    PCOS and hormone struggles

    Thanks for your response and the links. I am about 5 weeks out. I am typically a fast eater but I use a bariatric app now to time my eating. (Which felt so silly until I realized I needed to take more time) I track everything less for the calories and more to make sure I hit that protein goal so I know I am usually hitting the 60g or slightly surpassing it for 3 weeks straight now. Fluids was a struggle and hitting 60oz is hard for me. I get into that range most days like it might come out 50ish oz a day on average for the past two weeks so maybe that is the problem (I did admit this to my doctor as well) I don't drink at all after eating I figured out quickly that was a ticket to barftown. Meats are just not my friend. Chicken specifically my stomach just automatically rejects it in any form including pureed. Fish will stay down but I'm only gonna get a couple of bites from that. Most my protein is coming from eggs, Greek yogurt, cottage cheese and protein shakes. So I think when I said that to my surgeon that was her red flag for gallbladder but I guess I'll find that out in April. I am not on the strict only three meals a day routine they set for me and my surgeon is okay with that because I'm only getting a few bites for meal times unless it straight up broth then I can do 4oz. I kind of just eat every 4 hours and use a food scale to figure out how much I ate each time. However reading your post I think maybe I'll stay away from the scale until I can hit the water goal more consistently. My next appointment is 6 weeks out (I don't think I can wait until then to see where I am because if I step on that scale six weeks later and I'm still 199 my heart will just shatter) and because I go through the VA I think that might be my last or I have to pay out of pocket so I am panicking more that I'm not on track. Like if I was progressing better I would feel more confident without that support and I know when I only have the VA to lean on then I am pretty much on my own no one is going to help me trouble shoot there.     Week 2

    I wanted to list my experiences to see if others have the same and what they have done I have not experienced dumping yet. I often forget to not drink and eat at the same time. I was surprised I am ok. I am hungry often. Getting protein is a nonstop struggle.. I found out split pea soup has a lot of protein so I put it in a blender and eat it. Muscle milk, and protein shakes with fresh fruit. Protein shakes, if they are to thick, hurt me. I have ate vegan for three years. I am not super excited about not eating vegan. But, I feel in the first few weeks it is easier and I am ok with that. BUT I took a bite of scrambled eggs and it HURT. I am scared to try dairy because I have not had these things in over 3 years. Before surgery if I accidentally ate dairy, meat, etc it hurt my stomach. Has anyone had experiences with trying it after being vegan for awhile? I am moving to soft foods and I would like some ideas. I saw people eat oatmeal and potates and both are on my list of foods to avoid. Ideas? Please share your experiences with me.

    Hello! I’m new here

    It’s quite common to have some worries & questions. As you says you’ve never done this before & don’t know what to expect. Everyone here is happy to share their experiences & offer suggestions & tips though we can & do have different experiences pre & post surgery. So if you have a question or a want clarification, don’t hesitate to ask. For most the change in your tastebuds ( &/or smell) after surgery is temporary. Personally I chose to embrace the too sweet & didn’t introduce it back into my eating & that included all sugars: real, artificial & alternatives. What can happen is you start to embrace new flavours you hadn’t tried before & discover a new appreciation for ones you didn’t previously like. I only had about 6 weeks between the day I woke up & decided enough of being fat I want to have surgery. I did a lot of my own research & spoke with a friend who’d had the surgery. I think that looking at what you’re eating & your portion size is a good place to begin. Start making small changes to get into new habits. @Tomo is right there are some negative things online - like many Facebook groups & some personal videos. Go to the experts. I recommend videos by Dr John Pilcher & Dr Matthew Weiner - very informative if you’re interested. And of course here. PS. I loved your comment about wanting to jump on a trampoline. I did that at Christmas with my 5 - 9 year old nieces & nephew. We had a ball especially as they bounced me so hard I fell over … twice (& I’m almost 58). Would not have done that before surgery. Not sure I’ll be climbing trees though 😁 .

