Looking 4 Oct Bandsters Status Updates

My surgery was 10/19 and I had to take all of my pain pills because I had a hiatal hernia repair during my banding procedure. I'm on the mushy diet stage and can't wait to eat soft foods on Thurs. I've lost 11 lbs. so far.

Looking 4 Oct Bandsters Status Updates

Hi, I was banded 10/25/11 and have been doing pretty good. I can walk a mile, sit, and stand without discomfort. I'm not very hungry. Getting about 600 calories a day, 70ish grams Protein a day average. Saturday I had lots of gas and the shoulder pain was intense. Heating pad and gas-x strips help but I ended up taking a dose of my pain med at bedtime. Lots of gas release today but the shoulder is pain free. Just follow you doctors instructions and you should be fine. TBM TheBandedMan is on YouTube

Looking 4 Oct Bandsters Status Updates

Got my band on 10/25/11. Doing pretty good, only took the pain meds on the 1st day home...still a bit sore but able to sit and walk around comfortable enough. still on a clear liquid diet which is getting more and more difficult, because i am starting to feel hungry. Looking forward to this wednesday 1st followup and should be able to add full liquids to the diet, yay! Good luck with your surgery. Lisa

hard to get in all my liquids

I am really struggling to get everything in too. I think yesterday, I had 2 sf jello cups, which took about 40 minutes to finish. I had about 10 oz. of diet decaf tea, 15 oz. of water and about 4 oz. of nsa carnation instant breakfast (I loved them before, but yesterday it tasted gross.) I have something with me constantly, but I just can't seem to get it down fast enough.
  7. Hi everyone.I've read your posts for the past several months and have found the info here inspiriational, reassuring and insightful. Thank you all for helping me reinforce my decision to move forward. I attended a seminar on 10/12, had my first appt. At UNC Hospital on 11/30 and my second visit w/ the surgeon today. AND we set my surgery date for 1/27. I'm soo excited. I have BCBSNC insurance and they approved my request in 24 hours. No preop diet waiting period required. I'm so looking forward to moving forward.I'm excited and scared at the same time, but mostly excited. I'm looking forward to the journey to a healthier me. I have about 140 lbs to lose so it will be a long journey, but I've got time and working on patience! My best to all of you and I look forward to being a more regular poster. Cheers to all!!
  8. Wow, with a family history like that, I'd say banding is a really good investment in your health and quality of life. It IS hard. You dont get banded and then automatically lose weight for very long as you'll quickly work out a way to get calories in if you really want to. Look, you have to WANT to change. You have to be willing to do what you would always have had to do to lose weight, only the band will help you to be a lot less hungry. But its a tough journey, and losing 100lb in a year doesnt always happen, it took me 2 years to lose that much. Any weight loss at all, even 10% of your body weight can do marvellous things for your health, so I'd suggest to not be so fixated on a goal like that, Exercise helps enormously too. What do I eat in a day and what are my portion sizes?. I dont measure to be honest, early in the day I can eat probably a cup worth of food, late in the day its 1/2 cup as I tend to be tighter at night. I eat all foods, I dont avoid carbs, but I dont eat a lot of white sugary carbs. I try to avoid too many processed foods, preferring fresh, I have the occasional glass of wine, a treat every now and then and I run for up to an hour most days of the week. To lose 100lb in a year if that's what you really want to accomplish, then I'd imagine you need to be stricter with the measuring and weighing than what I am, keep to the portion sizes suggested to your by your doctor, adjust your band so that those portion sizes satisfy you and make sure you do regular exercise in some form or another. If you MUST reach that goal and you really do not think you can live with the restrictions the band places on you and the amount of work you have to do for a band to be effective, then there's other weight loss surgeries to consider, I know nothing really about them so perhaps others can chime in there. I can tell you that it doesnt stop when you've lost the weight, I have not changed my routine or exercise now that I'm maintaining rather than losing. I'll have to do this for the rest of my life. You've only got a little time, I see. Dont go ahead if you're not ready, you need to think about it. However, whilst its VERY scary to contemplate it really feels perfectly normal when you get there. But you must be ready to follow the rules. Good luck!

My 'head' wants me to eat BIG TIME

Hang in there - it will get better. The other day I made Shepherds Pie, something I ate a lot of pre-op. I ponied up to the dish and scooped out a huge serving like I would have before surgery - like a cup and walked over to the table. I looked down at that big mound of food and said, "What am I doing? I will only eat about 1/4 of that!" I went back to the stove, scooped a bunch out and returned to the table and ate about 1/4 of my original portion. Old habits die hard - I found myself reaching into a bag of chips...I can have chips, they aren't illegal, but I threw them in the garbage as a symbolic move. Those aren't for me. I had a stall for 10 days between weeks 2 and 3 and have only lost .4 pounds this week, so I suspect another one is upon me. It sucks. It's time for me to put the scale away. I can only control what I put in my mouth and how much exercise I get. I can't control what my body is going to do - it's going to work things out on it's own timeframe. You're doing great - you got this!!!!!

