  1. Ok so I am 10 days post op and the constipation is real 2 days ago I thought I had it worked out after 2 days of max dosage of colase and a suppoitory but now its back and even more vengeful. After the last bout I stopped taking any medication that had constipating side effects because no amount of pain or nausea is worth this. Probably TMI but it is like rock hard... Any suggestions? How long does this last?

A year and a half post op

a 10-20 lb gain after you hit your lowest weight is actually very common. That's why some people intentionally go 10-20 lbs below their goal, to give themselves a cushion in case they have the infamous "rebound". also, being able to handle a whole slice of pizza given how far out you are from surgery isn't unusual, either. I can usually handle two pieces now (depending on how big the slices are). This is opposed to half a large pizza, which I used to be able to eat before surgery. I have to average 1500-1700 calories a day to maintain my weight. Too many days over that, and my weight starts heading north. That range is going to vary for everyone, though - some can eat more, some less. If you're not happy where you are and want to lose more weight, then calculate how many calories a day you're currently eating, and cut back from that. I don't think I eat much differently now than a lot of my never-been-overweight women friends who watch their weight. Which is, of course, a lot more than I ate the first few months post-surgery. When I go out to a restaurant, I'll have a slice or two of pizza. Or I'll order an appetizer or a salad. Or I'll order an entree and eat half of it. but again, if you're not happy with where you're at, then you'll need to create a calorie deficit in order to start losing again.

    Revision time

I know what ya mean about losing too low and looking sickly. When I hit 164 my mom said I needed to stop. My face was drawn in and the skin was worse too ! I would actually like to hit 160 and hold there. I figure it will take me 3 months to lose 25 lb. I had already started struggling just to get a few pounds off and it sucks because a year ago I could do it without too much issue. So yes, I will be sticking to the 5 lb rule which worked very well for me until I decided to use covid as an excuse to gain 10 lbs !
  4. I can't get over how well things have gone for me. It shows that if you really commit and dedicate yourself to a new way of life you can achieve anything. i spent half my life overweight and obese and never could see the end of the tunnel until I found out about health insurance will cover most of my surgery here in Australia. My highest weight got up to 322 in 2018 and I felt sick looking in the mirror, was so unhealthy and unfit. i researched everything for months before I found the right surgeon for me and it was so refreshing to find a surgeon who actually cares and I didn't have too many actual prerequisites for surgery really. my BMI was 43 and I had multiple co-morbidities and now my BMI is 22.7 It was a pretty simple process took about 3 months and starting Weight was at 322lbs; I knew I had 3 months wait so I decided myself to start my diet early and I was able to shed 65lbs before surgery and was 257 surgery day Oct 28th 2019. and today 8.5 months since I started my diet and 6.5 months post surgery my lowest weight this week was 168lbs 😊 I've pretty much been in maintenance now a few weeks anyway most days weighing in between 168-170 and feel like a brand new man. i just want everyone to know it is possible to reach your goals as I exceeded all mine. i barely recognise myself when I look in the mirror. I've added before and after photos below feel free to comment.

    Revision time

I was at 150 for about 2-3 years (my lowest point was 138, but it gradually went back up and I settled at 150 for a very long time - which was great because I think 138 was way too low for me. I could see every rib and my face looked awful. 150 was actually the perfect weight for me). But last fall I was abroad for the whole month of October, and then came back in time for the holidays. By the first of January, I was at 160. And freaked. I've been really working at getting that off because I want to be back down to 150, but it is S-L-O-W going - about 1-2 lbs a month. But since I am, according to the BMI chart, 3 to 4 lbs "overweight" (depending on the day), I wasn't too surprised by that. So hopefully by July or so I'll be back to where I want to be. a word to the wise - once you get to where you want to be, do whatever you can to avoid gaining weight. It is a b*tch to take off, even if it's just 5 or 10 lbs! (I used to roll my eyes at these normal weight or slightly overweight women who would complain about how hard it was to lose five lbs. HA! I could have done that in a weekend! But now I get it...)
  6. Hello everyone, I honestly never do this but I'm beyond desperate and need to see if anyone has in the past or is experiencing what I am. I had gastric sleeve done end of Oct of 2018 and on 2019 I had revision done to bypass. I have suffered from GERD since I was 16 and I am now 44. The reason I mention this is because I had revision done supposedly because my GERD was causing extreme burning sensations im my throat and mouth. Well here it is 7 months after my revision and the sensations and feelings I had are back again at full force and even worse. I honestly do not know of this is even GERD at this point anymore. I am going to try to explain exactly what it is I feel. It feels like my mouth and throat are literally burned and scalded like if you drank something to hot. I also smell a burning smell almost all the time. These feelings progress through my day and get worse and worse as I eat and drink throughout the day. I have noticed chewing gum helps especially the mint type and if I drink it subsides for a little bit but then gets even worse. This contradicts everything about GERD because GERD is supposed to get worse when you chew gum or at least that's what my GI said. Also even if I go to bed like this it doesn't wake me up like you would think with the burning. I know what heartburn feels like dealing with it I was 16 this isn't heartburn. I'm miserable all the time. I cry myself to sleep because no one can figure what is going on. I feel like no doctors understand or believe me. I honestly have no idea what to do at this point. I've tried googling my symptoms and cant seem to find anything. As much as I love the fact that I've lost all this weight I honestly regret it. I want to feel normal again. To not be suffering all day and trying to act like nothing is wrong when I'm in so much pain and discomfort. Please if anyone is experiencing this or has HELP I'm begging.