    Stall

    I had surgery on March 3rd. I weighed 202 on the morning of surgery and lost 9 lbs the first week. I then stalled for 7 days but have started losing again this week. My initial 9 pound loss included a lot of water weight (at least 4 to 5 pounds). My second week stall was my body replenishing the excess depleted water to normalize the body's healthy hydration levels. During that stall, for every depleted water pound I was "regaining", I was actually losing a fat pound. So although the scales showed no pounds lost, I actually restored the body's healthy fluid levels and lost an equal amount of fat pounds.
  5. Everyone’s surgon is different. If yours is large then maybe he does need to do them at different times. My HH surgery was years ago & the recovery was pretty easy. When I had my GB my esophagus was it an L-shaped. I’m retired, the surgery itself was pretty easy. It’s getting your body used to your new stomach and your new way of eating. You are going to be weak for about a week to 10 days afterwards because your body is just gone through major change.

    I had my first champagne about 6 weeks after my sleeve and I've drunk carbonated drinks ever since - doesn't bother me but I think there's a LOT of variation. It's one of those things I would take very easy first time round and give yourself plenty of time between sips (to buuuuuuurp - a lot LOL!) Also be really careful with alcohol - you may find your tolerance is virtually zero after surgery.

    Takes time for the body to adjust. I started to lose after 3 months. Then stall and now I’m loosing again. Metabolism, water, medication , too much food, too little food, hormones, all play into and and everyone is different. Trust the process and you will start to see changes.

    I have Pcos as well. Now, I was told this surgery may eliminate the pcos all together. I am 4 weeks post Op from the sleeve. Now, the good thing is doing this we cut all that bad stuff out of our diet. So, my advice is to just follow the surgeons message and wait. Trust me I am too. But, this will work its proven too.     You're less than 2 weeks out from major surgery. You're eating almost nothing. Be gentle with yourself and patient with your new stomach. You're healing. You'll be fine.
  10. im roughly 6 weeks out and am finding weight is coming off a bit quicker than it was (but im a lower BMI to begin with, so not as quick as many). i think it is REALLY important to NOT compare yourself to others. Its really hard NOT to do, I know, but if you are doing what you are supposed to, and being HONEST about that, than it will work. the SURGERY does not fail, PEOPLE do. Also often we lose inches and not numbers on the scale, and vice versa. important to not only go by ONE metric. I only do my measurements once a month (i weight twice a week) and am dying to do my measurements again but am forcing myself to wait till the 1st. lol its painful at this point LOL hang in there everyone!

  12. I too am suffering with fatigue. One pool exercise routine and I’m exhausted but not every day. Some days getting up is a challenge. I don’t like cold, so hope it’s that. I walked two miles one evening, it was great, but next morning was exhausted. Blood work seems ok. Yes I’m 70, but this is weird. I read some COVID patients experience this much later. I can’t seem to get answers. I take my multi vitas, Protein, vitamin B12 and Vita D 50K per week. Go to gym almost every day for pool or walk, bike, so trying to build muscle. Slow looser. Sleeve last July. Lost 30 lbs so far, so it’s not that I’m depleted. Ughh

    First Post - Surgery Scheduled April 12

    First off, I'm so sorry for your loss. 2nd, don't psyche yourself out on the 2 weeks pre-op diet. Just remind yourself of your whys. Towards the end of the two weeks of course it gets harder and you want to cave but let the surgery be your motivation. As summerseeker said, I was one that only told a small circle about my surgery. My main reason was that I didn't want to be talked out of it. No one understands your struggles like you do. I also agree about not starting it too soon and recommend the fair life shakes. The chocolate ones are my favorite and 7 months out I still enjoy them.
  15. I was sleeved on Jan 31st, 2023 and I’m 8 weeks out. The diet plan my doctor has me on allows me to start eating chicken at 8 weeks (which I hit yesterday) but when I eat it, it always leaves me feeling not so great. I’ve had very small pieces in soups before the 8 weeks and that didn’t bother me at all. But now that it’s by itself, it’s giving me some discomfort. Has anyone else had a similar issue? And if so, has it gotten better with time?