    Food Obsession

Wow it sounds like you have a lot going on and are stuck in a rough patch. Your weight loss is AMAZING so it makes me sad that you are obsessing over food. But I get it. I too have been treated for anxiety and depression for years but don't think weight loss is going to magically make it go away (my doctor suggested same thing- kinda scary how they glaze right over the head stuff part huh?) and I'm trying very hard to keep my little brain busy. I'm a huge reader and wow, does that help!!! I'm reading an author by the name of Jen Lamcaster. She has several books starting with Bright Lights, Big Ass. I literally cry tears when reading it because she's got so many issues (weight being one of them) and her approach to life is so different than mine it kinda wakes me up, ya know? She has a huge ego and mouth to match and rises to the top of her career when she comes crashing down and learns a whole heap of humility. I don't know, the Jen Books just take my mind off my stuff even for a moment and I can get a better perspective of what's what. I've recommended her to bunches of women and they all say the same thing. Gosh girl... 139 down and still dealing with obsession- it just goes to show how hard we are on ourselves don't you think? I do and it makes me so sad and frustrated!! And I've noticed sometimes instead of just a kind word people want to turn everything INTO something huge. Ugh. So other than the Jen Books have you ever taken a yoga class? They are everywhere and sometimes you can find a teacher who is good enough to teach the basics (not all this crazy gym yoga) breathing, being mindful, stretching they can all be super empowering. For the past 10 years i go to an ashram in the Bahamas for a few days by myself and hit the reset button. It's great because there are people there from all over the world and no one judges, they are just there to take a step back from their crazy lives and prioritize. Plus it's stunning and relatively inexpensive! And there are only 2 meals a day and they are yummy vegetarian which i normally don't go for but there, it's amazing!!! I always come back a few pounds down and leave something that's been bothering me (maybe a bad habit) there on the beautiful beach on Paradise island. I trust the waves to take care of it. . Keep in touch and let me know how you are feeling, ok? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Muscle or fat?

I'm not doing crazy weights. 5 lb leg weights for lifts, 15-20 lb dumbbells for arms, treadmill/recumbant bike 10 mins each, thigh exercises with black theraband. I'm disabled so need to be really careful what I do. I'm afraid to take days off, as it's such a thin tightrope to maintain as it is. That's why this gain is scaring me. I'm already 5 lbs above my personal goal and to add 1-2 lbs to that is terrifying unless I can know if it's muscle.

    Insurance Approval Received

hello! wow you live in huntersville? I work there! So im in the process of getting a lap band (I hope). I had my initial consult, had my labs, got the 5-year weight history, and have my psych consult and nutritionist consult on Monday. From my undertanding it will take 10 days to get the psych report back and then it will all be submitted to BCBSNC for approval. two questions:: ON my 5 year history, it shows that I have had weight problems (40+) for 3 years, but not 5. Will that hurt me? Also, how long after the info was submitted did it take you be approved?? Thanks for any info!!

    Favorite Food Staples Post-Op?

Congrats on your 35 lbs ! Woo hoo ! Way to go ! I dont do well with eggs but my hubby loved these Breakfast Bites- preheat oven to 450, grease a muffin tin very well. In each well put 3 slightly defrosted tater tots and squish them down to make a crust. Bake 10 mins. Reduce oven to 350, sprinkle tater tots with cooked meats of your choice, plus chopped veggies, sprinkle with cheese. Whip together 8 eggs and 1/4 cup milk. Pour over each well, add salt and pepper. Bake 20 mins, then slide a fork under each to pop out of the muffin tin. Let cool, store in freezer. Easy to grab and microwave on busy days. Good luck !
  14. I may have messed up on date estimates. It all happened fast the last month. Summar was Dr. Nick's insurance coordinator that handled everything. Aetna has to respond within 14 business days and I was calling Summar and Aetna on day 10 asking if I was approved. She is great. Everyone has been great. I was told to do 4 classes, but if only 3 great because they're kind of silly. There is a booklet though that is helpful.

    .?

Welcome to the best RNY forum on the net! Surgery takes about one and a half to two hours (assuming it is done laparoscopically). It seems that the majority of doctors require patients to lose approximately 10% of excess weight prior to surgery. Doing so reduces the size of the liver and makes it easier for them to access the stomach during the surgery. Exactly how you accomplish that weight loss depends on the doctor. Some folks are given specific diets to follow for two or more weeks pre-op. Others (myself included) were not given any specific diet - my doctor just said you must lose 20 to 25 pounds prior to the surgery. No weight loss, no surgery. I found the pre-op lab testing quite extensive. That's a good thing. They want to be as certain as possible that you are healthy enough to have the surgery. Exactly what testing is done depends on your individual health history and any comorbidities that you may have. Some doctors will test for nicoteine right up to the surgery as well. If it comes back positive, some will not operate. Hope this helps!!

