Stomach flu/throwing up
spoiltmom replied to skinnyorbust's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm not sure. I know I had a hysterectomy a few weeks ago and my surgeon was adamant that I get a bottle of Phenergan before hand and take it around the clock for the first 3 days to prevent any vomiting. He even gave me extra just in case the kids bring home a virus or something. -
Sometimes your pouch gets grouchy too. At those times it rejects food and theres nothing you can do. Swelling is common in the beginning and the pouch wont fit hardly anything. My biggest struggles were around week 3 when my pouch was swollen.

Was banded on Tuesday 9/4. I have not had any real pain, just a bit of tenderness in my upper belly. I am very bloated, but I also ended up getting my time of the month a week early, so I have menstrual cramps:-( I have been able to sleep in bed laying on my sides the last two nights:-) I have been out doing things, shopping cleaning, just taking it a bit slower than I usually would. After tomorrow I can start puréed/ mushies. Pretty excited to tast something besides the full liquid stuff! My tummy lets me know when it's time to eat something, but it doesn't take much to feel full. Headed to Atlantic City for Three days on Thursday. Gonna make sure I pack plenty of foods I know i can eat. Then back to work on the 16th. I highly reccomend taking the two weeks off work. Good luck to all those being banded this month! I'll update after I start my mushies:-)

Jamie, put you feet up, get your ipod, watch TV, read a book, but just give yourself time to heal. You just had major surgery, you're not supposed to lift more than 10 lbs for 6 weeks. OK, so maybe that's not possible, but still, take it easy. Any house cleaning will still be there next week. You can take liquid Tylenol if the hydrocodone doesn't work, drink lots of tea and sip, don't gulp water. It's really important to get as much water down as possible, up to 64 oz and everything counts, even the water in yogurt. Take it easy, don't stress over small stuff, a little depression is normal, and be sure to take a bunch of time for yourself. The pain is normal, most people go through it. Try to keep your attitude positive and I'll guarantee you'll be over this part in just a few weeks.

Carmillejoanita, My insurance is Humana Choice Care PPO. I don't know if your insurance will require the 6 month monitored diet. I assume you were required to see your doctor everymonth to receive diet pills, at least that is what my doctor required. Talk to your doctor and see if he will use that time period as your 6 month diet. Of course it also depends on the notes the doctor documented in your file. When my pcp turned my information into my wl doctor's office he had to include his notes for the 6 month diet and I was required to attend every month, not to miss a month. Good luck to us all, my wl office said for me to contact them again in 4 weeks so I will twiddle my thumbs until them. I will include all of you in my prayers. PJ

4 days post op not enough protein
Catherine707 replied to quinn's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My doctor had us doing 15cc every 15 minutes the first day, 30 cc every 15 min the second day and then sipping constantly the following day. It took me at least a week to get up to 60 grams of protein. The fluids are more important but getting the liquid protein in will help you heal faster and feel better sooner. Good luck! -
I got my band put on on 1/15/09 and on 1/16/09 they had to go back in and unbuckle it. Now I have a standard size band that is unbuckled until the swelling goes down (about 4 weeks). The doctor said sometimes this happens and I will probably have some restriction even without a fill. I am a 5' 2.5" female and I weigh 225lbs. He said he could change it to the bigger band but as I lose weight will it get too big? Well who knows...I do know that the entire thing was quite traumatic. I am glad that I am not alone in this. I thought it was just me. I hope you feel better and I hope they can buckle mine in 4 weeks with out swelling. Let me know how things go with you.

Hello All, Well, here is my story, I was banded on the 14th. In the hospital the surgeon mentioned that the band was tight around my stomach. Apparently men have a larger fat storage around the stomach. This was my issue. She (surgeon) did an xray and said I had a little contrast pass through the band. I was also told to do a 6 week liquid diet so the excess fat deposit around my stomach would shrink. In the hospital I was started on the basic 1oz per 15min routine. On the 15th they had me swallow my heart melds and continue with the liquids. I was released the afternoon of the 15th. Friday the 16th the crap hit the fan. Around 2 Pm I took my heart med and the pill got stuck. I couldn't get Water down. Everything that went down came back up!!!!!! I was rushed to the hospital that night. They did another xray and the the band was completely closed!!! the night doctor said that its choking my stomach inside and out. I was put on an IV from the 16th until today the 19th. Im happy to be home and back on the 1oz per 15 min so far so good. Help is this normal has any one had a tight band ?? If its too tight why was it installed ?? any encouraging feed back What does my future with the band look like?? :scared2:

Hi Rocky I hope you are feeling better. I am feeling a bit better myself. I am also optimistic that the swelling will go down. I do worry that it will swell again when they close it again. However, I know that every pound I loose will give it a bit more room so since I am on liquids anyway I am sure I will loose a few pounds in the next 4 weeks. Also, my doctor said that the procedure to close it is not even close to the amount of trauma to the body as when the band was put on. So I think everything will be fine. I am glad your band is still hooked and you can get fluids in. The swelling will go down soon. You have stuck it out this far a day or 2 will make a big difference in swelling.