    Gastric Bypass Surgery

    I just got back my blood test and everything was good but my AST was almost out of range and my ALT was out of range at 35. I noticed it climbing every blood test. I'm at 1 year 7 months after my RNY revision. I was so concerned so I did a search here and found this. Thank you. I don't drink or do any of those "don't do this or it'll hurt you liver" things, even the diet no nos are not foods that I normally like, so I wasn't sure what is causing this. I have a check up with my bariatric team in a couple weeks but seeing this calmed me. Thanks again!
  17. Not eating or drinking is the worst thing you can do if it is hypoglycaemia. Any electrolyte/energy drink will help (I usually use hydralyte but forgot it the day I had the awful attack). I also used to carry a protein bar. What do you mean by DS? I sometimes experience stress induced foamies. It’s become a bit of a learnt behaviour when I go out. And can occur an hour or so after eating. I had a couple of experiences when I was out which caused me to start worrying it might happen again & then it often does. It’s like getting anxious tightens everything up & … foamies. Only started last year- 3 years out. I know it’s me & am working my way through it. Have spoken to my surgeon’s colleague about it & she confirmed my thinking.

    5 Pounds lost in 6 weeks?

    Wow, very noticeable difference!! Nicely done and I hope you find that visual progress encouraging! 😁 A few thoughts- 1) you've just passed a month since major surgery and your body is working hard to recovery, repair and get you back out there to your active life 🤗 I'm just a couple weeks from my bypass and working on talking to myself/honoring my body, sometimes with humor 😅 but acknowledging "my body is amazing, and strong, look how well I'm recovering", stuff like that. 2) your food plan looks good to me 3) while you can't actually build brand new muscle without being in a calorie surplus, I wouldn't be surprised if getting back to working out after a lull could cause some micro tissue tears and some water retention 4) need new scale batteries? Lastly, I don't know if you'd have access to one somewhere, but a BodPod uses air displacement (something like that) to accurately measure fat vs non-fat. It was so enlightening to me to see that pre -surgery, I legitimately could burn 3000 cals on an active day, even at 5'4 😅 because of my build. Anyhow, I just needed to know that, so when the scale wasn't moving I could say "science!!" If I'm eating 500 cals and burning even just 2000, I will eventually see it on the scale or tape measure. The body is just going to process weight loss and healing in its own sweet time. All that to say, it must really be disheartening to not see the numbers change after all your hard work and I hope you find some answers. Maybe for now frame your loss since Christmas or New Year's, because you've lost so much! Good luck to you!
  19. Hello, I just had my fistula surgery on 3/13 like you, my original surgery was in 2007. I did awesome for the first 5 years then I started gaining. I just figured I was a failure and accepted it. Fast forward 2022, I have a 9 cm umbilical hernia. Went to UPMC and they told me they wouldn't repair it and go back to where I got the bypass. I went and through all the testing and that's how they found my 2.5 cm fistula. Lot of drama with the insurance company and I ended up having to pay out of my pocket. When I woke up from surgery, I found out it was a bigger mess than they expected. They had to remove a bunch of adhesions, I actually had 2 fistula, my stoma at the bottom of my pouch was completely closed and that part of my intestines were attached to my remnant stomach. Essentially it was like I never had the bypass. They had to remove part of my pouch and intestines and remove almost all of my remnant stomach. Sent from my SM-G973U using BariatricPal mobile app

