  1. Hi I just went through the revision surgery . On Apr 2. It has been tough but it will get easier . I didn't gain any weight after my sleeve I just ripped my hernia repair. Trying to lift to much weight . Cause of my own pain and it was bad . Now I am feeling much better just started my soft foods . That is a struggle to make sure you chew really well cause blockage is easy . The opening in your new stomach is only about the size of a pencil eraser
  2. Hi I had a Sleeve in May 2014, lost 186lbs in the first year or so then regained around 100lb over the next 18 months. I got back onto full plan and was able to lose around 56lb of that 100 before having the revision to a Bypass on April 17th. It is early days for me as still on fluid only, but I think I made the best decision. I wish you all the luck in the world.
  3. Totally makes sense. I was supposed to do the same thing (although single anastomosis), but my lap band was stuck to my liver, and the surgeon ran out of time to do the full procedure. Ended up with just a VSG. I ask, because you had what looks to me to be pretty rapid weight loss, which is expected with DS. I'm trying to figure out what to expect speed-wise in the case of revision from VSG.
  4. SIPS in Seattle

Submitted to Insurance, now I wait...

The first weigh in at my first visit at my surgeons office is where the count started for me with Aetna. For my revision the approval happened within days of submission. The surgeon’s office doesn’t submit until you’re done with all the requirements of your plan. They should let you know what those are, or you can call and ask Aetna yourself. Approval is usually within 2 weeks of submission. Good luck to you. [emoji4]
  5. Hi there! I had sleeve surgery 5 years ago. The first year was great. I did well and didn't have any complications. I lost almost 100lbs in just over a years, but was never able to hit my goal weight. It seemed like as soon as I got to the year mark my body stalled and I wasn't able to lose any more, and it was a struggle not to start gaining. I was eating right an exercising . It was like my body adjusted to the new way of eating and I slowing started to gain back. 5 years out and falling back in to back eating habits I have gained back 50lbs and I am struggling with severe reflux again. This had greatly improved after my weight loss and hiatal hernia repair with the sleeve. In September, I have going to have another hiatal hernia repair and revision to sleeve surgery to gastric bypass. Anyone else revised from sleeve to bypass care to share your experiences?? Advice? Thoughts? Warnings? Success? Complications?

