    Feeling Defeated

Agreed, the preop diet was horrible and I also felt like giving up before I had even started! But rest assured, you will have such a small appetite afterwards, broth is probably the only thing you want. Because they remove 80% of your stomach doing a sleeve, all those grehlin cells that lived inside your tummy are gone too. So your hunger pangs disappear as well. I am nearly 5 years out, and still can't get halfway through a regular meal. I am just so full! It's a physical thing (tiny tummy) and a hormone thing (grehlin). After nearly 5 years...I have had my ups (amazing weight loss) and downs (miserable because I can't eat very much, and definitely not my once favourite foods). If food is your "thing", then you need to be prepared that this will change forever.
  2. Hello all, This is my first post ☺️ I had gastric band procedure done about 10 years ago. I recently had a CT scan and it showed my common bile duct is dilated up to 1.4cm! All the rest of the scan looks good and my blood work is normal. I have read some studies suggesting that weight loss surgeries can cause common bile duct dilation but the studies are referring to bypass and sleeve surgeries. Does anyone have a similar issue with a lap band or any insight on this? Thank you in advance 🦋🌻

    Lap band questions

Hi guys I couldn't do it anymore. I went back and got an unfil there like are u sure youve already lost 10lbs in a week i said um ya cuz I haven't eaten or drank anything in 2 weeks so they took the whole fill out. So now I'm back to 7cc in a 10cc band. Now I can eat now it's up to me to put the right things in my body to continue to loose weight it felt soooo good to drink water normally before I got it looser it was a sip of water and then it would sit on my chest going down so so so slowly it would take me all day to finish a 20oz water bottle no that's not normal alot is mind over matter few weeks ago I would like binge eat chips at night idk wtf that was about then I had a realization kick in why do that to myself when I went thru agony not being able to keep things down .....suffer lol throwing up. . for what to eat chips and then be stuck at one weight no no no so like movie night last night instead of chips I cut some bell pepper and had 2 with hummus and it was GOOD!

    Missed period

I was 17 days late in August and when I went to my annual exam, my GYN explained that it's very likely from the weight loss I've had. He did mention to keep tracking them and if anything is continuing to be off, then he'll order testing to check for anything that could be the culprit. My next period was a week early, so I believe it has to do with the weight loss.

    69 yrs old and unsure..

Good luck to you! I'm 64, really glad I did the surgery, even considerding I'm a slow loser! A couple years back, I was already fluffy at 185 pounds, had to go on streoids for about 2 years and put on 40 pounds, All my labs went up! HGA1C was so high I was one pound away from being diabetic. I'm now normal blood sugar, cholestrol normal, off blood pressure meds, down 46 pounds. But at 9 months out I still need to lose another 20-30 pounds. I'd like to get down in the low 150s. This is not about looking good in a bikini but getting health again. I do not regret having the surgery at all. I wish I had done it sooner, but it does have to be the right time to put the time and energy into it. I do worry about the 15-20 pounds they say is normal to regain right after you hit the bottom weight. The hair loss that started at 3-4 months post op is slowing down, good thing becuase I only have so much hair.

    OFFICIALLY LOST 100LB

Congrats! That is wonderful, I don't think I'm going to get to 100 pounds. I'm 9 months out, down 46 pounds and still working on 1-2 pounds at a time. If I could do the protein shakes for 3 weeks I could probably dump a huge amount of weight at one time. But thats keto and hard to stick to! Some people can do it, I get to low energy. I'm trying one day a week do just protein drinks all day! I'm encouraged by all of you!

    Head hunger.

Sounds yummy. If you can make it with spray pam instead of oil or butter it would be even better for you. Maybe a little cinnamon and sweetener. i like to make s’mores in banana boats. I use sugar free choc chips and almonds or pecans instead of graham crackers so the only bad thing really is the marshmallows. It’s still higher calories and not necessarily for weight loss phase but for maintenance for me it’s a healthy-ish alternative to s’mores Have you considered a bariatric therapist to try to get to the root of the head hunger. A lot of people swear that this has helped them tremendously.

