I had a lot of hair loss before surgery (bad genetics) -- like way more hair loss than people experience WITH surgery. So I have been using Nanogen (like Toppik but better IMO) and occasionally Toppik for years. I think they are both really good products and should help just about everyone with surgery related hair loss. As the poster above said, make sure you use hairspray after you apply the fiber powders. I haven't started seeing hair loss from surgery yet but I assume it's coming soon, so I've visited here: http://www.hairforwomenhpi.com/ and ordered a topper. They custom make them to match your natural shade and texture of hair, so I won't get mine for a few more weeks. Hopefully before my hair really starts falling out! Because if I get massive hair loss now, on top of what I already have, it is going to be scary without a hair piece to cover it up.

Doctors Discussing Weight Loss With Patients
QueenOfTheTamazons replied to Inner Surfer Girl's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
They're not saying that doctors shouldn't tell you you're overweight and they need to lose weight. They're saying that telling you you need to lose weight without giving you the proper tools on how to do anything about it is a negative. If I tell you to go cook a fancy dinner but don't tell you where to buy the ingredients for what recipe do you use you're just going to get frustrated and upset. The request and advice to lose weight it should be accompanied by solid information, or a specific treatment plan so that the patient doesn't feel discouraged. Weight loss is hard if you don't have the tools or the knowledge to do it. HW 385 SW 359 Sleeved 10/5/16 -
I had RNY gastric bypass surgery and for the first month my meal volume was limited to 2 ounces per meal. That is almost nothing. With this minuscule amount of food, it is next to impossible to meet your protein daily requirements by food alone, so therefore you need to rely on supplements such as protein shakes. I found that if I met the fluid, vitamin and protein requirement, I had all the energy I needed. In your case since you are very much on the go, you might need a little extra protein. So I guess I am saying don't stress on the meals, but rather put your focus on meeting your fluid, vitamin and protein goals. If you are weak, it can be due to dehydration. If you are weak it can be due to an electrolyte deficiency (such as potassium and sodium). Without sufficient protein, your body will scavenge protein from other areas of your body, such as your muscles. Protein is extremely important after surgery as its job in the body is to build and maintain tissues including your body's major organs and skeletal muscles. Protein deficiency, when continued over a long period of time can cause a disease known as protein caloric malnutrition. Common symptoms are poor healing, fatigue, hair loss and muscle wasting. Immediate post op, protein promotes healing of the staple line and incisions.

I agree with this - sounds like the dreaded three-week stall (usually happens during the third week, but not always - the first major stall can happen any time during the first 4-6 weeks or so of surgery). Just stick to your plan and the weight loss will start up again. My first stall lasted two weeks, but once my weight loss started up again, I dropped like 6-8 lbs within a couple of days.

Is anyone else starting to get a little Nervous?
SPEBSQSAlady replied to debbieperez55's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I am so enjoying reading this post. I had the band placed 8/2007, removed due to slippage 3/2008 and getting a new one 9/15/2008. I am also nervous even though I have been there before. Any surgery give me the shakes. I know the band can work as I lost 63 pounds, and have gained some back. I want that "tool" back and that "tool" does work, if you work with it. Don't expect quick or rapid weight loss as that just does not happen. But, hey, any weight loss is better than weight gain. I had great support the first time, but now many people can't believe I am going to "go through it again". Then there are those that say, "until eveyone walks in my shoes, it is my decision and to let those nay-sayers go." Teri, I have them in my own family also, and I just don't get into discussions about it with them any more. As long as my DH is in agreement, I am fine. He has to live with me and put up with my PBing, and not eating like the old me. He was so supportive the first time and is looking forward to me losing more and getting healthier. He has always been slim ( the typical Jack Sprat could eat no fat, his wife could eat no lean LOL), and is anticipating me doing stuff with him that I could not do before because of my weight. Hang in there everyone. Let the nerves run their course, and keep looking forward. -
Hello Everyone, My name is Lyn and I have been poking around this site for a couple of weeks now. I thought it was time to introduce myself. I am just barely starting the process. I meet with my new PCP next week to get a referral to the weight loss center at Cedars Sanai here in LA. I am very excited and scared all at the same time. I actually made it to the center last year and even had a consult with the surgeon then chickened out. I have gone back and forth with this decision. I keep thinking that if I just try a little bit harder I can do this on my own. Well a year and twenty pounds later I have finally come to terms with this and know that I need help. I surrender! I can't do it on my own, not long term. I have found tons of motivation and determination on this site. Everytime I get scared and start to change my mind again I sign-on and read the post and sucess stories and I know that this is what I want. I can't keep hiding behind the pounds. I am tired of being invisible. I will keep you all posted of my progress.