    Going Vegan After Sleeve

Congratulations for working towards a plant based diet. I am 5 months post op, and it is absolutely doable! As for protein, there are so many options. Let me count some ways....broccoli, beans, legumes, nuts, peanut butter, chia seeds, hemp hearts(omega 3), nutritional yeast, tofu, tempeh, setian, viral wheat gluten, most plant based pastas, quinoa, sprouted grains, oats, nut butters...ooh boy! That was a lot 🤣😂 There really is a lot of options out there. I have started to make my own unmeat crumbles. I didn’t learn this way overnight, but I didn’t get this fat overnight neither. My thinking on this WLS for me, is I took a drastic change to lose the weight, and I took a drastic change to keep it off. I comend anyone who is changing there lifestyle after this surgery. My surgery date was 12-12-19, and I have lost 68 lbs. I am living my best life, and I feel the best I have ever felt!

    Hate bypass

That was my weight loss about the 6 month post sleeve weight, which is when I stopped posting. I lost another 10 lbs , then gained about 10 back in the last year once my GERD got really bad. Almost 55 lbs, gained back 10, now lost 15. So, all and all 5 lbs less then before GERD. Original BMI 35.5
  10. Well, from my experience, developing or worsening GERD after the sleeve is on a case-by-case basis. While there are some studies out there that indicate GERD suffers have a higher incidence of GERD or worsening GERD after the sleeve, there are similar studies showing the risk of developing or worsening GERD is negligible. A good friend and associate of mine had a lap band and got GERD so bad that she developed Barrett's esophagus. Her surgeon did a sleeve on her and her GERD is all but gone and the Barrett's resolved. Me, I also had a lap band and suffered from reflux the entire time (later I found that my band was slipped, but that's a whole other post). I DIDN'T have any signs of chronic reflux when I went to the SAME doctor but was warned that there are risks of GERD. Cutting to the chase, we decided that the risk was minimal and I had the sleeve. About a month or so after surgery, I started getting heartburn. This heartburn was easily remedied by PPIs. However, I still suffer from flare-ups of esophagitis (long term inflammation from GERD) and take Carafate. I also practice A LOT of lifestyle modifications to reduce my symptoms. Currently, my GI doc and I are investigating long term management. He mentioned the LINX system, but I don't want anything implanted in my body (I didn't have a good response to the lap band and its components). SO...there's another procedure that uses radio waves to thicken the lower esophageal sphincter. It's called STRETTA. I'm planning on doing the Stretta procedure. My insurance has denied and I've exhausted my appeals. Right before the COVID-19 crisis started, we were in discussions for cash payment. So, we're on hold right now. My symptoms are actually pretty good right now, so it's not urgent or anything. BUT, I don't want to be on PPIs for the rest of my life and I'm DARN TIRED of sleeping on a 12-inch wedge.
  11. No. For a while I couldn't break 800 calories until about 9-10 months. My injury occurred about 6 months out of surgery, curbing my exercise substantially and then depression hit and I lost myself for a good 3 months towards the end of 2019. I stopped tracking in my app but I would put myself at 1200-1400 calories during that time. Got it together in January when I was about a year out and by then I'd lost 110 lbs.
  12. Hi everyone, Im new here as this is my second post in 2 days. I have a question regarding GERD. Im 32 been pretty much overweight all my life and the small time (about 10 years ago) when i was in great shape, i did not suffer from gerd. I also have a small hiatal hernia that may or may not need to be repaired. I do not take medicine for the Gerd, it really doesn't bother me to be honest. I have been reading that preexisting GERD prior to the sleeve can worsen. So much so, that many times the surgeon will suggest a revision to the bypass. The bypass scares the life out of me and i just dont want to do it. No disrespect to bypass patients, But I rather not surgery than get a bypass Studies can only show you so much and Id really like to hear some of your first hand experiences. Did it get worse, Better, same? Also, did any of you get the LINX installed? If so, howd did that go?
  13. Hi ladies, I have a fertility consult in July regarding TTC. I'm about 270 now and pretty much anticipate the doctor telling me that I'll need to lose more weight. I've lost about 150 lbs since my RNY in January 2019 but I've stalled for a while and not sure that I'll make my goal of 250 by my consultation appointment. Have any of you gotten pregnant/had any issues getting pregnant weighing 200+ lbs? I'd very much prefer to be at goal (170 lbs) when I actually start TTC but my eggs aren't getting any younger either.