Hello all, I was wondering if any fellow Michiganders that have any tips on the best insurance for weight loss surgery. My employer has open enrollment and I’m thinking about switching insurances to a plan that has a shorter wait time for approval. My current plan is a year. Thanks

    Carbs yes or no

yeah, in MY experience, going keto/low-carb is very effective for losing weight rapidly in a relatively short amount of time. BUT...maintaining this lifestyle long term is challenging for most (not all, but MOST) The problem with us as a community has always been KEEPING the weight OFF (i mean how many times in the past have we lost a bunch of weight only to gain it back, and sometimes plus more) So when most (not all!) get to the keto/low-carb burnout phase, or just slowly let things slide, there needs to be another plan in place to maintain one's current weight and usually thats just finding your own balance of calories and activity level...and make that your lifestyle. P.S. not to say that Keto/low-carb is not an unattainable lifestyle choice. i have several friends who have done this for many years (and one who's been at it for over 20 years!) ...interestingly enough none of whom have ever been obese...not sure if there is a correlation there...

    Missed period

Hi ladies. Any updates? I ask bc I’m kind of starting to panic. I have regular periods, and I’m now 2 weeks late, and I’m 5 weeks post opp. I do ovulation tracking with sticks and so far no LH surge has been detected. I also have taken 2 pregnancy tests and they’re negative. I don’t feel pregnant (I could tell with my child before before even testing) but I’m still nervous. We do want to add a baby in the future but not unless and before the weight stabilizes. I really hope it is the Hormonal changes from the surgery.
  11. Was your surgery for bypass? I just got my revision done last week just wondering how the weight loss goes after. Thanks for responding. Sent from my SM-S906U using BariatricPal mobile app

    I just don't know

I'm not a relationship expert either. However, based on what you've shared, I would guess it's insecurity. When you were obese, perhaps he didn't worry about other men being interested in you, but he could see this as a real possibility now that you've lost so much weight. He may simply need reassurance of your commitment to him. This should be obvious after 20 years, but your circumstances have changed. Even if we know it's true, we all want to hear our partners tell us that they love us and would never leave us!
  13. Hi David, Well I have some gerd with weight gain with my vsg surgery which was in 2018. So last year I asked if I can get resleeved due to the weight gain and slight gerd issues. and i was told in California they don’t do that the only option I had was bypass, So I went with that..my surgery was cancelled at 0100 last year due to my iron levels. I had to do the 10 week class as part of the revision requirements. So I’m all cleared now (this year) i plan on doing things way different this time around and actually puttin in the work..with my sleeve I didn’t workout or anything (I don’t advise that all) plus we were in the pandy sooooooo crossing fingers that I find things that help me along this new journey so I stay consistent but it’s all mental Honestly!
  14. Hi David. Have you met with your surgeon yet? They will likely have an opinion of which surgery they feel is best for you. If you are on certain medications they may trend towards sleeve IF all other things are equal but if you have GERD they typically lean towards bypass (not always though). Those are not the only factors and it’s not exactly that clear cut. It certainly doesn’t hurt to do your research but you surgeon should help considerably to make this decision. Mine said he would do sleeve or bypass (if I really wanted it) but he recommended sleeve. He thought bypass was overkill for me and the NP thought because of my medications that the conservative option was safer. I didn’t lose all the weight I hoped though and struggle to keep it off. I will always sorta wonder if I would’ve lost more with bypass. Who knows though. I am on medication that causes weight gain so I may be in the same exact boat with bypass. It’s really hard to say. They are both really good surgeries, though. Regardless of whether I can fit into my skinny jeans I am very happy I did the surgery. I was already beginning to have knee pain with exercise and I know that at the rate I was going I would be even heavier now than I was pre surgery with more knee pain so the Fact that I am maintaining anywhere below that weight and pain free is better than I could’ve done on my own. I didn’t have to decide on which surgery until my pre op appointment. Hopefully your team will give you time to make your decision too.

Wow, now that's worth considering. I've had IBS since my teens. Thanks. I just noticed your weight loss - 180lbs in 3 months? Wow, just wow.

I'm going through Franciscan Center for Weight Management, David Swedler, DO. I've made it through my insurance company requirements and was certified for sleeve, but I'm on the fence now between that and bypass. Do you have a preference yet? Congrats on getting started!

