  1. I know part of my weight issue is that I have been on antidepressants for 20 years. I have always taken SSRIs which are known to cause weight gain. My surgeon recommended that I change my medication to something else. Has anyone else changed from Prozac, Zoloft, Effexor, etc to something else due to this side effect - and if so, what medications seem to be better in this regard?

  3. I'm so excited and scared and irritated all at the same time. I know this is the best/last choice for me but I'm so scared at how much I'm letting my LOVE for food affect my judgement! I wouldn't say I am an emotional eater although I am getting emotional about eating lol. But food itself is a passion for me. I always told my self I wanted to go to culinary school but a baby at 18 to support and then more weight gain then my PCOS returned with a vengeance. baby number 2 came and it never happened. So my love of cooking is now focused on my 2 children and boyfriend and the togetherness it brings my family! I want so badly to escape this tomb of a body I'm in.... Why is this so hard?! I know I will with out a doubt have this surgery granted I full fill all requirements and insurance allows. I just wish my brain would get on board with my heart

    NuvaRing?

I haven't had the sleeve yet, but I am on my second Mirena. LOVE it! Didn't really notice much weight gain from that.
  5. thanks for the update.....can you give some specifics on the post-4cc band weight gain? I haven't heard much over the years about how a deBanded person transitions back to the old Bad Eating Habits. That's of concern in my own overeating history....'knowing better yet proceeding anyway'.... cheers on your new journey
  6. Surprising side effects of dehydration 3 days ago, Reluctantly Healthy In this episode "Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition" trainers and life coaches Chris and Heidi Powell educate host Judy Greer on the importance of staying hydrated. A huge plus for hydration, Judy says, is that it helps prevent wrinkles. But another unflattering side effect of dehydration is weight gain, Chris and Heidi caution. Even mild dehydration can slow down your metabolism by as much as 3%. Ninety percent of Americans are chronically dehydrated, and the body often misinterprets thirst for hunger. The effects are far from skin-deep: Lack of water is the #1 trigger for daytime fatigue and headaches. What's the best temperature for your water? It depends, Chris says. If you want to hydrate yourself quickly drink it cold. But if you want to fill up and suppress your appetite, choose warm because it stays in your system longer and expands the stomach, sending a signal to your brain that you're "full." Watch for more of Chris and Heidi's tips on hydration, including how to use your body weight to determine how much you should drink daily. http://screen.yahoo.com/surprise-side-effects-dehydration-050000603.html

    Is Sugar Toxic?