    New to the process

ONLY REGRET I didn't do this 10 years earlier. Do tons of research. Don't listen to others opinions on WLS if they are negative make your own decision based on legitimate information. Which surgery are you looking at?

    Loose skin fears

I think everyone worries about the loose skin.. It was in the back of my mind but I felt it's worth it for a new life and ffwd 8 months and I've shed 154lbs and I've been very lucky with minimal skin issues mostly on my lower belly and arms but not that noticeable unless naked LoL I've been told as time goes on it may bounce back and when the covid-19 issues go away I'll be looking into gym and toning up over the next year... I'll be 36 this year but I feel and look better than I have in 20 years.
  16. Dear all, I am really so happy to find this forum. I was sleeved in 9 December 2019 in Germany and everything was so perfect for me so far. My Dr told me that after two months i should reduce the pills of PPI slowly. i really did so. It is my fifth month so far and i cannot reduce for more than one pill 40mg for each three days. I really tried a lot but it does not work. in the third day i start feeling some slight pain in my stomach and others i have slight pain in my tonsils. Anyone had a similar story? i am really afraid of having a chronic GERD and then converting to bypass. A last question is about weight loss. since two months my weight loss is very slow. It is a kilo and a half or two kilos maximum. Does it mean that i will not reach my goal? I was 146 kilo. Now i am 114 Thanks a lot

How Bad is the Flight Home?