Hi, I am two weeks 5 days post op. I am in the soft food phase - fish, well-cooked vege, egges, fat free cheese, sugar free pudding and tofu are allowed. My typical three meals are like the following: Breaksfast: 1 hard boiled egg; 1/4 cup of fat free cottage cheese with pineapple Two hours later I would feel hungry again. Snack: Edyy's no sugar added popsicle (30 cal, 1g sugar each) Lunch: 3 to 4.5 OZ of flat fish (half to 1 fillet); half cup (4OZ) tofu; 2-3 OZ of vege Snack: Edyy's no sugar added popsicle (30 cal, 1g sugar each) Snack2: 1 sugar free popsicle (10 cal each) Dinner: to 4.5 OZ of flat fish (half to 1 fillet); half cup (4OZ) tofu; 2-3 OZ of vege Snack: Edyy's no sugar added popsicle (30 cal, 1g sugar each) Three or fours hours after lunch or dinner, I feel hungry again. All the meals and snacks combine to about 860 calories per day. Do I seem to eat too much? I read that a lot of people are only eating 1 cup of food? Exactly how much is that? Are we talking about stuff the soft or solid food into a cup sized cup to measure? Yesterday morning, I suddenly gained 3 lbs. I did a post about it here and a lot of responses were it was probably water retention and it will go away eventually. I think that it is probably most water retention; however, am I also eating too much to contribute to the 3 lbs gain?

I am having my first fill on Friday morning and I'm wondering if I have to fast that day? I was banded on September 8th and really excited about my first fill but I don't know if I can eat or drink anything the morning of my fill...another question, How soon can I be filled again? I heard you can have a fill every 2 weeks, is this true? I also heard that you won't feel much restriction until about the 3rd fill, is this true too? Just a bit curious to this new situation in my life. Thanks

Had my band put in 1 week ago. I have developed a rash on my stomach. Anyone else ever experience this?

Quitting Protein Shakes
Indymom replied to ashleyc's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
This is awesome and really helpful! I am not a 'sweets' person and honestly the idea of drinking those Protein shakes just makes my stomach churn, even though I haven't tried any of them. I'm hoping my nutritionist will have some good suggestions at my class next week. -
Isn't it fun to take some time in the middle of a week and "play". Last week it was over 100 here for 3 days, I had to add water to the pool to cool it down, LOL

Its not likely you'll get to 10cc. The more you have in your band, the less it takes at each fill to restore good restriction or to increase it a tiny bit. I dont have a 10cc band, I have a 4cc, but just to give you something to think about, I had 0.1cc put in mine last week and its reduced what I can eat by a good 1/3. Its made a HUGE difference. Appetite is not raging anymore, can only eat less than a cup. You will probably find that as you get more in your band, very small fills make much more difference. I have only had a couple of top ups as I've been maintaining for about 18 months and Fluid does sort of disappear (probably by evaporation over time) so I've really only come back up to what I was about 2 years ago, and I stayed at that level of restriction for an entire year to get down to my goal weight. The time between fill stretches out the more you're filled too - a good level of restriction begins to last you longer and longer. Especially since weight loss does slow down a bit. So in short, dont panic. You've plenty of wiggle room in your band yet.

Hi! My name is nancy i was banded almost 11 months ago (9-13-07) i have only lost 18lbs as of this date. I have had 10 fills in 10 months since surgery. I have no restriction or maybe very little for only a few days. I have a 4cc band and filled 4cc still no restriction. I have kept a food journal for 2 weeks as per my nutritionist and she said the quality for food was fine but the amount i should not be able to eat at one time(like pre-band). I am an x-ray tech. And have taken alot of pictures of my abdomen because if i didn't feel the port i would actually think i had no band placed.i also drank baruim and baruim laced food and watched it go down to see if it gets hung up on the band but it doesn't. I also had an ugi on the record and the radiologist said that the band isn;t working properly because it is not restricting anything. I went to my dr. Appt in june and the nurse practioner said that she looked at the disc and everything is fine i just need another fill,so i was filled to 4.5cc in my 4cc band and i could not even swallow water so she pulled .3 out. I did feel some restriction for about 4-5 days now nothing i can eat anything ,nothing is a problem. I do have another dr. Appt. On aug 5 with the doctor so hopefully i will get some answers ?leak ?malfunctional band wish me luck

Help. Rash After Band
dhales replied to Luv2sing920@aol.com's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I got a weird rash in various spots on my tummy, then under my chest. I asked my doc about it...and he said Yeast infection. They give you a huge amount of antibiotic via IV when you go in for surgery. That plus your immune system is traumatized can make you suseptible to a skin yeast infection. He gave me a pill and it went away in a week. -
I was a little embarrassed about thinking of being nude on the table too, but not enough to not do the surgery! Also, I think they cover you up and only have your stomach area revealed during surgery... at least that's what I think. I was knocked out and won't see any of the people again except my surgeon. And I hardly see my surgeon anymore, usually just the nurses and office staff. Really, it will be fine! I did have diarrhea, but it was from the protein supplements. Both the soy and the whey were making me sick- even the vegan soy one! it didn't start until a week post op though- after it had built up in my system.

I was in a gown until they knocked me out. I never thought about being nude, I guess I was, but it doesn't count if I can't remember it! Yes I had the runs for two weeks post op (which is very unusual for me), but some people find the opposite and others no change to their regular routine. Everyone is different.
