    January 2023

I’m approved for Jan 4th- excited but nervous- I have to start pre op diet on the 21st for two weeks
  2. Thank you everyone for your input! I do notice the hiccups, and the burping, which also happens when I’m not eating too. Also I had my first post-op appt on 12/7 this week I’m on liquids and puréed stage and my surgeon told me that the sleeve can hold up to 6oz so I’ve been consuming about 1/2 cup of food which is 4oz. I bought some ramekin bowls from Amazon they have different sizes I chose the 4oz ones and they’ve been great to use so I don’t have to measure 1/2 cup each time I eat since I have them to use as a guide. Good luck to everyone with their journeys pre-op and post-op!
  3. I paid for my surgery, but knew I was investing in my health and it will make up for it. So far our grocery trip is lasting almost 3 weeks and if I wanted I can make it to the month, since I can't have produce/fruits yet, and 1lb of protein is good for 10 meals, so I'm freezing some portions and my husband is eating from the protein I make. My blood pressure med is back to 5mg so my prescription of 3 months is going to last 6, have not been out to eat since Oct and even then I had started to only eat half of my portion and taking the rest home. I stopped drinking few weeks before surgery so we no longer have 2 boxes of beer in the pantry, no unhealthy snacks, or bread that goes bad. On the other side, my self esteem is coming back awd with that the wanting to shop lol but I have some clothes that do not fit and are new that I will wear till I hit the 100s, will mainly need bottoms, but once goal weight is hit, all bets are off [emoji1787] Sent from my SM-G960U1 using BariatricPal mobile app

how did surgery save you money?

Definitely the not paying the “clothing tax” anymore. Also, no double seats on flights, less in prescription costs, and my personal favorite- better car fuel economy! It’s crazy but instead of filling up every week I fill up every 2 and I’m driving the same amount or more.
  5. My surgery is next week (14th) . This is all good information. I appreciate it all. It will help me manage expectations and deal with the realities of sleeve. Good luck and thanks for being inspirations to those of us who are following you on this journey.
  6. ok we all know that bariatric surgery and the process leading to it is expensive. I couldn’t have afforded mine without some good insurance and financial assistance from my family to offset the costs.. But those of you post op, how has the surgery SAVED you money?? for me, I spend next to nothing on lunches (down from about $8 average a day) because I bring it from my home now and my total grocery bill is going down, saving even more. I was able to buy some new very cheap bras because my boobs have deflated but now getting to be more standard sizes… also am not stopping off for “treats” which probably is another $10-20 a week…. and bought work friendly shirts from Amazon for $20 rather than a specialty plus sized store for $30+++
  7. it takes a while to decipher the cues because it takes a while for them to fully develop while you are healing… i didn’t really start to feel things until i was on soft food and much stronger on regular food… i am 5 weeks po so still early on but ca. tell a big difference watch for hiccups, burps, feeling of pressure in throat, pressure in chest, heart rate or breathing changes, those are all cues people have reported (mine are stomach heavy feeling and hiccups)

    Surgery gass

It often takes a good week for the gas to escape. But burping & farting won’t help because the gas is actually in your abdominal cavity not in your digestive system. The pain occurs because it rises & settles under your lungs causing nerve pressure (the shoulder pain). It escapes by attaching itself to water molecules in your lungs & you breathe it out. So gentle activity like short walks (around your home, garden, street) as you’re able, marching on the spot, carefully lifting your arms up & down ( don’t pull on your tummy) & slow, deep breathing help the gas escape. A heat pad can also help ease the discomfort too. The pain on sipping is swelling from the surgery from where they inserted the breathing tube. Try warm drinks - warm water, green or herbal tea, even add room temp or warm water to your shakes. They are often more soothing than cool or cold liquids. It will get easier every day & will be gone in a couple more days.

  10. Hi, I’m Alicia. I just had the gastric sleeve done on 11/21 so I’m a lil over 2 weeks post-op and I know when I’m hungry, but I’m having trouble telling when I’m feeling full. Has this happened to anyone else in the beginning or in general after surgery? I try to really listen to my body when I’m eating, and eat slower, but I’m still unable to tell when I’m full. I normally just stop eating when I feel like its in my throat and it’s going down slowly. I’ve been avoiding throwing up and I don’t want that to happen, so that’s why I try to not finish everything I’m eating at the time. Any advice on how to tell when you’re full or feeling satisfied? Thanks in advance!

    Fighting Depression and Mental Exhaustion

I told my wife before I had surgery that I would at some point or another regret my decision. I told her that her job was to remind me why it did it in the first place. Thankfully I didn't have to rely on her reminders too much, but there were definitely some times when I questioned if it was worth it. The good news is it does get easier and the bad days are a lot more rare now. I mention this because I think it's important to remember that some of the best things in life are also REALLY hard. Losing weight, whether it's with or without surgery is one of those hard, but ultimately satisfying things. Part of that satisfaction comes from knowing you endured the trial and came out a better person on the other side. I"m now coming up on 3 months post op and I can legitimately say that even though I still struggle sometimes, living with WLS is so much easier now than it was at 4 weeks. You can do it, but you just have to grin and bear it for a while. These sayings may sound trite, but reminding myself that "This too shall pass", and "It's a marathon, not a sprint" are what got me through the hard days.
  12. so i had 3 procedures...breast lift, tummy tuck and arm lift. and i gotta say, of the three, the breast lift was the surprise fave. while the TT addressed my vanity needs (to rock a bikini at my age, which doesn't happen often anyway), and the arm lift adressed my self-consciousness of my flappy upper arms when wearing sleeveless tops (which i wear ALL. THE. TIME.), the breast lift addressed a quality of life issue i didn't know i had. i go braless most of the time, and its nice to not have to deal with the post bra-wearing itch or the binding feeling of wearing one. i sleep more comfortably cuz i don't need a bra at night, nor do i have moist "underboobs" anymore. running (or any type of exercise) is much more comfortable cuz i dont have the extra skin or bulk bouncing around when i move vigorously. button front shirts fit nicely over my boobs without the tell-tale gap between buttons, so i no longer keep checking if im busting out or flashing a bit of boob or bra unintentionally.
  13. Hi guys, My name is Caitlyn, I’m going in into my fourth week post op from gastric sleeve surgery. I start advanced purée tomorrow but I’ve been struggling so hard with my depression and having mental breakdowns as well. I’m off from work for 8 weeks as I’m a RN, and being home alone is hard, I’m getting tired of drinking so many fluids, and even though I’m only taking in 1 protein shake a day, I get periods were I don’t want to drink anything at all. I’m somewhat regretting the surgery even though I’m seeing good results, any advice on how to fight this?