Well you're telling people you get better weight loss with other surgeries, which isn't neccesarily true. Maybe you shouldn't be drinking soda, carbonation causes the pouch to stretch, if you did that with any of those surgeries you probably wouldnt be losing weight like you wanted. :|

I might be a slow loser, but I have a bright future!

:yikes: Howdy! I'm a Southern Ohio girl who was lap banded 7-3-07 by Dr. Curry in Cincy. I am very thankful for this operation, his skills, and the success I have achieved up to this point. I would be interested in joining any group who thinks I fit their criteria. I am 56 years young LOL, somedays feeling like 66. I haven't had a fill since January 07. Am going to the new office in Columbus, OH in Feb. looking to get a fill then. Love this Dr. and his staff. I am having trouble losing the same 3/4 pounds and putting it back on again. I just take it in stride. If I keep my carbs low (20-40) I lose better. I read the tip about more protein, so I am trying this. Has anyone's taste keep changing constantly? I have alot of troube with hamburger/red meat/pork etc. Not everyday, but if I eat it at lunch with know problem, can't eat it for supper or vice versa. I get chest pain, dumping, etc. I try to eat olives (5), walnuts (1Tbsp) hummus, egg white beaters in salads, seeds and protein powder to get a lot of protein. Any ideas? I was told to watch the Fat content and Carbs. Exercise is my downfall. Cannot cardio/aerobic due to accident on right side w/ total knee replacement and now Tarsal Tunnel in foot. Wish we had a Fast Track toning site around here. Haven't seen toning tables since the late 80's. Seen results on patients at Dr. C's office. WOW Any ideas? I don't know if Holzer Weight Loss Center has something like this set-up for their patientsor not. Also, they might not let others in. I wish everyone to stay warm and safe. Here's to a brand new 2009, a brand new you and me, and may this year be your best year ever. Drop me a line. Bye -
in that case, the best choice would have been milk without the added sugar. same Protein, and not filled with sugar, or even worse, hfcs. it has nothing to do with weight loss, in my opinion, but with not justifying bad choices. Protein powder was a must always have during that stage for me. I only needed it once, but it saved me.

Hunger, exaustion and guilt
Jdub replied to Stacy_wls's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
If you're pushing yourself really hard at the gym, you're obviously going to need a few more calories to nourish the body. As long as you are eating healthy and within your ranges, you'll do great! Follow your NUTs advice. Currently on my full liquid diet, my NUT said any ranges my surgeon gave me I should be at the higher end (due to my structure), so for this phase it was listed 600-800 for me, so I'm trying to hit close to 800 calories a day. I found that hitting the gym everyday this week with 30 minutes of intense cardio actually slowed down my weight loss this week as I think I was pushing my body into starvation mode and i was getting those hunger pangs more in the evening this week then what I'm used too. As an example, I consumed 735 calories on Thursday, burned 630 from exercise in addition to what the body normally burns for the day and sets me up in a huge deficit. I'm going to reduce the intensity of the cardio for now until my calorie intake is back up to 1000-1200 and I think then I'll be okay. Everyone is different, so please don't use my numbers for yourself, as I'm just trying to explain whats been happening with me as it might shed some light on your own dilemma -
How long will this process take?
Frenchie1977 replied to missionslimmom's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I think it all depends on what your insurance and your doctor requires because my insurance didn't require any medically supervised weight loss so I didn't have to do the standard 3-6 months of weight loss tracking. My first appointment was on Sep 9 and my surgery is on Dec 5, I could of had it the second week of November but there were some scheduling conflicts, so for me less than 3 months -
I've been the same weight for an entire week and I'm frustrated! I was just sleeved on 5/31 and including pre-op (2 weeks liquid) I'm down 22 lbs. 15 of those were from the pre-op diet. I'm doing everything by the book so I can't understand why I'm stuck. Anyone have advice? (I'm a once a week weigher, not daily) Thanks in advance!

Where are my fellow November 2010 bandsters????
MsJeannetteA replied to Toohotfortv's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Don't fret! Seems like we are in the same boat! I haven't had a good fill until 2 weeks ago... I think i'm at a sweet spot now, but I really didn't feel any type of restriction until a few weeks ago. So my weight loss has been slower than average. -
Your body might still be in recovery mode from the surgery. I'm a slow loser so I understand your frustration. I think that really keeping hydrated has started my weight loss again...oh & take your measurements vs just using the scale. If you're eating "right" & you're active, I bet you are losing inches & you don't even realize it.