I had my sleeve surgery on a Wednesday and flew home the Saturday. I had planned on staying longer after my surgery but due to possible plane cancellations (coronavirus) I flew home earlier. Surgeon said I could fly home the Friday if I wanted, I definitely wasn't up to the Friday. Decided to see how I felt the the following day and I felt fine to fly. I travelled solo, so my issue was my suitcase, thankfully I had packed light and used proper manual handling technique to put my case on the belt at check in, and again when picking up the case at arrivals. That was more a drag off the belt and onto the floor. My flight was about 1hr 45minutes - all good there. I didn't need to get up and walk about due to gas pains or anything. I think the biggest worry for you is (1) you don't know yet how you are going to feel after the surgery and if you will be feeling well enough to travel (2) lack of possible social distancing after surgery, not sure I would want the risk of catching covid19 (just after surgery or anytime for that matter) now that it has blown out...hopefully more reined in by then though. (There was only 19 people on my flight home due to massive cancellations back in March and I had no one around at all). What surgery are you having? You may need more time following a bypass? Is your surgeon happy for you to fly four hours after surgery two days before ? Not able to stay an extra night at a hotel somewhere?
  18. I can’t remember off the top of my head. I will contact my doctors office once it opens again after COVID-19. I will post when I know
  19. My first appt was 10/7/19 and I had surgery on 12/18/19. I had a somewhat unique situation in that my insurance was going to expire on 12/31/19, so my surgeon's staff was awesome about pushing everything through quickly. I also stayed on top of things as far as getting all of my mandatory clearances (EKG, PFT, Cardiology and Psych clearances) completed ASAP. Best of luck to you!!
  20. I started on 10/7/19 with the first appointment with the surgeon. I had my surgery on 3/3/20 so right at 5 months. I had to fulfill a lot of appointments with others doctors in that 5 months per the required guidelines of my insurance. I was dedicated and got it all done within the timeline. Mine was supposed to take 6 months but I got it done in 5 months. Whatever your surgeon’s office asks you to do and whatever appointments you need to make, do it. Good luck.
  21. Believe it or not, the time goes by really quickly. I had my initial appointment in October 2018 and had surgery May 2019. I actually went through GW hospital just because it was closer to where I worked and it was easier to get to appointments. But once you start the nutritional portion, it usually depends on what your insurance requires. I was required to attend 6 nutritional appointments and have a psychological evaluation. Once I completed my 6th appointment, I was scheduled shortly thereafter. My husband went through AAMC several years ago and his time frame was similar to mines, so I think it mainly depends on your insurance and you not missing any required appointments. If you do, usually the time will start over. But both hospitals have good programs, I think AAMC was a little stricter in the after surgery eating requirements. I hope this helps.
  22. Hi, I’ve decided to start the process for bariatric surgery. I’m considering vsg. My insurance requires 6 months of weigh ins/dr visits. Although, if BMI is over 50, the six month waiting period is waived. My BMI is 48.5. If I gain 10 pounds, I will hit 50 BMI. The weight management bariatric clinic I was referred to is closed due to COVID 19. I can’t get an anyone to answer the phone. I have no dates set up yet for anything. I’m miserable due to recent and rapid weight gain. I would like to have the surgery done this year. I have already met my out of pocket spending with my insurance due to other issues, so the bariatric surgery will be covered if I have it this year. I’m well aware that I can put rocks in my pocket or ankle weights on my ankles to add more pounds to the scale. However, I am also aware that this is fraud. Should I focus on gaining the ten pounds and feeling worse? Or, should I focus on attempting to lose weight and doing six month weigh ins? Thus, putting me at surgery next year. Also, I had my thyroid removed last year and it’s almost impossible to lose weight. Either way, I’m in a no win situation. Looking for advice. Thank you!!
  23. Hope all is well Here in Australia in my state we are starting to ease covid-19 restrictions opening some shops this week and cinemas and gyms and restaurants next month but still with social distancing and limits on numbers. I've been well and everyone I know and love is well. Anyway just want to summarise my journey for those who are new. I started my weight loss journey 8.5 months ago at 322lbs and I had roux en y bypass 6.5 months ago. From day one I chose to go cold turkey and cut out all the bad food sugar fat carbs and lived off protein shakes religiously for months. By surgery day I was 257lbs and I've now technically been in maintenance a few weeks and this morning I'm 168lbs most days between 168/170lbs and have been that way for a few weeks; finally starting to feel good about myself that's a total of 154lbs gone. Now when I look in the mirror I do not recognise myself anymore it's amazing to see how small I look now. Everyone in my family is so happy for me because I spent half my life obese and unwell mentally not just physically but now my mental health is improving because I no longer dislike what I see in the mirror; is amazing how much my brain has changed now that I'm healthy and skinny. I've only just started experimenting with food more than past 2 months and have relaxed in the carb counting/calorie counting but still quite aware of my daily intake. i will admit I've had a few treats here and there in the past month but it literally has not affected me weight loss at all.. It's like I have a completely new metabolism.. I love coffee and I feel great mentally and physically and I cannot wait to meet a nice young lady who will appreciate me. I'll be 36 in 11 weeks and I'm feeling better than I have in 20 years I personally think and feel like I'm going to be 26 hehehehehe I've got a few photos to show you guys and I appreciate honest comments from the ladies (it's not easy to take photos & get good angle of myself but I did my best) Thank you. If you have any questions about my bypass or anything feel free to comment or PM. Starting BMI 43.3 current BMI 22.7 Love Mikey xx
  24. I am a 2012 gastric sleeve patient from Mexico. Since June, 2019, I have not been feeling well. Excessive heartburn that Omeprazole will not touch at all. In 2018, I had a hiatal hernia repair and found out in October, 2019 that I have another hiatal hernia and was told it cannot be repaired. I finally met with another surgeon and she discovered I have an angulation in my sleeve. I have noticed since I have started to become extremely sick that I have severe constipation, which I have never experienced with the sleeve. I am now drinking smooth move tea every night which has worked wonders for me, but now the past two mornings I am experiencing these very painful cramps and I am gassy all of the time. I noticed when I would not have BM's for days I would bloat up like a blow fish and would be in a lot of pain. I was told I will need a revision to bypass to repair the hernia and the angulation, but due to Covid it is slowing things up a bit. Plus, this new surgeon is making me see the nutritionist and the psychiatrist. I am hoping my insurance covers with no problem for revision since my BMI is only a 30 and they want a 35 with underlying issues. Surgeon said I cannot gain weight due to it will make it more difficult for her to do surgery on me. Anyone on here that has experienced this, what did you do for the constipation, stomach pain and regurgitation until you got relief? Some days the Omeprazole works and other days I am choking and thinking I am having a heart attack.
  25. Yay! Nice, it's always fun to have someone on the same schedule. Thursday is the first day of my diet, actually. I don't have a clear liquid diet except for the last day before surgery, for the rest, it's a milk diet. Three 20 ounce servings of milk or a milk alternative, low sodium broth, and 50 ounces of sugar free low cal (10 or less) drinks or flavored water a day. I drink 120 ounces of water a day, so that part isn't hard. The liquid diet sucks, and I get dizzy a lot, but I did a week before without cheating so I know I'll manage. The most annoying part is cooking for the family and not being able to taste test the food though, since I don't really use recipes. I have to call the hubby or kids in to make sure the sauces and stuff are good or if they need more seasoning, lol.
