Mentally starving!
Berry78 replied to Nursesmiley's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Huh.. the chew and spit usually happens preop.... Use this as a warning about the strength of head hunger and how it impacts you. If this continues past the first month or so, you will want some counseling. No judgement coming from me.. this whole journey is TOUGH, and sometimes we may need a bit of help. Once you move on to purees and soft foods, it should get much better In the meantime, try making homemade broth.. that will give you a break from all the sweet shakes. Liquid yogurt and kefir might be a nice change of pace too. Herbal tea comes in a ton of different flavors as well. -
Thankful yet stalled and scared

I totally get longing for weight loss to be faster. I'm a slow loser so at 6 months post op I'm down 47 pounds. The first 30 came off the first 6 weeks. As long as the scale is going in the right direction I feel good about it. I haven't gained at all but I have had numerous and lengthy stalls. I try to get 60-100g of protein and 25-50 carbs a day. I keep most days at 25 carbs but a couple days I may go over so I gave myself a range. I still drink one protein shake a day because I have great restriction and can not eat much. Sample meal: Breakfast One egg 1 piece whole grain toast - I grind my wheat and make my bread to it's pretty clean and really my only major carb for the day. sometimes a small piece of fruit or berries Coffee (Instead of creamer I use caramel flavored Premier Protein shake) Snack Love me a tablespoon of Almond Butter right from the jar or Cheesestick wrapped in ham Lunch Salmon Salad on a lettuce leaf (I live in Alaska so this is abundant) but canned from the store would work great too. or Grilled chicken breast cut in strips with a bit of ceasar dressing rolled up in a lettuce leaf Snack Protein Shake, handful of almonds, or pork rinds with hummus (gross I know but I love it!!) Dinner I cook for my family and eat a small portion of whatever they are having except I will serve myself by picking around major carbs. So Meat, veggie and starch... (Example: Pork Chop, Green Beans and Rice). I'll eat the pork chop and green beans but skip on the rice Evening snack If I've gotten all my protein I'll have three tablespoons of ice cream, if not, I'll have a greek yogurt -
One Week Post Op - Things I'm Grateful For
SandraD_PDX posted a topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
It's been an interesting week, full of new things learned, ups and downs, and lots of introspection. The following made my life so much easier this week, and I'm so grateful for them: 1. This site. I did a lot of research on this site prior to surgery date, so my home was prepared for post-op. The grocery lists on this site were so helpful. Having a community of folks who supported me was amazing. I received messages from people that I just met, who wished me well. It is such a good feeling to have this kind of support! And I really appreciate the authenticity of folks who share. There hasn't been an emotion I've felt that someone else hasn't described, an issue with gas, hunger, food, etc. that hasn't been covered. It's so nice to know I'm not alone. And those before and after pics!! Keep them coming, it's so inspiring to see that weight loss! 2. My husband. I'm almost always grateful for my husband because he's an awesome guy, but man, has he stepped up even more. He got right on this "let's be healthy" bandwagon and is changing his eating habits right along with me. He uses his fitbit and My Fitness Pal to track his steps and his calories. He's even learned how to cook with Kale! He's really putting his passion into this for us, and I just love him for it. He's not left my side at all, he would bring me my plate of 1 oz sippy cups with protein shakes and vita water and document my liquid intake. He tracked my meds and made sure I got them all in on time. He stops whatever he's doing to take walks with me when I'm ready to walk. He's held my hand through this whole process. He's my biggest cheerleader. I love that man more than air. 3. Unjury Chicken Soup Flavor Protein Powder. Thank you BP community for this hint! I love having something warm and savory to sip at night. 4. Unjury protein power in Sugar Free Jello and Sugar and Fat Free Pudding. So awesome. I ran out of the unflavored, so used the strawberry sorbet with raspberry SF Jello and it was really good. Used the chocolate powder in chocolate pudding - that was a little rich, maybe vanilla next time. 5. Oikos Triple Zero Greek Yogurt. This just showed up in my market, perfect timing. 6. My Fitness Pal - such an easy way to track fluid, calories, protein and steps. It synchs with my Fitbit, so all of my info is in one place. My Withings scale also synchs to MFP, so I don't even have to manually add my weigh-ins. I love simplicity. 7. Protein2O protein water in the coconut/pineapple flavor, just like a pina colada! Only 1 carb. Delicious. Items 3,4, and 7 came from this site, which leads me back to #1. I'm just so thankful BP is here. -

