FOUR WEEKS POST-OP TODAY - STILL STALLING
mama3beartn posted a blog entry in MAMA3BEARTN ---,---'@ WEIGHT LOSS JOURNEY
Four weeks today I did something that was to change me for the rest of my life. I had the Gastric Sleeve done at Centennial Hospital with Dr. Dyer on 07/17/2017. My highest weight was 315. I as of today weight 270.0. i never got my Day of Surgery weight, but I think it was 286. I have been on a roller coaster stall for a couple weeks now. I've read this is common but it can still be frustrating, especially since I'm only four weeks out and already hitting one. It seemed to happen when I changed stages and the problems with Constipation started. I was worried also about changing stages a little early may of caused the stall. I did stage one, good. But I did stage two like a week and then moved to pureed stage 3 early. I was getting so nausea's on the shakes. So I added the pureed stuff a little early. I'll admit I'm not good at pureeing the foods. I just chew chew chew till it's pureed in my mouth or eat already soft stuff like eggs, cottage cheese and yogurt. No problems with anything yet, well still no jello and anything strong mint, like toothpaste.... it makes me nausea. Not sure why. But doing good with everything else. I'm still under 500 cal a day. I'm going to start my food journal this week as well as measurements. I was told this can help see any bad trends I might need to nip in the butt and make sure it truly is under 500. Its so hard when labels state 1 cup 200 cal, but you only eat 3 T. Hard to calculate. Still have trouble with the Anal Fissure. Fibers and stool Softener help, but like I had mentioned. Normal stool even for me is not fun. Going to have to go to a specialist and have this looked into more. Really don't want to go through another surgery right now. Not cool - nope nope. Any others who stalled early on? Love to hear your advice. Hope everyone is doing well in Bariatric Land. I'll let y'all know how the week goes. I have my follow up next week so can't wait for that. Lots of questions. Later Gaters -

Thank you. I am still unable to tolerate a lot of food so I mainly stick to protein, protein and more protein. That would be in the forms of lean meats turkey, chicken, steak, light yogurt, 2% milk and cheese ( have become a little lactose intolerant so I don't do much of these. I will occasionally be able to get some veggies in as well but not that often as I still cannot eat much in one sitting. However I too have gone through stalls and the key is listening to your body if it is telling you that it is starving for something do it but in moderation. I sometimes had to break my stalls by incorporating some bread carbs because my body was starving for it but I don't tolerate it to well so it is very spring but it kicks me out of my stalls when I have them. I do walk around 5 miles a day and do hip hop fitness 3x's a week. But again all of our bodies respond to different things so be sure to listen to your tool if it tells you that it is full stop if you don't have those triggers then measure out portions that are recommended by your nutritionist and remember the sleeve is there to help but it doesn't by any means do all of the work for you. If you have any other questions feel free to ask. I hope this helps. -
First day on soft solids Not Good

And I would think that broccolli would also be a bit difficult on the stomach at this stage. It took me a while to eat many different veggies. Yogurt, cottage cheese, that sort of thing are perfect for now. In fact, you should try the ricotta bake! I got the recipe on this web site but don't remember who exactly. Baked Ricotta with Marinara This is the one that everyone RAVES about! 8 oz of ricotta cheese ½ cup grated Parmesan 1 large egg, beaten 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning Salt & pepper to taste ½ cup marinara sauce ½ cup shredded mozzarella cheese Mix ricotta cheese, parmesan, beaten egg, seasonings together and place in a oven proof dish. Pour marinara on top and top with mozzarella cheese. Bake it in the oven @ 450 for about 20-25 minutes (best) or nuke it till hot and bubbly. -