I do believe that sugar is toxic for us....Here is an article I thought you might like to read and give your opinion on..... Your Brain on Sugar It gives you a rush, messes with your mind, and always leaves you wanting more - and now researchers are calling for the government to regulate the sweet stuff like a drug. Is sugar worse for you than, say, cocaine? According to a 2012 article in the journal Nature, it's a toxic substance that should be regulated like tobacco and alcohol. Researchers point to studies that show that too much sugar (both in the form of natural sucrose and high-fructose corn syrup) not only makes us fat, it also wreaks havoc on our liver, mucks up our metabolism, impairs brain function, and may leave us susceptible to heart disease, diabetes, even cancer. So far, no federal action has been taken (advocates blame industry lobbyists), and experts say simply raising awareness isn't enough, especially when 80 percent of our food choices contain sugar. "It's like watching a train wreck in slow motion," says coauthor Laura Schmidt, Ph.D., a researcher at the University of California, San Francisco. Nevertheless, after the shock of hearing the news, many of us shrugged and turned back to our cupcakes. Yet, truth is, women in their 20s and 30s may already be feeling the effects of too much sugar without even realizing it. Here, the most common sugar-induced issues and how to beat them to prevent long-term damage—and feel your best right now. STRESS EATING For a pick-me-up, you may feel the urge to inhale a bag of M&M's or scarf down a box of Cookies. But the impulse goes deeper. To examine the hold sugar can have over us, substance-abuse researchers have performed brain scans on subjects eating something sweet. What they've seen resembles the mind of a drug addict: When tasting sugar, the brain lights up in the same regions as it would in an alcoholic with a bottle of gin. Dopamine—the so-called reward chemical—spikes and reinforces the desire to have more. (Sugar also fuels the calming hormone serotonin.) THE FIX In times of stress, dieters are more likely to binge, studies conclude. That said, a cookie once in a while (say, twice a week) is fine, but on most days go for oatmeal with brown sugar, suggests Jeffrey Fortuna, Ph.D., a health and behavior lecturer at California State University, Fullerton. The whole grains fill you up and the sweetness is just enough to release serotonin. INEXPLICABLE WEIGHT GAIN You stay away from burgers and drink diet soda. But sugar—both real and artificial—is the secret saboteur. When the pancreas senses sugar, the body releases insulin, which causes cells in the liver, muscle, and fat tissue to take up glucose from the blood, storing it as glycogen for energy. Eat too much at once, though, and insulin levels spike, then drop. The aftermath? You feel tired, then crave more sustenance to perk up. Faux sugars don't help. "Artificial sweeteners travel to the part of the brain associated with desire but not to the part responsible for reward," says Dr. Gene-Jack Wang, a researcher at Brookhaven National Laboratory in Upton, New York. Nor do they trigger the release of the satiety hormones that real sugar does, so you're more likely to consume more calories. THE FIX Feed sweet cravings with fruit (the Fiber will help keep insulin in check), and sub in sparkling Water for diet soda. If you must indulge, go for a small snack made with real sugar, and eat slowly. Add fruit or yogurt to feel fuller and prevent a crash. BRAIN FOG Blanking out in the middle of a meeting? Research out of the University of California, Los Angeles, suggests that sugar forms free radicals in the brain's membrane and compromises nerve cells' ability to communicate. This could have repercussions in how well we remember instructions, process ideas, and handle our moods, says Fernando Gómez-Pinilla, Ph.D., author of the UCLA study. THE FIX Stay under the USDA limit of 10 teaspoons (40 grams) of added sugar a day. Read labels and available nutrition information at chains: A 16-ounce Starbucks vanilla latte and Einstein Bros. bagel will max out your day's allotment! A wiser choice: black coffee and plain yogurt with antioxidant-rich blueberries and walnuts, sweetened with honey. AGING SKIN Sugar causes premature aging, just as cigarettes and UV rays do. With young skin (generally under 35), when skin support structures collagen and elastin break down from sun or other free-radical exposure, cells repair themselves. But when sugar travels into the skin, its components cause nearby amino acids to form cross-links. These cross-links jam the repair mechanism and, over time, leave you with premature wrinkles. THE FIX Once cross-links form, they won't unhitch, so keep sugar intake to as close to zero as you can. "It's the enemy," says Dr. William Danby, a dermatologist with Dartmouth Medical School in New Hampshire. Avoid soda and processed pastries and trade sugar packets for cinnamon—it slows down cross-linking, as do cloves, oregano, ginger, and garlic. A SLUGGISH WORKOUT Muscles need sugar for fuel, so carbs (which break up into glucose, a type of sim-ple sugar) can kick-start your morning jog. But fruit or prepackaged Snacks touting "natural sweeteners" contain just fructose, which is metabolized in the liver, not the muscles. The result: bloat, or even the runs. THE FIX A glucose-packed snack with just 4 to 8 grams of fructose—it'll help increase glucose absorption, says Dr. Richard Johnson, professor of medicine at the University of Colorado, Denver. Try a sports drink like Gatorade or trail mix with dried fruit an hour before your workout.

    Counting calories

All I know is, thanks to the band, I eat a heck of a lot less than what I used to....and that is what it took....eating less, (lot less), exercise daily = good steady weight loss until there is no more to loose...equilibrium achieved. Only once in my journey did I not loose weight, gained actually, and that was during my 2nd month...and there was no doubt I knew I was eating too much, not having any restriction....and my Dr. reassured me, not to get very upset, and we will take care of that, and that being his / our goal.... (I have not lost any weight in well over 1-1/2 years, but that's another story)

    Beware of the UN-fill !!!

i got the lapband because i was fat/lazy and overate huge amounts of fast foods, chips etc...i feel once a person accepts what the problem is, they can fix it. i do not have any fills *just a starting primer at surgery and i have no idea how much* but i do watch my caloric intake and try to eat better foods...and i feel is someone gains (65 pounds after a fill), they overate/drank more calories than their bodies burned off and hence the weight gain...i can say this and its true because i did not get over 300+ by dieting.....that being said, you stated you were a success, excuse me, you still are.... so to lose weight, do what you and everyone who has the band is suppose to do...eat better foods in the allotted amounts (stopping at 20 min mark) and let the band control the quantity..i understand fills help with the controlling the quantity......and because you can eat more then the 1 cup (or whatever your dr recommends) doesnt mean you should...that goes for whether someone has the sleeve or band or ds or bypass..you drink/eat more calories than you burn off and you WILL gain weight. again, BEST of luck to you. hope it truly works out.