How long did your surgeon tell you to be on the 4-5 shakes a day, sf yogurt, pudding, jello, broth and one meal a day of your choice. I too am trying to get back on track from gaining 50 pounds. I am going to try this starting today. Also I am going back to 800 calories a day. Thanks -
2-3 weeks out, beginning soft solids
mytime4me replied to GotProlactinoma's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am right there with you, I was sleeved on the 28th and just starting soft foods today. So far I was able to get yogurt in but I think I had too much - I had stabbing pains in my back with the last few bites. I guess that's my stomach's new way of saying STOPPPPPPPPPPPP. I am finding it hard to get enough fluids and protein in, while trying to eat every few hours. My NUT wanted us to go to 1 protein shake a day (ISO 2) when we start soft foods but there is no way I can do that - I would be so short protein. Today is really the first day I had the stamina to take a 30 min walk. I am hoping that in a few days with some more calories and protein I will have more energy to start moving! -
I could sleep on my left side about 2 days ago, my right is still a wee tender, but I'm off the meds....and seemed to slide from pain to hurt/uncomfortable today. I turned a corner! I have a class this week to talk about stage 3/4 foods next. Pureed foods, here I come! By the way, the multi-vitamins...blech/taste wise, but I coat my tongue in yogurt first to dull the taste. It's fine. They'll help keep me healthy, so I'll deal until I use these up and try a different flavor.

2-3 weeks out, beginning soft solids
sleevedshereen replied to GotProlactinoma's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was sleeved on the 14th of July. I've been able to eat like cooked salmon, scrambled eggs, boiled chicken, refried beans, string cheese, greek yogurt, meatballs and really soft stuff. I have noticed that my stomach can't tolerate sharp cheddar cheese because anytime I have put that on beans or eggs to melt...i get a pain in my stomach...Also, I need to remember to slow down and take smaller bites because when I don't, I get these painful cramping things in my stomach...its like a few stabbing pains like my stomach letting me know it didnt like it and then it goes away a minute or two after. I am not drinking nearly enough liquids as I should and not getting enough protein in. I've been at a stall for a week and ahalf. I need to be better about my liquids and protein and walk more. -
Dude, I can't wait to add yogurt- still on shakes and water for another 9 days ugh. Not vits till then either. But I feel funny too, not quite right- but so much better than last week. I think getting to the pureed stage, losing the incisions patches, and being able to sleep on my side- that will be the end of the worst of it for me! I also want to quit the pain and nauseau meds but I'm afraid of how bad it might be!

South Beach Diet Phase 1

Wooohoooo! Look at you staring down a craving!!! Congrats! That's really a BIG deal, you know?! Um...I do sf choco puddin'! You should get some popsicle molds! You can even use ice cube trays and cover them with aluminum foil. Then when they are partially frozen, you can shove popsicle sticks into them. Then just pour 2-3 oz of premiere protein into each mold and freeze it. I know they (PP) have recipes for pops, just can't remember if there are any other ingredients other than the protein drink? I know you can add things like yogurt, etc. That way, you make only the size you need and they have some redeeming quality to them! LOL. Right? So you are SOOO right to not do the chocolate if it's a gateway drug. Dr. Stephen Phinney, one of the authors of The Art and Science of Low Carb Living said in an interview that each cheat sets up back, metabolically, something like 5 weeks. That puts a whole nother spin on cheating doesn't it? Five. Weeks. *gulp* *sob* If that doesn't scare someone straight, I don't know what will? ha! -
You're eventually going to hate "protein" bars. And they can be heavy and loaded with sugar. Look into jerky, cheese and greek yogurt so you can add protein to your diet.

Smoothie and shake work arounds- sick of boring protein shakes??
xoxococojay posted a topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
So i have always been a lover of smoothies and milkshakes, they were always my guilty pleasure. But i got sick of basic super boring protein shakes. And for some reason premier protein doesn't blend well for a smoothie either. So this is what i found.... (I realize now after writing this that there's a recipe sharing section, so screw it lol) 1) i'm in love with starbucks caramel frappuccinos and macchiatos. Anything caramel coffee flavor i'm seriously obsessed with.... so i discovered this -scoop of syntrax latte caramel macchiatto with fair life fat free milk (it is lactose free). You can add a tbs of international delight sugar free caramel macchiato creamer to it if needed but it should be sweet enough. I've also done this recipe with premier vanilla RTD shake instead of milk and both ways are amazing!!!! If you use fair life fat free milk you end up with 36g of protein. If you use premier with it you end up with 53g of protein per serving. (If it's to sweet or to heavy just add a few tbs of water to your shaker bottle) 2) for oreo milkshake or chickfila milkshake lovers Do the same thing but sub syntrax protein for GNC pro whey powder in cookies and cream. It's heaven. 3) smoothie lovers- i tend to make smoothies all the time in my ninja. But i ended up with a ton of premier shakes and i wanted to do something with them. I was getting bored. So my friend suggested using flavored greek yogurt (oikos tripple zero, which i hate, fage greek or chobani all work fine) and premier in a shaker cup or blender bottle and mix well. It kind of taste more like a fruity milkshake to me, but it's yummy too! Works out to 43g of protein per serving. (Don't use a blender for this, premier doesn't blend well) I hope this helps anyone struggling with their liquid diet phase or anyone that just likes smoothies and shakes. Happy tuesday!! -