    How are you feeling? Doing ok, just started the purée stage, which last for 2 weeks. The first week was the hardest. It’s gotten much easier :-)
  21. Sorry it's been so rough! I had 24 hours of puking around 4 post-op and it was terrible, so my heart goes out to you. I hope your recovery starts snowballing now and a week from today you feel *normal*🤗 My plan counts protein drinks and soups towards liquids 100%. ( And for the record my "output" has been regular and the right color and whatnot, so I've not had reason to second guess it). I didn't love premeir protein's clear, but I could keep down propel (the individual sticks) either in hot water or well-watered down. I also love Lonolife powdered bone broth, it has 10 grams of protein and just settled really well. Lastly, a protein drink (fairlife or premeir), 8 oz of skim Fairlife milk, and then 8 oz of decaf coffee has really been helping me get down protein (43 grams) and fluid (~32 oz). It just seems to settle better than a straight up protein drink. It just takes a couple hours to drink, but I don't mind sipping on it that long 😅 Lastly, I did try mixing some powdered pb or regular pb into a blended shake because my plan okayed that. That can bump up calories 👍 I just need to taste something different/different consistency, so I haven't done it again. There were a few days there everything tastes weird and nasty, but thankfully that has gone for the most part!

    Solid solid point. I think I just expected to still lose weight while gaining muscle, I have been pretty rotund so I wanted to be able to see muscle as opposed to just my own roundness. I have decided I'm not going to weigh myself till next month and maybe check every two weeks after that. Yeah, Im thinking I'll leave the groups. Seeing other peoples posts and the responses in them is really disheartening. I will say that I took a picture at the gym and compared it to my 1 week pre-op picture and I can definitely see a difference (I'll attach it cause Im so pleased)! I'm still going to talk to my doctor next Monday and get his opinion to make sure I'm going about things the correct way.
  23. Congrats, I’m so excited for you! I’ve been on the forums here with you for a bit and remember your surgery getting postponed 😭 but now it’s finally happening! Yay! I had my surgery on 3/13, so one week out. If I could give you one piece of advice, it would be: have a heating pad nearby!! It helps with pain and gas and is my “bff” these days lol Good luck!! Let us know how it went. We are rooting for you.
  24. Hi all, new here. Well, of course I've lurked here at times over the years but ran away every time.. A little bit about me, been heavy most of my adult life, managed to live fine keeping most side effects at bay. Sleep apnea, use a machine, HBP under control with meds. No diabetes or other issues. Three years ago I hit my highest at 450 and as covid got rolling I started to exercise a bit more and watch diet a bit better. Then all the wheels started to fall off lol. Knees giving me some problems which then led me to find out I was bone on bone for both knees. So I continued to get better on the diet and switched to biking and rowing. Phentermine/Topiromate helped along the way and ultimately lost about a hundred pounds. Had to stop those though when I had an Afib incident. Kept myself in the 350 range but man has this plateau been tough. Doc has me on ozempic, A1C was also starting to creep up, to see if that will help but it really hasn't done much. I'm ok with diet but still not where i need to be to lose another 75 pounds, which is my target to get knee surgery. I truly believe that once I get my knees fixed I can be active enough to aid the weight loss. It's tough now with the knee. So why am I here.... well my Primary and my cardiologist have both said it's time to really think about surgery. They both feel there are too many metabolic/hormonal challenges to continue my same approach. I met with the surgeon yesterday and he's recommended a sleeve. I'm at my whits end and feel like I have no other choice, but at the same time I read these stories about GERD, constipation and all these other side effects I turn around and say eff it, it's just not worth it. At least I'll die happy... I know, not exactly healthy, but I'm being honest... I've started the process, have a meeting with Nutritionist next week and psych and Endoscopy are after that. Likely can't get this done until August so I have some time to reconcile in my head the future, but right now I'm a bit overwhelmed and a little defeated. I'm going to poke around here some more, thanks for reading. Mark
  25. I'm 5 days post-op and basically just getting started with my water intake because I've been in the hospital this whole time (I caught the flu the day after my surgery). My doctor says all she cares about is me getting my water in, but try protein shakes if I can. Well, with the 1 million meds I need to take and all the puking and diarrhea I've had - I REALLY need the nutrition. She told me that the shakes count towards the liquids to reach my goal - does that mean I can alternate between a sip of water, sip of shake, sip of water, etc? Or do I have to wait 15 mins between each substance? I ask because the shakes make me thirsty and I can only handle about 3 sips of shake per day before I get grossed out. It's been a tough recovery. 😢