Wow, 30 pills! This does make me feel better. I'm still going to ask my surgeon and PCP, but I've been reading that Cox-1 specific NSAIDS liike Celebrex and Mobic are ok for regular use. I'm on Mobic (meloxicam) for osteoarthritus. I realize the need may be reduced after weight loss but age could bring it back and NSAIDS are about all there is for this. On malabsorbtion, after looking at all the surgical schematics which distort the dimensions, I thought maybe it was only a foot bypassed. It's actually up to 5 feet which I guess could make some difference. Still, that's out of 26 feet of small intestines. I think I'm going to stop worrying about dumping. It sounds like something that can be controlled and may happen with either surgery. GERD concerns me more. I was concerned about it because I have IBS and diarrhea with cramps has been a nemisis for a long time 😣

    Finally got a date!!!

To add to @SpartanMaker’s list, spare knickers or disposable underwear - diarrhoea is a real possibility & attacks can be extremely sudden. your own pjs, soap/shower gel. I found putting on my own pjs & using my own shower gel much nicer & sort of soothing than wearing the hospital gown & using their awful anti bacterial soap stuff all your prescribed medication in unopened boxes/bottles. Actually I know three others who also have had surgery (different weight & ages) & none of us needed a cane, stomach binder or couldn’t sleep in our bed from day one so I don’t know about ‘most’ needing those sorts of support equipment. Think it’s very individual. Save your money unless you actually need them. All the best.

    Sleeping

I slept in bed from immediately after my surgery. No need for extra pillows, a wedge or anything. I’m a side sleeper & often sleep with a twist so my bottom half is 3/4 over & slept that way in hospital too. Didn’t have any issue getting in or out of bed either. Was careful though just in case. I do have a high bed which may have helped 🤷🏻‍♀️ but I could get off my couch without issue too. Was the same after I had my gall removed. I guess it’s another one of those individual things. Like some find they need a binder & others don’t. It may depend on your surgery & whether you had anything else done like a hernia repair. It could depend on how much weight you carry & where you carry it (like a lot in your abdominal region). Who knows???
  22. Wow, my first wls was done on 08/01/2014. My highest recorded weight was 289 and that was underestimate. I am currently 215. I have GERD & 2 hernias! I am in pain each day. I work full-time and have insurance. I found a new doctor. It appears, he is in my corner. I have 2 avenues to pay for this revision. Remember that you are important and obesity is a real disease. Bariatric friendly alcoholic drinks?

i stopped drinking in the first day of my 2 week pre-op diet. And no, i didn't have to take a blood-alcohol test at any time. Had my first drink (2-3 sips of red wine) at around 3 weeks post op. Had my 2nd (partial) drink around 2-3 months post which gave me one of the worst dumping experiences i have had to date (it was a sugary soju-sake cocktail). I had maybe 4-5 (partial) drinks during weight loss phase: vodka sodas or very dry red wine. Now im just a normal regular drinker for the most part (but i still try to stay away from overly sugary drinks). Im 4 years post op.

    August surgery buddies!

I had my surgery 8/19 and I've lost 26 pounds so far. 41 total from when I started this journey. I still have weight to lose, but what is weird to me is that I feel the opposite. I feel so thin. I know I'm still overweight and need to lose more but feel like a normal person now. I look in the mirror and I can see I'm still fat, but I guess because I know how big I was I feel like I'm much thinner now. I've been losing slowly and I get frustrated, but when I put on my clothes I feel happy. It's almost like I feel thinner than I am. I guess that is a good thing because it has boosted my self esteem. So I guess what I'm saying is I must have reverse body dysmorphia because I'm still a fat girl who feels like she is a thin girl. I'll take it. I'm so much happier than I was 40 lbs ago.

    August surgery buddies!

I am 8 weeks out as well. I've lost 29 pounds but can't see it at all, either. I am down about a size, though. I'm not too worried about body dysmorphia yet. I'll be concerned if I lose all the weight I'm shooting for and still think I am fat. I had a roommate in college exactly like that, in the days before we knew what eating disorders were. I was stalled for 3 weeks, then lost 5, now stalled again. Frustrating, but I guess normal. I agree it's helpful to have others going through the same process. I spend a lot of time here and on Reddit.
