    Hubby asked why?

Hubby was sitting on the couch watching tv and he piped up out of the blue asking why I was so adimant about losing weight? He told me he loved me like I was and that should be enough. I thought about it before i answered... It has nothing to do with being "skinny" or "celebrity sexy" (granted I really like shopping at stores other than Lane Bryant and for a size almost out of the double didgets) but it has to do with being healthy. Being able to do what I want without restriction because of my weight. I want to get old by his side and watch our sons take on the world. If I don't get myself just a bit healthier I risk not being able to do those things. I have lived an amazing life and with age and maturity I apprecaite things more, I want to see and do more amazing things and appreciate them at the time....not later or possibly not at all! We talked some more about why I want to get to a healthier state and it turns out he is secretly affraid that I will get skinny and run off with the next best thing. Is he kidding me:eek:? If I wanted to jet I would of done it some time ago. I think I got him straigtened out because he set up his treadmill to start running tomorrow because he wants us to go backpacking just the two of us by summers end:w00t:....now that is the man I married.
  4. My advice would be, take a look at why you're not losing weight, and go from there. Fills fall into place for some, and for others it takes months of up/down adjustments to hit a sweet spot. I personally never had what I would consider a sweet spot. I was either too tight or too loose, so I opted to stay too loose and make up for the difference myself. What is your intake? What fill level are you at, with what band size? What foods are you eating? Etc. What are your behaviors around food? I have no idea how much weight you have to lose but about 25 pounds in 3 - 4 months is not bad weight loss. I've seen a lot of sleevers with similar loss rates, so don't assume that the sleeve = faster/more loss. I lost in the neighborhood of 175 - 200 lbs with my lapband over the 5.5 years I had it. That includes about 18 months "stuck" at the same weight. I had just started to lose weight again, when I ended up on the trail that led me to need it removed. I'm glad I had my lapband, but I just don't see it as a permanent solution. Do I personally think you're jumping the gun - maybe, but I really can't say for sure unless I knew something about "why" it wasn't working.
  5. I feel your pain. I had the band over 2 years ago and actually lost about 90 pounds with the band. When I reached that point I vitually stopped losing weight and the scale never moved again. I too was tired of the constant checks and fills and at this point I was at the max fill. I was having constant vomiting due to food getting stuck and not being able to go through. No matter how much I chewed my food I was having constant problems. I went to my surgeon and he told me that there was not much that they could do and that looking back I probably should have had the sleeve due to the amount of weight that I had to lose. Well I thought thats great.....fine time to tell me now. My insurance denied the removal of the band and they would not pay for the sleeve. The cost for me to have it done out of pocket would have been over $40,000. This would have been a surgery to removed the band and then 5 months later they would have done the sleeve. I was really down and when talking to my brother in CA one day he told me that a friend of his had just has surgery in Tijuana and was doing great. I got her number and called and spoke to her several times. I did some research on the surgery in Mexico and found that if I did not have a lot of scaring from the band that they could take it out and do the sleeve in a single procedure. I called to schedule the surgery and was planning on going with the doctor that my brothers friend had but he was not available when I could get time off to have the surgery so I went with Dr F Garcia. He was wonderful and I had my surgery on Dec 11, 2011. My surgery in Mexico with travel costs came to around $6000......BIG DIFFERENCE. I am so happy with my sleeve that I can not believe it. I have only vomited once since I had the surgery and that was totally my fault. I do not miss the fills or the vomiting. If this is what you want I support you 1000%. Do not wait to long as you could end up having your band slip or risk the formation of scar tissue forming around the band. If you have any other questions for me please ask. Best of luck and you new life with the band,
  6. Only you can decide - If its not working for you, then you have to make a decision. However, regardless of what surgery you have, if you don't chew your food enough, you're gonna have some discomfort. I think with the band and the bypass, its more intense than with the sleeve, but there is a valid reason for having to chew chew chew! Not knowing how much you have to lose, starting weight, etc - its hard to say what the average weight should be for someone with the band or sleeve to compare yourself with. But bottom line, if the band isn't for you, its not for you. Just know that with the band you can take it out - its not permanent - think long and hard about the sleeve - there's no changing it. That being said, I'm over the moon about mine. I thought for a very long time about it.
  7. I'm right there with you, and it sucks! I got my band 3/31/10 and have lost 20 pounds (started at 217.5, now 197.5). I cannot eat anything, and for 2 days haven't even been able to drink more than 1 gulp every few hours. I HATE HATE HATE this, and am starting to wish I never had the lapband. I cannot seem to find my sweet spot; either I have way too much in or my Dr. takes out too much and I don't have any restriction. I have decided to go in tomorrow and ask him to remove Fluid. I've joined weight watchers, but cannot even eat 5 points throughout the day. When I tell my Dr. I can't eat, he says, "You're obviously able to eat some things since you're maintaining your weight." and won't take out fluid. I am literally going insane from not physically being able to eat. You definately need to ask them to take out fluid. Not being able to eat is not healthy physically or mentally.