Eating meals
SouthernGirl76 replied to SouthernGirl76's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
No decrease in the amount it's been like that since they introduced eggs. Yogurt and cottage cheese are fine and I measure out around 3 ounces for those. I feel like I'm a being paranoid but really don't know. -
Sooo, just as an update, I am still sick. It has been 1 year and 8 months since my car accident(s). My go specialist has diagnosed me with IBS. I still don't believe that this is the issue. I was given dice yep and baclofen and it actually made the pain worse. I am so tired of people telling me that I am "constipated". However, that said I take polyethylene glycol almost daily which softens stool, but it still takes about 9-10 days for food to pass. I am still maintaining my weight, but not losing. How is this possible. My highest known weight was 340 pounds and I currently weigh 163 pounds. So I guess that is still a win. My family doctor agrees that I likely have vagus nerve damage, but I feel like something is still missing. It really doesn't make sense. Yesterday, I ate 1/2 c yogurt and 1/8 cup meat. That is it. My pain has improved a bit, such that I am not dying after eating. I have been on tramadol tid for almost 2 years now. After doing more research, I am planning to speak with my family physician about the possible late complication of rny of candy cane roux syndrome. I have never heard of this before. But I have all of the symptoms. This however may not be the answer, because I cannot verify how long my roux blind limb is, if at all. But I would be even open to having surgery to remove more of my small intestine to just "see". It is so hard because almost 2 years ago I was running marathons and loved my life. Although my surgery was not easy, it made my life better. 1 month after my car accident my life became unlivable. Last november I was very low mentally. I have survived that, and am hopeful I will get better. It has improved my nursing practice amazingly. Unfortunately I don't feel like my coworkers can count on me. I have called in sick because of pain more in the last year than I have in my entire life combined. I have spent most of my time in bed and my muscles have atrophied. I work and stay in bed. The only thing that got me out of my depression in November was my husband and dog. I have lost a lot of friends, and am still mourning that loss. I am determined, I will figure this out. I will find out what is wrong with me and I will let you know as I know. I know this is vagus nerve damage, which was worsened by all my abdominal surgeries (4 surgeries now). I know the car accident caused abdominal trauma. I know I have slow sluggish bowels, but i am not "constipated". The slow bowels, the persistent nausea and post-prandial pain, constant fullness, may be related to poor peristalsis of my manipulated bowels. I will keep you posted, because I do not want someone to go through what I have.

Hard boiled eggs or edamame and garbanzo bean salad. Soups in a thermos. Yogurt frozen before you pack it. If you can stomach it at the point chicken salad made with plain Greek yogurt or smashed avacodo. HW-292 • SW (6/29/17) 256.6 • CW 230.2

vbg Possible Revision from VBG
Joey Cee posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I had a Vertical Banded Gastroplasty in 1994. I have had problems over the years that have been increasing as the time goes by such as Acid reflux, vomiting, severe abdominal pain followed by massive diarrhea and lately, constant pain in my stomach area behind the rib cage. I can't eat anything solid now and keep it down so I am on protein shakes and yogurt to get my nutrition. have an appointment with my primary care physician on Wednesday for this reason and am wondering if she will order an endoscopy or should I suggest it. I am worried about the possible damage that the surgery may have caused but I need to know. hate the thought of being on a liquid diet for the rest of my life. Has anyone else had the VBG and needed a revision? What were your symptoms? Am I just being paranoid? -
What do you wish you did before surgery??
Diana_in_Philly replied to lk2813's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
My before pictures were in a t-shirt and workout leggings. I did not keep any of the size 22 pants but I have some 2XL shirts still- I sleep in them. But I'm almost 1 year out and I drink wine and every once and a while I have a slice of pizza. I stocked up on what I needed for post op according to my plan - which in my first 2 weeks was full liquids - greek yogurt, creamed soups, protein drinks, Vitamin Water Zero, Crystal Light, Fairlife Milks, protein powder, sugar free jello and pudding, sugar free popsicles and fudgesicles. I made sure I had enough stuff to make dinners for my family on hand so I didn't have to go to the grocery store. -
IT GETS BETTER!! It really does. So first advice I have for you is remember that. I'm now 16 days post op and feel great. The second week was better than the first for me, but I still struggled to get my liquids and protein in and got tired easily. Have you tried introducing some savory liquids? Try unjury chicken soup if you're still on clear liquids, or if you can do soups, do that (sometimes i mix in unjury chicken powder just to get more protein in). Also try to vary shakes a bit, and the time of day you have them. I drank them for breakfast everyday for 2 weeks. One day i couldnt even smell them. I switched to yogurt for breakfast, and soup for lunch, with protein water in between. I'd completement with the shakes at night if needed. That helped a lot!