    No more LB

Hi! I got my LB in 2007 n just got it removed 3 days ago due to complications arising from a tummy tuck in May 2017. The LB is a good weight loss resource tool but it won’t work alone if it doesn’t first click in the mind. I ended up developing GERD n ANEMIA from it but nothing serious. For now I’m going to give my body a break from all these surgeries b4 I consider any more revision to my body. Good luck to a u new with Bariatric surgery
  7. Brandi, It's hard for me to believe that I have been struggling with all kinds of problems/pain for months. I replied to your post back in Jan. Tomorrow morning I go in for the dilation procedure. My swallowing had gotten so bad that I can no longer get even my pureed thin soups down, even they are getting stuck in my throat and chest. Hurts like hell. I have been on soups for the past few months. My gastro is skeptical that the dilation will work for me. He's also going to take a closer look at my hiatal hernia that was discovered with barium swallow last month. Gastro says he will consult w/ my surgeon to do a revision to bypass if this doesn't work. Honestly scared of the bypass. I'm almost 18 months post sleeve. Down to 174 lbs from 334 lbs. Losing too quickly now, due to pain/gerd/swallowing difficulty/vomiting down 25 pounds since March. Thank you for sharing your experience, I hope that you are still getting excellent results/improvement since the bypass.
  8. I had RNY on March 29th, I was discharged 2 days later and felt “ok” besides pain and nausea. 2 weeks went by and I had not had a bowel movement and wasn’t even near meeting my fluid goals. I had been in twice for IV fluids. The day after I got graduated to soft foods I ate an egg and it stayed down but I was uncomfortable after. The next day I had an egg for breakfast and tried 4 small grilled shrimp for dinner. I fell asleep after dinner and woke up around midnight feeling that the shrimp hadn’t moved at all and were just sitting there and felt very sick. I ended up throwing up the contents of my pouch and calling the advice nurse. She talked to a surgeon on call and he said go to the ER. After being put through a CT scan and an XRay with contrast it showed there was a blockage of either swelling or a complete blockage and I was transported to the hospital where I originally had my surgery. I went under for a laparoscopic investigative surgery to find out what the swelling was, and it proved to be scar tissue at the site of the jejunostomy. Only two weeks and I had that much scar tissue? Disheartening. My surgeon said he fixed it, and I was in the hospital 9 days total. I have been home for 3 days and I am still in so much pain, and already constipated again, I feel full and again am having a hard time meeting fluid requirements. I feel like I was botched and ruined my life, that I will be stuck now continually getting revision surgeries and always feeling sick. I am 30 years old and a mother of a 3 year old, what have I done.
  9. I had my final pre-op appt. with the team & surgeon today and the surgeon was asking me if I was approved the first go round or if I had to appeal etc. i told him no that I was just approved, no denial process. He asked because I am having a revision. There was no real approval process for me, I am just realizing this, with Kaiser. After the program, My surgeon said he would perform my revision and things progressed quickly in terms of scheduling my surgery, getting my prescriptions and all my pre-op work done. I did not have to wait days/weeks for an answer like I am reading most do. So did anyone else with Kaiser ( I am with mid-Atlantic) not have a true approval process? Did your surgeon just say, “yes you’ll get the surgery” and moved right on?
  10. Were you a sleeve revision, or did you go from lap band to full SIPS in one shot? In other words, how many surgeries? I've had three: Lap band, VSG, then mini DS.
  11. I had a c section and a lapband. and still had a laparascopic RNY. My roomate had adhesions between his band and his liver and other organs. it took them 4 hours to clean up and he still had a laparoscopic sleeve. I don't think i've ever heard of an open one being done (in the last 10 years or so). Unless you are over 600lbs, dr Now's show is not a good resource. Your own doctor is. adhesions are very routine in lapband revisions and those are done laparascopically every day.
  12. lots of people. me from the band. but same symptoms. GERD is a common sleeve complication as it is a band complication. revised to rny

Out With the Old--In With the New!

I so envy you all the food choices that we don’t have here. BUT - I am coming to the USA in September, Baltimore. So, once I know the hotel I will be sleeping in, I think I can place some orders and have them delivered to me there to bring home! I have been thinking about your calories post, a lot. I am still losing a kilo a week, I am below my best gastric band weight - which was my goal but I have revised the goal downward to the top of the BMI ‘not overweight’ range. I know I should, by surgeon’s predictions, be losing at half this rate by now. But I find myself loathe to let my calories go over 700. I have been considering that it might well be very easy for me to simply replace one eating disorder (overeating to deal with any emotion whatsoever) with another (caloric limitation and obsession)... So - thanks for raising this thinking for me, too. Will my relationship with food ever be normal?
  14. SIPS in Seattle

Tome off work - how much??