    6 month diet for insurance!!!!!!!!

I had to do a six month diet as well for insurance approval. I went to a nutritionist but, I was not happy with them. Check and see if you can follow Weight Watchers and be seen by your doctor once a month for the "monitored" diet part. I was able to do that.

    Journey for a Healthier Me

Well upon my visit in the fall of 2009, my PCP suggested I look into the lap-band. I am pre-diabetic and he said it is only a matter of time. I have dieted many times and have been on the diet rollercoaster. This year my mind is made up. I have decided to reclaim my life back and make it healthier. I have started the process and going to weekly meetings followed by weekly exercise through the hospital. On my own, I have really started since January and have lost a total of about 14lbs to date. It has been a slow and steady process but they say slow is good and it will stay off. The Doc likes to see that you are committed to lose the weight before he will even consider you for the surgery. I have changed my outlook and give myself little reminders all the time that I will succeed. I exercise daily and have the most wonderful husband who supports me. Im new to this whole website stuff so bear with me. I am looking to get some insight from people who have the band and find out how their journey has been. My last class is today and I am trying to get on the exercise class asap so I can keep the momentum moving forward.
  12. I got my band on August 1, 2008. It was the BEST thing I could've done for myself! I lost over 100 pounds and had ZERO regrets. In the last year and a half, I've gained up to 40 pounds (lost 10) but have felt no restriction, and my Dr. and I were stumped. It wasn't until my THIRD upper GI (this week) that revealed my band has eroded and shifted. I'm so terribly disappointed. My Dr. Suggests band removal (of course!) and then switching to the gastric sleeve. When I asked about rebanding, he said his experience with everyone he's rebanded is the erosion again. So now, I have a difficult decision to make. I chose the band b/c it is completely reversible. I did amazing with it. My Dr. told me his patients that do well with the band, do well with the sleeve after band erosion and is convinced I will do great as well. I'm apprehensive. Most of what I read ob GS is positive, but it's the irreversible part that bothers me. Advice?

    Really decided to do this

Thanks roeroe. I do have a pc physician back in MI, but I moved last October and have yet to get settled with one here. That is now at the top of my list. I do have records that show I've been morbidly obese for 20+ years. I've also been on WW since Sept of last year but can't stick to it. Thank you for the reminder that I will need to transfer my records. My last full physical was in 2009 when I was diagnosed with osteopenia which is not weight related, but the extra weight is not helping. Good luck on your surgery and your journey, too!
  14. I guess I forgot to blog about my first wls seminar that dh & I attended last Wednesday! I know I wrote a post about it but in the interest of keeping my thoughts all here in the blog- I'll add what I can remember here too. It was a seminar for the Davis Clinic in Houston (the guys on the show 'Big Medicine.) It was downtown and from 6:30-8pm. We arrived to a gorgeous hospital & went upstairs to a conference area that is being remodeled. It was dark and creepy. There were just enough seats (about 40 people there.) I got a packet that had a pretty generic info sheet to fill out. It also contained a flyer for financing your sugery, two more flyers with lapband ads, and then a stapled portion detailing step by step what was to happen if you choose to have surgery with them. Dr. Robert Davis, the older gentleman (the dad), was the only Davis there. I had hoped to meet him but after his speech & q&a, he left. It was an hr long presentation with powerpoint on the different kinds of surgery. It was good- informative-interesting. I'm glad I attended. I was disappointed that he's not a fan of lapband. Lapband is all that my drs have said I can get. GB is not ok due to my health issues. Anyway- tomorrow is my second wls seminar. Its for the Surgery Group of the Woodlands with Dr Balette. My mom is going with me & we have to be there at 8:30am. This means I gotta leave my place by about 7 to make sure I'm there in time (due to traffic.) I'm excited though!!!! Oh & the reason I've warped my face outta my pics is because I was unknowingly pictured in tons of flyers & ads locally for winning that local biggest loser comp. I have sinced dealt with people who run into me & ask if I'm that same lady (since its quite obvious I gained it all back.) It taught me to keep my weight battles private for a while until I figure it all out, therefore, no face for now . I'll post my review on wls seminar #2 tomorrow.

    Dazed and Confused

Geez, you are doing great!! Don't get discouraged, everybody is different. It took me 4 fills before I really started losing. It has been one year now and I have lost 85 pounds. I am actually a few pounds below the original goal I set for myself. I felt the same way you do at the same point into my band. Just trust me, you are doing great and have great motivation. As far as the fills go, I have a friend that never got a fill and she has lost almost 100 pounds and she had surgery 2 months after me. So, the band acts different on everybody. I am exhilerated about my weight loss and I promise you I would have never done it without the band. It is a great tool. Keep up the good work!!!

    Head Hunger is REAL!!