Now I can't tolerate any shakes. The paleo shake I can do, but I have to dilute the heck out of it. I found a great alternative to shakes! 4 triple zero Oikos yogurts equals to 60 grams of protein. It coats the tummy and heals it with the probiotics. 🙂 Sent from my LGMS550 using BariatricPal mobile app

Sleeve and Hernia repair
gotime0810 replied to gotime0810's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Surgery and repair went well. Recovery is going well too. I had nausea right after surgery but it got better with a patch and oxygen. I only had ice chips and some broth the first day and moved to full liquid on Day 2. Drinking any liquid is challenging right now. I get cramps when I drink something but my doctor said that was normal. Yogurt and pudding with protein powder are what I'm using to get protein in. The gas pain is getting better each day. I'm hoping that I will feel almost 100% by Thursday when I go back to get my staples removed. -
I've started the pureed phase of my diet and I'm having a hard time incorporating protein unless it's a greek yogurt or protein shake. I can tolerate a scrambled egg, but that's about it. The thought of pureed meat grosses me out. I work in a nursing home and that's all I can think of. What can I do? I need more variety in my life. Sent from my SM-G930V using BariatricPal mobile app

Hi , Anyone out there done the 5 Day Re-Set program. I sure needed it. Mu surgery was on Oct. 12 2015. Start weight 268, pre-surg. 257, lowest after surgery 196, last 5 months up to 218, so a somewhat recent gain 22 LBS. I had gotten sloppy . Plain and simple. I was slowly letting sugar back in, breads. I really dont have much dumping. So that obviously can be good and bad. As you guys know, after like a year and a half, (well my experience) , you can eat then three hours later ....you could eat again. So to make a long story short....I tried the 5 Day Pouch Re-set. (you dont have to have a pouch- I don't even know what that really means) but the 5 Day Re-Set puts you back to eating the way you did your first 5 days out of surgery. You can lookit up , but basically Day 1& 2 liquids, protein drinks, diet jellos , puddings, veggie juices. Day 3 , add yogurts, soft tuna, eggs, cottage cheese. Day 4 more proteins added hamburger meat, chicken, etc. By then your carb cravings do decrease......and this starts to feel like your new normal way to eat again. Day 5 all proteins added back in. I am happy to say , I am not having cravings. I DO feel like this is my new normal to be back to having my protein shake, no- cal liquids, ( except I do make a tea with a bit of coffee mate and a splenda blend that has like 10 calories- Its like a low cal milk tea), yougurts, eggs, good proteins. It has returned my way of thinking to back when I was just a few months out of surgery. I am happy to say I am back down to 212 lbs. SO, a 6 lb. weight loss . If you have sort of gone off the rails a bit, try the 5 Day Pouch Re-set. I have to admit I tried it 2 X before and only lasted like one day. But when You really start drinking your water, a protein drink, and let your sleeve really work for you - and go back to basics, this really helped me out and put me back on the right track. Let me know of your experiences , if anyone has tried this. I am thinking I may do this once a month to keep me in check!!! I feel fantastic!! All the best to each and every one of YOU! Sheilzy

I was sleeved on the 7th and had a massive hernia repaired too. I was so nauseous day one in the hospital that I could barely walk. I'm now 6 days out and off my percoset (crushing it and trying to get it down was soooo horrible), and just trying to get my liquids in. The main reason I went off the pain meds is bc they would zonk me out and I'd sleep for hours instead of being awake and sipping fluids all day. I had a nonfat Greek yogurt yesterday with granulated monk fruit sweeter and that went down well. I too feel some pressure from liquids and then get odd sounds. I think a lot of us have trapped gas too. I've had some relief with gas x dissolvable strips. -
After Surgery Taste Issues
Sheilzee5 replied to shellyv0120's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi folks, If you were just sleeved in July it is still so NEW. everything simmers down believe me. For the first year, it is a whole new experience. I am now 1 year 10 months out. At around 1 year 2 months, ever since last Christmas, I realized I could eat EVERYTHING. Now we all know, it's not that we should eat everything. But if you are frustrated with weird tastes in your mouth, strange swallowing, sensations, it will get much much better. If anything I wish I still had a little more of the dumping sensations. Because of that I had gone up about 18 pounds. My stats are top weight 268, surg. weight 257, lowest weight 196 (total loss 72) , THEN back up to 218 , so actually a 22 lb. gain. What the Dr.s say Can definitely can happen. You get comfortable again about 1 1/2 year out. And can slowly start gaining from snacking, becoming sloppy with sugars, and breads. I was having some sugar, I had slowly started to have some bread......just regular food, when I went out to dinner , etc. I am happy to say I have just done the 5 - day re-set. That is like going back to the beginning and eating the same way for 5 days, liquids, , then liquids, and yogurt, diet jello's puddings, pureed foods, then every day adding a bit more soft protein, til at day five you are at liquids, proteins drinks, eggs, meats, etc. Happy to say the sleeve responds VERY well. Down 6 pounds now on day 5. Back to 212. Hallelujiah. I know I am back on the right road. The cravings are gone, back to eggs, yogurt, proteins, lots of fluids.....most important my head is back in the game and remembering what I did this all for. But just letting you all know, the first 6 months are for sure a time of everything re-adjusting, tastes coming back to normal. Also if you had a hiatal hernia while you had your sleeve done, it may take extra long a couple months for swallowing to feel normal , BUT IT WILL! Best of luck to all you Newbies. You got this!!! -
Cheese. Nuts. Jerky. Ostrim meat sticks. No sugar added Greek yogurt. Cottage cheese. Laughing cow cheese. Cold cuts, rolled up with cheese/cream cheese (some times I put cilantro or green onion or pickle in the middle, sometimes I grill) tuna salad, celery stuffed with peanut butter/cream cheese, turkey pepperoni, string cheese, hard boiled eggs, laughing cow cheese. Can you tell I like cheese?