I work from home 100% of the time, I was off for 5 weeks. (Scheduled for 6, but only took 5) I was a revision from band to SIPS. Those first two weeks I don’t think I could have worked, I was so exhausted.
  15. Does anyone have any information on lapband after VSG surgery or have had it done and can share the experience? MGB or RNY was suggested as possible revisions but I fear these options due to the malabsorption. Thanks for any comments.
  16. Thought I'd add a couple other observations specific to Sleeve to SIPS revision: Compared to my VSG, the surgery and recovery for SIPS revision was a breeze. I was literally walking around a few hours after surgery and didn't feel the need to take a single pain or nausea pill afterward. Felt great the next day too. Back when I had the VSG, I slept for 3 days and was miserable. Stomach was fully bloated and entire lower portion turned an ugly black and blue a few days latter which lasted a week or so. I'm a little swollen after SIPS, but not as bad and no discoloration. Bottom line, the VSG procedure seems to be much more traumatic than the DS procedure. Given that my stomach wasn't touched, I was able to go to solid foods way faster. To be honest, I probably pushed it, but at the same time, I have yet to eat anything that's really pushed back at me (except for the need for a quick trip to the restroom). This was not the case with VSG Your milage may vary.
  17. Finally dropped 1 more pound after 6 days stuck at the exact same weight (which is in itself, kinda weird. Normally I bump around 1-2 lbs day-to-day) . I still don't understand why it's this slow, given that my eating is significantly curbed, and I hit the bathroom at least 5-6 times a day with frothy orange diarrhea; I haven't had a solid BM yet. I assume this is the new normal, and is the DS doing it's malabsorption thing Also, since posting, I spent some time reading through a ton of older posts, and it looks like sleeve to SIPS revisions is more common on this board than I would have thought (Is this a clue to anyone considering sleeve vs SIPS that Sleeve alone has high failure rate?) Seems like the results of SIPS revision are generally positive, but more Tortoise then Hair. It's feels a little frustrating compared to how fast I remember the lbs dropping initially with the sleeve, but then again, those came back after 6 months. So if the DS lbs come off and stay off.... totally worth it. Something to note: My BMI was under 40 when I got this latest revision, which is unusual. As a result, the Dr gave me a longer channel than he would have if I was in the 50's. Also, a couple of people have noted that speed of weight loss is slower the closer you started to goal weight, so I'm probably in that boat. Just gotta be patient i suppose.
  18. Id be interested to know what people's experiences have been also. I'm wanting a revision but totally unsure as to what as I've had very crappy results with my sleeve

Sleeve or bypass, how did you choose?

Lol, it’s ok.. takes a little to catch up.. this is my second time attempting the journey for approval(had to put things on hold in the past) so I’m familiar with the whole process. The RNY is the bypass.. the doctor was the first one to suggest it after reviewing medical history.. after my first visit with my nutritionist and her also learning my eating habits and my medical history she too suggested the RNY.. I’m 5’6 278 lbs with a BMI between 43-45 He said with the bypass and following physical therapy and nutritionist orders I can lose a little more than half my weight! (That would take so much pressure off my joints and my lower back) I have two small slipped disks in my lower back and need to lose this weight to avoid further damage(amongst other health issues that have been recently discovered) smh I’ve been chocolate free for almost 4 months.. I’ve been eating A LOT of sugar free cherry flavored jello lol.. helps with my sweet tooth.. also yogurts and bananas. I am trusting my Dr he’s been doing these types of surgeries since 1997 and believe he has seen enough since then to know what works best for the individual cases he’s dealing with. Definitely educate yourself on what’s best as well and discuss why you feel the other option is best? From what I’ve seen the support groups I’ve been to in the last three months they have a lot of lap banders and quite a few VSG coming back from other drs that had those procedures done and being revised to the RNY Good luck with your decision.. definitely make an informed decision.. the support groups helped me a lot as well with sticking with the RNY [emoji991] Instagram: milaalmodovar [emoji317] SC: almodovarmila
  20. Hi everyone It has been several months since I was on here . I am now at 262 lbs yaaa. but i have been at a stall because of a medical issue . I tried going back to my job in the oilfields and my functional capacity test was terrible the company made me lift 125lbs from floor to a shelf at chest level 15 times then walk 100ft with it and step up and down off a stool. 30 times. then walk back and do the shelf one again. had to do this 3 times. But long story short the drills were no problem but it ripped my hyadila hernia repair on my gastric sleeve. I passed my test but 3 days after I was having such severe pain and I couldn't eat much anymore it hurt bad to eat unless it was soft stuff so I ate a lot of mashed potatoes and gravy with ground meat for almost a year.( Forgot to say I had to resign from my job it hurt to bad). finally went back to my surgeon and he did all the tests and found that my stomach was falling out. It damaged my sleeve too. So I just had a revision surgery Apr 2 . Had a nice rip in there. took 9 or 10 stitches to fix and of coarse revised to a gastric bypass now. It has been a challenge to have this change a tablespoon size stomach lol I can do this I have been through it before and with all you great people supporting each other makes this so much easier. I am converting to my soft stage today . i had a tablespoon of salmon mixed with yogurt and seasonings of coarse. yummy . It was a good 30 minutes to eat that but it went well. I am going to attempt to attach before and after pictures. I should lose about another 50 lbs. with this surgery. doctor wants only 30 to 40 at the most ? his goal weight is 230 lbs. but he thinks it will go closer to 200lbs. as I am 6ft 2inches tall and haven't been 200lbs since 8th grade lol.
  21. You have been given a tool .not a fix. we all still have to make smart decisions after these surgeries. I had to have a revision because of making a decision to lift to much weight and ripped my hyadila hernia repair . thus causing more problems now that is fixed and I now have a Bypass instead of a sleeve . Just have to retrain myself and get in the right mind set to eat the right foods with this bypass. very little at a time . I lost all my appetite after this surgery .
  22. I had a revision from a sleeve to a gastric bypass . due to a hernia repair that ripped and damaged my sleeve and my diaphragm. it is tough eating but i am drinking at the least 130 oz a day in fluids and am just now starting on my soft food stage . I take Salmon and mix it well with plain yogurt and season salt. put in 1 oz cup and eat that every 2 hrs . plus all my drinks and such . Lots of ice pop's. protein shakes suck but have to get them in. and vitamins . only thing I am struggling with this time is constipation . haven't gained any weight after first surgery.. just stopped losing weight due to the soft foods I was eating were not on my list of healthy but they were easy to eat and didn't cause pain . now it is a struggle to eat anything over the size of a golf ball. Haven't figured out how to cook one of those down yet lol
  23. I have chosen the bypass BUT I now currently have the sleeve. I am getting a revision. i originally wanted the bypass 7 years ago but my then doctor convinced me to get the sleeve. I knew along I wanted to restriction and malabsorption but I didn’t fight for it. So go with your gut...maybe the pun is intended lol