    Two days into post op

For me, it was taking my pain meds, drink plenty of liquids, and get up and get moving! I am now 10 days, and It does not even feel like I had surgery at all!

    Weight loss since surgery

I had surgery 10/23/12 and have lost 31 lbs. I can not seem to get this restriction sweet spot. Im either unrestricted or getting stuck, but continue to work it all the time. filling unfilling etc. GOOD NEWS!!!! I'm at my halfway point today. 31 lbs lost, 31 to go. So inspired by those of you who have lost 50 or 80 etc. It can be done!!! Hard to imagine but you give me faith.
  18. I was walking immediately and went back to the gym doing cardio at 2 weeks, but no lifting more than 10 pounds until 4-6 weeks.
  19. Hi, I am on my 8th day and per my doctors plan ..I should be on pureeed or minced food for days 10-14 than soft foods....So I think you are fine... People seem to think you will cause major harm if you eat but I rarely think that's the case..Surgeon are aware it will happen being they are dealing with people who are suffering with weight issues lol.,,,NO harm intended ...BEST OF LUCK...I also was banded and had it removed during my VSG surgery.I didn't have good luck with band

    Port And Fills

I sleep on my stomach and have no issues. I was banded oct 27th 2011 had my first fill 11/30 and go for my second fill 1/10. My dr for the first 3 months tries to do a fill a month if needed and after the first 3 then its really based apon your needs.
  21. So yesterday I went in for my first fill. I should have known something was wrong when they couldn’t find my appointment in the system. They found the ‘mistake’ appointment that had been made and canceled, but they couldn’t find my actual appointment. They finally found it in the walk in book. Ok, so what ever I go sit and start reading because I know I am going to be a while. I finally get called back for my vitals, sent back to the waiting area. After 30 minutes I finally get called back in and ushered into a room. A brand new, as in it was his first day ever) intern came in and asked me why I was there, any complaints etc, and then left. Back to reading, 15-20 minutes later the charge nurse came in and told me that someone messed up and put me in the wrong area for the fills. Well she said she was going to go talk to my surgeon to see if he could see me right away, he couldn’t but he could see me “in about 10 minutes”. Well it takes how ever long to hit the port, then the 30-45 minute wait to make sure I won’t gag on the Water etc. I just couldn’t stay, my sitter had an appt at 4:30 and I told her I would be back by 4 to get the kids so they could leave. I wasn’t happy at all, but I kept all nice and smiles because you don’t want to piss off the people that will be jabbing you with needles. LOL Anyhow they are booked through the rest of the month but they are sliding me in on a “non appointment” for next Tuesday to actually get my fill. I am not happy about how yesterday panned out but what are you going to do right? Stuff happens then you get over it and move on. Sorry for the Novella but I needed to rant a bit ....

    Grocery Stores

I avoid added sugars, not all sugars. I just try to keep the sugar content low. I especially avoid high fructose corn syrup. For instance, when looking at a Greek yogurt I aim for a Protein content greater than 10 grams and sugar content of less than 10 grams.

    Will They Deny Me?

LaBelle509 thanks so much! Would you mind my asking if it is very expensive to talk to her? I do not have insurance so I do have a budget on what I can afford to pay with saving up for pre-op testing. I would love to hear how it goes so I will definitely be checking in. @FutureSleeved To be honest the way I have gotten over a lot of the hurdles and common symptoms of BPD has been self help. Around 19 I was seeing a therapist and she was great at listening and suggesting things to try for coping but I couldn't afford to see her for a while and had to do it on my own, so I started purchasing a few books by some specialists on self help for BPD and fully understanding about myself and the disorder and very important steps for coping. It turns out that all along I have been doing a coping method that they use as one of their first to try in dealing with the noisy thoughts and I didn't even know it. I've just always done it. And I have read in some places although I'm not sure on the accuracy but I've read that BPD is not a chemically induced disorder but more a learned behavioral reaction to young childhood trauma. So it has been known for people as they age older up into their 30's and so forth to totally come out of the behavior and live somewhat normal lives. I don't know the truth in this but either way I feel that I am mostly in check. I made a very long blog post the other day about my obstacles and overcoming a lot of things that I haven't done in many years now and don't find myself having any itches to do those things at all. I'm pretty proud of myself. Maybe finding this forum about VSG came at the right time in my life where I am truly mentally capable of handling something like this, not necessarily on my own of course but I mean in general. I do still plan on talking to someone before and after.
  25. I feel the same was sleeved 10/4/17 also. First sip of water when I came home I had dry heaves... horrible. I still have quite a bit of pain & am trying not to use the pain medication. When I sip anything I can feel the pain in my stomach as it goes down. Nervous to drink too much or too little. Anyone have suggestions? Sent from my XT1635-01 using BariatricPal mobile app