    Backhanded Compliment from Husband?!

Thank you to all. I don't think I would have gotten so upset if he hadnt already said some rude things. Before surgery he said,"How on earth do you expect this to work? How are you going to keep the weight off? How did you gain so much to begin with?! If you're hungry all the time you're just going to gain it all back." When he met me I was about 30 pounds lighter than I am today. When we were dating he cheated on me several times with much older women. But I forgave him and we got married anyways. Ever since being diagnosed with Bipolar and having to be on all these meds with horrible weight gain side effects I gained a lot of weight. I've never been this big before. I'm proud of my weight loss and I know I will get back in shape. It just makes me so sad how cold he is. It's obvious he's not attracted to me. I guess I can't help but want to wow him and shock him with the new me. But another part feels like I shouldn't have to go to those lengths for him. He doesn't give a crap what I think about him.

    Backsliding due to divorce

First....HUUUUUUUUUGGGGG!!! You will get through this. YOU WILL. I did, and so will you. My divorce and the mess leading up to it is a huge factor in my weight gain. Do what you can to avoid this. It will only make you more unhappy, and unhappy with yourself. I don't know what circumstances are leading to the divorce, but mine was messy and I almost ended my life over it. It wasn't until I realized that this IS a new start, and i am no longer controlled/manipulated/emotionally abused by another, unloving person. Set a day that will be your RESTART. Not only should you change your diet that day, but start thinking about yourself differently. You are free to be you, to better you, and to find people who will life you up (and vice versa). But start with YOU. Focus on you and your needs. Don't fuss with the finding a date and such. That will come when you have emotionally healed. If you don't want to go out on a date a friend set you up with, then DON'T. You need to be emotionally ready for dating. So smack a friend if you have to. I did. She finally got the point. Also, you have us to lean on...sort of. Good for you for asking for help and encouragement. Trust me, hiding everything away is not very healthy. So message me if you need to. I'll be here. Take heart. Read my signature, and what Christopher Robin says to Pooh Bear. This truly did help me get through all the pain of my broken marriage and divorce...and another woman who went through the same things gave it to me. It had helped her too.

    Birth Control Problems!

I just went to my obgyn on Monday and she put me back on NuvaRing. Didn't want to do an IUD because I haven't had children and didn't want to do Depo because of weight gain. I have taken NuvaRing before and she thought that was the best option for me post surgery. HW 344, DOS 320, Surgery Date 2/20/13, CW 279.8 Sent from my iPad using RNYTalk

    stay filled or unfill?

I am 23 weeks along an had to be emptied at 16 weeks due to a nasty virus with some severe vomiting. My surgeon said that although I hadn't had the morning sickness is was unwise to stay filled due to moving organs. As the baby grows and organs get pushed up, so too does the band and pressure on the band is well, no bueno. It can cause a slip in some cases. My weight gain was normal to that point. I'm now reaching the Mac what I "should" gain the entire pregnancy (I was 127 pre preg. Gain should only be 25-35 pounds total and I'm up 26 so far). ::sigh:: we lost it before, we will lose it again!!!!!!

    Birth Control Problems!

I have the mirena. No weight gain. No migraines. Don't have to think about it for five years. Love it. Just had my second one put in.
  18. I'm so sorry about your family's challenges and about this frustration. Your body sounds very metabolically efficient like mine is. So many people say that increasing calories works for them, and I have tried it, but my body rebels with immediate and sustained weight gain if I go over 800 calories or so. I am hypothyroid, but I think it's also bc of years of very low calorie diets and also just how my body is made (my mom says if there were a famine, we would be stepping over the dead bodies). Your weight loss does give me hope. It sounds like you have done very well, though I know it must be incredibly frustrating to be in the home stretch and to be having so many issues with slow loss and easy regain. I am 12 weeks out and have lost about 50 pounds--30 lbs since surgery and about 20 lbs during a 6-month pre-op diet. Have a long way to go so it's helpful to see what others who are farther out are doing. I'm sorry that there don't seem to be any easy answers. Wishing you the best.
  19. I got my surgery on march 25 2013 I gained 2 pounds I can not stop eating I don't feel full at all I go for my first fill on may 9
  20. While I do worry about weight gain years later, possible leaks right after surgery, the pain you experience right after surgery and the struggles post op. My biggest concern actually has to do with the staple line. What happens 25-30 years from now? Is there is a leak risk many many years later? I know that the sleeve hasn't been around that long and so there isn't any way to know for sure, but that is my biggest fear, that something many years later could go wrong. With that said though, I don't think that fear will keep me from going forward and getting the gastric sleeve. I'm pretty sure I could lose the weight without the sleeve but my biggest problem that I've always had has been keeping the weight off and actually I've always gained more weight than I have started with each time I do lose weight. I want/need to stop that cycle.