    Anyone have a revision?

I had the sleeve in 2006. I had some success but learned to eat around the band and gained enough back to want revision surgery. I’m 5 weeks post op with the sleeve. I don’t feel restricted like many of the sleevers who did not have revision. There is some but not like with my band. I’m only down 8 lbs since surgery but only have 32 pounds until I reach goal so weight loss is expected to be slow. My advice to you is figure out what motivates you to stay on plan, follow the plan, get your exercise, and log EVERYTHING! Head hunger is a b***h!

    Keto working-but still GERD

I suspect that you are headed toward revision, given your lifelong experience with this, but there are always things that should be tried before going for surgical solution. Given your history, I suspect that you have tried most of the various tricks and treatments for GERD, such as sleeping with head elevated, not eating X hours before bedtime, etc. There are some books out there by MDs who specialize in the problem that may give some more insight. One common thread seems to be that dietary fat may be contributory to the problem, so your keto efforts may be working against you if that is the case (OTH it may have little to do with it and is just a throwback to the days when low fat diets would fix anything, much as low carb diets are today's universal solution.) It may be worth a try to shift your dietary balance for a while and see if it has any effect on you, There are also some foods that supposedly help or hinder the functioning of the lower esophageal sphincter, and likewise some medications that target it, so those are things to explore. Given your history, I assume that shifting meds may have been discussed - transitioning from PPI to H2 inhibitors such as Zantac or Pepcid - they are generally somewhat less effective but generally preferable from the long term use perspective. Given that you are still seeing reflux evidence in the EGD even on the PPI, it is unlikely to make a significant difference as symptomatic relief doesn't necessarily mean that the problem doesn't still exist and is doing damage, but it is something else worth considering. Historical curiousity - back in the dark ages, vagotomies were performed, severing part of the vagus nerve to disable some of the protein pump ports as a chronic reflux treatment; this was obsoleted by the introduction of PPIs, but maybe it's time to reintroduce the "old school". Good luck in working through this.....