Gosh. I don't even know where to start. I'm seriously concerned for you and your well being. Not just from the drinking your calorie part, but as much the alcohol (and juice) combo. Did you receive any pre-op education? Do you have a post-op dietary guideline from your doc or RD? The first place to start if you CANNOT do this on your own by accessing and applying your personal responsibility would be to see your doc, your RD and ask for a counselor PDQ. Your surgery is a tool. It's a "nail", but you are the hammer. Without your actions (repetitive and applied force), the nail does not do its job. And even then, there are MANY nails that will need to be employed to lose and maintain your weight. Not just the one nail from the surgery. Think about it. It takes multiple nails to hold up a house! WL Nails: Healthy Diet Plan WLS Exercise Relaxation Exercises and Deep Breathing Re or Balancing Your Once Toxic Relationship with Eating for Comfort or Eating Emotionally Re or Balancing Your Once Toxic Relationship With Food (making healthy choices over eating crap) Re or Balancing Your Once Toxic Relationship With Family/Friends Balancing Work Schedules and I could go on and on with the number of nails you need to act upon as the hammer, in order to keep your house level!

    First Nutrition Appointment

So yesterday I had my first nutrition appointment and my initial consult with the surgeon (Dr. Galvani). I thought I was going to have to do 3 months supervised diet, but apparently I wouldn't have to (because of my BMI). However I want to do my surgery in early December (good time to be off work) and so I'll do 4 months with the NUT. Dr. seemed agreeable to my timeline, and the insurance coordinator was not concerned about my approval. The NUT was a hoot...enough energy for all of us! My husband went with me and so she included his calories/targets as well...he only gets 300 more calories than I do...I was surprised. So here is what it turns out my first month targets are: 1. 1500 Calories a day 2. between 125-150 grams of Carbohydrates (will go down in the following months but she figured out pretty quickly I'm a carb-a-holic) 3. between 80-90 grams protein 4. minimum 30 minutes daily moving 5. lose weight (no target pounds given) It was very liberating for me to get some guidelines to follow. I know that may not make sense, but I've been winging it for so long, actually having a target to shoot for that I know will ultimately result in weight loss is kind of cool. I'm using my fitness pal to log my food and we will call it up at my next NUT visit on 04 August. For the first time in a very long time....I believe I can do this! Beth

    Thanksgiving leftovers

Well, I still have my few extra pounds from thanksgiving on me...I have been trying desperately to get them off but they just keep hanging around...I figured with this last fill that I would just be dropping weight, but I guess not...Right now its just driving me crazy...Since thanksgiving dinner I have really been trying to be good and do whats right, but we have the dreaded leftovers in the fridge...I have been trying to stick to the turkey, green bean cassarole and the pea salad that I had made...I thought I was making some good choices...Maybe it will just take a few more days for my body to get back together and figure out what its suppose to be doing...Dang holidays are the worst!!
  21. So I'm transferring insurances (to Oxford liberty) and their requirements for the sleeve is to have a BMI above 40 or if below have major health issue. Now I've been pre diabetic 2x's now and have PCOS. My weight has been up and down like crazy since the beginning of my 6month journey. Speaking with my dr's office my insurance does not consider being pre diabetic a major health issue or my PCOS. I'm starting to get nervous about getting approved. Anyone else been in the same boat?? Also does anyone know if they go with your starting BMI from when you started or where you at, at the end of your supervised weigh ins?

    Starting over....Need a buddy

I'm with you-I had lost 50pds and have gained it back.....it is very frustrating and no one in my family understands! I'm ashamed to go back to the doctor to get another fill:( because I don't think he would do one.
  23. I'm getting ready to have my gastric sleeve this week and I have a friend really wanting to know more. She had stomach stapling (horizontal) in the 90s. Originally she lost lots of weight and later gained more than that back and more. Now she is having serious health conditions. She is wondering if there is a bariatric procedure she can have. She's very interested in the sleeve.

    First Fill

OK, I've been on a liquid diet for 5 Weeks - and I was SOOOOO excited to go to the doctors today and be advanced to 'soft' and then 'regular' foods. I had decided a portion of a Veggie Soft Taco from Taco Time would be my treat for a job well done. I didn't drink anything until the doctors office to maximize my weight loss (I also wore shorts and thongs). OK, I get there, I did well, my mouth is just salivating - I talk to the doctor - he asks me how I'm doing - I'm doing great - no problems - excep HUNGER! I tell him about a little stitch poking out, he says climb up on the table "I'm going to feel you". My physician has an accent - but I got ready, and he took a long time to get something to remove the suture with, and came back in with a cart. He started filling needs and I said, what are you doin? He said "I'm going to feel you". I queried "why do you need a needle to feel me?". I couldn't believe it - he was going to "fill me". Of course, I was excited. Then came the words. MORE liquids for 2-3 days, and then of course - restriction. I just feel like going and slurping up some ranch sauce - I want that taco so bad! Oh well. But hey - my sister decided to do my diet with me - and she lost 18 pounds this month! She's smaller than me - and DID GREAT. I called her and let her know about my loss (just slightly more than her) - He must have known I was going to eat - he just must have known! I thought it was funny - but I'm happy.