Diaphragm Discomfort 7 Weeks Post Op

So, the surgeons PA told me to go to the urgent care. She said she didn't think I necessarily needed to drive all the way to the ER - 45 minutes away, but she wanted me to be seen. She was concerned about pulmonary embolism. Well, urgent care took my vitals - all were fine. I really don't think this is a lung issue - I think it's a tummy issue. Urgent care couldn't do anything else for me. I'm not going to go sit for 6 hours in the ER, just to be told that everything is okay and to go home. I asked the PA to refer me for imaging. My hope is that it's just a pulled muscle, or something. I've been doing a lot of heavy lifting the last week.

    gained 3lb in 4 days...

Yeah lol . Pickles do that to me everytime so whenever I get cravings for pickles (often). I still weigh myself but since I am aware of what they do temporarily to me, it doesn't bother me. I think my max was +5 lbs in a day! But it went away in a day or so. Whenever I have a check in with my surgeon, I stay away from pickles for a week before! Ah and no sushi with soy sauce a week before either. Ha.

    gained 3lb in 4 days...

I've learned to only weigh myself once a week now because sometimes water weight can make a 2-4 pound fluctuation, and it'll drive ya nuts lol Watch salt intake and I bet it'll go away soon. Water weight sucks.
  17. Post - 4 weeks today. Able to eat just about anything, I haven't had any issues holding down any food. Except Orange Juice, but stomach instantly said NO. However I think I"m "overeating" meaning that I get to the point where my stomach is hurting before I stop eating. Am I doing too much? I guess I don't know how to "stop" eating before I get to the point where I'm like UGHGHGH my stomachhhhhh.. for the next 20 minutes. Any suggestions are welcome!

    Multivitamin help

Forever or are you still freshly recovering? I was told not to worry about it and then was cleared to take capsules at my 2 week follow up (assuming I handled them well, which i did.) Address it with your team, they can try to work with you. I tried so many different chewables, they are all disgusting.

    November 2022 surgery support!

Wow! Well done. I’m having such a hard time drinking what I need to while just sipping. Plus, eating is a nuisance. I’ve stalled on weight loss in my second week bc I’m not eating/drinking enough…I suspect. What’s your schedule/ technique?

    November 2022 surgery support!

Had my 2 week follow up, everything is going great. I have to start my gall bladder medicine today and in 2 weeks my B12 injections. Everything I have had to eat has settled good, and I'm consistently drinking 50-55oz which he said was good. I have not been doing much activity, I figured I will start when the dreaded 3-week stall comes around and that will trick it lol, let's see if that works lol

  22. Hey Everyone! So, I am 7-weeks post op, robot-assisted RnY gastric bypass. I have recently had some increased diaphragm pressure and discomfort. No real pain, but pressure and it is quite uncomfortable. I'm able to eat and drink. I haven't had any nausea or vomiting. I'm going to reach out to my surgical team, but I wondered if anyone else might have had this, too. It's possible that this was caused by wearing elastic-waist pants that were too snug - I did that for a couple of days in a row. Thanks! Jeanne

    Gas problems and binder.

I did not get a binder but did hold my belly with a pillow when getting in and out of bed, coughing and sitting. Held with my hand when walking and laughing. Gas pains for me were gone in 2 days, any discomfort at week 1. Now at week 2, I sleep on my sides, can bend kind of easily and only have discomfort if I twist too much Sent from my SM-G960U1 using BariatricPal mobile app

    Gas problems and binder.

The gas will pass in a few days, basically you just have to suffer through it. Sorry, I know it sucks! I wasn't told I had to wear a binder, but was given one int he hospital. I wore it once and it made me more uncomfortable than comfortable so I took it off and kind of kept my hand/forearm against my belly to stop the giggle (haha) when I walked. You could just ask your team if you could take it off, or just take it off and see how you feel. I slept in a recliner for the first few days because laying flat wasn't comfortable. After that, sleeping on my side was a bit uncomfortable after about a week (i think) I was back to normal and could sleep however I wanted.

    I DID IT !

Decided a couple months back to try to drop a few more pounds. My weight had been fairly stable, between 172 and 175 for the last two years. As you can tell, I take my time, and after losing a couple pounds, I take a break and just maintain that weight loss. Losing the weight isn't the issue for me, but maintaining is. My weight is now between 168 and 170. Maybe not a huge difference; but for me.... I do not remember being in the 160's since college.... and that was like 1977..... so now at 66 years old, and a dozen years post VSG; I am down over 150 pounds from my highest weight. Age does do odd stuff to the body. But still working 40 hours a week, gardening, have my hens and fruit trees and vegetable gardens.... Of course, I can't recall how to update my ticker..... will research some. Updated !!!