Reaction to my whey powder? Best other protein?
Berry78 replied to GotProlactinoma's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
16oz of this has 40g protein. It is made with whey protein, but since it's cultured you may have better luck with it (I did). Keep in mind 2oz greek yogurt or cottage cheese = 1 cup of milk or broth. Since you are 3 weeks out, it won't be long before you've moved from liquids to food. Exciting times! -
Reaction to my whey powder? Best other protein?
GotProlactinoma replied to GotProlactinoma's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thanks for any help anyone has. I am going to try and drink bone broth today but even with some yogurt I won't make 60g any other plain protein powders that don't taste horrible? Anyone else ever get these almost allergic reactions to whey? I'm not allergic to dairy. -
After Surgery Taste Issues
BiancaP78 replied to shellyv0120's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was sleeved 8/1 and it's been an adjustment to finding things that don't taste gross. I think it is because we are in ketosis and have a constant salty metal taste in our mouths... my go to foods have been Greek yogurt, avocado, hummus, watermelon and mango. They seem to balance out the taste for me. I find that most creamy soups or broth based foods taste gross and I struggle with the pre-mixed protein shakes. -
Reaction to my whey powder? Best other protein?
GotProlactinoma posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm three weeks out. My main proteins are grass fed organic whey powder (no sugar no flavor) mixed with milk or water. Two days ago I started getting a dizzy nausea bad vision shaky feeling after just having a hand ful of sips of my protein drink. Been drinking it exactly the same two or three times a day since just after surgery so this reaction is new. I tested the milk, didn't give me that feeling. Tested the protein powder in water, yesterday, and got that same low blood sugar kind of reaction. Very unpleasant and started to give me the start of a migraine. anyone had this reaction to whey? Also why so out of the blue? AND HOW DO I GET ENOUGH PROTEIN? I have some nasty tasting pea protein, can try it. i also drink bone broth and 1 c has 9 g but I can't drink it all day. I also can eat the Greek yogurt, and mix it in vegetable juice. But not in quantity. I have also tried refried beans with success, but I am talking 1 oz at a time. I can't eat much soft food yet. -
My surgeon had me start on full liquids when I got home from the hospital yesterday. The list he gave me included grits, cream of wheat and mashed potatoes thinned. I keep picturing those tiny grit pieces getting stuck on my staple line. Is this a typical stage one diet or is it usually clear liquids only? I'm only 3 days post-op and am nervous about eating anything except broth, yogurt and water.

What to eat after your surgery because this diet is killing....
Apple1 replied to BiggSixxFizzle's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I didn't start puréed until week 3 and solids until4-5 weeks. Everyone has a different plan. I would stick to the plan your doc/nut gave you. Most of what you are feeling is called head hunger. A few ways to deal with it are to stay busy, walk, drink plenty of fluids, try different types of puréed foods. Cottage cheese, yogurt, scrambled eggs, creamed soups ect -

Dimples58 replied to BiggSixxFizzle's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm two weeks 2 days out and was cleared today by my surgeon to start solid foods. I know the feeling...eating soups and yogurt just wasn't my thing. You should be able to introduce solids to your diet by now.