    Beware of the UN-fill !!!

Over the last three years I've had multilple fills and unfills. I've never had any of those problems after an unfill. I've had more weight gain from being too tight than from having an unfill. When you post a thread like this, you make an unfill sound like a death sentence to the band. This is not an accurate representation. Sorry the band didnt work out for you, but scaring newbies about having an unfill isn't playing fair.
  22. DELETE THIS ACCOUNT!

    Beware of the UN-fill !!!

I've had two unfills and never experienced any of those side effects. As far as "rapid weight gain", that only happens if you start eating more than you should be. The band itself doesn't make you lose weight or gain weight. The band simply allows you to be satisfied on less food for longer periods of time. Whether you lose or gain weight depends entirely on how much you eat.
  23. Ok, we've all been there...You go and get a fill and they give you all of these specific instructions on what to eat and what not to eat. They make you drink Water before you leave to make sure you're not completely shut off, etc etc.. But what about if you get it loosened? They don't tell you what THAT'S gonna be like!! So here's a list of the potential side effects for having an UN-fill (I wish I would've known before I had my band loosened): - Gas - Bloating, water retention - Diarrhea or constipation.. or diarrhea followed by constipation followed by diarrhea - More gas and bloating - Hunger - RAPID WEIGHT GAIN!!!!! And I mean RAPID, even if you're watching what u eat!!! So what do we Banders do?? We go back and get a fill, right???? And another fill, and another fill.. But guess what!! THERE'S NO GOING BACK!! It's that "green-zone" everyone talks about. If u get to your green-zone, then don't mess with it!! Unfortunately, I did mess w it. And after 3 more fills in my 10 yr old band, I'm up 65 pounds in about 6 months. So I gave up.. had my band removed last month and in 3 weeks I'm getting the Sleeve. Anyone else have this happen???

I take Prilosec intermittently for reflux. It works beautifully, but it does block the absorption of some B Vitamins. I never heard anything about weight gain, nor have I experienced it. But when I do take the drug, I make sure & add B complex to my Vitamin regimen. For people with chronic reflux, taking Omeprazole (generic Prilosec) can save someone from permanent damage to the esophagus, and possibly even cancer. We hear about reflux so much, and it's not to be taken lightly. Typical protocol (in my experience) is to take it for 2-3 months until symptoms resolve, at the same time, working to find the cause of reflux in the first place. Obesity is one major cause, but there are others. Omeprazole is a complete acid blocker, and I'm not sure why your doctor would prescribe this prophylactically....unless you've had some issues where he/she thinks this is warranted. My doctor prescribed Pepcid for one month post-op; 1 tablet twice a day. Pepcid is milder, and does not block all acid production. However, since I take a prescription anti-inflammatory, he wants me to take it ongoing to protect my stomach lining. I would get clarification from your doctor, as to the reasoning for keeping you on this medication. And if the answer makes no sense to you, you may want to talk to a gastroenterologist.

First my doctor has me taking 1 Prilosec daily. I recently read that taking Prilosec regularly over the age of 50 yrs, causes "bone mass loss"... makes you more susceptible to fractures.... And on top of that another side effect is weight gain! I was never told that. And I initially lost approx. 25 lbs. but now have gained most of it back. I feel like I never should have had this surgery. I had one fill of my band approx. 10 months ago. A few months later I went back and was told that I didn't need another fill as they were afraid I wouldn't be able to eat without vomiting. I guess my biggest concern now is the Prilosec. Is there any alternative? Do other doctors regularly order this? What should I do? Thanks, Sue Preferences § 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 0 - = Backspace Tab q w e r t y u i o p [ ] Return capslock a s d f g h j k l ; ' \ shift ` z x c v b n m , . / shift English Deutsch Español Français Italiano Português Русский alt alt Preferences