Hi Everyone! I have been checking this forum out for the past few days and just registered today. There is so much knowledge and support available here. It should be a requirement for patients to register for this site! I am currently saving for my lap band surgery since my insurance doesn't cover it. My main reasons for having surgery are for my future health. Diabetes and heart disease run rampant in my family and it's just a matter of time before I am diagnosed. Also, my joints have been really bothering me lately. I went through the posts and have seen numerous questions regarding excess skin, cosmetic surgery etc..... What I ask may seem to repeat other posts however I want to see if there are others my height, size shape etc.. that can tell me their experiences. I am 33 years old, have never had children and am engaged to be married. I have been overweight my entire life however I have always remained active. In High School I was a 3 sport champion athlete yet still managed to graduate weighing 235lbs. I am tall (5'10) and my body has always been pretty well proportioned. My great grandmother was 6'6 350lbs (I'm not kidding!!) :smile2: I have always had a lower "pooch" belly but it does not hang down real low like a lot of others that I have seen. I've always been told that I have a shapely figure. (just a bigger one) My weight is currently at 305lbs. I wear a size 42D bra and wear a size 24 at Lane Bryant. I have steadily put on weight since High School and have not lost or gained anything significant other than 25lbs on weight watchers. Unfortunately, my lower stomach now has an upstairs neighbor. I've had stretch marks since I was young however all of the stretch marks that I have are very faint and thin. I can still see them if I really look but they are nothing like the stretch marks that I have seen on some people that have had children. I know that everyone is different but I am wondering how many other people like me faired with their skin bouncing back after weight loss.. Are my chances good that my skin won't be saggy since I will lose weight slower than gastric bypass? I appreciate all responses........ Thanks for listening.... Emily ..........waiting for the day where I can wear ultra low rise jeans and LOOK GOOD!!!!!!

Why is that some people feel so compelled to dish out advice in regards to weight loss- especially those who don't personally struggle with it themselves?? I am not hiding the fact that I intend to have lap-band surgery and overall people have been positive and supportive so I can't complain. But there are those few.... Today a woman next to me at my hairdressers mentioned her mother and sister had gastric bypass and I chirped up and informed them that I'm having lap-band as soon and as fast as these pre-op months will go...(the alternative would be for me to NOT mention this and basically lie to everyone when weight starts coming off and that won't work for me.) Anyway, my new hairdresser (who is excellent at highlights!) looks at me and gawks. She then asks me why I would consider something so extreme and had I tried losing the weight naturally? WTH??? I smiled politely and told her "Yes, of course I have and I have yoyo'd for years and I'm actually quite excited about the surgery (Thank you very much!) but she continued... She went on to tell me every horror story she could think of (all 3 of which were gastric bypass stories which she was confusing with lap band) and I ended up explaining the process and that both surgeries were actually pretty common now and much safer than they were 20 years ago. etc. Anyway she was not happy until she had given me the name of her holistic doctor who she swears for 175 an hour can cure me of obesity. I love my highlights, but jeez! Anybody else deal with this?? Secondly, my sister (who is a size 1, models for a living, and who has never had any weight issues) insists that "only the strong survive" and that I "just need to ask the universe to give me the body that I want, to envision it" LMAO. She watches The Secret a little too much. I would love to know how others on here deal with friendly and not so friendly unsolicited advice.

Afraid to Ask Doctor About WLS...
Jonathan Blue replied to chylamarie's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
One thing to do is phrase it in the form of a question and let him answer for you. Explain how you have been overweight for a long time and have tried many diets. Ask him if there are diet pills, programs, or any other options out there he would recommend. Then listen to his answers and say some your previous doctor had mentioned the idea of a surgical option and ask his thoughts. With his answer ask him if he would refer you somewhere to look into all the options. Most places have weight loss programs that incorporate doctor supervised as well as surgical weight loss options. Once there you can let there program decide on surgery for you and just let you PCP know. Its a lot like getting a referral from your PCP to see a specialist. I actually lucked out in my journey in the my PCP has known me for years and on several appointments prior to starting my journey had recommended that option. The other thing is a lot of these surgical weight loss programs offer introductory meets and consultations without needing a referral from a PCP. They would be able to tell you if they take your insurance and if a PCP's referral is necessary, they can actually contact them for the referral directly. So you would even necessarily need to see them prior. I hope this helps a little. The first steps are always the hardest. Once you get the ball rolling it gets a little easier. There will still be tough parts, but resolving yourself to do this and getting started are the hardest I think. -
If you have any before face shots try comparing them. It’s amazing the changes you will see in your own face with even a small loss, let alone 30 pounds. We are our own worst critics and lots of us seem to have this issue on and off.