I just dont understand how my body was used to the liquids and now putting more in my tummy wont i gain weight??? -
I am 19 months post op, and I have to say the last couple of months have been extremely difficult food wise. I am pretty much ALWAYS feeling hungry and I am losing the battle on the nighttime munching and eating! The feeling is really acute at night when I am supposed to be going to bed, I try drinking water and waiting but that isn't working anymore. When I do cave and give in to the feeling I do try to stick with a high protein food and something that is healthy, yogurt or cheese and fruit, sometimes though this isn't enough. I just don't know what to do. I've had my labs done recently and they all came back normal except for my vitamin D (extremely deficient), and my para-thyroid hormone had dropped some but I am no where near deficient for that. I am just frustrated and stressing out about this. In the last few months I have regained about five pounds, which I know is normal but is not what I want to be doing. Does anyone have any tips or suggestions for how to beat the late night hunger monster?

Cut Calories and Excercise and no weight loss
bwillia08 replied to bwillia08's topic in Fitness & Exercise
I did have insulin resistance! Which is why she started me on metformin. So I shouldn't be eating oatmeal at all or the veggie pasta? I thought it wasn't really a carb because it was made out of veggies. 😩 I was eating those two things because I felt too weak at the gym only eating protein. I'll cut the oatmeal and veggie pasta for a week and try only salads then maybe? Any other recommendations? I try to stay away from dairy since I'm lactose intolerant and I don't really eat yogurt. So any recommendations I'd love! Thank you. -
How many ounces do you eat per day and how far out?
hmills653 replied to dreamingsmall's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
9 weeks now. I have a protein bar or 2 eggs for breakfast. Sting cheese or fruit for snack. 2 oz meat lunch. Greek yogurt or string cheese for snack. 2 oz meat dinner or maybe veggie and not finish all of meat. -
Surgery went well. I got to add a bit of greek yogurt today, which was wonderful! I'm uploading another video, but I'm not sure how often I'll do them. I feel funny. I guess I'll get used to it. How are you making out? Added my chewable calcium today. Will take my vitamins tonight with my 6:00 meal. Didn't want to do them on an empty stomach, so shifted the times. I'm using Celebrate vitamins. The orange calcium isn't too bad...crossing my fingers I can tolerate the multi's tonight!

How many ounces do you eat per day and how far out?
PAstudent replied to dreamingsmall's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
3 months out and I'm finding my stomach's capacity erratic. I've had up to 5 ounces (by weight) of dense food like steak or chicken and 5 ounces (by volume) of things like yogurt and felt totally fine, possibly could have more but don't want to push it. But, I've also had meals lately where I've only had 2 ounces (by weight) of food and felt totally full (even though I hadn't eaten in hours). -
Current vegetarian- don't want to do keto diet postop.
makemyownluck replied to smooshycheeks's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
There are vegan options for shakes, but I haven't tried them. I found this list on google, from PETA https://www.peta.org/living/food/pump-workouts-vegan-protein-powder/ It looks like it could be helpful. I think your biggest challenge if vegan is the immediate post op stage where most people rely on shakes, cottage cheese, yogurt, jello, etc to get through the healing part, so you may have to be just vegetarian and allow the dairy in your diet to make it through. Once you're over that, you should be able to choose a diet you want with more veggies as your food source, but use tofu and non-dairy protein shakes to meet your protein goals. Most post op people are on a keto diet because, well, it works! And aside from the high fat intake (which isn't necessary for post-op bariatric patients because it's function is to aid in satiety in non-surgical folks, and is a LIMIT, not a GOAL), the protein and carb requirements are in line with what we need anyway. So it helps to follow keto in the sense that the keto community offers great meal ideas that keep the carbs in check and don't use added sugars. -

Make at home Protein Shakes
Missy161 replied to rayb70's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Go on Pinterest and search. I have a mutts ninja and just put that in my search and found a ton of recipes. I usually just trial and error it though - some Greek yogurt a few berries a scoop of protein powder some ice a little milk or juice and whip it up- less is more or you'll have so much leftover! My kids love them too. Mich W Hw 223, SW 217 CW 194 GW 135 -
Thanks for that suggestion!!! I will def be trying that. I miss yogurt! I currently took the dive & having some mashed potatoes bc I have literally been getting in maybe 100-200 calories and every time I get up I get blurry vision and dizzy. Have been wanting yogurt and I was already an avid fairlife milk fan. Thank ya'll!!!! Today seems like a better day

The triple zero yogurt is the only one I can tolerate out of the regular sf brands because it has no artificial sweeteners. I tried yoplait 100 and it made me so sick- realized I don't tolerate sugar alcohols hardly at all. So glad the triple zero comes in great flavors! Mich W Hw 223, SW 217 CW 194 GW 135
