was by far the most extensive and complicated. It was an extended abdominoplasty, monsplasty (removal of excess skin in the groin area), tightening of my abdominal wall, liposuction all around my front, etc. I also, at the same time, underwent a crescent medial thigh lift. If you don't know, this procedure removes the excess skin on the inside of the thigh. The surgeon did liposuction there as well. In total, they removed 8 some-odd pounds of flesh and fat. I actually had a complication from the surgery, illeus of the stomach, a condition where the stomach and bowels go into shock because of the amount of trauma, coupled with anesthesia. No fault of the surgeon, and the team treated me very well. I was in the hospital for six days rather than three. The pain wasn't too bad. I was pretty doped up. All in all, I wouldn't hesitate to do it again at all. Just a few weeks ago, I had my second procedure in Bangkok. This was a buttock lift and further liposuction of my back and flanks. This surgery was a PIECE OF CAKE compared to the first one. All in all, I saved over $40k too....Whoa. Regarding cost, I was quoted a little over $50k for the procedures I needed by various surgeons here in Boston. That's when I began researching Thailand, which I love anyway. I had all procedures done there for just a bit over $10,000 USD. Incredible. Hope this helps, and feel free to IM me or message me if I can explain anything further. John

    Banded 3/28/06

Congratulations on your terrific loss and welcome! I was banded 2 days after you but can't start on solid foods until week 6. Good luck and continued success.
  22. Was banded just over 3 weeks ago and went back to work today ( not easy as I have a very physical job). I was taking celebrex for all the pain in feet knees ect... My nurse said that the doctor MAY not want me to continue using the celebrex, and I won't until I talk to him,but I was curious if any bandsters use this med after their surgery?
  23. Thanks, greyhoundmom! It really does help to know that I'm not alone with the problems and struggles I've had! I joined my local Jazzercise class and went tonight for the first time! It felt great! I'm going to take it one day at a time -- go to classes at least 3 times a week, and maybe four and once I get on the exercise habit high, I may get the guts to go in and get a fill. Oh and btw -- I love that you love the grey hounds --personally I've never had one, always thought they were great looking dogs, though! We have a "basset brigade" -- we have 5 bassets (a mom, 3 of her babies that are 2-1/2 years old, and a stray a neighbor brought over), plus a couple of mutts! Luckily we have a VERY large yard!!!
  24. I had the lapband done 2 years ago. I had success for the first 6 months, dropping almost 50 pounds. I didn't realize the problems associated with and things that could affect the band. I started waking up with fluid coming up and coughing and choking, as well as the heartburn. After putting up with this for a while and getting no relief, I went to my doctor. At first they gave me pills to relieve severe heartburn, stating I had some sort of gastro itis (???) problem. With still no relief, I went back and they took some fluid out, stating that the change in weather can affect the band. I had immediate relief. I went back 2 weeks later and had the fluid put back in. Within a couple of weeks, the same thing started all over again. This was the beginning of a long battle. Over the course of the next year and a half, it was take some fluid out; put some back in; take it all out; put some back in a couple of times; take a little out; take it all out.....I just couldn't get back to that perfect "sweet spot" I'd had before after my initial 3rd fill. I ended up stretching the pouch (a couple of times) and after the "in and out fill" rollercoaster, I had a revision surgery where they took out the old band and put in a new one. So I've essentially started over. That was 3 months ago and I'm scared to death to go get a fill now, for fear I will screw it up and stretch the pouch! But yet, I'm gaining weight and am desperately looking for help! Can anyone help me? I feel like such a failure.

a kind of personal question ...

yes agreed ... it is a blessing in disguse!! IT used to be the time of the month i put weight on ... now ... it is when i lose the most ... just to the fact eating is so ... challenging!! i do think i am at my sweet spot though ... i am losing about 1kg (2.2pounds) per week ... perhaps a touch more ... it is all sweet otherwise!