Conflicted about discussing surgery with family, coworkers, etc.
CheleLynn45 replied to Healthy2015's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was very worried about this at first. While I was going thru the 6 month diet and getting all my requirements done I only talked to my husband, daughter, parents, two friends at work, and my very close friends. Everyone was VERY supportive. As time got closer to my surgery date I did share that I was going to have WLS with most of my department and few others I work with since I would be gone for 5 weeks and they would wonder where I was. I was extremely nervous to go back to work after all that time, I was afraid how people other than I had told would react to my weight loss and how it happened. Well as people started asking where I had been, commenting on how I looked, it got easier and easier to talk about it. I truly didn't know what I was going to say until the words were coming out of my mouth. Once I started sharing I felt so good about it that I have not not shared how I am doing this with anyone who asks. I am proud of my accomplishment, I am proud of how I am working this sleeve. Also it is amazing how many people know someone who has gone thru this. I have not encountered any negative comments, at least face to face. Who knows what people might be saying behind my back. But I don't care cause I KNOW how much work I am putting into this. The support I have received has been so motivating and keeps me moving forward. It saddens me when I read posts where people do not have the support especially of their immediate family. That's why this site is so important Sometimes it is the only support people get. In the end you must do what feels right for you. This is your journey no one elses!!! -
Stalls are part of it, in my experience at least - I lost in steps. But you sound like you've answered the question. Get yourself moving/exercising more and back on track. Back to basics - Protein first, tracking food, Water water water...you know how it goes, lol. I bet that will get the scale moving in the right direction again :-) If I look back at the year it took me, the weight loss was pretty consistent. It didn't stop at 6 months, but it was work! You've done an awesome job!! Keep it going :-)

Most embarrassing diet/exercise product you've ever bought?
Frustr8 replied to Creekimp13's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
My late MIL was a pusher for the Grapefruit diet, she was certain the grapefuit cells got in your bloodstream, and just like Pac Man they went around chomping up cholesterol particles. Grapefruit juice is a diuretic, sure she lost some weight, she peed constantly, it was all water. Also, she believed you would never gain weight if you stood up while eating. Calories go out the soles of your feet? She stood over us all at family dinners, a 5ft2in vulture nearly dumping food,on top of an unsuspecting family member. I lived in fear of spaghetti,or beef and, noodles as a bath when I least wanted it. The Ayds I mentioned before? We lost the first box when my cousin came to visit, decided weight loss might be good for her also, chopped down the rest of the box and threw up all over the bathroom. Guess who got to clean it up? If exercise is good for weight loss I lost a couple pounds that day! I also was on an oatmeal diet, 3 big bowls a day, with saccharin, wonder I can stand the sight of it. It also got rid of everything in your bowels, over and over again. Tried the push up diet and I realized portions of me hit the ground first, sort of a dangle-skmoosh motion. -

Well I just looked back and its 2 1/2 weeks since I hit onederland, and I really couldn't imagine ANYTHING feeling so good as that did, but I guess it has been a good couple of weeks all in all, and it does!! First I hit onderland, :cheer2: :cheer2: then my next aim was to be overweight, and no longer obese, which I hit a week ago :clap2::clap2: , and today I got back into the 13 stone bracket AND hit the 40lb loss marker   I'm 2lb off 3 stone loss, and 6lb away form being the same weight as my wedding day (After not seeing that for 8 years of self abuse, and 2 pregancnies!). So here is my next set of promises to myself; I am going to go back to basics for a week, back to liquid only and 90g Protein without fail, I am going to lose that 6lb within the next 8 days to hit my easter goal! I am going to weigh LESS than I did on my wedding day by the time I go on holiday in 2 weeks, and I will not be afraid to wear shorts in public while I'm away. I have a dress which is about 1/2 inch too small around my bust, it will fit, and I WILL wear it to my friend's wedding in 4 weeks from now. And when I do? I'll be a size smaller than I have ever been in my adult life, and I will have lost 4 1/2 dress sizes. I will dance at the reception, I will not hide from their photographer, and I may (possibly) even let my own husband carry me over the threshold as I was too scared of hurting him on our own honeymoon night as I felt so fat! I LOVE MY SLEEVE!!!:success1:

I was banded June 17th and I haven't had a period since. My weight loss is slowing down now. I was always a little irregular though so I'm not worried by it (although I am due to go to the gyn) And I know I'm not pregnant. I'll enjoy it while I can!!! (or before the Dr does something about it!!)
